  • I actually left this patch running and recorded a much longer stretch of it. If you're interested, the extended audio version is available here: • 3 Modules #109: Extend...
    Patch notes:
    The basis for this patch is a pretty standard generative setup with Marbles and Rings: a slowly changing sequence playing Rings' sympathetic strings mode (yellow), with some gradual modulation of the Structure and Position parameters.
    This is played through the Black Hole DSP's lowpass delay mode, with the smooth random Y output from Marbles modulating the lowpass filter cutoff to create gradual swells. I also have a little bit of modulation added to the Crush parameter. The name makes it sound like it's some drastic distortion, but in reality it simply controls the sample rate that the effect is running at. At extreme settings it can certainly result in some serious signal destruction, but gentle modulation makes for a very pleasant, subtle warble.
    After about 4:30 I blend in a little bit of the dry signal, as you can hear the the plinks fade in in the background.

    Your Videos are a goldmine, especially for Eurorack Beginners like me. It shows how you can create beautiful and creative patches with only a handful of Modules. Love it!!

      Thanks! A few modules can go a long way. Especially when you get used to finding substitutions for the functions your patch requires.

    Simply amazing! Do you think you could re-run that patch but instead switching the Black Hole DSP2 for the Mimeophon?
    Also, which one would you say is the best at reverb/delay: the DSP2 or the Mimeophon?

    • @ComparativeIrrelevance
      @ComparativeIrrelevance  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks! I would have a go at recreating this with Mimeophon, but I actually no longer have Marbles either! Mimeophon's filter doesn't close fully like the filter echo on BHDSP2 does, but other than that it should be possible to recreate this patch pretty closely.
      As for Mimeophon vs. BHDSP2, it’s a bit like comparing a specialized master to a jack of all trades, if you get me. Black Hole obviously gives you more effects options than Mimeophon (except there’s actually no algorithm that gives you delay+reverb at the same time!), and I think it has some *slightly* better sounding reverbs, like the wonderful stalker algorithm. But Mimeophon is overall just a better, more capable delay, and it responds much better to modulation. BHDSP2 feels like a multi-FX unit with some CV inputs added, but it seems like less care has been taken to make sure that the effects respond smoothly to modulation: You'll hear some digital artefacts when CV modulating things like delay time, for instance. Mimeophon, on the other hand, is a well polished, well integrated part of the modular: No state switching, and all parameters feel good to modulate.

      Sure. Do you mean in this patch specifically, or in a small setup with just those four modules?

      @@ComparativeIrrelevance I just bought marbles, plaits, and rings after watching your videos about them and have been messing around with them in VCV, and i was thinking about saving up for a black hole dsp and maybe a woggle to modulate its features.

    • @bobafat1830
      @bobafat1830 Před 4 lety

      so would the DSP be a good addition to those 3 modules?

    • @ComparativeIrrelevance
      @ComparativeIrrelevance  Před 4 lety +2

      I see. I think the black hole DSP is a decent module, with some good sounding effects, but it's not the most exciting thing to patch CV into. I found myself mostly using it as an end-of-chain reverb, and it's a bit expensive for that: a plug-in or even a pedal would be better value for money, in my opinion. It *is* useful if you want to avoid external gear, of course, but even then there are more interesting modular effects out there: I've swapped my BHDSP2 for a mimeophon recently.
