FILM DESCRIPTION:
Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

I’ve always felt that Lt. Dan wasn’t thanking Forrest for Vietnam, but for saving him from what he had become in New York.
Forest saved his life twice.
Very true.. Lt. Dan went to Vietnam planning to die there.. He had no intention on returning home, so he probably had absolutely nothing waiting for him back in the States.. No family, No possessions, No house, Nothing to fall back on.. So not only did he come back to the States empty handed, He came back with no legs which would make it even 1000x harder..
"This wasn't suppose to happen.. Not to me.. I was Lt. Dan Taylor..."
"You still.. Lt. Dan.."
"...What the hell am I gonna do now..."
I like to think he saved him three times, once in Vietnam, once when he came to New York and showed him someone actually cared about him, and finally once when he became first mate and was actually able to work through what happened to him. If he had never gone on the boat, he never would have made peace with it, and probably would have slid back into self destruction@@TWOxTONE_773
"I think it's both.
Both are happening at the same time."
I think he is thanking him for saving him in Vietnam but by doing so, he’s acknowledging that he’s no longer the person he was in New York.
Lt. Dan is my favourite character of the movie, his journey is absolutely incredible. I’m happy he got his happy ending.
Incredibly complex character for sure
Agree
He found true meaning and a true friend
The fact that he married an Asian makes this comment quite hilarious 😂😂😂
@@matthewsteele7601 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love how he seems like a side character who is just a one-dimensional Army Guy and how he becomes this amazing, well rounded person who turns into Forrest's best friend. It's so great.
And becomes so incredibly loyal. Most movies would just have him turn antagonist, but nope. Lieutenant Dan basically runs the company and bought stocks so they both never have to work again.
Book is different thou, in the sequel he betrays Forrest @@TheDanbito
I think he still had depth at the start. His fixation about thinking it was his destiny to die in Nam' was pretty interesting and speaks a lot about the he looked at life.
How was he one dimensional?
@@jrsthesedays925 in the sense that all he wanted to do was die honorably fighting an enemy. That was his only dimension until he had to actually live life.
Remember Forrest wrote Jenny 100s if not 1000s of letters and she went to become a slam piece at a hippie commune. Forrest wrote one letter to LT Dan and he left his apt in NYC to come help his friend…what does that tell you about those two characters??
Thank you for adding "slam piece" to my lexicon. I will use it every chance I can.
The Lt Dan needed him before Jenny did.
People who got sexually abused by their parents as a kid can have deep psychological wounds. She tortured herself (there were no way for her to express her anger and pain towards her perpetrator) and couldn’t become emotionally close with another man. It’s only years later (maybe she went through therapy and recovered) that she told Forrest she’s not messed up anymore.
I’m not justifying hurting others’ feelings is okay if we have innocent problems ourselves. Just saying for the particular case of Jenny’s, we can give her more compassion too, instead of only judgement.
Jenny is a woman with dreams and with no ability to fulfill them. No woman would tie her life with a mentally ill man. It doesn' lead to a dream. Unless death knocks to a door
She was traumatized from the abuse she endured as a child and didn’t know how to love/what love was as a result. Her and Lieutenant Dan are two different characters with two different stories and are therefore going to make two different decisions/actions. Obviously.
I love how it's the first time Dan calls him Forrest. Before that? It was always Gump
Yep and the next time he called him forrest was at forrests house when he introduced his new bride to him
This is new for me 👍
This scene has such a great message, LT Dan was able to get past losing his legs and became a better person because of it.
And at the end of the movie he got his legs back...well sort of.
there's also the bit about feeling guilty of letting his whole platoon die... but yeah
I’m really happy that he didn’t screw over Forrest with the money and everything else you can tell he really meant it when he said I never thanked you for saving my life that right there gets me in the feels
He does screw Forrest with the money in the 2nd book
@@shamiir1812 I read the 2nd book but that was quite a while ago and I don't remember that. I'll have to re-read it.
🥲🙏
@@shamiir1812don’t care about the books
It's a shame you cut off the lines right before it starts: He had just told 2 people on the bench about their unlikely success as the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, and a man laughs and doesn't believe Forrest is the same person as the famous company as he leaves, but the old lady scoots closer with a kind "Well, I thought it was a very lovely story, and you tell it so well, with such enthusiasm." Then we get the beginning of this clip where he shows her the proof that his story was real and she looks like "oh god, this halfwit really did manage to do it..."
i wish I had a dollar for every time a video clip didn't include some important lines either before or after the scene.
I thought she made that face because LT Dan had long hair. Didn’t relies it was because she was shocked it was true.
@@georgehenderson7783 How much would you have altogether?
@@mackjohnson3918 A bundle probably! 💵
Truly one of the most amazing movies ever made. This movie always manages to get a tear out of me.
Yep me to
I was 14 movie came out and I enjoyed bits and pieces of it then but really didn't understand it. At 43 now I find myself quoting parts of this movie all the time. It really is one of the few movies in the world that encompasses every emotion.
this is the most heartwarming and my personally favorite scene from this movie...
Mine too
Hey, why ? Gr
@@asap..now. because this scene doesn't have much dialogues, character expresses it's words just through the facial expressions.... this scene says what it want to say, without even saying it... just feel this scene...
@@durveshdaryapurkar7761the fact that Forrest had no clue when he thanked him makes it even better
@@Tlack333 exactly...
The scenes with Lt. Dan are my favorite in this movie. So much heart was given to his character who played off of Forest Grump in such beautiful and funny ways depending on the scene. This is my favorite scene as well as when him and Bubba first met Lt. Dan. Wonderful.
He wasn't scared to die. Rest in peace
ummm... he didn't
@@pixelguy2482 He was afraid to live.
@@williammcdowell3718agreed. He felt he was fated to die, even felt robbed of it, but slowly realized he could make his own fate.
He didn't die 😂
Beautiful when a troubled person finally gets peace with himself
I always though Lt.Dan was appreciative of Forest saving his life, he was just to stubborn to admit it
well his character eventually came to realize what his life was and could be. earlier he felt robbed of his destiny by forrest and probably felt that forrest owed him something for that. thats why he initially found forrest. but being with forrest and his unconditional love of life made him realize all that forrest really gave him in saving his life. Eventually being engaged to a woman of asian ethnicity is the cherry on top of his character evolution. previously being a resentful and alcoholic vietnam vet, dan probably harbored a lot of dislike and possible hatred not just to vietnamese people but to asians in general due to his traumas during the war. My grandfather who was a ww2 vet held a lot of resentment towards germans, italians and japanese people for much of his life before he learned to let go of the past. i see his struggle a lot in dan's depiction in this movie and it helped me understand what he might have been going through even though physically he came out of the war with only a few scars and some medals.
He truly has one of the best character arcs of any movie. War hero ltn - turned crippled. Bitter about life. Saved by his simple soldier friend twice. By the end of the movie hes a complete person-married- and with magic legs. Seemingly happier then when we first meet him.
Lt Dan had already showed what Forrest meant to him in that hotel room on new years before Forrest had money or a shrimp boat. That scene got me good.
My fav scene too in the hotel room when he stood up for Forrest saying “he’s not stupid”
I’m so grateful to have seen this at the cinema when it first came out, there has been nothing this good since, this is a masterpiece.
Lt. Dan, what a Journey.
No.1 solution, take care of your feet Lieutenant Dan!…
Such a good film, and Lieutenant Dan’s relationship with Forrest is so special!
The hero who saved him 😌🥲
Incredible / beautiful scene, I get emotional every time 🥲
I love Liutenant Dans character arc. I feel like many people have felt like he did in the new years celebration but still need to find the peace he found here. If you reading this I hope you find yours.
One of the most poignant, and tear-inducing moments, in cinematography, in my opinion. You can see the sincerity in Lt. Dan's eyes.
That scene is one of the many reasons that film is magnificent.
When i watch this move now; i fast forward to all the Lt Dan parts....they're all my favorite of this movie. His character makes this movie
The final scene when he and his fiancé show up to Forest and Jenny's wedding gets me everytime. The way they look at each other. Lt. Dan walking and standing guard behind his fiancé while Forest and Jenny get married and he places his hand on his hand on his finance (Susan's)shoulder...❤
Forrest was mentally deficient yet he was still able to understand that gesture.
Lieutenant Daniel Taylor is my favourite character in the movie too. He is a relatable actor and Gary Sinise is such a fantastic actor definitely perfect for the role.
Lieutenant thanks Forrest looking happy for living, even when he glances down he is still smiling happy… easily a special relationship and scene!
The “fruit company” scene, when Lt. Dan invests all of Forrest and Bubba’s money, was incredible. Someone did the math, and if it had been real, they’d be worth more than any other Apple investors in history. 😎
I love how in the moment this came. The revelation out of nowhere. So real
Lt. Dan is the man you ride or die for.
I was about to ask why there are so few comments... then I realized this clip was reuploaded.
Lt. Dan > Jenny

That feeling when you make peace is so liberating
This movie beyond great.
This was the best scene in the whole movie in my opinion
there was no bad scene
@@rickhardman7376 very true, such a perfect movie
Lt Dan ! Love you
Forest Gump, un excellent film avec un excellent casting, une pépite qui ce place largement dans le panthéon des meilleurs films.
How ironic. The man who started out HATING Gump turned out to be his closest friend for life, even showing up for his wedding decades later.
He never hated Forrest. He was just a FNG in the platoon and he had to train him-which he did with smarts and firm compassion.
Lt. Dan did not started hating Forrest, more like he is mad and angry not at Forrest.
But everything, he was mad as Forrest, because he save his life when he wanted to die instead.
He mad at God why is he here and had no leg, his man at the world for treating him different.
I think the reason why he now thanks for Forrest for saving his life, because he finally found his happiness and purpose in life before he was mad and miserable after the war.
That’s why he thinks him now, because he’s so no reason why he should keep on living.
Bro went from wanting to die in the war
To be depressed, washed up
To a successful millionaire along with Forest
To finally making his peace and getting new legs as a result
And then marrying a Vietnamese woman! All thanks to the genuine care of his good mate, Forrest Gump
Interesting fact : the actor got both legs amputated for that movie..that is dedication to the art. Bravo.
No, it was greensecene. Making it look like he lost his legs, he never really cut his leg off for this.
He still handsome has his legs.
@@o_huskywolfdean7 Greenscene got invented 2 years after that movie.
I don't know how much time passed between this and the moment he lost his legs, but maybe I don't want to know because it's never too late to find hapiness again.
World needs more movies like that.
Such a powerful scene. Hopefully one day I can make my peace with God. Or rather turn to him and ask for forgiveness for being away for so long
Nobody cares

You aint got no legs lieutenant Dan
Lt Dan is a great CO.
Sweet
And I never will.
At 00:28 Gump should have snapped to attention and saluted, then Lieutenant Dan returns it. All is right in the universe.
He ordered Bubba and Gump to never salute to him, after they saluted him when they first arrived for duty, explaining to them that snipers would love to get a chance at eliminating a high ranked officer.
Gump kept to the order, even when they were back in the homeland.
@@junqone Great Explanation
The guy in the truck definitely sounds like lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump!
Technically he still never thanked him for saving his life
Jenny is the biggest villain in the history of movies. Up there with Thanos!
While Lt. Dan, redeemed himself.
My man!
She’s not a villain. She was a very damaged person having experienced childhood trauma she wasn’t able to address until an adult.
No, she was not. There were no villain in this movie.
Jenny was a complicated and damage person, that lived a very terrible life.
Best place WE’RE GOING NO WHERE
Lt. Dan we get is legs.
Now let me tell you something about lieutenant Dan he didn't do anything to deserve to be a cripple but his dad deserves his punishment
You dont get movies like this anymore at all
Later in Lieutenant Dan would then go off to colonial England and commandeer The Black Pearl.
he still didnt really thank him
Two take away's from this film.
1. Just because someone is "mentally challenged" doesn't mean they aren't successful, and possibly one of the greatest people you will ever know.
2. Almost everyone in the south thinks anyone who is "Mentally challenged" can't possibly by anything other than a "local idiot".
/s in case it wasn't apparent.
I have forgiven you all for what it's worth
The Collective
Well... technically, he still never thanked him. LOL
i think by investing the shrimp money in Apple, you could consider that as Dan's gratitude. He made Forrest rich (not that Forrest needed money but still)
