Poor Brian Sousa. The art developers just wanted to recognize your work on the StarCraft franchise by making your image into one of the portraits in StarCraft II, but now everyone is complaining about how bad the portrait is compared to the first game's portrait...
I mean, nice intention and all, but this was a pretty obviously bad idea though. Why not use his portrait on a new unit?? The Goliath is a crowd favorite since the mid-90's.

Did he also provide the voice? Because for me that's the worst part, it's really not up to the quality standards set by original Starcraft, let alone most of the SC2 units.

Fun fact, his appearance is actually an Easter Egg. The Goliath and especially the Merc version Spartan Company portraits are modeled after Dustin Browder, who was the lead designer for SCII at the time

cybernetics that is my only explanation but i guess the goggles there and hte head piece are part of a targeting system so if he looks at an arial target the missile systems will lock on automatically, i dont know works differently between lore and ingame, same with how the goliaths in starcraft 1 operated which i have no idea how they fired missiles

The sound department in this sequel really did a luckluster job. One of the most captivating thing about the first game was the sound.

The goliath portrait in StarCraft II is based on Brian Sousa.
The Spartan Company Goliath unit portrait bears a close resemblance to Dustin Browder. This is in fact intentional, as people at Blizzard Entertainment have noted via a running joke that Brian Sousa, whose likeness was used for the regular goliath, bears resemblance to Browder, As such, the Spartan Company unit portrait was based on Browder to reflect the joke in-game.

The old voices had sooo much more feeling to them. They had a cold sound with a slight echo/fade witch really portrayed the emptiness of space. Miss 'em.

Mech Terran is meant to be about more specialist-type units in SC2, as opposed to bio, which is centered around the very generalist Marine. Goliaths are a very generalist, backbone unit with poor mobility and as such would make mech play more similar to bio than what the SC2 team wanted to go for.
Vikings, Cyclones, and Thors all fulfill the most important purpose of Goliaths (their role as the big AA for mech) but are more specialized and tailored towards different playstyles rather than Goliaths being something of a one-size-fits-all unit for most mech builds.

To be fair, if we all quit comparing this with the original Goliath and treated it like its own, unique unit.... this unit would sound pretty cool. But the bar was set too high by its BW counterpart. :/
