This is gonna be a hell of a discography for you to look through
Yea if he loved this one he’s in for a ride
Good lord rtj 2 is gonna go insane
can't wait till the rest
Pledge allegiance to the grind 2 is a modern classic
El-P and Killer Mike had both been making music for 15 years before they met. The story was that they were introduced by one of the guys at Adult Swim and hit it off instantly. El-P produced Killer Mike's album "Rap Music" and they had so much fun they released RTJ as just a side mixtape not expecting anything but it blew up bigger than anything they had done prior.
It's so cool when these random meetings and side projects blow up into something big.
Him loving the beats so much on this album makes me really excited to eventually get to tracks like Call Ticketron and Out of Sight
Bruhhhh sameeeeee hahaha
Hello Bob!! Super pumped you are covering these guys. EL-P is one of my favorite artists in hip-hop and Killer Mike is an absolute monster with his flow. Before Run the Jewels became a thing I had only heard him from a couple features. One being his feature on Outkast's album Stankonia, and the other being on one of El-P's albums. So when EL-P announced he was producing an entire album for Killer Mike (R.A.P. Music, which is great! Don't sleep on that one!) I was pretty surprised! . Even more surprised when they became a duo. But it has been a ride, the Run the Jewels records just get more hard hitting and more slick as they go.. and they are great live!!
EL-P is such an influential individual in the underground hip hop scene... but also influential for me personally. His style of futuristic/industrial/noisy production was one of the major reasons I began to fall in love with hip-hop music back in the day (I mainly listened to Metal and rock music beforehand). If you go back in time and start checking out some of the projects EL-P was involved with in the late 90's and early 2000's you'll discover that his output, and the quality of it, is absolutely insane. El-P's label Definitive Jux was very important in the ongoing development of underground/alternative hip hop music, just tons of forward thinking, creative material coming out of that label.
It's all really worth your time! I know you got tons on your plate and many many records to listen to before you check these out.. but if you are in the mood to listen to some classic experimental/alternative records in hip hop (stuff like Madvilliany, Atrocity Exhibition, etc.) Then I recommend starting with Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein, Mr. Lif - I Phantom, Aesop Rock - Labor Days and EL-P - Fantastic Damage. These are all well loved with underground hip-hop heads for good reason.
Anyways much love and respect from middle of nowhere Kentucky, I really appreciate your style of reaction videos, keep on keeping it real!
How not to mention EL p's first project "Company flow"? A definitive turning point for the hip hop music back in the 1997
@@sonoro2 I love Funcrusher Plus by Company Flow! One of my top 50 favorite records actually, I've bumped that CD so many times haha. I just think the other ones I recommended may be a bit more approachable/immediate.
If you love the production on this then youll love everything el p touches. Hes the king of these synthetic and kinda growly beats imo.
R.A.P. Music by killer mike (the other member of rtj) also has el p production and is his best imo.
Run the jewels is so fucking good. All albums are incredible. Run The Jewels 3 and 4 are my favorites
I'm glad you're finally getting into them. I feel like they've been putting out some of the most unique and interesting hip hop of the past decade. Every one of their albums slaps. And personally, I think El-P is one of the most underrated producers ever. And he's a fantastic lyricist too. His solo discog is also very good and I highly recommend you listen to it too.
El p has definitely put out some of the most important records ever. The cold vein alone would make a career but he has rtj, his solo stuff, company flow and even more. Definitely one of the goats, he’s up there w q tip for me
@@gruntilda2 That company flow funcrusher plus album is probably my favorite thing he has done. Just crazy that he was producing like that in 97. El-P is really goated
@@fernandoreyes680 That album is absolutely insane and I agree it’s still at least top 3 in his projects for me
Listening to these albums almost feels like listening to a rock album at times. El-P and Killer Mike are both great at their lyricals/flow, but the beats really push it over the top for me. Just so damned cool, makes me feel like I'm rockin' out 🤘
No cap, I was literally listening to RTJ1 as I saw this on my feed and I had no idea you were reviewing them! It was so random that I was even listening to them. I was listening to a song by Big Boi feat. Killer Mike called Thom Pettie (a nod to Tom Petty) and I was like ohh shit Mike is spitting fire, I'm in the mood for some RTJ now, so I started a playlist of all 4 albums, and been listening to the 1st one first. So crazy and cool that you're reviewing it!
lol, that's funny
Killer mike has long been associated with OutKast, they’re both from Atlanta and use to collab a lot
Purple Ribbon All Stars is the project name. Claire Mont Lounge favorite track on the album
No apology necessary for your thoughts and feelings surrounding the shooting brother. That was as real as it gets!
Man what a fun 4 album run this is going to be. Theyre GREAT live as well!
Oh, I bet
Anyone else here think Bob should give Company Flow a try?
I've already suggested twice. Now he knows EL P, so the timing is right
You're going to have a blast with the intensity of the RTJ albums. High energy and bars on bars.
I feel like Run the Jewels would tap into a lot of rock fans. They have a bombastic in your face type style
Also killer Mike is part of dungeon family which is what OutKast called their basement studio, the dungeon haha
Side note. Future also a Dungeon Family Affiliate
@@dannylipscomb7838yep, cee lo green as well haha
“…….Now That I Soured The Mood!”
😂😂😂😂
I totally agree with you though. Some bullshit to not be “the good guy with a gun” when that is your duty to your community.
Also cant wait for a Mos Def reaction
11:57 Jumping the broom is an African American tradition done during the wedding ceremony, dates back to slavery times.
Very excited for you to finally dive into their stuff. The way they hand off their verses as rapid and fluid, but also intelligibly is incredible. They both have such unique voices and flows and super impactful lyrics, especially on RTJ2 and 3. Can't wait for you to listen to the rest of their stuff!
RTJ4 is easily their most politcially charged album imo.
I'm really looking forward to 3&4, especially after they seem to improve from 1 going into 2.
It would be so sick if he checked out any of El-ps solo projects. He would love them, especially the cohesive overarching stories they have
All 4 RTJ albums are fantastic in their own ways. So glad you're finally listening to them!
5, don't forget Meow the Jewels!!!
Very excited youre starting their discography. IMO, their third album is where they perfected their sound & dynamic as a Duo.
I think they've been super consistent. 2 and 4 are my favorites though
i gotta disagree slightly...RTJ 2 is still their peak.
@@kentekuzan I won't argue there...all their stuff has been great.
Can't wait for you to react to RTJ2, think it's their best work.
you HAVE to listen to clipping.'s "there existed an addiction to blood" and "visions of bodies being burned" those albums are tailor-made for you from the production to the flows to the stories and ongoing themes. maybe for a Halloween special? 🤔
That's fairly high on my list 👍
I told you lately that I was waiting your reaction on « A Christmas Fuckin Miracle ». This track is amazing, one of my favorite songs ever.
This man needs to listen to Cage the Elephant
Run the jewels 2 is my favorite album of theirs easily haha and yes part of the appeal is it seems so effortless for them haha such a refined swagger with car crashing into the barricade beats
Sea legs is great, and get it is definitely my favorite and a taste of rtj 2 cause the beats are crazy and Zach de la roach is on rtj 2
On the Banana Clipper track you need to have seen the movie Baby Boy in order to understand some of Killer Mikes verse.
I'm excited for this one
DMT is the drug you're thinking of Bob
Hell yeah run the jewels
Mark Grondin of Spectrum Pulse on RTJ1:
"It was one that screamed for all comers in its naked disrespect for the thrones, and yet they saw none dare approach. Telling."
Yesssssssss… this series will be right up your alley
What a great fucking surprise i love them
OH MY GOD I was just going thru RTJ’s discography wondering if bob would ever react. LETS GOOOO
You should check out Killer Mike’s solo album before this, RAP Music. It’s just him rapping for the most part but El P produced it and pushed them to make RTJ. It’s basically RTJ 0
Wasn't expecting this one to drop on the channel, but am very glad it did 🤘
love you bob
you make me feel better/comfortable about being emotionally vulnerable
bless u buddy
Oh fuck can’t wait to see your thoughts on these guys
Killer Mike's "R.A.P. Music", entirely produced by El-P (essentially their first collaboration before Run The Jewels was properly formed) is a legitimate masterpiece.
Yup, gotta check that one out for sure
Open mike eagle has a great podcast called WhatHadHappenedWas where he interviews an artist for an entire season and he and el have an episode on this record and how it came to be(& every other record). You should check it out. They even touch on that absurd prince Paul feature lol
Oh and don't sleep on el p either he's a pretty complex lyricist
Some of EL-P's best production can be found on the Cannibal Ox - "The Cold Vein" album. Worth a review.
So very excited! I think you'll love the progression from this first album all the way to the fourth. Nothing but great music from Killer Mike and El-P.
glad you liked that christmas miracle track
you may be interested to know Killer Mike was fairly involved with Bernie's 2020 campaign so the "have and have nots" notion is indeed quite strong
the person behind Adult Swim on Cartoon Network introduced them to each other for a project back in 2010 or so(give or take a year or two either way), this entire album was a flex on the industry really.
youre gonna love the evolution of sound and chemistry in this discography
Hell yes! 2 back to back RTJ reviews on the same day?? Time to take a break from work for this! Thank you! 🙏
Outkast ATLiens needs to be heard!
I NEVER KNEW HOW MUCH I NEEDED THIS REACTION FROM YOU
Bob mixing up Earl with Killer mike lmfao
This is an underground masterpiece, so cool you did this!
El-P most under rated producer in hip-hop.
You gotta check El-P’s solo albums
I’ll sleep when you’re dead
Fantastic damage
Cancer 4 cure
Most slept on artist in hip hop
Absolutely, as well as Cannibal Ox and Funcrusher Plus
E-Lp is the man
Dudes production is insanely good
Guy is a master wizard
Not only for RTJ
A Christmas fucking miracle was one of my favourite tracks in 2019 specifically the last quarter
Used to play it alot
Especially when killer Mike comes in jesus-(in terms of sound not necessarily lyricism)
Really gave me positive emotions in a very tough time for me
I' m stoked to see you doing RTJ I think you're really going to dig it. Both El-P and Killer Mike are some of the best in the game. El-P's production is second to none and Killer mike is second to none when it comes to flow and his voice just cuts through the frequencies and come out clear. Funny they have both been around for 20 + years and when they hooked up with each other the chemistry was just perfect. I could go on forever but think I'll just watch and listen.
Hell yeah, RTJ reaction is here! Love how you mentioned the rhyme schemes, when El-P and Killer Mike rap it feels like you're listening to an encrypted message or some shit lmao
I just listened to RTJ 1 and 2 the other day and I cant believe I waited so long to listen it's so so good
I suspect these guys will be right up your alley
You're right about Mike..his enunciation is immaculate!!
OMG YESSSS. Letttts gooooo! These are all gonna be amazing! please do them all!
You need to do "Funcrusher Plus" and "R.A.P Music" also.
The cold vein!
@@stuartmccormick3977 I agree. Might be El's best produced project.
@@alteredhiphop7332 Man, the def jux and rhyme sayers era was the best...
@@stuartmccormick3977 For sure. Don't forget Rawkus, even though the company might have been shady, they put out a lot of classics.
@@alteredhiphop7332 Absolutely!
The TLDR of RTJ in it's entirety...
"I'm gonna heart that, might be my most favorite one"
ooh man I'm so hype for you to experience RTJ
👉🏾💎🤛🏾
It's good to see you enjoy bars and beat.
400 Degreez Juvenile, I think essential to Southern Rap
Because of their size their walk seems heavier and smoother. They look wise and they are
OH DEAR WHAT THE FUCK HAVE WE HERE
UUUH Exited to watch this one! Love RTJ so so much
Rtj are so good, I think you’ll really resonate with their message
The lyrics are in the tradition of old school hip hop in that it's an album of overstated braggadocio. The albums become more lyrical as they go. Conscious and political.
Not every album needs to be extremely meaningful to be extremely good.
However, I think this album is very meaningful when contextualizing it. Two rappers in their 40s, becoming BFFs, taking their careers back from obscurity.
You are setting off on a glorious musical journey.
Also, respect for putting Bethesda on notice, haha.
Great analysis/reaction as always, Now that you got into RTJ Please React to
R. A. P music by killer Mike and Cancer 4 Cure by EL P.
Btw I think C4C is one of the best albums ever!
The addition of electric guitar to his instrumentals is monumental!
These guys have run my gym playlist since 2013
Bob we need more Travis reactions! Birds in the trap‼️
has anyone suggested listening to city morgue? would be interesting to see you react to them
SUCH A WELCOME SURPRISE
Been looking forward to this one
These sci-fi sounds are pure fire ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
It’s fun to see Bob geek out here
This is going to be your fucking jam, i already know it. This sound is in your happy zone.
Your reactions get more and more exciting with each new artist you react to. Love that you enjoyed Big Boi's verse. You should add Outcast - Aquemini to your list; incredible album! Loving the RTJ reactions, keep em coming. You're in for one hell of a ride!
While you're on Aquemini, you'll notice a lot of influences that went into Kendrick's Good Kid Mad City in there, it's thrilling.
I'm gonna work through Outkast's stuff in order 🤘
I’ve been waiting for this since you announced it. ReactTheJewels
Legendary album / group imo
Just for context: reverb is what makes things sound like they're in a huge empty hall. I think what you're trying to describe is the really heavy synthetic bass, which could come across as distorted if it's heavy enough
Not trying to sound like a snob lol just hoping to help expand your musical vocabulary. Great vid as always! I think you'll enjoy RTJ2 even more!
synthetic basses can be distorted too tho. and reverb doesn't always make stuff sound heavier. it makes it sound bigger i guess, or further away. which can help with heaviness. but there has to be some heaviness in the sound the reverb is being applied to in the first place.
You'd think I'd take the time to just look it up, but I never do 😂
15:10 I think it's like a great drummer. Excellent accents, great rhythm, snappy breaks.
LETS GO I BEEN THINKING ABOUT COMMENTING THIS
To break the cycle of violence we need distance and therapy
Can’t wait for run the jewels 2!!
Run the Jewels 2 is my favorite album ever, would love to have a chat with you about it after youve listened
Wasn’t expecting this one!!
Ohh you're gonna love RTJ
EL-P has an album called I'll Sleep When You're Dead. You should check it out
You should watch the movie "Enter the Void", it's shot in first person and it is about that drug you were talking about. Crazy movie, I think you would like the experience.
this album is PHENOMENAL
Should react to Killer Mike's album R.A.P Music, it's amazing imo!!
Never heard of this album ever but I am still hopeful UGK will eventuqlly have their day
UGK is street classic 👌🏽
I feel like when you’re rating an album u shouldn’t necessarily feel like it checks certain boxes. Instead just absorb it as a whole and see how u feel about it in general regardless of it’s elements.
Bob definitely “BASED AF”
Hell yea! 🔥
I'm confused, did you ever react to Atrocity Exhibition in the end? Is it just a patreon exclusive or smth? I remember you being super hyped to react to it
YOO, one of my favorite acts ever!
I’m super curious to hear what you’d think of Griselda, I hope you check ‘em out sometime
