A treasure for sure. My husband and I lost all four parents in an 8 month span. We could not catch our breathe between each passing. We miss them so. It only takes two generations to be forgotten. What a wonderful endeavor to record bits of her history.

I guess its like my dad told one of his friends when he said all of the old men at church was gone dad told him we are the old men now .
I lost my Granny to cancer in 1969 and miss her every day of my life. Your Granny brought tears to my eyes just listening to her reminisce about her brothers looking after her. When all of that generation is gone we are losing a lot of good ole stories. We used to gather around the wood stove in the evening or sit in the living room with a good fire in the fireplace and listen to my Granny and her sister tell such stories. Thanks for sharing her with us

I was 5 year's old last time I snapped bean's and watched mama canning away garden spoils, this video like many, reminds me of great time in my life I don't want to forget.

What a wonderful video Tipper. Your sweet Momma, I could sit & listen to her all day. Reminds me of my Mamaw. She would've been 81 this October but she's been gone 2 1/2 years. I miss her more each day. What I wouldn't give to have just one more day with her. Thank you so much for sharing.

My grandmother lived to be 94 years. This kinda brings back memories. Of her ,,all her hair turned grey. But she still got a round pretty good. She died there at house her in the mountians ,

I grew up in the same home with my Mother and both Grandparents and a few other family members (all gone now). Although at times things got hard, my memories are sweet. I did the same thing with pecans when I was little and 50 years later just the smell of a pecan will make me sick. Your Granny is precious, God Bless her and y'all too! Thanks for sharing!

I’m from southeastern KY and my grandmother we called her mammy, let me eat as many peaches as I wanted when I would toddle over for lunch as a little kid. One time I got foundered...I never ate peaches again! ..well, until I was an adult. I never felt nauseous, but those peaches came right on out! My family still laughs about that ‘til this day. That was about 54 years ago.

I live in central Arkansas, near Petit Jean Mountain, and in my early 20s I worked as an aide at a nursing home, and we had 4 out of 5 siblings of one family, and that all used the word foundered, particularly when they had come back after a day out with their kids for the holidays or their birthdays. They were a wonderful family, and all had good kids that took them out often and visited often. They were a joy to take care of too!
One more thing to share-- my husband who was born & raised by very proper people in CA loved Appalachian. He loved r words, all the characters in my family & their stories. In fact he was the one that helped me embrace r culture & to quit be ashamed of the ways that make us so unique. He especially loved r words, foundered would have been at the top of his list, no one in his family would have ever gone overboard with food. We did all the time!!! Ur channel continues to bring light into my past & I love it so much.

I through-up watermelon when pregnant and it took years before the sight of it did not make me sick, Decades ago my youngest overate green bean casserole and was so sick. Taking care of him has made it impossible for me to even look at that. You are truly blessed to have such a beautiful soul for a mama.
I was very fortunate to know 2 grandmothers and 2 great grandmothers. (2 grandfathers and 1 great grandfather) I recorded their stories and wrote their histories. My children love them.

I have to admit this one brought tears to my eyes missing my Mamaw. My last grandparent passed away in 2011. I was very close to my Mamaw Mabe. I was blessed to take care of her for the last 6 months of her life. I took my daughter who was three at the time. She got some Appalachia exposure. My husband's in the Army and we move around quite a bit. Right now we're in Colorado soon to come home to Virginia because he's retiring. We should be home by August. I miss the real mountains. Thank you for this video and the memories

Your mother is so precious. My family used the term "foundered" and still does...especially when we have family reunions...everyone is sitting in the front yard moaning and groaning about being foundered. LOL. Thank you Tipper for sharing Granny with us.

I can remember my pap pap going and digging up new potatoes for a meal. They tasted better than any potato ever. I still to this day know that grandmas food tasted better cause she cooked on a wood stove.

when i was a kid i wasn't too much into veggies of any kind, the first time i spent a week at my memaws house that's what she had and cooked, was veggies out of her garden. it was either eat or go hungry and you know granny's, they love to see you eat, so i ate, and we had green beans and new taters and fried okra and boiled squash and tomatoes every day of the week. that is what got me hooked on fresh garden veggies, to this day most of my fav foods come straight out of the garden. she grew everything, that's where my love for leather britches comes from. i never really got foundered from eating too much, but my dad did one time when he ate 23 tacos and a whole strawberry pie, he broke out in hives and turned green and we had to take him to the hospital. didn't change his love for tacos or strawberry pie.hope you give us another tour of your gardens again soon, would love to see how everything is growing.
Oh my Lord ,when I was little I got foundered on Brussel sprouts and it's funny, now I'm 64 and after that my whole life every time I smell the smell of Brussel sprouts I know I'm fixing to get real sick :( never had it to fail

She's right about brothers and sisters. I'm a recovered addict of 7yrs and my sister is in active addiction and we don't talk. Dad's passed on and momma is on oxygen with copd and emphysema and it's like watching a Beautiful Flower fade away...hard times for us rt now.

Addictions are so difficult. I have a intrathecal Dulaudid pain pump implanted in my lower left abdomen. I needed the pain relief, but hated the medicine. In March I weaned off. Withdrawal is horrible. May God bless you and your Family during this hard, hard time.🙏

Granny is a precious jewel. We need to listen and learn from these wonderful people who lived through some really tough times and persevered through their strengths. They are a treasure. She makes me think of my poor Momma who's been gone these 5 years. I would give everything to be able to hear her voice once more. I just look forward to a day when we will see each other again.

Yes, I got foundered when I was about 11 yrs old on cucumbers fresh from my family garden. I ate so many cucumbers at one time. They were just so good with a little salt and nothing else. I ended up so sick I told my mom I never wanted to even look at another cucumber for as long as I lived. I remember her telling me “that’s what happens when you get foundered on something, ya get sick”. It took many years before I ate another cucumber. When I did start eating cucumbers again as a young adult, I eat them in small amounts with a meal. I’m in my 60’s now, but I always remember when I got foundered on cucumbers. I learned my lesson!!!

When I was 13, I went to a friend’s after church one summer Sunday afternoon. We walked to the grocery store from the apartments she lived in. Her parents had given us some money to go get a snack to share. It seems to me it took us about 25 minutes or so to walk to the store, what with crossing a couple busy streets, and being silly girls yakking the whole way. Once at the grocery store, after much consideration, we decided on a large package of Oreo cookies, the very large family size. Between the two of us, we ate that whole package before we got back to her place. Of course we walked as slow as we could going back. I never ate another Oreo cookie until I was about 35! And I think I have only had one more in the several years since then even. I enjoyed hearing your mom’s story. So nice to see her in a video! So glad to see her out working in the yard alongside you! I enjoyed this video, thank you!

Honestly, you can just toss marigold seed down on the ground and they'll come up and fill in an area nicely. I always plant marigolds and then dry all my seed for the next year. Listening to your mama reminds me of my own Mama and Mamaw's. Daddy and Mama had new potatoes and peas with fresh onions and cornbread just today!!! :-) Daddy loves them... his mama always made her new potatoes with gravy and they ate it over the cornbread. Daddy ALWAYS founders on new potatoes!! But he will lay off them for a few days and then add them to his green beans and then swear he's foundered again. I love hearing the birds in the background, I can hear so many different kinds (and the chickens, too!). What a beautiful mama you have, Tipper! My eldest son Dennis will tell you he TRULY got foundered on fried squash with middlin meat, cornbread and buttermilk. He will eat cornbread with his beans, but he won't touch squash or drink buttermilk at ALL anymore.
Don't have the word Foundered in our language here in Wales, but get the meaning all to well, got "foundered" on strawberries at a farm where you "pick your own" it was a case of one for the basket and one for me, it wasn't a pretty sight later, and to this day still can't eat a strawberry.
I can see how you did that-those fresh strawberries are so good!
Growing up, almost every Thanksgiving I would eat so much I couldn't barely move. But I never got put off to any one particular food then; maybe bcuz of the variety. But I have over-indulged in foods.. Once with stick butter, and the second time with peanut butter fudge balls. I didn't care for the taste of either for about 10 years after each incident. Both of those were about 45 years ago when I was going through puberty.. I❤️Celebrating Appalachia

I got foundered twice that I recall, The first time, my grandfather Ross took us all to the Howard Johnson's for dinner -- a special treat indeed. I ordered the "Captains Platter" seafood entree because I loved seafood and rarely had a chance to eat it. Granddaddy sort of good-humoredly ribbed me about ordering so much food, but it made me determined to eat it all, which I did. I was foundered and worse yet couldn't dare show it. The second time was at the old Guilford Dairy. I got a 50 cent ice cream cone when scoops were a nickel apiece. That time I was so foundered that I lay down on the bench while everybody else tried not to laugh at me. I do believe that there's nothing worse than a "frozen foundering". Thank you for dredging up those memories!
Such a sweet video. I can remember as a boy I was at school and ate potato soap. I felt sick and if I remembered correctly I threw up. Everytime after that when I would think of potato soap I felt sick and had to block it out of my mind haha. I know the feelin!

I'm from Kentucky (Berea) and my family is from a county called Rockcastle and they often say "you're gonna founder yourself" usually when someone goes back for seconds. So yeah, definitely heard this one before.

Hi Tipper, love Granny, my Dad’s side of the family grew up in Appalachia, Wise County, Va. I got foundered on my Grandma’s pinto beans when I was 13 or 14 I loved them and ate till I couldn’t one supper. I got so sick, an couldn’t eat them anymore until I was in my 20’s. Love them now, but know when to quit!

I didn't know that folks also "foundered" , lol. I have a couple of horses that indeed foundered from rich grass, though I don't know if a mule can. I assume that any animal can founder given the right circumstances. I guess I'm grateful to not have "gone off my feed" to never have consumed it again. Bless your Mama, she is a treasure of memories and knowledge. Thank you for sharing her with us.

I’ve heard the term many times growing up but don’t think I’ve ever had too much of a good thing resulting in being foundered😊. Your Mama is a sweetie and so lucky to have such a caring Family. I loved my Mama so very much and miss her so. It’s obvious you cherish every moment spent with her. 🥰

Ohhh, yes. As a child I just loved the fresh cucumbers from my Aunts garden in Tennessee. I foundered myself terribly and during the middle of the night had to sneak in and get the flashlight from her night stand and make my way to the outhouse. I still love cucumbers but don’t eat them like I did back then. Thanks for the great story. 😀

That happened to my husband when he was a little. His mom would tell the story of how they were at his grandma’s. She had some milk gravy on the table. According to his mom, he liked it so much, that his grandma talked him into picking up the bowl and drinking it down. He did, got foundered. It was years later, after he and I got married, that he would be able to eat it again.
Law, taters and peas! I live off of it when they come in! Goes so good with cornbread and Wildfish! Mommy makes the best! She puts cream and a little flour in them to make a gravy. Love this channel. It brings back so many memories of when I was little back on Pap's farm. Those are precious memories. My Granma-in-law got foundered on green beans. She said she had to cook them every day for over 70 years, and that she just got sick of them!!

I got foundered on dill pickles when I was a little girl. I can eat a bite of dill pickles now but not much. We always called it foundered here in eastern KY. Love ur granny.

Here in Nsw Australia, I’ve only heard foundered in regard to horses, but I guessed it’s meaning in regard to people. Give your granny a big hug from me (Susan). I love your videos too and am going to try cornbread soon. I made some years ago when I was cooking for my family, but I’m 66 now and time I tried it again. For some reason here, cornmeal is called Polenta, makes it sound fancy
It is such a blessing that you are willing to share Ganny's wisdom of recollections of times past. I could listen for hours to those tales of such simpler times. Thank you. As a young child I was foundered on fried eggs. I can barely eat fried eggs to this day. Scrambled hard eggs are about the only way I'll eat them. Once again, thank you for sharing.
When I was a kid you could buy Hostess doughnuts in a box. They had the little mini ones in a package, but the box was a regular size doughnut. You could get them covered in powdered sugar or chocolate dipped. My favorite was the chocolate dipped. One evening when mama was visiting her sister 2 doors down, I ate an entire box of 12 in about 30 minutes and was sick as a dog!! I remember my Dad saying "He's foundered". It took about 40 years before I could look at a chocolate covered doughnut without my stomach getting queasy.

Tipper, what a beautiful family you have! And all that beautiful green reminds me that my little patch of 103* weather won’t last forever. Blessings! I’m enjoying learning where the language I use so often came from. I once foundered on pancakes because my father and brother insisted on pancakes every morning, as many as my mom would cook. After one particular food fest on sourdough pancakes, I had hit my limit and I can barely stand pancakes to this day.

I know exactly how she was feeling, been there, done that.(cracklins)Had mules about all my life, and never had one foundered,not saying one couldn't. Granny is so right I only had two brothers and my youngest brother passed away when he was 56. I'm 65 and I think of days gone by and how much we need to spend all the time we can with family and friends I hope you have Granny in your video's more often. "Foundered" was a word used by sailors to describe a ship that is stuck and being battered. "Foundered on the rocks". It is not a good position to be in and means the ship could be lost. The ship is also "seized up" and can't move. Sailors most likely first used this term to describe getting very sick. "Three Sheets (sails) to the wind" is a similar sailor's saying describing a walking drunk leaned to one side like a ship in the wind. Many sayings we have come from sailing and they made it all the way to Appalachia. Many settlers in Appalachia originally came from coastal cultures in Britain. In Appalachia the cuts in the mountains are called "coves" for this reason. "Spinnin' a yarn" comes from the fact that sailors would tell long stories while spinning the yarn that made up the rope. Heard foundered all the time when I was growing up .....I was such a big eater as a child , I loved all food , my mom and dad would tell me, boy you gonna get foundered eating all those beans , or are you foundered yet ....haha....I never did get foundered ...haha.....thanks tipper ....as always ....God bless....🙏
Tipper you’re a great daughter. We all love granny. Time spent together now will be wonderful memories later. I love craklin cornbread with butter milk. It’s a wonderful midnight snack. When I was a little girl, I loved peanuts, and once I remember getting into a jar of peanuts and eating them till I was so sick, I thought I would die, like Granny and the peas and new potatoes. I guess you might say I foundered myself. Well I couldn't stand the thought of peanuts for a long long time. I got over that, but never again did I founder myself on peanuts.

I don't recall that I was ever "foundered" LOL, however, I'm an old lady now so it may be that I just don't remember. This is the first time I've heard the term foundered in terms of feeling sick or sick to your stomach. I have heard it associated with horses. I loved hearing from Granny. Thanks for this video.

I always feel like I missed out in life being any only child raised alone in the country. Both parents worked outside the home so my childhood was spent playing alone. These stories are so interesting.
It’s so important to spend time with our elders lest we lose our history and traditions.
Fresh field corn. I am one of 7 and every summer when the corn would come in, always eat until we were sick on fresh corn, squash, etc. My momma would fuss at us not to eat too much but we were hard headed and wouldn't listen. We never were foundered but it wasn't for lack of trying 😀😀😀
Heard the word "foundered" quite a bit from my mamaw. She was from Eastern Kentucky. Usually just referred to eating until you felt like you would bust, which happened to me quite often at her house. Your momma reminds me so much of both my mamaw and my granny. They lived to 95 and 102, respectively, and I have so many good memories of their stories, and the stories of all their siblings. Both were the last survivors of their generation, and I was so blessed to have them for so much of my life. Watching your videos, and especially those with your momma, always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for all of them.

Green beans, arsh potatoes and ham was a one pot meal I looked forward to as a child. My granny would dice onion and add a bit of vinegar and water to eat on top of the beans. It was so good I'm surprised I never got "foundered"! I did have a "come to Jesus" call on chocolate covered peanuts or Goobers. I remember the worst stomach pain of my life after eating them. I had never heard the term "foundered" before but I'm sure that would have been the perfect description.
This is one of your best videos. I have always enjoyed listening to the older folks talk about when they were young. For me, it's like I can close my mind's eye and see them as they were back then... Just today I was telling my 41 year old son about how me and my cousins use to swing from the grape vines in the holler out back of Ma & Pa's house ... Good memories.

When I was very little my dad would sing to me " Mammy's little baby loves shortenin', shortenin' mammy's little baby loves shortenin' bread. Took it to the doctor and the doctor said that little baby got foundered on shortenin' bread". Loved the video.

Awww i love this! I could listen to old stories all day everyday. Unfortunately i dont have any elders in my own life to listen to so this is such a blessing to watch and have! Everyone should be recording their elders stories. I get panic attacks when i think about all the amazing stories that have died along with the people who lived them. I wish id been able to spend more time with my great grandparents so i could ask them about their lives. They passed before i was 10 and before i learned to truly appreciate their history

When I was in third grade the lunch lady put stewed tomatoes in bowls on the lunchroom tables. Of course, it was a rare child that liked stewed tomatoes. I was one, and apparently a little girl at the same table. We started eating them & trying to outdo one another as the other kids "ewwwed" at us. The lunch lady was overjoyed that two kids were actually devouring her tomatoes so she kept on filling up the bowl. Well after that day, I guess it was 35 years or more before I could eat a stewed tomato again. I love 'em now but couldn't hardly look at one for years after that.

I've heard that about mules as well. I once came down with stomach flu after eating a night-time snack of fried bologna. It took me about ten years to become friends with bologna again. I often become "foundered" after Thanksgiving dinner.

My Father in law was a garden fanatic who had gardens in 3 different spots. He could grow some of the most beautiful vegetables you could find anywhere.
Found it. I got foundered on green beans and cottage cheese and still can’t even smell cottage cheese without getting nauseous. My Granny would also say, “that was awful good” whatever she was eating that she liked or was being polite. Just love what you and your family do for all of us. Thanks you

In 74 and live in Kentucky. I remember eating the thing's she's talking about . Precious memories. I got founded on sweet potato pie with white syrup on it. Sick as a dog. I didn't eat it again until I was grown. My Mammy Belcher let me eat 7 pieces .

I've heard foundered all my life. My granmaw used to caution us about eating so much we'd founder. Well, I got a hankering last week for some "death by chocolate" ice cream. My hubby brought home a big 48 oz tub of it. I offered him some and he said he didn't want any. So I ate the whole thing by myself. I foundered myself and was sick all night long. I didn't throw up but would probably have felt better if I had. I haven't wanted chocolate since. I hope this isn't a life time thing cause I really like chocolate. lol Much Love

The Thanksgivings of my youth; a hotdish with green peppers about killed me when I was 10 (love green peppers now); Chinese food in Fargo, ND circa 1985 (may have been some reaction to MSG and took me years to eat Chinese again).
