- A quick behind the scenes look at today’s Inside Blackbird video shoot.
This particular video was a deep deep dive on the mad world of ancient echo devices.
So much fun and such a learning experience.
Starring:
Johnny McBride
Eric “Ebo” Borash
David Kalmusky
Matt Bender
Joey Stanca
Sweet Ally
and the rest of the fine video crew at Blackbird Studio in Nashville TN
It’s great how comfortable everyone is with Uncle Larry cam nowadays.
Oh my God, I could smell them through the screen! And yes, that is the cleanest, shiniest Echoplex I've ever seen. Mindblowing in fact. Thank you so much for these behind the scenes studio vids Uncle Larry!
I dig those movable platforms above the console for changing the position of the monitors. The smell of vintage gear powered up is like new car smell, something that just makes you feel good.
Man, these behind the scenes studio vids are great
It was amazing the contrast in your voice from the booth to the recording studio. Wow.
The minds at Blackbird are coming up with the coolest stuff. Incredible music playground.
So cool to see all those old machines. What a blast that must have been.
Truly remarkable place & people ….. & gear !!! Just awesome!!!! Already got my ´insider’ subscription!!!
These studio tours are way cool, thanks!
Tom you are a legend thank you for sharing all these amazing things with us
Lovin' the behind the scenes episodes! Ray Butts was a customer of mine back in my Nashville days... he was a National Treasure at RCA!
The father of Filteron!!! And the Super Filteron!!!
The Echo stuff is unbelievable! Thanks again!
Love this Nashville behind the scenes, cool look into the mystery world
Anybody remember the 80s? Echo plexes for $250-$300 in the back of the local paper, killer LP Customs for $350-$400?
This is the coolest channel EVER!!!
Such cool stuff to have all together at once!
I'll probably never have the opportunity to play this cool old vintage gear so I love watching this stuff. Can't wait to see it on Inside Blackbird.
Wow. How fun is that! So cool
Hey Uncle Larry!
Greetings all the way from India.
Your videos are so insightful and fun to watch, they have helped me through some dark times!
Keep doing what you doing!! God bless!
This kinda stuff is one reason why this channel rules! I mean real pros at work… not just some you tuber jackin around! Thanks TOM you rule dude!!!
Super cool insight! Ive started with some of the inside blackbird videos. It’s amazing stuff if you are into recording! Your firebird lullaby session was amazing!!!!
I absolutely love this Tom
Man , that looks fun !
thanks for the behind the scenes video uncle larry!
Hey Tom, can’t wait to see this video. I still have the EP2 from your garage sale. I almost sold it once purely for financial reasons but I pulled the add an held on to it. I’m glad I did, still sounds great and I love the smell of those things when they get cooking.
Thanks for the continued access to this old-school gear and great people at the top o’ the game.
Also loved the live-stream. Everything about it.
Asking for a friend, what’s the ballpark figure for a pro sesh with the guys that were there for a day? Track for 4 hours and mix.
That's some wild shit. Thanks man.
The mechanics of music. Cheers Tom!
I love this stuff
Just saw the new Echorec from T Rex but man this is killer! Thanks for the inside view at Blackbird man
I love this stuff! You need a 501 to represent. That’s always been my fav echo.
All that time spent showing the gear and 5 seconds with the blonde. Soooo nerdy I love it! 😆
Oooo ooo that smell, cant ya smell that smell. Wish we were there. Thanks man, you’re our favorite uncle!✌️
Speaking of echo, Tom... When you walked into that little hallway between the rooms, (around the 3:00 mark) there was an amazing echo on your video recording.
Maybe someone needs to record in that hallway.
Wonderful machines, I also like the real 'old school' solution for echo/reverb actual tiled rooms with a microphone, I recall someone saying one studio used an old meat locker for their echo-room, also those big old giant metal plates at Abbey Road, industrial revolution era recording!
Oh the memories.🤙
What a group! Man that’s cool - people say I’m nuts and I guess they are justified- I still often still use an echo plex unit just like that (not quite as sweet I’m sure) and sneak one live too. Made me smile.
Dave Kalmusky is a genius!!!!
Fun! It's like Fantastic Voyage but going inside of a TC Alter Ego!
I have two Binson Echorecs in my attic -- My brother bought them for his MCI-equipped studio in 1974... they never worked, from brand new!! We used to sell those Gibson Echoplexes in his music store ... I personally was very glad when digital reverb became a real thing ...
I’ll buy them
I really like my 60s Fender Variable Delay "Dumpster" Echo Reverb oil can delay. It's unique, muddy character gives me sounds that i don't get from anything else. I was lucky to get one that's pretty close to mint too.
Oh, man! This is going to be awesome!
I love Ebo
Old technology is the coolest beast!!
Echos Heaven!
Love the comeraderie.
Great Behind teh scenes Tom Do you know on which channel this video could be seen later on ?
Great stuff Uncle Larry, as usual. I do have to say that the "cinematic mode" works a bit strange here. It was ok in previous behind the scenes video, where camera wasn't moving around that fast, so it had time to focus and sharp. Here, when you do your stuff it kind of tries to focus all the time and often it gets quite blurry, so maybe to just go back to the regular mode and it is completely ok. Sorry, if i am complaining and bugging you, but just wanted to give a feedback of what i see from my side as a viewer. Greeting from your regular viewer from Serbia. :)
3:48 Sounds like the background noise my View Master Talking Projector I had in the '70s made when running.
Pure indulgence.
UL busting out the Cinematic mode!!
I had a Echoplex as clean or cleaner, I sold it to TC Electronics and they used it to base their pedals off of. It had lived in a closet more or less since 1964-65. Cool factor was off the chart of course, but sound and usability were in the shitter compared to a good echo pedal so it was traded for a large collection of pictures of that great American postman, Bennie Franklin. (unlike guitars and amps, I have never once missed the Echoplex)
huh I got my EP-2 only 3 years ago but I prefer it to pedals.
Hi, OT question - I noticed your reverse Firebird has the strings wound from under the tuner posts. Is that how it is with those tuners? I've never even seen a Firebird up close so I don't know. Love You, your playing and your channel!!! Now my favorite!!!
I remember playing through a tape loop Fender like these in the early 70's...mind blowing I thought here's the sound of Pete Townshend or Jimmy Page...no idea the age but what a trip...
Dave!! 😁❤️❤️❤️
Studio candy!
Man that sound...
Hey Tom, do you get much control over mike's used or their placement ? Or is it down to the engineer and producer dudes? Always wondered how much control you guys have over the sound etc
There's a cple of 'all analog' studios in LA, like 1979. One is called '64 Sound. The contrast between these lovely videos, and studios, and deep dives into classic awesome gear, is so stark at times, compared to going to a guy's house who has a laptop and plug ins and one mic pre. By Presonus lol. And there's a lot of those guys around. Well, listen to the mostly awful sounding trash on pop radio and you'll know. Thank god there's still pple around who like to do things the right way, bearing the torch! And good to know Larry's kids are going to carry the torch of vintage gear.
5:21 I wonder if anyone has done that, there must be a ton of old NAB Fidelipac radio station cart machines out there.
Little cred for Joey STANCA!
Uncle Larry, would you happen to know anybody that can identify an old hummingbird copy? I think it's a copy there's no marking anywhere on it. Probably from the 50's. Or if any of my classmates would know by looking at photos.
👍👍👍
Ah, but do these guys have a Webster-Chicago wire recorder, or a Wilcox-Gay Recordio AM radio & 78 disc cutter? ;-)
Many decades ago I had a Guild Copy Cat on consignment at a music store it was stolen. Never got it back or any compensation for the theft. I should have kept it.....oh well......:(
Who is the gentleman who was servicing/speaking about the Ecco-Fonic? I have one of those and it needs a tape disc wound and for the life of me I can't find instructions or someone who has worked on them. Would love to chat with him and get the old beast running!
Ebo at ebo customs.com
Can't you picture Scotty Moore walking in there with a big ole ES-295 and plugging in. It's all yours Tom! Dial up some slapback and some Sun Records : )
“BK Broiler”. 😂😂😂
That Echoplex was delivered to the studio by a lab-coat-wearing, wild-white-haired dude in a DeLorean.
Sounds like a 1976 Chevette😂
I'm passing out in bed. Next level 😅
strangely, i think i was most impressed with those monitor speakers that slide on the wood pieces
:)
@501chorusecho Any chance you can give us a smidge of what those amazing old machines sound like from that amazing studio? One blessed dude you are my friend!! I know you worked hard to get there, so well deserved…but if I was there and you had a feather in your buttocks, we’d both be tickled!! Thanks for sharing!!
Slap some cheese on that BK broiler
Echoplex? More like Sexoplex. Niiiice.
Are we going to get to hear them Tom ?
Of course dude…the vid will be on the “inside blackbird” subscription i told you guys about a few vids back in about a month
That’s way to much shit for me😂
do you what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. Man.
Who’s the annoying one ? Guys trying to give a lesson and he keep’s yapping blah blah
