Im a drummer and Ive been watching your channel ever since I found the math rock genre I know absolutely nothing about guitar cords but nevertheless am truly thankful that people like you can inspire and teach about such a niche music type. Your videos have helped me and my friends figure out our own sound which never would have happened since I always find it hard to find people who break math rock down in the way you do. Tbh I needed this. It’s been too long since I’ve used standard tuning and at this point I’m better with other tunings. It’s great for writing music and unique songs, but if I want to jam on someone else’s guitar without changing tuning I feel like I’m worse than I used to be.

Exactly why I stopped fucking with random tunings. I got tired of going above and beyond just to play a song on another guitar. I want to be able to pick up any guitar and just go.

A video I didnt know I needed, I only use standard tuning because I think alt tunings are a little overwhelming mainly because there are so many different emo kind of tunings out there. Great lesson as always!

Empire! Empire! (I was a Lonely Estate) uses subtle dissonance often, going to the 7th or in general outlining the tritone in whatever key they're in before resolving it, continuously. Capn Jazz and Carissa's Wierd (intentionally misspelled) are also very good!
Oziel Esparza Love carissa’s wierd, a lot of their songs are tuned down a half step, and they use power chords alot which kinda surprises me since they have such a distinct vibe

I only play in standard tuning because I only have one guitar which is acoustic and I like to play various styles. What got me hooked on standard when all my friends were playing drop D or C, was the band From Autumn To Ashes first two studio full length albums were in standard which was unusual for the genre but they were my fav band.
The best and most underrated emo:
Hurl - We Are Quiet in This Room
Taking Pictures - Friends Are Ghosts
Chune - Big Hat, No Cattle
Very Secretary - Going Away Souvenir (or something)
Red Medicine - Ancient Cartography
I was really into this music in 06, was lucky enough to smoke pot with Algernon's Tank... twice, haha. Honestly, I love seeing how much the scene has grown. It's solid stuff.
I was at Braids final show in Chicago in 99 or 2000. They played with Sarge and Alkaline Trio at the Metro. Alkaline Trio were just starting to get popular at that point and was the very fist band to play. I actually went for Alkaline Trio as I was more into Punk at the time, they were where Punk and Emo intersected. Alkaline Trio, The Promise Ring and The Get Up Kids were the gateway bands for me. I became a Braid fan because of that show and even though that was announced as their last show they played one more show in Champaign Urbana where Braid went to college and I made the 3 hour drive with 2 of my friends to see that show as well.
Braid got me into many more bands. There was a 5 night show at the Metro for Flower Booking the fall of 2000 and l went for bands like Hey Mercedes, Jets to Brazil, Jimmy Eat World, Joan of Arc and Burning Airlines and became a fan of Don Caballero and The Sea and Cake. That really broadened my interest in music and I became less interested in genres and was more open to older Jazz, Blues and Country as well as post-punk and 80s Alternative and Indie.
I think the 2 bands that really defined that jazzy math rock sound early on were Cap N Jazz and Braid. While I love Braid, Cap N Jazz are the band that I still listen too often today. They add alot of Flamenco type rhythms as well and were more chaotic and dynamic to me. Braid was ultra clean and Bob's vocals were sort of naturally compressed. Tim's vocals are like a Jackson Pollock painting; it's a beautiful mess when chaos becomes order. Sorry for the long nostalgic ramblings, I'm 39 and I'm at that point in life where the memory of being young comes to you like flashbacks. Your videos and playing brings me back to those years, music was really alive then and so many great bands played in Chicago during that period. I feel fortunate to have been able to experience it.
Thanks for sharing! You weren't rambling at all. I love reading stories like this, and I really wish I could've experienced those shows and the scene at the time. I think that's what makes it such a nostalgic thing is that it only lasted fro a short while, like any music scene people make themselves part of. I can't say thanks enough to my friends that introduced to bands such as Braid, the get-up kids and so on.

@@chrismatassa8999 Thanks man. Check out the band Standards for some good tapping, the dude in the band, Marcus Mena, I think his name is off the top of my head. He has a tapping compostional tutorial book that's really useful for learning the proper technique.

Great video! Four minute mile was my introduction to the genre as well. It's funny but I have always used these chord forms in my writing, across different bands/styles over the years. It wasn't until watching your video that I realized how much of an influence mid-late 90's emo has had on my writing style. Cheers!

Just commented about Races to April on your Colin Phils episode and now seeing this one... info about the guys: originally from Yorktown, VA but the band was really at home in Harrisonburg, VA where I went to school with them at JMU. Amazing guys, their music has had a pretty lasting effect on me. Played a lot of house shows in town, as well as various venues in VA and the surrounding area. Signed to the short lived Tinted Amber Records that if I remember right went under not long after the record came out. Crazy to see someone else still loving that record, it’s fantastic.

Secondly, there's absolutely no reason that Funeral for a Friend should be a guilty pleasure. Their first EP and first two albums are incredible. Songs like Roses for the Dead and Hospitality are beautiful.
Hello. Coheed are one of my favorite bands. Not too keen on the latest release but that doesn't bother me, they still have plenty of awesome music. I think I prefer hours to casual dressed.

As far as personal fav emo bands (just to name em, if anyone gives a shite) : appleseed cast, elliott, chamberlain, american football , rites of spring and texas is the reason for me 🤘
The new Coheed release is just pretty good to me. I'm not a fan of much '80s rock and especially not the arena rock sound half the songs have. Coheed is my favorite band though and nothing will ever replace IKSSE:3 as my favorite album - but I so badly miss the sound they used to have. It's funny this video popped up when it did because just last week I was thinking about how Second Stage Turbine Blade has a ton of emo chords and arpeggios that I never really thought about before.
Yeah, it most certainty does! It's where I learned a few of them. My favorite is the Sus 2 shape, that's used loads on IKSSE too.
Godsend Conspirator, Time Consumer, and Junesong Provision are some of my favorite songs to play, especially Godsend, and like you said, they're full of them. The bridge into the end of Devil in Jersey City also has some great emo influences. That's why it's such a bummer to me that most of their new stuff is far more straightforward with power chords and metal riffs.

This is awesome! Thanks for doing this fun musical exploration. You've got me all excited about the genre now. I'm gonna talk about some of my favorite emo music. I was hoping you would include a work by Tom Delonge, who has made copious amounts of pop-emo, particularly Boxcar Racer would've been a great one, it was one of the most emo records I have ever listened to. And it is important to reference The Cure, I think. If you are unconvinced, I recommend the album Galore by The Cure. The Freelance Whales (especially Diluvia) would be good inclusions as well. The truth is that there is SO much awesome emo music, from all different approaches and sub genres, that I am sure it was extremely tough to pick just a few examples for this video. Thanks!

I'm not sure if they qualify as emo but I'd recommend Pedro the Lion, from their 1998 debut, until now (only 5 albums!) And Deja Entendu by Brand New; whom I'm sure you've heard of. And Sunny Day Real Estate, who you must know too; I mention them mainly as seeing them live in London in 2011 was an incredible experience, after listening to their music for so long without seeing them perform.

all but 2 of cap'n jazz's songs are in standard tuning, and they use 7ths, and add 9's quite a bit. if i thought about it more i could probably think of some others but no one else comes to mind. as a side note, i don't think i've ever learned any emo songs that use 9ths chords, but im sure ive heard quite a few of them and just haven't realized it.
also, just wanted to say i dont think it would be 'Csus2add7add9', it'd be Cmaj9sus2 (or Cmin9sus2) but thats just nitpicking.
for a recommendation, its not really the type of emo that you're talking about, but i'd still say its emo: salvia palth - melanchole. it has some super cool vibes, and one of the few albums i've listened to that i really like all of the songs on it.
edit: almost forgot cowboys aren't indians. their first ep is also really good.

What are the two songs not in standard? Olerud and the acoustic Ooh Do I Love You?
Olerud and Forget Who We Are are in FACGCE. if you want to check, go to the bandcamp for analphabetapolothology and read the description. it says somewhere that two songs (i believe they are the two I listed) are in the Promise Ring's C Tuning. I believe this is FACGCE because there is a picture somewhere online from caP'n jazz playing a show at a school and on the board it says "Olerud - FACGCE".
Also, if you want to learn those songs, I know a little about each: Olerud's intro is a C with an octave, then a C and a maj7, then a C5. (most of it is rhythm on the C octave) and Forget Who We Are's baseline is mostly just C and then for the energy building goes to E, then to G, and back to C.

The way I see it the sound of emo when we get to a more pure representation is that which is sad jazz with a touch of moodiness but unlike jazz which uses really full chords an emo chord tends to omit some fretted notes to leave only the saddest part of the chord. So it sounds more stripped down and to the point. Jazz given the punk soul so to speak is how Ive always described it. Evergreen is my example of the most archetypal example of emo in a very pure form before getting that more mid west emo sound. 7th chords are key to the sound as I see it. Its one of my favorite way to resolve typically. Oh and Duster’s Inside Out. Whether you categorize them as emo or something more obscure its hard to deny that that song was made for fans of 90s emo. These days I mishmash 90s emo and screamo so much that it really does feel like one genre. In the way Iwrotehaikus…… writes music.

One of my favourite albums of all time. It’s so easy to overlook, but the songwriting is so well done and the stylistic execution is wonderful.
Adam Shaw yea you’re probably right. Was mostly going off the fact that they use a lot of these emo chords. But the cool thing with title fight is that they use these emo chords and power chords without sounding specifically punk or emo.

Albums you should check out. Just Married by Glocca Morra, self-titled by I kill Giants, self-titled by Stippling, Self-titled by Joyce Manor. The first 3 have alot of math influence, joyce manor is just good ole emo

And I think "Clarity" by Jimmy Eat World is OGaf (lol).
Awesome stuff. Yeah, those chords are pretty versatile, if you play them as arpeggios or as individual notes you can make some cool riffs too, like the intro to FCPREMIX by The Fall of Troy.

I just found your channel and I've been really enjoying trying to learn all this. Thank you for putting this out there. Also that SG is rad. As a strat player I'm curious to how it plays. I've never owned a Gibson.
Hello. Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I haven't got the SG anymore. It was well made, and really easy to play. I sold it and put it towards a telecaster. They are rather different from one another, SG had a slim D shape neck and was quite wide, tele that I have has a C shape that is thicker and is narrower, The SG has 12 inch radius, the tele 9.5. The list goes on. I prefer the C shape neck the tele has, it was easier to play faster on the sg but I would get hand cramp quite often when playing non open chords, especially barred chords!
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock My SG's been under my bed for 15 years. Way too headstock heavy for me. Maybe I should stick a bigsby on it to balance it.

You should check out the band PARK if you haven't already. They're an incredible band with that emo style. The album building a better is my fav but they're all amazing.
