    How do you adjust the intonation with that combo tail/bridge combo?

    • @appetiteforguitar
      @appetiteforguitar  Před 9 měsíci

      It's got two small screws in the bridge which push against the posts. I was very concerned about the intonation but it's perfect. They nailed the engineering of it. This is an SE guitar (cheaper) but it's the same bridge as on the Core which is their top of the line. The posts are brass and it has small brass inserts under each string which help them resonate more.

    I've been playing for over 30 years now and I own a Gibson LP Custom, two Gibson SG (Standard & Custom), 3 Fenders American (Strat, Jaguar, Tele), all in all $20k+
    For about 6 months I have exactly this Pauls SE and the other guitars have been collecting dust since then as the PRS blows them skyhigh out of the water! This thing is a beast! Playability is stellar, the craftmanship extraordinary and the pickups are miles better then the ones on my other guitars, period. The circuitry is awesome, from chimey clean chords with awesome separation to growling overdriven tones without a hint of muddyness (that a word?), it can do it all.
    Only downside are the tuners, these are ok, but were exchanged for higher tier tuners.
    And again, the craftmanship is spotless; compared to my other guitars, these look like they've been on the road for a year fresh out of the box. Not a single one of them were not worked on by a luthier after purchase, something was always amiss. But this PRS left me spechless after unboxing, the quality is unmatched, although it's only a SE.
    Granted, the looks are not for everyone, but I like it.

    I had that one, looked exactly the same. I loved it… except that bridge, can’t deal with that bridge, got used to thickness of the neck, but had it been a little thinner I’d have liked it more. Sold it to a friend and he loves it, had a set of dragon 2 pups and put them in, sounded amazing.

      @appetiteforguitar  Před 9 měsíci

      The bridge is an interesting one... same as the Core model... seems good. I was definitely apprehensive, but so far on this one the intonation has been spot on. The thick neck I really like - I have a Slash Les Paul which has a very similar neck but is 1kg heavier... so this is great for standing for a long time.

    The problem with PRS is only aesthethics. It's neither a classic (50-70s inspired) not modern (from the 80s on). They try to be a one guitar fits all, ending up not belonging anywhere. And their chosen aesthetics just reinforce that notion. But they're excelent instruments, no doubt

    • @appetiteforguitar
      @appetiteforguitar  Před 9 měsíci

      It's a bit of a shame it can fall between two stools. It took me a while to even try one. Now I have though, it really is fantastic. Gives the best of a Les Paul and a Strat. Particularly the Paul's guitar with it's light weight, chunky neck and great single coil sounds. I hope to get a full review up soon.

      I agree with you. But I've found that many PRS guitars suffer from the same problems that most Gibsons have-excessive weight. Because these manufacturers use mahogany (a wood commonly used to build fine furniture), their instruments tend to be quite heavy. Good for sustain, bad for overall tone.

    I like that colour top. I would love to find one in a Pawn shop, but I could never justify spending the brand new price for one. Harley Benton's CST24 is the kind of thing I could get in this sorta design.

      @appetiteforguitar  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Harley Benton is a good choice for sure. I got quite lucky with this one... still substantially more than the CST24 but cheap-ish for a PRS. Time will tell but I think this is a keeper. Now I have to sell some of my Harley Bentons so I can hold on to it!

    I would offer Lexus as a comparison. The automobile brand was started in 1989 (PRS was founded in 1985). Lexus is now rated by Consumer report as the number 2 rated car when it comes to reliability and #5 among luxury cars. PRS rates no lower than 5 on all of the rating lists that I've found.
    It is not that PRS Guitars are "Too engineered". The reality is that the more established brands used a combination of SOME engineering along with a lot of trial and error over the decades to hone in on their sweet design spots. PRS looks at what has worked on other brands and why, then they (he) worked to find their own unique sweet spots in between the various brands. That's not over-engineering, it's good business practice. It's a good design philosophy. PRS is actively working to establish its OWN aesthetic without recreating the wheel.
    Every negative review that I've come across has followed the same theme... "This feels good; These are premium; Those looks great; that sound really good... I just don't like it."

      Finally I meet someone who is not a fan of 'the birds'. I find them garish and ostentatious. They would look terrific on a coffee table! But on a guitar, I just can't do it. Just cutting down the Mahogany and Rosewood trees to build these guitars undoubtedly killed or displaced hundreds of birds. Memorializing these dead birds on the fingerboard of an electric guitar is in extremely bad taste.

    I had a 2021 PRS SE Custom 24 Floyd I got used from Guitar Center……
    Bad documentation, bad volume pot, loose strap nuts.
    Aside from that, don’t like the bridge location, the fret radius, the neck profile, and cutaways for fret access. Felt like playing a bass but only 25” scale length.
    The ONLY things I liked were the ebony fingerboard and the grey quilted maple aesthetic
    My Ibanez S body blew it out of the water.

    • @appetiteforguitar
      @appetiteforguitar  Před 8 měsíci

      Ouch, shame about your bad experience there. My PRS has been a pleasure to play so far. I hope to be able to post a full review soon. I have an Ibanez too - RG model. Very nice guitar as well... the biggest difference for me is the neck. Wizard III on the Ibanez is slim and fast. PRS big and chunky - I really like both.

    • @TheHeroJourneys
      @TheHeroJourneys Před 8 měsíci

      @@appetiteforguitar I think the neck shape is a product of the play position. The PRS to me emphasis a large empty area at the bottom of the guitar showing off the quilted maple, however the whole guitar becomes much longer. It seems it is derived from acoustic guitar dimensions so the bridge is mounted in the center of the body. This likewise affects the reach, the cutouts, the need for counterbalance with the heavy body, and the C-neck and fret radius due to the wrist angle so far from the body, more similar to a bass.

    nice guitar, I own a core custom 24 with the same switching system and its brilliantly versatile, i am very ocd about sculpted neck heels and the PRS heel is fine, what helps it further is the spoon cut in the lower horn where it actually should be, i can access the 24th fret no problem, although its a very nice guitar, it does not meet my requirements, i gig my guitars all the time so i require ss frets, after 3 months of gigging my custom 24 it had visible fretwear on the second and third frets, this is not acceptable as i gigged my ibanez AZ regularly for 4 years with no visible fret wear, this is now the bench mark for me which means i will not buy guitars in the future unless they have ss frets, why should i tolerate less?,, the last 2 guitars i bought were harley benton fusion 3s with ss frets, i did this purely out of curiosity and was skeptical because i thought they would be too good to be true, it turns out during a gig they can both do what the ibanez and PRS do for a fraction of the price, in fact they both cost under 400 euros including shipping, thats crazy for what you get, dont be a brand bunny folks, buy a guitar that suits your requirements and remember to ask yourself, what am i getting for my money!!!

      Interesting, I've not tried the Fusion 3 yet. I got the EX-84 Modern EMG which I reviewed I while back. Great guitar. No ss frets though much like this PRS. I'll have to see how this one holds up. So far I'm enjoying it a lot. The comfort and versatility sold me on it. The Les Paul style big chunky neck on a guitar which can also sound like a strat won me over.

    • @darkestfugue
      @darkestfugue Před 9 měsíci

      @@appetiteforguitar its a great guitar, the PRS body is a beautiful fusion of elements from a strat and a les paul with the weaknesses of neither, and with the coil splitting the best tones of both, if playablility and versatility is what you want you can go wrong, and its pretty as a supermodel too, my only gripe are the mini switches, a 5 way switch with a push pull tone pot would achieve the same thing without the clutter but its a small nit pick, as for the fusion 3 i have 2 HH versions but both are quite different, one has the roasted maple neck and floyd rose and one has the non locking wilkinson trem with a satin maple neck and ebony board, amazingly, i think i like that one more the neck feels nicer in my hand the ebony board is gorgeous and its a very light guitar which is great for gigging, the covered pickups are pretty low output but get your levels right and they sound pretty sweet

      If you have actual fret wear after only three months, then you got an extremely rare and unlikely bad batch. To the point that they’ll redo them under warranty. I’ve used my core models everyday as a working session player for years and years, and literally don’t have even a single mark on any of my frets. Either you got a bad batch (which pretty much never happens), or something else is going on…

  • @SeattleMartin
    @SeattleMartin Před 6 měsíci +1

    I've never owned a PRS, but I've played a few. The upsides for me- they have nice necks, the fretwork is good, neck shape is good. They are comfortable to play standing up. They seem to stay in tune well, the tuners and bridge seem good quality. The downsides for me-I'm not impressed by the sounds, esp the clean sounds, they don't inspire me. The body shape is too small for my taste, and I do not care for the shape of the body. Also, the garish figured maple tops rub me the wrong way for some reason, as well as some of the colors used. Maple like this would be better seen on a coffee table or a side table than a guitar. Lastly, PRS guitars are (in my mind) associated strongly with the rock and metal communities, and I find that kinda limiting. Not a fan of this green guitar at all. Maybe if it was made of alder I'd look at PRS more favorably. The SAS was kinda cool, though.

    • @appetiteforguitar
      @appetiteforguitar  Před 6 měsíci

      I totally get it, they can be pretty divisive. This particular one does play wonderfully, but it's not for everyone. I actually gave in to GAS and got myself a Les Paul Traditional Pro in ebony. Simple but really beautiful. I'll hopefully get a video up on that one soon.

    • @SeattleMartin
      @SeattleMartin Před 6 měsíci

      Can't wait to see the LP video-I'm sure it's a beautiful piece. Lastly about PRS: I forgot to mention the birds- I do not care for the birds. In fact, putting birds on a fingerboard is a bit of a paradox for me, seeing as how in all likelihood several tropical hardwood trees were cut down in order to build these guitars, killing an untold number of those very same birds, as well as other forest animals. I might feel more accepting about this brand if they were not so ostentatios and glitzy. Take care of yourself.@@appetiteforguitar

    Are they that new? I remember seeing full-page ads for PRS guitars in the late 80s. It's weird how polarizing they are. The guitarist from The Warning is a "PRS Signature Artist" or whatever they call it. At one point they were touring with Halestorm, and Lzzy Hale gave her a Gibson. After, in an interview, she said "It's about time that girl played a REAL guitar." I thought that was brutal. Personally I'd be ecstatic to have a PRS.

    • @appetiteforguitar

      I think they started selling around 1985... That Lzzy Hale comment is brutal! I feel like PRS do great guitars. I'm definitely a fan now that I've tried all the options and right now this suits me best - feels great and sounds great. I think a lot of hate comes from not having tried them and having an in-built perception of what they are... a brand is just a brand - if it feels right to you, it's right.

    I have 5 different PRS SE models acquired along the last 8 years, including the one analysed here ( the "Paul's" model ). To me, PRS are the best guitars, the almost absolutely perfect ones ( since absolute perfection doesn't exist in anything... ). Much, much better than Gibson. And, though I love Fender Strats, they are a very different kind of guitars, so it's hard to compare PRS with Fender. But I think everybody has to recognize that Fenders are not perfect guitars, they have several small problems hard to solve and deal with - just as those of the entirely single coils pickups, on the one hand one of the main secrets of the Fender sound, and on the other just the inherent noise. So, that's what I think. And, to finalize, I would like to remark that I knew PRS through Mike Oldfield in 1992, and Mike is, no doubt, one the best guitarists in the world, he even reinvented the guitar technique - though almost nobody recognizes this... Thanks for the excellent video.

      Thanks so much! I couldn't agree more. I have a Fender and might do a full in depth comparison of the two when I can. The Fender is super but at the moment the PRS is the guitar I turn to. Gibsons are interesting beasts... the inconsistencies (even within the same line) are a blessing and a curse. If you are lucky enough to find 'the one' it can be pretty spectacular... it might just taking some searching. Mike Oldfield... wow, that's so cool! I need to go back and take a listen. Tubular Bells is a classic but I know his catalogue stretches far beyond that. If you like this type of content, please think about subscribing, that's what helps me most at the moment... I'm on the slow crawl to 1,000 which is when I'll hopefully be able to spend more time on these. I just did a review of the PRS btw, if you have time you might find it interesting. @@nelsonsoucasaux2751 Thanks! Yes, I was bowled over by the PRS. I sold the vast majority of my guitars recently... so I must admit I do have a Les Paul shaped hole in my collection again. I tried the very cheap Epiphone LP Studio E1 and a couple of Gibson LP Studios. The first Gibson I have to say was incredible, it felt like having a lion in your hands. I've rarely heard such depth in a simple G chord! It was immediately inspiring... But that's the rub - the next Gibson on the rack was quite different and not exactly to my taste with a slightly smaller neck and much heavier despite being the same model in a different colour. The Epi was actually very good and not roughly 8x the weaker guitar as the price would indicate. It did have relatively muted pickups but the 'feel' was decent - light weight with a reassuringly chunky neck for such a cheap guitar. Actually very tempting... I have a couple of Seymour Duncan Slash pickups lying around so they might end up in the Epi in a future video... ahh, the GAS continues! I hope your Epi serves you well too and isn't too maligned vs your PRS collection 😅

      @@appetiteforguitar, I began giving up Les Paul a short while after I got my 1st PRS (SE, Santana model) 8 years ago. As I told you, along the immediately following years I got more 3 PRS SEs, all of them are to me the best guitars. And 2 years ago I got my 5th, the 'Paul's Guitar', also awesome but different from the usual PRS tone. The sound is a little bit 'harder' and the action of the strings also a little bit higher, so I took some time to become completely used to it. I truly love the 'Paul's guitar', but, personally, I don't think it is the best PRS, it's one of the best I have. But to me the more typical PRS remains being the Custom 24, just the first one that, to my knowledge, became famous a short while after the release. So, if the only PRS you have is the great 'Paul's guitar', I would like to recommend you buying a Custom 24 (SE) as soon as economically possible to you. I think you will easily notice the difference in tone, it sounds more 'transparent' and soft, as well as all other PRS SE I have ( the Standard 24, the Santana model and the 245 ). As to the 245, I consider it the 'Les Paul' made by PRS, and much, much better. It may be nice to those still addicted to the Les Paul Gibson or Epiphone, but still reluctant regarding PRS. With my best regards, yours, Nelson.

      @MacMFerok? PRS core line still blows Gibson out of the water..

      PRS upper end models are elite, among the best in the world. The lower end is affordable and a better product than competitors at this price point

      @MacMFer can't you read I said American made not made in America. It doesn't matter what I said, Gibson is way overpriced for the quality control of their guitars, blemishes in the paint, tool marks on the fret board, nuts cut bad. If I'm gonna spend three thousand dollars for a company's standard line, it should be close to perfect. You're paying for the name with Gibson, not quality. You're right. I would never spend 3 grand for a p o s.

    I felt the same way too until I found the PRS SE DGT.

      @@appetiteforguitar Thx, just got the gold top this week. Was thinking PRS had no soul until now, but kinda feeling different on it. As a girl, I’m looking for a lighter guitar than LP, but great sounding, and good quality for the price. Was on a Fender duo sonic before this, but just didn’t have that “it factor” but this SE DGT really feels like something special.

      I played an American DGT last year, and I thought it was a very nice guitar. It had a gold top, which I find more acceptable to me than the far-too-fancy maple tops. I've also played a 418, a 513, and some custom 22s and 24, and a few others. They are well-made instruments, for sure. Mostly it's the body shape that keeps me from embracing this brand. And the birds-ugh, not for me.

      @@SeattleMartin I actually like the birds, but the SE DGT Gold Top has circle dots with moon crescents instead you might like that better ,more traditional like.

      @skye7690 Ah, the Fender duo sonic is pretty cool too. But a connection with a guitar can be very personal. My niece plays a Mustang and she loves it because of the light weight. I just got myself a Les Paul too with an extremely fat neck and it weighs over 4kg... 😅. It should be back breaking, but somehow it's quite balanced - I think a good portion of that crazy weight is in the neck as well as the body on that specific one. I love it but I'm wondering if the PRS will still really be the one I turn to. Time will tell. I want to post a review of the LP when I get time. I hope you enjoy the DGT. It sounds like you got a really good one that suits you well... 👍

    PRSs had a dead note problem where in the proximity of 12th fret certain sounds disappeared quicky due to vibration of the neck.

      Interesting... never heard that before. This ones got brass inserts in the bridge which are meant to help resonance. I'll bear it in mind when I review...

    I have a PRS SE custom. My friend owns the "real thing". We compared them and the only difference is entirely visual, and very minmal. Same feeling, same pickups, same sound, same everything that matters. It's my favorite guitar to play. I had 9 guitars and I sold all the others except for my squier and PRS SE.

      I had a very similar experience. This PRS just feels right to me. It took me a long time to find. The process of selling a few of my others has already started. Think I'll keep this and a small handful of my best.

    They are incredibly polarizing for absolutely no good reason. They are guitars. They do the job they are designed to do well. That's it.

    • @SeattleMartin

      They are guitars designed to be attractive to young impressionable men who are into rock and metal.

      I hated those birds for years and thought they were corny-a gimmick. Then when I was looking for a semi solid guitar, I tried a PRS SE Hollowbody standard with all mahogany body-it sounded great. All of a sudden I didn't care about the birds-the tone is there and that's all that matters.

    • @SeattleMartin
      @SeattleMartin Před 6 měsíci

      I also do not care for 'the birds'. They are garish and in bad taste. (They would look great on a coffee table!) Your other comments are right on as well.
