- Thankfully I had the VCR ready to record when HNIC hit the air that night. Don Cherry gives his commentary on this classic brawl. Sorry it took me so many years to get this loaded up, I figured someone else would have loaded it long ago...enjoy.
The CBC showed us the brawl even though the game wasn't being televised yet. Ah, the good old days.
For sure missing them everyday
I live in montreal and cbc showed the brawl and the game.
@@ryankatz7707 And even though I don't speak French that's why I used to pay for RDS so I could see the Habs play instead of the useless Toronto Maple Laffs. And there are as many Habs fans in Ontario as Maple Laff fans but just guess who has the precious TV rights in Ontario. The Maple Laffs, rebuilding since 1967.
Don Cherry is a national treasure... in the US too.
Never seen this brawl before
Sad to see the days when Don thought he was sitting with a friend only to later learn the man he saved eagerly threw him under the bus. Everyone of us knew “those people” referred to anyone of us that weren’t supporting the troops. Haven’t watched 10 seconds of the intermissions since that disgusting exhibition by Ron. Hard to even say his name.
Patrick Roy always in the big brawls
Don and Ron...man were they young...great to see this tape..beauty!!
thumbs down.
Don's like 50
@@wordup2yourmother Ron McLean is 27 years old here.
Long before Ron threw Don under the bus! Claude and Ron are cut from the same cloth in my opinion!!
Before Ron grew liberal!
Grew up watching hockey. Damn do I miss it. RIP NHL.
Yeah, it was stolen from us like a thief in the Night, it was ours, now every twit who can spend his weeks pay check on sweaters, hats, and $200 tickets is the fanbase. 🤑🤑🤑
@@jasonsabourin2275I agree totally. We got our souls ripped from us that's for sure
Some incredibly high quality video! If only other videos of the era were half as good!
You took damn good care of this tape, the quality is really solid for its age.
probably watched hockey in a desert as a fantasy lol. im just kidding. great video. young cherry and good ol' hockey. Tom Connors would be proud. im sure hes damn near breaking the sound barrier as fast as hes spinning with the state of the place now
High quality video!
Nobody had ever respected the 30 foot rule...when a message needs to be sent.
Going to say this as a Captain. a female one at that on mostly Male league. I had to prove my worth. Took a few penalties here and there. High sticked a guy for messing with my goalie. Got away with that.
I do ice maintenance at my local twin pad and our girl team is vicious. Every game ive seen they end uo injuring a player on the opposing team 😂
I sure miss the days before the Ice Capades-like advertising, on the boards.
Me too
....and Ice Capades they play on the ice. Bettman ruined the sport.
You wanna watch all the games at your leisure?
Well then...stop being a baby and look at some ads on the boards! 😊
“I’m listening to the f’n song!!”
This is what the NHL NEEDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved this type of good old days of hockey.
Who easy misses Don Cherry? I do...
I don't
Don Cherry. A national fucking treasure.
so 2 things watching 30 years later
1. Don Cherry & Brian Williams Classic "Grapevine" brings back such good memories
2. I miss the days of plain white boards, no advertising
Perrin Aybara Who’s Brian Williams?
You confused Ron MacLean with Brian Williams? Also, the HNIC segment called Coach's Corner. Don Cherry's Grapevine was a 30-minute interview program that Cherry hosted for a few years in the 1980s.
Other than that, your comment was spot on.
That Ron not Brian
my guess is confusion between this and the 87 world juniors brawl. cherry vs brian williams.

Thanks for the effort saving & uploading this.
NHL used to be the best reality tv of all-time.
I like this so called iced hockey.
A brawl before the game even starts ... ya gotta love it, classic hockey. You know Cherry loved it.
God I miss old hockey.
Another first for the Flyers, you have and never ever will see something like this again! Awesome stuff and the Flyers were deserving winners of that series!
I grew up in the 70's, had an old 19 inch black and white tv with a hanger for an antenna, and I used to put on HNIC every Saturday night. I miss that game I grew up with, I can't stand watching hockey now, there really is no real rivalries any more. The networks try and play if up for ratings, but there is just no animosity or hatred in the game. It's all about building the big rinks, fill the stands and make a profit. I miss the old Boston Garden, the Aud in Buffalo, Chicago Stadium, and so on. I agree with Don Cherry, at that time, if he gone on that ice to break up that fight, he would have succeeded because he had that respect level.
The primary reason there are no rivalries anymore is because most of the traditional rivals have been separated into different divisions/conferences during expansion/realignment.
I didn't know that about Claude Lemieux so soon in his career? super disrespectful
O'Reilly, Jonathan, Gilles, Shultz, Clarke...the good old days!
Agreed, David. Too many teams equals fewer games against each team to build rivalries.
@@berettoberetto7856 no they are goons. they fought there way to the cup ! how did the league allow that to happen. the heads of the NHL should go fuck off and die. the way they let the calls be made today are so lame.
Even in the Russian Canada Summit series of 1972. Clark slashed Kharlamov. this changed the the end result. he is a fucking dirty player and was rewarded for it! so sad to be honest.
1987!!!!.... What a different time it was!!!
I was 15 years old when this happened and I remember when the game came on TV and right away they were talking about this and I didn't understand what was going on. And when Cherry said "pier sixer", I asked my dad what that meant and he said "a big brawl, a fight". And I went nuts lol. Very cool to see it again after all these years.
"Pier sixer"
That's right...and I'm a writer! LMAO
Pier 6. On Staten Island. The term refers to boxing matches held on the pier during the 1910’s and 20’s
Old NY sports writer lingo. Great old video eh?!
"I would've broken it up in no time" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh, and there was a hockey game, too. Philly won 4 - 3.
@Ray Lat - First stated by Blackhawks announcer Llyod Pettit back in the 60's.
Best footage/coverage I've ever seen on this legendary moment
A lot of tough customers out there! That was a great era
Wow, i just went back to being 15 years old watching hockey night in Canada on my rabbit ears tv living in buffalo
Ah classic hockey drama at it's best. Man I miss the good old days great hockey, bloody jerseys and UFC on skates as the main event.
Claude Lemieux turtled? Color me shocked...
would you imagine that - - played dirty - - talked shit - - instigated the hell out of things then went into his shell and I was born in Montreal and I'm a big Canadiens fan but the truth is the truth
That’s how he spent his career. I’d be embarrassed if I was his family. “My grandpa, Claude Lemieux, played in the NHL”.....*friend checks CZcams, “what a loser he was bro”.
@@nskr160 He actually won cups so he really wasn't a loser.
And won 4 Stanley Cups.. who gives a fuck what you think
Kevin Brown looked like a fucking pussy doing it. No fucking honor.
I love how Corson "watched" Claude Lemieux get pummeled.
ha ha corson knows whos who, no need to rush in to help, corson let it play out a bit
He should have slapped Resche around at the very least.
Indeed. What a douchebag he was.
Didn't wanna mess with Resch. LOL
yeah Lemieux got a head start on his turtle move for a while there - until he finally had enough and flipped Hospodar over - Lemieux was a bull of a man when he wanted to be. Yeah way to go Corson , really was in there for your teammate
Nothing against today's hockey, but this era, the 80s and 90s, were a lot more fun than the stuff that is played today.
Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. Look at the first round of the current playoffs ALONE. You got the juggernaut team Tampa Bay Lightning SWEPT by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Fucking swept, the team that had well over 300 goals for in the regular season (where no other team even broke the 300 mark), they got fucking swept and it wasn't even close.
You got the Golden Knights who were up 3-1 in their series blow it all away in game 7 as the Sharks score FOUR goals in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period to ultimately win the game in OT.
You got the fucking Hurricanes who haven't been in the playoffs in 9 seasons who just beat out the defending cup champions in the Capitals in 7 games.
Then you got teams like the Blues (specifically the Blues) and the Avs who were almost completely eliminated from playoff contention halfway through the season go on unprecedented runs to make the playoffs.
I just personally can't get behind this whole narrative that because you would routinely see bench clearing brawls that the "good ol' days" were better than the on ice product we have now. Idk, hockey is so much more to me than just the fighting.
@@dumbdumb572 pdromero09
is right. The hockey back in the 70s and 80s was MUCH more entertaining. As for fighting, over 90% of the players want fighting in the game. It's entertaining as fuck, and it's part of the game. Hockey is a man's game. If you can't handle it, find another sport like tennis or soccer. Those feature a much more passive and gentle style.
@@dumbdumb572 Parody alone doesn't make it a more entertaining game.
@@Joe-mz6dc where did I ever say I wanted fighting out of the game?
@@ChrisSmith-ec6qp "parody"? You mean "parity"? Sure, make the NHL into the NBA, look at how that plays out lmfao.
Ahhhhhh. The good old days in hockey.
Was crazy like that back in the day
These days, teams have nutrition experts. In those days, they drew straws to see who'd pick up a two-four at Brewer's Retail before the game.
🤣
brewers retail lol...i miss those days!
When MEN played in the NHL
@@youngstali yeah
Boy, times sure have changed. Hospodar, Nilan, Kordic, Dave Brown all on the same ice. 4 heavyweight enforcers between 2 teams. Are there even 4 enforcers in the entire league these days?
Berube was also on that flyers team, I think it was his first year in the league. Tocchet was also on that team.
Not much need for them. The game is entirely different and you skill wins over goons most nights. The NHL has no desire to go back to games about intimidating other teams. That was the bruins and flyers schtick.
Notice the image of the Cup behind Ron and Don looks like it's half full of beer? I miss old time hockey.
Cherry was always having 'pops' during the game. Its why they did his segment when he was still sorta sober after the first period.
I miss real hockey
Great. Great. Thanks for putting it up.
Terrific how measured and pro Cherry is describing it all.
I'm sure CBC never would have guessed that these two guys would STILL be doing commentary together 3 decades later XD. Holy SHIT they looked so much younger back then O_O
Thumbs up for this magic moment commercial. I had forgotten that one :D
The good ol' days before CZcams and VCR recording!! Cheers for this upload.. this was the year I was born.

those were the good ole' days !🏒👍
Never gets old...
Don and Ron in their prime ! Its a great watch.
Back when Ron and Don's schtick wasn't realized. Good Old Time Hockey
- The story I heard re: Hextall was that Keenan locked the door on him in the dressing room( or it might've been the equipment room actually )because he feared Hextall, who's never afraid of getting involved in fisticuffs himself, would jump in on the fray & risk getting tossed or even suspended during the playoffs, & the Flyers were en route to the Cup Finals that year( they won this game eventually to eliminate the Habs & advance to the Cup Final )...
- Also, I bet nothing happened the game before because they were in Philadelphia & no way were the Habs going to try anything stupid in front of that rowdy sellout crowd at the Spectrum in Philly, they simply waited to they got back in their home arena to try that silly pre-game ritual of theirs...& they Flyers weren't having any of it & didn't care that they were back at the Forum, they were ready for Lemieux's pre-game antics regardless....
Correct
@@ckendall67 - and Lemieux doesn't have any pre-game antics, so they attack him anyways? Yeah, that makes sense but only to a Flyer fan! In fact, it was Corson who put the puck in the net but they didn't do squat to him ... as Corson could fight!
@@ckendall67 Go rewatch the video. I don't listen to Don cherry because of his innate bias and he could never keep his facts straight. One week claiming this, the next week claiming the opposite.
Watch his opinions when its Marchand submarining or slew legging vs ulf samuelsson.
@@ckendall67 your wrong they did it there too - your dreaming - back in the 70s in 75 or 76 after the flyers won their back to back - the following season the canadiens beat the shit out of the flyers in preseason they never even finished the game - and the broad street bullies were never the same again the flyers are a lot more myth than tough - dirty yeah but not that tough at all
Ah the brawling 80's hockey !!
Have you seen the beer commercial salt and pepper shaker ? Now that’s old time hockey🙂
Legends Never Die !!
Dave Brown & Daryl Stanley shared a house two streets over from me in Cherry Hill, NJ. My younger brother & his friend pushed their car out of the snow one time.
"They wouldn't let me go on, I would of broken it up in no time and straightened them OWT." said Don Cherry. Love ya Grapes.
Koexistence13 I always thought it was "oot" LOL.
It's 2021! Who misses Coach's Corner?
I just wish it had been removed sooner. This is what it started as, before ron and don turned it into a 7 minute barf buffet about whatever the squirrel in Cherry's brain was chewing on. For a long time he had said a lot of unacceptable things. Had been warned about it, continued to do so and was all about himself and his opinions. He was bigger than the games on the ice. It should have never been about his segment but the game played that evening.
Skatey punchy...ah, old time hockey!
I remember watching this game.
RIP Peter Zezel.
I remember him as a Blue
@@concernedcitizen4819 i remember him as a Hamilton Mustang
@BMM WTW Nice. I like to break out the "you can learn how to punch in the barn but you gotta know how to take care of yourself on the ice" line when the middle age guys outdoor pick-up games I play in get competitive.
Most of Claude Lemieux’s teammates don’t like him.
He triggered one of the more interesting rivalries of the 90's. But the man is a dirty player.
William Groves
Being a Hockey fan for 50+ years, I’ve seen many a “cheap-shot artist” and the only one worse than Lemiuex was Sammulson. At least Lemiuex would drop’em every once again in a while, Sammulson ALWAYS turtles, always!
he was just a kid and he was from a very poor background and was very young and stupid then , this team had Jacques Lemaire as coach - he played well for him but did not get along with Pat Burns so he got traded - to NJ - and that is how Lemaire ended up coaching in NJ .
This playoff year is when I fell in love with watching hockey.
Bring back Real NHL, Bring Back Don Cherry 🥅🏒🥅🏒🥅🏒 BRING BACK 70s 80s
Cherry can stay stuck in the 70's. He should have been fired shortly after this video. The guy was thrash for as long as he was on TV. Racists, xenophobic bigot. I don't watch hockey for this clowns opinion on the world. Stick to hockey. And even then his view was that of a farm team Dman who played in the 50's.
Thank you
Don't forget the 90's
from wikipedia's page on the 1987 stanley cup playoffs, "in an attempt to reduce the number of first round upsets, the NHL expanded the best-of-five series in the first round to a best-of-seven series. " i wonder what they going to do after the 2019 playoffs?
The league has accepted that upsets will always happen
claude is such a turtle. Same as when MCarty got him.
I was at this game.
Dave Don Cherry says "i dont understand why Corson didnt go in sooner" Its because no one likes claude lemieux
....truth; his own teammates hated him....despised him!!
Lemieux is still a cheap, dirty scumbag. I don't care how many Cups he won. I wouldn't care if he was elected Pope. He's a chump, cowardly prick and I was ecstatic when he retired. 20-odd years too late.

Old Time Hockey At Its Best.
"Old time hockey." The game hasn't even started yet. Call me crazy but when I want to see a fight I'll turn on boxing or MMA.
Don Cherry, with a plain suit jacket? Wow.
topofthecircle I was gonna say the most shocking thing in this video is Cherry’s suit doesn’t look like Christmas wrapping paper.
These two Guys, Cherry & MacLean are officially legends now. Hockey is blessed to have these two guys. And Doc, Olcyzk, Roenick, Milbury, Keith Jones, etc...

The collar on Cherry looks awfully high. You think he loses a lot of heat through the neck.
amazing to see cherry and mclean more than 30 years ago. Must be love..
Saddest thing about this is knowing gutless Maclean threw Cherry under the bus after the 2019 CBC comment.
Ron at age 27 and Don at age 53.
Enjoying it some 30 years later. Man do Cherry and Ron McClean look young there.
Wonder what the fines were if any back then. Now a days you'd get 20 games suspension for that.
Each club got $25,000 dollar fines, Ed Hospodar was suspended for the rest of the playoffs and the following people were fined for fighting.... Chris Nilan, Dave Brown, Larry Robinson, Don Nachbaur, Mike McPhee, Rick Tocchet, John Kordic, and Daryl Stanley.
Can we get a reverse of this where its all Molson commercial with a hockey fight break? How many salt and peppers can that guy talk his way into getting?!?

To everyone commenting “Old Time Hockey” - you’re misusing the quote. The quote from Slap Shot is “Old time hockey. None of this wrestling shit!”
The movie was about how violence is dumbing down the game. Not sure how that line got so misconstrued.
I remember these days. It's when Ron MacLean kept looking down at Cherry's nuts.
Don Cherry wanted on the ice, love it.
"Lemieux's not fighting back." That's kind of his thing.
I love Grapes. "I would have broken it up in no time."
I think this must be the first video of I've watched where I can tolerate Don the whole way through. Must've been some atmosphere at the game altogether.
He is mostly sticking to hockey instead of shooting his mouth off at something unrelated. He is also focused on doing a job instead of grandstanding like the peacock he thinks he is.
You rock Don! Never say sorry
Absolutely
