hello sensei Matt
If it’s not too intrusive and you don’t mind me asking how much was that Kane Masters or Kane that you demonstrated in this video I know they’re more expensive than your usual every run of the mill Kane and I was interested in perhaps ordering one of their products just curious to know
Beware the man who walks with a cane but no limp.
I've been practicing martial arts for many years. What Matt demonstrates looks ground level and basic but VERRRY EFECTIVE. Starting with just practicing 10 minutes every day and in a couple of weeks... I wouldn't want to attack you. Work up to 15-20 minutes each day, you'll have a great workout... even for us elderly (I'll be 70 years of age this year 😴). Thanks, Matt, for sharing all of that with us...
Thanks Howie! That’s a great compliment!
I studied JuJitsu for 25 years and part of the training required that we choose a weapon to develop proficiency. Most of my buddies picked exotic weapons that couldn't be carried outside the Dojo (tonfu, katana, nunchucks). I chose the simple--and legal--wooden cane. And I still train with one.
Now, at 75, I'm glad I made the right choice.
I think of the cane as mainly a blocking tool: holding the cane in the middle with my two hands about two feet apart, I know I can block punches and kicks with bone shattering effect. Secondly, I look at the cane as a choking tool. Thirdly, as a striking tool.
And one day soon, I guess, it will be a walking-tool. (:-)
Awesome post! I’m so glad you chose the cane too! Thank you!
Where can I purchase one of these ?
lol at end of your Tex but thanks for sharing your thoughts as Matt has been showing me what you have mentioned tc
You sound to positive to end up needing the cane to walk with, I like your summery of the use of it
I have a background in Aikido but as I age, I have gotten fearful because some of my disabilities connected to my military experience have gotten worse and I worry about being vulnerable to a growing crime problem. Here, in East Tennessee, I’m not greatly concerned because I’m usually armed with a firearm. But what about visiting my granddaughter in NY? Now with this seminar series I’m beginning to feel more empowered and confident! Thank you so much! This former Infantry Captain feels dangerous again….
You dont know me mate but i wish to thank and salute you for your service to your country
The gent is savage, comical, entertaining and educating, all at the same time.
I have bad arthritis in my hands from 43 years of concrete work and can’t imagine having to hit someone with them “In self defense “ it will still hurt to hold on to a cane but I can now at least defend my wife, daughter and myself
Thank you
👌After 40+ years in the martial arts and achieving 3 black belts in karate, kobudo and cane I have to say this is the best presentation of the cane I have ever seen. Simple, straightforward and very effective. At 72 I don't teach much these days but now I have seen something I can happily recommend to enquirers about cane fighting. Well done Mr Pasquinilli.
Thank you Phil! That’s a great endorsement. Greatly appreciated.
Where can I buy that cane
"get down and dirty, take his eyes out of his head..... For self defence!!" Love it!
Hahaha. Thanks!!
Good video.
Lifelong martial artist. When I was hobbled by an ankle sprain I used a walking stick in NYC. Very effective defensive weapon.
After you step in with your right foot around minute 8, if you turn your body counterclockwise and swing your left foot back, you will probably put your adversary on the deck.
Matt love your videos ! Most raging thugs usually attack with left and right hooks, I stopped a thug from attacking me with a metal bar from a fire triangle when I was in the army, circa 1965, I was in a small room with. A Dutch door ( medical records room) the thug threatened me and open the lower half of the door, l hit him in the forward tibia with the metal bar and gopher screamed and fell down the stairwell , he told the sarge I was trying to kill him, after that he avoided me for the rest of his tour, I am now 75 yo and carry a oak cane for mobility and self defense, even though I have martial arts training, I love a good stick , most thugs see it and give me a wide berth!
A vulnerable point you did not mention is the nerve plexus at the top of the shoulder by the neck. A hard blow there is likely to paralyze the arm on that side. As a retired surgical technologist with 45 years in operating rooms, I know what hurts, I know what breaks, I know what kills. Your presentation is excellent.
I am 80 years old and and I do use a cane for balance lately as I am on heavy meds for cancer treatment
I like the looks of the one in this video .
We are living in a dangerious world now and I have learned a lot from your videos already .And if not to high a dollar would consider purchasesing a cane like the one shown in this video
That tennis swing is exactly how they showed us to use a straight baton at the Chicago Police Academy 30 years ago.
Matt’s biology class ! I love it , only for self defense mind you
I never thought about wrapping my handle with Paracord. I might do that. I love my cane masters, I've had it for years. It's been thru multiple airports, never any issue. I love that you are actually teaching good useful info.
Honestly, the paracord moves too much for my liking. I could do without it. Thanks!
Square leather cord tightly wrapped would probably grip better to the cane.
I wouldn't do that personally. It would act as a stop as you move between grips.
Matt, I always learn something from your presentations. Very informative. Thank you very much.
Hi Matt! I'm a Pittsburgher, retired teacher, living here in Thailand for 20+ years. I'm 66, and not as active as I used to be. I have made several walking canes from a wood used here as pick/hoe handles, the Thai name escapes me at the moment. It is VERY dense and strong...a bit heavy but I'll accept weight for strength any day. Honestly, I'd like to lighten it a bit, just to increase the swing-speed, but without a lathe I don't want to do hours of planing/scraping/sanding. I just wanted to say hi, just found your channel and subbed today; maybe next time, if possible, I'll post a link to some photos. ☮
In the UK I would be concerned about using a cane that has obvious angular edges designed to maximise injury. If an attacker is injured or killed, then it might be difficult to convince a court jury that the cane wasn't being carried as a defensive weapon, or worse an offensive weapon. Personally, I think that a completely unmodified crook handle cane (basic walking stick in the UK) would be the only type to carry to stand a chance of not being charged with carrying or using an offensive weapon. I think carrying a cane is a great idea though (as long as an attacker doesn't grab the cane off you and give a worst beating than if there were no cane).
You are probably right. Sad but true. The criminals have more rights than the law abiding citizens.
I'm so reminded of how proud and glad I am to be a Citizen of the United States of America!
The thrust is a good technique but it has one fallacy it can be seen and defended against. My best technique due to my height is the ball buster which immediately drops any person that wants to attack me. Thrusting is great if your attacker is the same height as you are but for us shorter guys we just don't have the reach for attacks above the chest.
Good point and technique!
Thank you Sir for another great video, I've learned alot from you, please keep this great material coming...Thank you.
Thanks for the video with all the info .
Thanks for the video!
I've been playing with an idea. If I can figure out how to record, I'll try to show it to you.
Thursday was a rough day, but I walked and did the swinging clubs on Wednesday. I had a little problem with my swinging clubs and tried to modify something. I think it worked well enough so far. Your videos have gotten me started with swinging club and bo workouts. I never thought I could do anything worthwhile with anything like that because I could never get fancy. Learning that just a few simple spins can give me a bit of muscle tone is good for me. I get soreness in my left wrist from lack of strength and flexibility, but I recover. I think both the strength and flexibility there are improving. I'm not pushing the right shoulder, but I'm hoping to slowly reduce a bit of the arthritis in the right shoulder.
This is awesome love how you teach not to hold back and inflict maximum damage stop a threat permanently!
Thanks for the great info!! That’s really funny when you say, “the ribs, not much meat there”, then you laugh!
Thanks Matt for sharing another great video
When walking alone on a wooded path, I have a drill I use. As I see leaves on trees and bushes along the trail, I try to thrust them with my cane or walking stick. No real power, just a speed and accuracy drill to work on reaction time. Thanks for your video !
Excellent description of body mechanics with the use of the body as the fulcrum. Mix this with the surprise that and old guy/gal is doing this and we gain the advantage quickly
Thanks Rat Lips!
I have one of these canes in hickory. One of my most prized possessions.
A prize indeed!
good stuff, thanks
Love your stuff! Very practical...effective stick work! I don't have a cane, but a hardwood walking stick so most of your techniques still apply!
Yes they will. Walking stick self defense is what is shown on the CZcams channel, "The Modern Defender."
thanks Matt
Great video thanks for the info.🇬🇧
Compared to other cane demonstrations on other channels, this one is excellent and effective.
If you can’t fight without a cane,
you can’t fight with one.
Maybe
The shins are very sensitive and hard to protect.
Really thank you, Sr.
Again Thank You So Much.
Despite my years of Martial Art experience, I've decided to simply
stick to 'Mase!' With my quickness, and technique, I can Spray my
attacker in a heartbeat! I'll just keep my 'Can AT THE READY at all
Times!
That’s good too!
Just watch the wind and others around. Always have another option tho. My favorite is a closed expansible baton. (Monadnock)
With mace or bear spray, people do not consider windage, and this can be a fatal mistake@@RedDragonProtection
Superb coaching skills!!
Well done sir
Always ❤️❤️❤️ cane posts ❤️❤️❤️ More defense techniques please ❤️❤️❤️ getting out of cane grabs❤️❤️❤️
I need a partner to demonstrate those techniques. I’ll try and find one next week! Thanks!
Wow! This gives my video monopod a totally new purpose in case someone would try to rob my camea.
Haha. Yes! Good idea! I had not thought of that one!
I am disabled, and use an Irish blackthorn walking stick, it also has thorns on the bark.
Perfect and beautiful stick!
thank you!
When Oak breaks it's splinters but Hickory splits slowly, it is a more durable wood. I have an Irish Blackthorn cudgel that is also pretty damn hard. The other day I ordered a polypropylene axe head style cane from the cold steel company in Texas.
Blackthorn is amazing! I have several sizes of shillelagh in Blackthorn. Cold steel is also great. Thanks!
@@pasquinilli I love this high impact polypropylene crookneck ax head Style cane that I got from Cold Steel. Not only is it a devastating weapon and an extremely durable cane, I use it as a barbell for my exercise resistance power bands.
Very informative, wish I knew earlier 😊
ThNks
I got the hickory military special and love it. And it’s engraved.
That’s an awesome cane PKD!
Love the channel. Never thought about a cane for a weapon
Thanks Frank!
As a senior, riddled with arthritis, my reaction time is slower. Facing a younger, quicker & aggressive attacker, would it be better to strike center mass first? I am thinking that because the head is a smaller target, the attacker might be able to get his head out of the way quicker than the torso. The objective would be to stop the attacker with a thrust and then bring the shaft down from my shoulder level to his head in a slashing motion.
yes. I think that is correct. Going to the center with a two handed thrust from the hip, is my favorite and one I teach to my in person students. We do it a lot and stress test it. Make sure it works. It's fast and requires less strength and speed than other techniques because there is less travel of the arms and hands and cane. Thank you!
@@pasquinilli Thank you! I appreciate your taking time to share your thoughts on this!
If he bends over quick enough, snap it upward from the completed thrust position into his descending face.
if you don’t react fast enough, they can shut down a center mass strike. I like lower leg strikes. They are harder to see and defend against once the aggressor is in striking range. You can be stepping back and swinging at the knee/chins as they move forward. The biggest guys can’t take a solid knee strike because no matter how muscular the legs, the knee is always vulnerable. Knee/chin strikes are my go to first strike in most cases. You lift your cane and people automatically raise their hands and then you crack their knee 😊
I'm a senior (70) with arthritis. What works for me is to keep those joints moving all the time. I always bent my joints for a few minutes as a warmup, then workout easy gradually increasing the intensity. I do this before going out.
Keep practicing, all you have to do is to land one good one and the rest will be easy.
So, what you're saying is they're ALL " One of the most dangerous techniques..."
Lol. I guess so yes!
target aquisition...finally someone that speaks english.
Haha. Thanks Michele!
Thanks pal you have helped
Thank you Steve!
Great stuff!
Thanks Steve!
@@pasquinilli Hi Matt, I've been learning martial arts for about 25 years, mostly MMA & Kali. I'm just getting into two handed weapons like the Jo, Bo, & walking stick. I really like the realistic techniques you show...keeping it simple. I just joined your "dojo team", mostly just to give you some cash :) I also take private "short staff" lessons from a kali instructor and an Aikido instructor, but I'm still very interested in your videos. Thanks!
Thank you
Thank you for watching Stephany!
I'm going to contact my friend Christian Darce owner of Revolution Clubs and see if he makes one out of Hickory which he told me is the most durable Hardwood for violent impact. He makes all varieties of wooden Indian clubs. I bought two pairs of Persian meels from him. The kind that the Iron Sheik used to bring in the wrestling ring.
That sounds awesome. Let me know what he says. Thank you!
Funny to see you mention the iron Sheik. I worked at Shallford hospital , now named Dunwoody hospital, in Atlanta in 1980s, with the Iron Sheiks wife who was a nurse. She was a very sweet lady.
@@martinmaddox5315 she might have originally been from Minnesota because I detect the accent. I think he met her when he first started with Verne Gagne in the AWA.
Great video. I carry my hand made ironwood cane when I walk. I have very good upper body strength, but my knees are not too good. I can move well, but can’t run well. Your techniques will help me a lot. Thanks and take care.
Thanks Quinn! How heavy is your ironwood cane? It’s such a beautiful wood too!
Not too heavy, bursting as hell.
@@quinntheeskimooutdoors6234 that’s awesome!
Lookin buff Matt. U should do a video on your workout program
I will! Lots of air squats and pushups! Hahaha
Thanks you master.👍🍀🍀🍀
Thanks Janos!
Damn you're a great speaker!!
Wow! Thanks Pete!
For older , lesser trained people the two handed pushing technique is a bad choice. It brings the defender in too close , leaves them exposed to strikes and grabs , as well as a disarm. The utility of the cane is to maintain distance and deliver two handed strikes
The distance is closed almost instantly in many cases and so it is important to also learn how to fight as close as possible. For beginner through advanced.
If you are in close range , you are in range to get hit. The cane and Han bo extend your range , and the distance you can strike from without being hit.
@@Desperado3248 also, you can lose that range and need to be able to fight with zero distance. Both are true.
where can we buy that kind of walking cane?

Without the proper attitude toward fighting, you will walk into a mountain. With the proper attitude toward fighting you will walk to the top.
Great saying!
@@pasquinilli I was reading book of five rings while trying to meditate on Luke, walking with my hands in front of me, while carrying a satchel of books.
A man walked toward me, folding, and unfolding his wrists as I was meditating on cut through the enemy; and he walked around.
I realized, if i were not careful with my thoughts, I would run into the mountain. He stepped aside, and I meant him no harm. We spoke, and I left with a new appreciation for peace this day.
If I see him again, I will be at my best not to knock him from his stride.
@@pasquinilli I did find this: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of good will."
Hahaha. Merry Christmas!
Tha❤nks Matt I added a rafter rafter joining nail plate curved on the bottom of my Kane it sure is sharp it's like a meat grinder if you get hit and you can hardly see it😂😂😂😮
Ouch! That will get the job done!
Thank you, but you forget the 4th one to use the hook to hook the bad guy back if he runs away.

Hi, do you ship to France ?
I am sorry for having so many questions. But i wanna know this one. Would an 144 cm staff, work as a jo? I tried 130 cm jo, but it feels weird for me,even tho i am 158 cm tall. So, would an 144 cm staff work as a jo?

Are rattan canes any good for this sort of stuff?
for the first minute or so, I was wondering why I would be learning a dangerous technique for me to use ... why would I want to learn that? It is not until later that it is explained ... a dangerous technique for the assailant ... I almost didn't hang around that long
Price is a big problem for me. Do you have a less expensive option?
Excellent info, you bet your ass if its him or me my cain will win everytime tks. For sharing !!!!
I'm 72 y/o. I know 30 people who use canes, they don't use wooden canes. If you're on a cane you don't have the lower body strength the go toe to toe with a younger, quicker adversary. Almost every senior has a large rubber foot on the end of their cane for stability. If you're strong enough to do these parrying maneuvers, you don't need a cane.
I carry s cane. Very hard wood made from a branch with a good hand grip. But I have a cord around the cane and around my wrist so it cant be dropped or pulled away from me.

For sure now... I'm never going to approach a person with a cane from behind and tap them on the shoulder ever again--no matter what!
In Japan if you carried that cane and hit somebody in the throat, and they died, you are extremely likely to be charged. Defending yourself against any unarmed attacker with that cane will also likely get you charged. Notice I said ‘that cane’.
Are you allowed to defend yourself in Japan?
@@pasquinilli
Yes, but in your case your videos explaining the features of the cane and demonstrating your skills with it would show a degree of understanding, and therefore potentially intent, to do far greater harm than would be considered necessary. Blocking an attack with a regular cane would be a different situation from purposely using that special ‘knife edge’ that might result in serious injury. According to my wife (and I do take what she says as ‘not necessarily fully accurate’ killing someone that broke into your house ,neven if they were attacking you, is not automatically justified.
The ‘Well, it’s just a cane and I was defending myself’ won’t necessarily fly.
I would like to know about getting swarmed
Working on it for you.
@@pasquinilli ok thank you
you are a strong non- elderly . male with no disability. I would like to see a small woman in her 80s with an injured hip and a back with arthritis and disk degeneration showing these techniques. How much force can she generate, how balanced can she be while stepping forward? I was in law enforcement in the 70s, and was well trained in using a baton. I am now a 5' 82-year-old elderly woman with a hip replacement due to a fracture and an unstable back due to age. I use a cane or a hiking staff and practice self defense moves, but don't generate a lot of force. Both assistive sticks have a pointed feral on both the handle and the bottom. I often walk alone.
Thanks. I was supposed to have one hip replaced this week, it got pushed back til March. The other will be in May. I have end stage arthritis in my hips and have a hard time moving most days. Many of my clients are closer to your age with different levels of disability. Some have very little mobility left. We all do what we can do. There is always something that can be done. I learn from my clients that progress is always possible but the path is never the same. I learn from my pain and lost strength, flexibility, and mobility, that I have to let go of comparison. Aging is a humbling and often humiliating journey, but it is unavoidable and universal. I thank you for your feedback and your perspective. I also value it very much. Stay safe!
oh yeah my cane was hand made out of iron wood a very very very hard wood i can brake stuff like sinderblocks and more ,.
What we can do to avoid the opponent takes the cane with his hands?
If you use a bludgeon in a fight, your opponent had better be holding a weapon too.
Did you say metal cane
Solar plexus jab.
Crotch shot.
Belly thrust.
You’re too kind. You leave too much on the table. But what you show is spot on.
Haha. True. Thanks!
@@pasquinilli
After further reflection I can see why you might not show all of the possibilities to everyone.
Some effective responses can cause serious injury & serious consequences.
Often the most effective responses are too effective for the circumstances.
And it takes a lot of training to get to where you can instinctively respond in a way that prevents harm without causing excessive or permanent damage.
After we have studied for a while we tend to lose touch with the mindset of all but the most awkward of beginners.
And without a lot of training most people cannot bring themselves to deliver a really heinous response to attack, even if life is in danger.
I began studying at 12. In retirement now. One of the best things about martial arts is it provides an avenue for physical, mental and spiritual growth.
Didn’t plan to think that deeply about this but it has led me to a deeper understanding of types of effective techniques vs. just watching yet another hand to hand attack-response videos.
Thanks.

👍
Thank you Mark.
If a cane is so effective, imagine using a crow bar as a thrusting mechanism. Just wondering.
Ouch!
A friend did trucking in small trucks. Some in a big truck wanted to fight so friend grabs the tire iron and gets out. The other trucker leaves.
With a thrusting motion, the attacker can easily grab the stick?
Not if you hit him with it
I suspect that the one armed thrust is just offering it to your opponent to take from you
J'ai une canne épée 👍
Great, it would be perfect...if only someone invented a way to hide the stick in their clothes, I can’t always walk around with the grandfather cane.
Practice, 100 thrust a day. Good exercise. Practice makes perfect.
