Battery is still a great concern not only for phone also for laptops...
I wanna see more Asus Zenfones being reviewed.
Nice review. I was looking forward to this phone all year. I'm mostly interested in Daydream but AR seems like it could get more useful as more development happens. Good to know the camera is capable as well.
Why treat us just as consumers and only mentioning AR? Cameras in phones are so popular for the creative capabilities they offer. So, I'm more interested in the professional and creative capabilities of what these sensors can do. Can it scan 3D objects? Can it record depth video? Can it track the path of the camera in video recording? These could really make it worth the price.
Simon Thester, you may be interested, but at the end of the day this is still a phone that doesn't appeal to the majority of consumers. Its may need to be refined a little bit more before people start to get more interested.
I want to scan with this phone!!!! Does it scan or does it not?!
nice video, good review!
nice review thank you
love her!
Interesting phone. It could be interesting for interior designers depending on the amount of support.
Comparing the new tech in Tango to the outdated SLAM style CV tracking in ARKit is like comparing Phone 3DOF VR to PC 6DOF VR with hand controllers. Worlds apart.
The fail cases for the Apple approach are much higher. They demo well but are much less practical.
So few phones support Android 7.1. I wonder if the changes they made to it were small enough that most manufacturers just chose to ignore it.
Those bezzels
I wanna buy this phone, not cause of the AR or VR it's because i've been waiting for it to be released for 5 months lol
and i'm a fan of Asus so....yea
This is a fine review. Nothing she's saying here is wrong. Not sure why there's so much hate. Yea the verge shills sometimes like the essential review xD but this is not one of those times.
Deleted well she did neglect to mention the Snapdragon 821 isn't stock; it's been optimized for the AR application.
Also, there's a lack of imagination or technical knowledge when coming to a conclusion about AR. She didn't discuss the actual technical quality of the AR, just the current state of the app market. Similarly, assuming that ARKit can compete with Tango is like assuming Google Cardboard can compete with an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.
Basically, she shortchanged the most novel and relevant aspect of the phone for all the wrong reasons.
Deleted They didn't shill for the essential phone. The guy said it has a shitty camera, and it does.
Deleted she did get one thing wrong. She mentioned Apple's ARkit is coming to regular iPhones, which is great and all. However comparing an iPhone 7 running with ARKit and then saying that it's going to be the same as Tango, is dead wrong without the hardware. Think about it logically, how can you get the same degree of accuracy or experience with Apple's ARKit, especially since an iPhone 7 only has one camera and that is it. So it's impossible to get the same AR experience from an iPhone 7 without an IR camera, or depth sensing camera. Remember there is 3 different cameras on the Asus Zenfone AR, just like there is 3 cameras on the Lenovo phab 2 pro. The IR and depth sensing cameras work in all kinds of lighting. The iPhone 7 does not. Even Apple's own ARkit SDK talks about this, and it even mentions that it uses estimations for distances. Tango does not. But this is where Lauren is showing the world her lack of technical knowledge, and her love of iPhone.
Couldn't just clear the notifications for the thumbnail no?
I like the fact that Google's pushing this tech with other manufacturers, but I hate ASUS's software, the version of Android they push out is so clunky and looks extremely outdated.
That’s a phone for a few people. =D
looks like a great looking phone if you dont look at the back(ugly) but the price can be a killer
I wish they reviewed the midrange Zenfone 3. I would like to hear what the West think about an Asian phone.
ABOOOOOOOUT~
Very detailed and technical analysis. ARKit significantly changes the game as it matches the performance of tango without the dedicated hardware
she nailed a lot of things, but marveling at the headphone jack is quite wrong :/ Tango isn't that popular. AR-wise, ARKit by Apple already claimed the spotlight, VR-wise, there's Daydream so I would personally think Tango is currently pointless.
era exatamente o que pretendia fazer, comprar pq é um smart excelente e nao por causa do VR. Nem chegará ao BR.

Sword Art Online AR becoming reality soon😀
You are so beautiful...hahaha
This phone is horrible. Out of all things to copy, they copy Touchwiz?
Since when is Minaj at The Verge?
I hope to see many more devices with Google's Tango technology. Google Tango is years ahead and far superior to Apple's ARKit.
making dedicated hardware for tango is the reason why there is only about 2 phone in the world with support for tango.
Where as Apple's ARkit is already in millions and millions of phones with as good if not better than Tango without any special hardware needed. So which do you think is better?
Yunik Maharjan the reason why Google Tango is much better is because of its accuracy with the use of so many different sensors. Because the iPhone does not have those wealth of sensors yet arkit will not have the same accurate real world measurements that Google Tango does. Though I must give props to Apple for making AR available to more people.
Stranger Happened have a great processor is One thing, but in order to get great AR you also need great cameras and sensors. Having only one camera on a phone will never give you a great AR or accurate experience without the extra hardware. That is a fact. Especially if you read Apple's ARkit SDK docs, and how it is working, and the limitations. ARkit has a lot of limitations with lighting and measurements, where as those limitations are not there with Tango, because of the extra sensors.
You have to understand the technical limitations of systems like Google's ARCore and Apples ARKit. Frameworks like these have been around for many years and they have no understanding of space and the environment around them. Google's Tango technology does. Apple has nothing comparable to Tango.
Computerphile explains this very well in their Google Tango video.
I see a few people mentioning processors. A processor will only be as good as the information it receives. More sensors will always be better if implemented correctly. I am yet to see what the ARkit is capable of, but something tells me it won't be as good as Tango due to the limit of information it receives. But it will be good enough for the average person's usage though, like snapchat etc. Although I would be impressed if it's capable of me moving around in the building/room and it remembers where I left an item like tango does.
using monocular visual odometry with the ipotato is a joke in comparison with the robustness and accuracy of these sensors...... . but don't worry every phone will soon be this capable including the ipotato
Nougat is pronounced "noo-ga" not "nyewgart"! Honestly, you Americans haven't a clue.
The problem: Android.
Actual video starts at 2:30

fawad mirza that sounds like a personal problem. no one told you to watch this video
Wow, with Tango, inside out positional tracking for VR should be amazing and NOPE: Daydream covers the Tango sensors!!!
AR in a VR headset would require two camera's at roughly human eye length apart to get that stereoscopic 3D effect (what VR is really for), so unless you really desire a 360° 2D AR window on your face, this isn't an issue; the hardware isn't here anyways.
