Auferstanden aus Ruinen was actually written to be cross-compatible with Das Lied der Deutschen. That also means that Das Leid der Deutschen can be sung to the melody of Auferstanden aus Ruinen.

If there's one good thing out of communist regimes, it's the songs. They're freaking beautiful and just simply catches your heart, although you can argue that they pretty much have to else they lost a major propaganda tool. Still, first time I heard Auferstanden aus Ruinen I felt a sense of hope to a nonexisting country that had been dead for 30 years at that point. They really should've used the melody from Auferstanden aus Ruinen with the lyrics of Deutschlandlied to symbolize the reunification of Germany.

It actually comes from the Holy Roman Empire anthem. Then moved on to be the Anthem of the Austrian Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Considering that Austrians are Germans I don't see what's wrong with continuing with the tradition

Austrians are also pretty similar to Bavarians (that are in Germany) and to Bohemians (that aren't even german), mostly because of history and culture.

This sounds more optimistic than the version that the DDR used. And it would be a fitting anthem for a reunified Germany rather than using the West German anthem. The lyrics of reunification and peace in Risen From Ruins with the optimistic tune of Germany Above All.

I remember when my brother's girlfriend (Tam) first came to visit (she's from Mannheim) him here in England. Now my dad and I were nervous because we both have a great fascination and appreciation for history (mainly WW2 and WW1, you can kinda tell where this is going) so he and I had to bite our tongues for most of the time she was with us as we were stuck for conversation or at least appropriate conversation. It didn't help that the moment she stepped through the door my brother ran upstairs and said to me "no German, just don't" to be honest I was kind of hoping she would help me given that I essentially had to teach my self with books, movies and songs (thank you Karl and Dr Ludwig). But my brother didn't want me bothering her.
Now, my dad was getting his lunch when She came through to put the kettle on for her and my brother's coffee. Sorry to get side tracked again but my dad and I had visited Berlin the year before in October for my 18th birthday. It was my second time visiting (this time as and adult and not with school. And while my dad had been the Rendsburg back in the 89, about a week after the wall came down, it was his first in Berlin) so my dad talked about our trip to Tam so as to make polite conversation, he mentioned the sites we saw in former East Germany and he says. "I'm glad things have changed for the better, there's peace between the East and the West Germans now"
And Tam with a sort of upset/confused look to her replied "well there is still a bit of tension between the east and the West, there's still that memory of hate between them"
And my dad realised he metaphorically shot himself in the foot. He told me that he was screaming at himself on the inside after she said that. I couldn't help but laugh.
I know this was a pretty long story but I thought some people would like the hear it and I'm sorry I repeatedly got side tracked but i got there in the end. Does Anyone else have a similar story to this, I'd love to hear it.

Thats propably because it is the same melody. The first stanza of the "Deutschlandlied" or "Lied der Deutschen" is " Deutschland über Alles" for some weird reason people don't seem to like to sing it. In this case the hymn of GDR "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" was used as text, because it was specifically made by the GDR Government to theoretically fit on the hymn of West Germany.
