Of all the Polish polka music I heard on Sunday radio as a kid,this song is probably the all time #1 Polish Polka hit. I can still hear the announcer Michael Dziedzic, on WBVM Utica,N.Y. promoting a local business or product by always ending the promotion by saying "And when you do,you'll be glad you did". Thanks Dad for the fond memories.
Lil' Wally became a friend of mine late in his life. I grew up in a Polish-American family of 15 in South Chicago. Mama & Daddy both worked, Mama took care of Grandpa also (arrived 1902 from Warsaw, Grandma Bydgoszcz). We didn't make a lot of money though and didn't have luxuries except for an old tall radio. My folks listened to Chicago polkas on Sunday. Autobiographically speaking, when the radio tubes burned out Daddy would get new ones, but then money became scarce and we had no more media. I still don't have it. In high school, my girl friends didn't go to the Motown dances but Chicago Marquette Garden, which hosted Lil' Wally dances. It's where I learned to do the Twist Polka. Twist the top of the body and double-hop with the feet. I danced to this song this morning. I began performing on stage as the International Queen of Karaoke in 1998. By 2000, I rediscovered my Polish long lost ancestry and danced in Chicago Polish Constitution parades by myself and not a float. The City gave me permission. I sewed and designed a costume (I have 300 now) and performed on Chicago karaoke stages, then Las Vegas 10 years, and lately Branson, MO! I became friends with Lil' Wally after he moved to Florida and bought Frank Sinatra's studios. We'd talk and I have a letter that I can use him as a reference any time. He asked me if I knew how he could get on stage in Las Vegas. He told me that he gave everything he possibly could for his beloved audience. (I didn't know that but it's how I performed for 30 years and I don't get paid since karaoke is free.) Lil' Wally said he'd like to perform once again and even die on stage and give his last breath for his beloved audience. US! I gave him a name, but I had no connections myself. This a.m. I decided to dance for 3 minutes to help shake up the body. I found this song and didn't think I knew it but as my feet did the double-hop and my upper half the twist polka the music and lyrics came back to me once again. Thanks for posting! Happy day!
God! This brings back many memories! My grandmother had these records & played them during the holidays. She came with her family to the U.S. from what was then "Russia-Poland" in about 1902. She & her older sisters danced for people on the boat coming over making some much needed money for their new country.
I grew up listening to Polish music every Sunday in Pittsburgh. Too bad Seattle doesn’t pla Serbian and Polish music on Sunday. Also, German yodeling music.
