Goodbye Horses - Q Lazzarus

- This is the original cover sleeve of the 'Goodbye Horses' single, so people can see that it is a woman singing. The picture is of Q Lazzarus. I too, initially thought it was a man singing, but knowing that it is not, does not detract from the fact that the song is amazing and powerful. The song lyrics and composition by William Garvey (who died in 2009) and sung by Q Lazzarus.
Actual lyrics are :-
GOODBYE HORSES
He told me, "I've seen it rise,
But, it always falls.
I've seen 'em come, I've seen 'em go."
He said, "All things pass into the night."
And I said, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
I must disagree, Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
Won't you listen to me?"
He told me, "I've seen it all before,
I've been there, I've seen my hopes and dreams
lying on the ground.
I've seen the sky, just begin to fall."
He said, "All things pass into the night"
And I said, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
I must disagree, Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
Won't you listen to me."
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you.
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you.

It's a woman singing about a man (sung in past tense), and what he's telling her is all very negative, to which she disagrees. It's pretty simplistic in it's verses. The 'Goodbye Horses' lyric is clearly a metaphor. There are no horses in the song.
Basically, it's the mind we're talking about here. 'Goodbye Horses' is saying goodbye to the mind. So it could just be Death on the whole. I believe Garvey intended the song to be quite uplifting, however, he didn't have control over Q Lazzarus' voice. But as with any song, it's all down to interpretation (well, unless the singer says otherwise and screws that up)
A lot of people say 'Goodbye Horses' is about drugs, namely, cocaine. But there isn't really any indication to that. On the flipside to the 'Goodbye Horses' vinyl, is a song called 'White Lines', which could easily be misconstrued as being about cocaine, but the lyric within the song goes 'White lines over the ocean'. But even if the song is a reference to cocaine, it does not mean that 'Goodbye Horses' is.
'Goodbye Horses' was not written for the movie 'The Silence Of The Lambs (1991 Jonathan Demme)'. The song was written and released in 1988, a month after the book (by Thomas Harris) was released. The song appeared in 'Married To The Mob' (another Demme movie) which was released in theatres across America a month after the books release, thus making it impossible.
Unfortunately Q Lazzarus only made a few songs and they are very hard to come by:-
'The Candle Goes Away', which featured in the 1986 movie 'Something Wild' staring Melanie Griffith, i believe (another Demme movie) .
'White Lines' which appeared on the flipside to the 'Goodbye Horses' vinyl.
'Heaven' (a cover of 'The Talking Heads') which appeared in the film 'Philadelphia' (yet another Demme movie), which you can see a clip of (on CZcams) under the title.. 'Soul Song In The End Of The Party', you even see Q herself, seemingly wearing the same jacket as on the Goodbye Horses cover sleeve, and wearing a hat. Unfortunately the song seems to be an in-movie song, and thus not a proper recording.
Also, Q Lazzarus wrote and composed music, alongside Danny Z, for a movie named 'Twisted' by director Seth Michael Donsky released in 1996. I read a review of the film by someone, who said 'that the movie should of just been a 2 hour MTV music video, which could mean (not certain) that Q lazzarus sings some other songs...here's hoping.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was listening to this on the car ride back home, I played it on a loop, and somehow, it let me know everything was gonna be fine... now hopefully I'm finishing treatment in a month, and I'm closer to remission.
A little update (11/11/2021): finally finished chemo a week ago, there were some hurdles like some covid scares along the way, but for what it's worth, I only have my PET scan left in December, but the docs are really optimistic I defeated this on the first run.
I'm overwhelmed with all your well wishes, motivational comments, and prayers. Thank you guys from all my heart. I knew I could find kindred spirits from this song.
Big update (23/03/2022): had a bit of a bump after that PET Scan, it was found my lymphoma grew a little bit, and had to go into further treatment. I went to have Immunotherapy, and now, at last, my latest PET Scan showed a "Complete Response to Treatment", and now I'm going to have a Stem Cell Transplant.
In between these two scans, I got married and finally, I'm living with my girl. While it was quite complicated at last I see the light at the end of the tunnel, just one more round of treatment to consolidate this, and I'm done.
I'm still in awe of all of your good wishes, and how we all are enduring some fights of our own.
All the best to you!
Best of luck! You'r gonna kick cancer's ass you'll see.
Sending love
Wishing you health and happiness 💞

The impact she left with just one song. What an icon.
What an interesting life she must’ve had.
To have a great song that became popular in a movie, but didn’t want any of the fame after seeing the bullshit involved with the music industry.
Makes you wonder what could have been if she decided to pursue her career. She definitely had the voice for it.

I hope Q Lazzarus knows how much this song is appreciated, all these years later. A true classic if there ever was one.
Diane Luckey worked as a bus driver in Staten Island. She unfortunately passed away back in mid 2022.
She simply liked making music, and disliked the idea of being in the limelight so never chased fame. May she rest in peace.
fr
I'm sorry but I need you to know that what you wrote is just not correct. Diane graduated from high school in 1978 and spent the early 80's working as an au pair and live in housekeeper for a wealthy man in Chelsea in NYC. She and her group, Q Lazzarus & the Resurrection, used the tape cassette recording equipment in her employer's home to record songs that became their first album. By the mid 80's she was driving a taxi and kept her album close at hand in case she picked up anyone in the music business. In 1985 she picked up filmmaker Jonathan Demme during a blizzard and asked him if he worked in the music or entertainment industry. She played him the album and his response was, "Oh my God, what is this and who are you?" It was his interest in her music that brought it to the world, as it was used for the end credits of My Cousin Vinny, and THEN he pulled it out again as the showstopper song in his film Silence of the Lambs. She and the group did record a few more songs but after the success of their music appearing in highly acclaimed and succesful films the attention on the group faded as their style wasn't really what the public was into and used to at the time and no other filmmakers appreciated their work the way Jonathan Demm did. Record companies still did not like Diane's less than traditionally feminine appearance and by the mid 90's she and her other group members faded from the public view. She needed to be able to eat and keep herself. The royalties from "Goodbye Horses" certainly helped her originally but as time passed she understood she would need a real job out here to survive and I respect her for that. There's nothing wrong with that. But best believe she tried her best to make it out here, she wasn't rich but she made it okay on her own. I respect her to the fullest.
So full that's yum
She's dead asshole.
Rest in peace beautiful. I found out today that you were taken from us in 2022. You never got the true recognition you deserved.

It's about an awakening. An awakening to the short-term nature of life. Even as we exist, we lose things - from the things and people that are in our lives to even parts of ourselves. So while we might want to believe they'll last forever, they don't - they pass into the night (they fade away). Imagine the amazing, glorious, powerful lives we've never even seen or heard of - as well as those who we have that are now gone - and won't come back. It's not a joyful awakening - which is why the narrator in the song says "Oh no, sir. I must say you're wrong. Won't you listen to me?" because the narrator doesn't want to accept it at first.

Diane Luckey was born on December 12, 1960, in Neptune Township, New Jersey, the youngest of seven children. While attending the Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Neptune as a child, she sang in the Mount Pisgah Youth Choir. She graduated from Neptune High School and, inspired by a production of Bubbling Brown Sugar on Broadway, moved to New York City at age 18 to pursue a music career. She soon started working as a backup singer and jingle writer at Sigma Sound Studios.
In the 1980s, while making music as part of her band Q Lazzarus and the Resurrection, Q Lazzarus was working as a taxi driver in New York City to make a living. The band consisted of Q Lazzarus, songwriter William Garvey, backup singer Gloriana Galicia, Janice Bernstein, and Mark Barrett. According to Galicia, by 1985, Q Lazzarus was working in Chelsea as a live-in housekeeper and au pair for an English businessman named Swan, and the band would record vocal harmonies on cassette at Swan's house; Q Lazzarus also had a number of other day jobs at the time. Q Lazzarus was repeatedly turned away by record companies, who insisted they could not market her because of her dreadlocks. After picking up filmmaker Jonathan Demme in her taxi during a blizzard and asking him if he was in the music business, Q Lazzarus played him her demo tape, to which he replied, "Oh my God, what is this and who are you?" Her song "Candle Goes Away" was then included in Demme's 1986 film Something Wild. In the late 1980s, she moved to London to form an Aerosmith-style rock band and stayed there for five years. In 1988, Q Lazzarus's signature song, "Goodbye Horses", written and produced by Garvey, was released.[5] That same year, the song was included in Demme's film Married to the Mob. It later became a cult hit following its inclusion in a scene from Demme's 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs featuring the film's antagonist, serial killer Jame Gumb. Q Lazzarus then appeared in Demme's next film, 1993's Philadelphia, in which she performed a cover of the Talking Heads song "Heaven".
In 1996, Q Lazzarus and the Resurrection disbanded and Q Lazzarus disappeared from the public eye. As of 2015, she had been working as a bus driver in Staten Island, and filed a lawsuit against a Hasidic bus company for not hiring female bus drivers. In August 2019, filmmaker Eva Aridjis met Q Lazzarus after getting picked up in her car service in New York City, and the two soon began working on a documentary about Q Lazzarus's life, Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus which, alongside a music reissue by Dark Entries Records, has launched a Kickstarter campaign in anticipation to its 2024 release.
Q Lazzarus died on July 19, 2022, from an unknown illness.

There is no future. So I try to build a new past. The one I know. The one I could have had. The best I remember, the worst I can not get passed. One I live. One I can be in now. One that can not be done. One thats built to last. One where I am one with the one I am one with now. One where horses can always run free. Me. Now.
Too true.
Wise shit
Escuchándola este febrero 2024 ...una joya musical... 50 años y aún sigo cabalgando mi caballo de la vida ...🏃🏻🔥
Brilliant, simply.
I never knew the chorus was about the Hindu text Bhagavad Gita. In it, the five horses that pull Krishna and Pandava prince Arjuna's chariot, are symbols of the five senses. These five senses keep us tied to the physical/material plane of existence. When you can transcend the limitations of these senses and achieve a higher level of consciousness, you are leaving the "horses" behind - "flying over them." The song is about someone who was so affected by (A loss? A breakup?) they decide to give up the things that keep them tied to this world by emotion.
It makes sense why it was used in Silence of the Lambs. Bill wasn't a transgender person, as explained by Lecter. Instead, he didn't feel right in his skin and he wanted to transcend it in the most psychopathic way possible. Imposter syndrome and disphoria over oneself are as common to humanity as creating and imagining. It's that imagination that tells us there's always something more.
It truly is a beautiful song that'll sadly be a joke to most.
Beautifully put. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I love this song, it speaks to me, I dont have anybody hostage.
Give it time. We all said that when we were still "becoming"...
Make sure she's a size 14
The “lady” doth protest too much
Sounds like something a hostage-taker would say
@@tunkytunky sounds like Scroobius Pip 😁

The "I'm Complete" theme song.

Todays new years
This is the extended and remixed version of ‘Goodbye Horses’ that producer and songwriter William Garvey released as a single in 1991, soon after ‘Silence of the Lambs’ hit theaters. The original version from 1988 is featured in the movie and is two minutes shorter. I like them both.
Vaush's theme song
😅
my dad loved this song. he played it every year on the way to thanksgiving. he passed away at the age of 33 when I was 12 in 2005. and you know as i sit here with tears in my eyes 16 years later almost. I can't help and remember the thanksgivings he played this song in the car on the way to it. I'll never know why he played it specifically for that event. but it's memories like that I hold dear
@@dennismartin5821 i just asked my mom (idk why I didn't think to. i guess because it was random of a memory and question to ask). but, she said he did get it from the silence of the lambs. but the playing it at thanksgiving was because he never changed his routine and loved the song.
but yeah he was a cool guy. always wore sunglasses, and slicked his hair back, took me fishing, us camping, and to Carowinds (which is an amusement park in Charlotte, North Carolina) and would scare us with this wolf mask. I didn't think the song would make me cry but then it did. we gotta cherish those small memories because even years later it can hit you i guess.
In december of 2005 I turned 20. Your father sounds like he was a special man! And my heart hurts for you that you grew up without him. That must have been tough! But from your sentiment about your father, I think he would agree that you're a strong and caring person. You've become a good person because of the love you received, and bond you and your patents had with one another. That's very special. May you and your family be blessed and stay healthy 😊
33yrs old is extremely young to pass. I am so sorry for your loss. I was 34 in 2005. He's Gen X and most likely was a supremely magnificent guy. You will see him again someday in Jesus most high name.💜
ive never experencied anything like that and im 13yo, hope it takes a really long time for my parents to die but i kinda feel you.. stay strong bro, sorry for your loss even if it was almost 2 decades ago
That's cool it takes you back.
Most people think about a serial killer tucking to look like a chick.
I'm glad you have those good memories.
It puts the like on the comment.
It does this whenever it’s told.
Or else it gets the hose again.
Freaken hillarious

It took me and brother 2 years to finish GTA IV because we we're to busy having fun retrying the missions and exploring the city. We got the game in 2010. When we finally finished it and the credits came on at the same time as the sunset (this song comes on during the sunset in the credits in the game) it was truly bittersweet. You really never know what you have until it's gone.
Awesome heartfelt groovy song
Her voice was so unique. May she Rest in Peace 🕊️
Doesn't sound like a she. That's madd 😮
@@adamblackburnblacky6493 I thought it was a man singing too when I first heard this song. That is what makes her voice so unique.
They likely picked this song for her androgynous sound to match the psychology of Buffalo Bill.

Why do serial killers always have the best music taste?
Many have good taste, the pathetic little columbine kids for instance, or at least one of them, was certainly not wrong in liking KMFDM, who despite the stupid edgy kids, are not a band to glorify needless violence, their message is more anti government than anything, and that does not apply to all songs.
Still, some of the most disturbed people ad disturbing elements of history, both fictional and real, inspire some of the best art, especially if, like me, you are attracted to darker aspects of life, even if you have violence in you, as long as you also have compassion, it doesn't make you evil, most certainly if logic over emotion guides you (logic not meaning what is best for yourself, but rather an altruistic, even if harsh philosophy), as that is the only thing we can truly cling to as it alone has never betrayed us.
@@jkay2853 jeez, you went all out didn't you
@@ReyVro I guess. I do that sometimes, and it got me thinking.
@@jkay2853 I liked and related to what you had to say. Go all out. That's what I do all the time wether people like it or not because I'm really only doing it for the few who get it. The ones who don't relate don't matter.
@@sofiabent9129 Thanks, lol good to know somebody doesn't mind my little mini essays lol
RIP to my queen. She never got the proper chance to break through as an artist, but she at least gave the world this beautiful song. It feels right that a song this perfect and beautiful was written by someone who lived the rest of their life away from the spotlight.
True. Although, my statement could still be correct. Since Garvey was also a very recluse figure.
She did a song in Philadelphia.she sang in 2 outstanding films.legend
At least she never sold her soul to a vile industry.
