    It was crazy to listen to Steve's and Ryan's reminiscing about Missoula! I graduated from the school of forestry at U of M in 2000. Must have spent half my time in the computer lab in the basement of the journalism school! Listening to this was a great walk down memory lane. I graduated high school in 92 but served a mission in Italy and spent a few years working construction, hunting, fishing, and backpacking before I decided it was time to go back to school. Thank for laughs!

  • @Luke-mp3lj
    @Luke-mp3lj Před 3 měsíci +2

    In my opinion, as for the use of tech while hunting, drones give the hunter an “unfair advantage”. They can find and follow and animal. You could even chase or “push” an animal. With a lazar range finder or red dot you do get an advantage but only to confirm your shot. You still have to get to the animal and have a shot bf the advantage of tech comes into play, this allows you to make a more ethical shot and wound less animals. Cell cameras are right at the edge of what I would consider “ok”. At least you have to go out and set it up, and it’s not exactly live.

    back when I was hunting there were strict laws against crossbows and even more so silencers which we now call suppressors but now lots of hunters routinely use them so just because we quickly ban new tech don't mean it will remain banned in the future

  • @rogerfuglsang2088
    @rogerfuglsang2088 Před 3 měsíci +2

    This conversation could go even further. Where do you stand on crossbows? I think all this technology makes it easier to keep harvest ethical, quick kills and less waste. The people that hunt and fish by the rules will always follow the rules. The people that brake the rules will always do it no matter the technology they have to help them. If the penalties get harsh enough to truly scare people they will stop poaching animals.

    If Wisconsin allows live targeting most folks "in the know," are suggesting the state will lower bag limits. As a Wisconsin trophy Fisher who practices primarily catch and release, I'm okay with it. My 80-year-old uncle who likes to keep and eat everything would be against it.

    • @danorris5235
      @danorris5235 Před 3 měsíci

      I'm definitely in the same camp as your uncle. I fish to eat them, and don't hate catch and release anglers.
      What does drive me a little nuts is some (nowhere near half, even) are definitely playing fish to exhaustion, have them sucking air for three minutes, opted not to harvest the fully legal fish because they are never going to eat a fish, and then slam it into the water and make the claim it'll live because it limped away. I've watched that happen at least once every season since I was twelve.
      With livescope that's an increasing problem and the bad anglers can do more damage than they already are killing both trophy fish before their time and potential harvest for those who want to consume the resource.

    One of the issues of the line of thinking that “we can wait until it comes to the point of an emergency.” Is that is exactly what the people who want it NOW have a motive to push towards so they can get what they want. There’s countless examples of this in the political sphere. Think about Afghanistan turning into Iraq, and the Patriot act, both being ideas that were definitely floated before 9/11 that caused uproar. That road through Alaska could follow the same lines.

    Random thought. Maybe you hit on the lynchpin to the problem when you brought up reverence. If you want resolution to the pro v anti hunting question appeal to each sides shared reverence. That's where good faith conversation lives. If you want to balance sustainable hunting, resource management, and the market, appeal to and reward those who come from a position of reverence. Reward those who trend toward increasingly primitive methods and disincentivize trends toward making it easier.
    The industry won't like it, because they are solely dependent on those who trend away from the primitive.
    It's a problem for anything deserving of reverence when an industry is rewarded for ignoring those who feel it. Traditional and primitive hunters are the most reverent of hunters, and both major magazines supporting the practice seem to have disappeared from my local supermarket shelves in the past few years

    Sorry. I don't think ridiculous equipment should be utilized to further damage the fisheries around me. Yes, some would use it responsiblely, but unfortunately in my personal experience they're a small minority.
    We've dealt with this level of tech before (at least in WI) and decided you're not allowed to abuse it to gain an edge on hunting and fishing.
    You do not get to use your drone to drive deer. You do not get to use electronics to locate or call target species. You do not get to use engineered nets of hooks to troll with. We don't even allow baiting for several species because of a blatantly unfair advantage it creates.
    This is a classic case of rich people with no/low skill in a given sport wanting to purchase something that circumvents the lifetime of experience and built skill us "poors" have honed to be considered good at it and the rich will cry if they don't get their way.
    Just learn to fish like an actual angler and participate in the sport as intended or leave your tackle in the truck.
    And now people somehow think live imaging sonar should be legit on WI waters? I'd say there's a screw loose, but the reality is they need to visit the hardware store because several clearly fell out.
    Mean? Sure. Untrue? Nope.
