Cheeky one-step penalty in final moments of Croatian football match

- There was an audacious penalty kick in the 95th minute of a game in Croatia, as NK Croatia Zmijavci's Tomislav Mrkonjić took just one step back before firing the ball past the Cibilia keeper. In the build-up Mrkonjić was seen tying his laces and adjusting his socks before suddenly springing into action. The game, which finished 1-1, was being played in the Druga HNL, the second division of Croatian football, and evoked memories of the famous Lee Trundle sneak penalty.

There was a lot going on. The clean challenge penalised. The unexpected shot. But the highlight was at 0:09 when that guy pushed the ref, got carded, and then hurled himself on the ground like a toddler in a supermarket.
And it was only a second yellow it seems. Definitely a straight red for making that much contact with the ref that deliberately.
Man was very lucky not to get insta-sent for that tbf

Tackle wasn't even in the box. And yes he won the ball, he got there first, no other outcome than winning the ball, if anything the other player tumbles because he tumples over his body
The striker lifts his arm, actually wanted a corner kick and did not expect the penalty.

That’s never a penalty, we all criticise VAR but seeing the trajectory of the ball he’s won it fairly there.
VAR is not the problem, its the people operating it.

I did that one time in high school, ref blew the whistle so I shot really quickly flat footed, ball went in the net, goalie didn’t even move. . Ref made me kick again and he said “Na you can’t do that”, 2nd attempt end up skimming the post and missing. I was gutted 😂😭

About 40 years ago there was a player in German Bundesliga making many penalty goals with this "kick out of the stand": his name was Nickel.

Some tackles are iffy but this one was clearly 100% ball. It was a risky tackle because if he gets the player at all before getting ball it’s a definite PK. But he didn’t. And it was very obvious

Looks like that was what he planned, but the referee was to slow so he had to adjust his socks too.

Step 1: Push the ref.
Step 2: Get a yellow.
Step 3: Be completely bewildered and surprised as to how you got a yellow.
Clean challenge, you could see that even the striker knew it.
It’s hard to tell from this angle.But it seems possible the defender could’ve hit the attackers foot.

Because some say penalty others say no penalty.
The camera is too far and the angle of the camera isn't great to see whether or not he touched the ball first, or the player first.
Some are saying, look where the ball went. He could have gone through the attacker, then he got the ball.
One thing I look for when a penalty is given in these circumstances. The person who made the tackle, reaction. How I saw his reaction, TO ME, means that he thought he gave away the penalty
If you watch it in 0.25 speed it could very possibly be a penalty

@@lem1kss At first I thought it wasn’t a Pk but after looking at it another time you see that the player in white quickly kicks the ball away knowing that the defender is going to make that challenge. The defender almost got the ball but the player in white was cheeky. That’s why the defender didn’t argue with the referee.

@@jx_szn slowed down id clearer but it's still really difficult to see. I'm still going no pen, direction and speed of the ball indicate the defender made contact with it.

If it was never a penalty, the kick is therefore illegal.

Even if the sliding is perfect and you touch the ball first, its still consider "excesive use of force"

That ref deserves a job in the EPL for that call. He can even refuse to view the challenge on the monitor and let it stand despite VAR, just like the current lot.
Or better still, have VAR decide to overturn the decision but tell the referee to carry on anyway.

Referee was closer to the player taking the penalty. Regarding speed of sound the penalty taker had mille seconds extra to react which the GK hadn't.

For all the people claiming this is not a penalty, watch it in 0.25 speed. The attacking player knocks the ball towards the byline before the challenge comes in and this is what redirects the ball, not the tackle. The defending player does not make any contact with the ball and takes out the attacker.
Yeah, the winger gets a touch before the tackle. However, the first contact of the tackle occurs outside the box which wouldn't warrant a penalty. And the defender gets some of the ball even if it's a late tackle. Horrible refereeing.

I don't know, some places do reset the clock after half time. Not sure about Croatia, but in Japan the scoreboard (on tv anyways) always writes 1st half (lit. front half) and 2nd half (lit. back half) and the time runs from 0-45. Not sure if that's the case here, but it could be a possibility.

It was a clear penalty. You may never go for ball through the opponent's legs (moving trajectory). Even if you touch ball first.

Player looked at ref to try to hurry the whistle. Ref looked away so he could watch the feet of the goalkeeper to make sure he doesn't jump off the line before it's kicked.

My team would look to do this on direct free kicks whenever the opposing team didn't ask for a wall. Step one on the defensive side is to immediately stand over the ball so the team with the kick does not take a quick one.

1. The defender clearly got the ball, a fair challenge and a clean one indeed.
2. The guy (jersey no.4) who bumped against the ref did a stupid move.
3. The penalty kick was fair, the ref already blew the whistle so he could take the kick anytime he wanted to after the whistle was blown.
That penalty wasn't deserved. If he could get back up that quickly he's perfectly fine. Wtg
