- Snack bags are the PERFECT project to feel accomplished in the sewing room. They require very little material, planning or time, and are an item that you’ll use daily. In my shop, they sell fast and are so loved by my customers. I hope you have so much fun making things!
***Lots of conflicting advice on the "right side" of PUL fabric. I suggest you contact your PUL source and ask for guidance. I've contacted mine, and here was the response (I use either side in our bags)
"The shiny side is tested for food safety. For testing the fabric has to hold different solvents at different temperatures for specific periods of time, so we had to select a side to be the inside and we selected the shiny side, as that is the waterproof film. The fabric side was not tested, but there are no chemicals added, so if the food touches the fabric side there is nothing that will leach off. We had concerns that the fabric would absorb moisture or stain, so we considered it to be the outside. For storage we would advise to use the shiny side only."

I love the clarity of your instructions, always giving the “why” as well as the “what.” It is SO helpful, especially to those of us who are “bag beginners.” Thank you!
So cute! I love that plaid with the pink vinyl! Thanks for this!
Thank you!! As always, your tutorial is done so well!!
Your tutorial’s are so good. Well organized. You take the time to carefully explain every step. Thank you 😊
LOVE your videos so much! You do a fantastic job at explaining how to make these awesome projects😊
Top-notch tutorial, as always. Thank Jess for taking the time to teach!
As always, a great and thorough tutorial. Actually this is the best one I've watched of many many many on making a small zippered pouch. Covers all the usual questions and gives all the needed reminders!! Thank you:)
I just love how you film your tutorials!!! They are so straight forward with clear instructions and great camera angles! ❤️💕
Awesome snack bags! I will definitely be making some. Love your tutorials, you are always so upbeat.
Yes this is adorable. You also give good clear instructions!! Thanks
I've made many bags similar to this over the years. I really like how you do the zipper on this and that was great for me to learn. It was much easier to sew the sides together though, past the zipper end areas with my zipper foot. Thanks for the great tutorial...
Thank you Jessica ! Will be making these ! Your videos make my Mondays
I just made my first bag! Using your tutorial for the snack bags it's fabulous my mum will love it!
Gahhh, I just made this bag and it’s so adorable. I didn’t make it as a snack bag but to put wires in and I’m going to make many more and eventually snack ones when I get food grade fabric. I love it so much. I used denim for the bottom and cotton canvas for the top and water proof ripstop for the lining. The tutorial was so helpful.
Great video, I need to make some of these. And of course I happen to have the blue pul, so thanks for the stretch maintenance tips 😉
What a great tutorial! I'll have to give this a try
Best bag/zipper tutorial! The Best!! Thank you.
💕😍💕 I love how simple and cute this is ! Thank you for sharing
Isn't it? I love that too. Sometimes we just need quick and clean.
I am surprised this channel hasn't blown up. Its perfect. I cant even decide which video to watch next....did she just say fat quarter friendly? Love it.
I made one of these for my sewing machines parts with Tula pink sewing machine fabric and I just love it so much !! I will be making more. Thank you Jessica so much
I made 3 last night in about an hour. Love them. Thanks for the tutorial.
I just stumbled upon your channel and I am so happy I did. I have never seen one person have so many different bag tutorial options. I was tired of the same kind of tote bag and zipper pouch. Your bags are beautiful.
I use food safe PUL from Wazoodle and asked their support team about wrong and right side. Was told depends on use. When using the Food safe PUL, the shiny side is the food safe side and used against the food.
Thank you Beth! After your email I reached out to them as well. The food safe said is the shiny side, but the fabric side is also safe to use, just not tested for foods at various temperatures like the shiny side is (it might stain, too, with liquid foods). I really appreciate your help and advice! One day I'll get the ride side of PUL right in a video!
So which side are we supposed to use for the bags?
Shiny side if food involved. Cleans easier
Great little tutorial. Such a handy little pouch with so many uses.
I'll be making these for grandkids going back to school. 👏🏼👏🏼👍😉
This would be great in my workplace. I work in corrections and we can only bring in clear items. I love your clear pouch items and this will be on my list for my coworkers.
Awesome Tutorial, Jess! Thank you. I am thinking I will swap out insulbright for fusible fleece to make it usable to keep cold snacks in. I need to eat on a regular basis to keep my blood sugars from dropping (I'm hypoglycemic) and I like to have string cheese or Greek yogurt cups on hand for my snacks. 😊 While it wouldn't keep the items cold for hours on end, it would keep them cool for an afternoon trip out to the park or for errands.
Love Wazoodle. They have great fabrics!! Used them for years! The idea of the flat bottom is great!!
They really have SUCH an amazing selection!
I have been sewing for years and have made many little pouches like this one so I almost didn't listen to this video BUT I am so glad
I did!!! If someone has never made one the instructions are about the best I have ever watched. Plus, I even learned some wonderful tricks I wasn't using that I will definitely use in the future. So impressed I decided to subscribe - you should too.
I just bought a heavy duty sewing machine so I'm gonna try this project! Thank you
You are an awesome and detailed instructor. Thanks.
I just followed your instructions and made myself a lovely little wristlet. I just got my snack bag template and they will be my next big project.
This is a really good size pouch, perfect for not to small fabric scraps.
love your tutorials i’ve been watching them non stop for weeks. it think i’m going to use this method, size it up to a cross body size and a couple of little zip pockets and a strap. i love how simple it is. xx
you are so very informative and so easy to understand. Thank You
I love this little snack bag, just followed along and made my own. I added my initial instead of a tag. Your instructions are very clear, thank you so much. 😁
Woohoo!
Headed to my sewing machine right now to make some snack bags! Thx for the tutorial!
Have fun!
Your tutorial videos are excellent! Thorough, clear, succinct and perfect camera work.I do have 1 question, I'm wondering how much you sell these snack bags for when they're in your store?
Thank you very much for sharing your projects.
I made one!! Yay!! Thank you, I forgot to add the tab for a keyfob, oh well, next one.
I think you explain things very good. And you show us as you go. I am dyslexic so I have to look very hard to get it right. Thank you very much.
Thanks for this tutorial… I made a bunch in my own design snack bags for my family with Wazoodle PUL… we all absolutely love them. And no more single use plastic zippy bags. Wazoodle company is in the town I grew up in… it’s MADE IN USA Bensalem, PA!!! PUL tip- use a roller presser foot, or a teflon foot to prevent slipping… also, Janome blue tip sewing machine needle is amazing for sewing this… my Schmetz needles were sticking before a local shop owner suggested it… and I don’t have a Janome- works with any standard machine.
Thank you for this tutorial, it was wonderful! I will add though that I hate PUL with an unholy passion. I made 3 pouches - I laughed, I cried, I rage snacked. But, most importantly, I now have 3 cute snack pouches and I feel like making 1000 more. Thank you xx
So cute and fun! They're so nice its hard to believe that they're for snacks🤩 this is truly the best idea and machine washable that's awesome! Thank you and as always stay well🙂
Thank you! And they really are so loved. We've made these for so many friends (and friends of other family members) and they're used constantly.
just placed my first order for the food approved PUL thanks for the link
So cute! I'm going to make some!
I did a mini version all vinyl and I love it
I made 15 of these this weekend for my son’s upcoming wedding shower and I plan on doing 15 more before Saturday! It’s truly addicting lol. I am having so much fun coordinating fabrics and zippers!
Super impressive!
Amazing as always. 😘
Awwww thank you!
I luckily have a Teflon presser foot and zipper foot. Great bag!
What a cute pattern! And great tutorial as always! I wonder if you could use a strip of tearway when you are sewing the pull and then rip it off when you are done.
Enjoyed❤
I wish there was an ITH embroidery version. Great video!!
thank you, like it
Not heard of this in UK, will definitely give them a go xx
Let me know how it goes!
These are so cute! Thank you so much for your videos! I do love them!! Question, I didn’t think vinyl is washable. Whenever I find it in the fabric store it says spot clean only, or something like that. Is there a certain kind to buy that is machine washable?
I love this little bag Jess! Thank you for sharing the measurements. How much do you sell them for ?
Great tutorial Jess how come I never figured your tip on doing zipper taps like that. Thanks a million
I really want to add these to my products of my small business, I currently sell scrunchies and headbands :)
Hi Jess, great tutorial as always. Just had a quick question please. Can you machine wash and dry waterproof canvas? I am new at sewing bags and could not find the answer anywhere. I would love to use it inside bags. Thank you!
Thanks!
Finally! A video that doesn't mess around with fiddly little zipper tabs! I have been wondering why nobody does what you just did. When you say, "we," are you talking you and your mom, or the royal we? Just wondering. I have been meaning to make a batch of these, so now you have inspired me! Thanks from Orlando.
My "we" is the OklaRoots behind the scenes team :)
Hi, I am new to embroidering. After watching you several times I have decided to make a bag. It was intimidating at first but your description was so easy to watch and understand.
I do have a question. Who helped you get your website up and running?
TY
Hi Jess!!!! Love your videos!!!! Thank you so much!!! Are you washing your quilt cotton first for your snack bags?
Thank you
Love It!! Making these for my grand babies :) Thank you! Question...Where do you purchase you zippers? Thanks in advance
I love love your videos. I use your sewing projects nearly exclusively so I can access your videos. They are the best .Thank you. I have made several of these snack bags and I love them. However, I was uncertain about the PUL fabric. In this video, you instruct to use the fabric-like side as front which means it lies next to the food. I have watched and re-watched and hope I am correct in interpreting your instruction. Since I was confused, I contacted Wazoodle about the PUL fabric and they were very clear that the 'shiny' side should be next to the food. Please let me know where I have confused this issue. Thanks!!!
Thank you for the explanation on the Pul material. I thought I was doing something wrong. It was over stretching. I threw the project in the garbage.
Thanks for this idea. I love it 🥰 I am going to make one for my husband for Father’s Day. He eats peanut M&Ms and we always have those bags rip open too far and food on the floor. This will be great. I may use my embroidery machine to monogram Dad’s Candy on the top part on yellow fabric and brown vinyl on the bottom like M&Ms. Also thanks for the link to the PUL fabric. You mentioned it in the Petal Bag tutorial and I never heard of it, but it wasn’t linked there.
Great idea!! I think this would be an amazing gift for him! Let me know how it goes.
You can also use an M&M bag to make the snack bag!! Carefully cut apart the M&M bag, and apply iron on vinyl on top. Fussy cut to center the design for the upper piece, then use it like regular fabric. You can search CZcams and Google for tutorials with videos! 🥰
Super quick project!
Right?! Love those!
@@OklaRoots ma’am, I’m going to make this!!!!!
This is awesome! any idea where to get the zipper tape? Thanks jess
I'm loving the plaid (check) fabric....where did you get it? Also, would you consider making a stroller bag that velcros onto the back handle..snack ,sunglasss holder, phone holder in one..?
Just tried my first snack bag, first time using pull, first time using a zipper. I have to say it’s pretty cute, just don’t look to closely at the lining, lol.
I bought everything to make snack bags, and now I can say I was waiting for this boxed-corner-amazingness instead of procrastinating. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Thanks for another great tutorial!
Hahaha well get on it Kimberly!
@@OklaRoots can you use cork in place of vinyl?
I’ve been following your videos for quite some time and this is my first comment. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching. I find your videos thoroughly relaxing and very inspiring. You’re very humble, well spoken, prepared, encouraging and organized. I’ve watched other bag makers on CZcams but hands down you’re my favourite. All the best from a Canadian fan 😊
Well Maureen Kent I’m new to the channel and actually just stumbled across it and love her too! I couldn’t put what you just posted in better words so high five to you and please Mrs Jess from OKLAROOTS -you just keep on going girl!! I was like OH YEAH OH YEAH 💃🏼💃🏼 I’m fixing to sew my very first project and the only down fall I see is I’m on a diet and think they’re so darn cute I already want to fill it up with snacks😂😂😉😉 seriously you have a fantastic adorable personality you even get my hubby to chuckle a bit!!! Thank you for your hard work!!!
I luv all your videos. I am trying the Guadeloupe Bag, but, there are only 2 tutorials and they are both blah blah and don't follow the pattern so, all I can do is look at my cut out pattern pieces and hope that you will someday do a tutorial on it. Hoping..... Belinda.
Hi love you tutorial where you find does fabrics with pretty prints patterns.
Hi Jess, great tutorial! ❤️ I was wonder what size zip you use here, #5? Also, what is your favorite to use on pouches, #3, #4.5 or #5?
I've been trying to find cute nylon, metallic #4.5 zips & i'm not having luck. Have you seen those before? Thanks!! 😊
I LOVE THIS! Can you tell me what "weight" PUL you generally use for your snack bags? I want to make sure what I use will do the job, but don't want to spend more than necessary so I can make my bags affordable to my customer base, but still hold their goodies!
Hi. I want to make these, but I'd like to be able to hang them on my backpack. Where would you attach a snap hook? Thank you for all of your fabulous videos.
Hey there. Love the tutorial and just wondering what type of sewing machine you use?
hi jess. can I leave the opening for turning the bag on a side seam instead of the bottom. thank you
Try making your own beeswax linings for your bags. Just wipe with cool water. Refresh wax about once a year
The link for the pul fabric isnt work... dang it! Hopefully, that issue will resolve. I know it's not your doing.
Fabulous video, per the usual! 😁❤🙂🥰
Could you use ripstop I think it’s called as that’s waterproof as well if using for personal use
Hi Jess. And many of your tutorials you talked about your waterproof canvas. Where do you purchase your waterproof canvas? You have such cute prints and nice colors and anything I have seen online it just looks like industrial strength like for boats and stuff like that. I've looked at a few of your tutorial links and I've not seen it listed in there. Thank you very much. If you don't mind me asking what do you sell your snack bags for? I'm thinking of making some of these to try and sell at craft fairs or just online. If you're not comfortable giving that information I totally understand.
Oohhh...I think I might add a divider to mine🤔!! For grapes/strawberries or popcorn/chocolate. Great, now I'm hungry!!
Thanks for another cutie project Jess!!
Oooooooo I love this idea!!
Love this I going to made some.for my shop.how much do you sell them for.thanks God.bless
Best zipper tapes EVER!
Great Project. What kind of zipper tape do you use and where do you purchase it from?
Question. If I can to use cotton canvas for the top do I still need to interface it?
Love these Jess. Thank you for sharing. I don't see them in your shop. Do you have some listed?
Not yet! We'll have them listed soon though
Hi. Have you heard of odicoat ? It is painted on fabric to make it waterproof.😃
Jess, where do you get your peg board accessories? I love the square storage boxes, but cant find them anywhere. Thank you.
What stabilizer for the bottom if I use quilt cotton?
Jess,
In your description you suggest Cork or Vinyl (I assume Marine Vinyl) for the bottom cuts. Could you please let me know how do those materials do in machine washing?
Thanks!
Love your organization .... where can I get those zippers?
How does your vinyl hold up in the wash? Anything I don’t have to wash by hand is top notch for me 😅
I make my tabs longer so joined into seam.always have. I can't comprehend why you are doing it like bias binding.
I have found that it is easier to sew with the PUL on the bottom.
what kind of vinyl do you use that can go in the washing machine?
What kind a thread do you use to make wallets and handbags on your domestic sewing machine?
