Excellent build. Obviously well thought out.
In a nutshell it does the business, without being complicated.
I have been trying to find the best way of creating an entry and exit for a while. This idea fits the bill.
    Thanks for the inspiration. 🤗

Wow! I wish I had that kind of room to run trains. Feeling Jelly. Super nice.

Thank you. This layout is my 5th. I always wanted to build the basement empire, but I'm glad I got to build smaller layouts first. Partially for the skill and experience, partially to know what I was getting myself into!

Dear Ray, cool concept for a double deck swing gate.

You are right about the wood expanding during the different seasons. I have a dual lift-up section and they both get stiff during the winter season when it is 100% more humid in my country! I actually have to "force" it into the gap! If I had built it in winter, there would have been too big a gap in summer!

This is super nice, i have a very small oval shape layou, and have been trying to descide on lift out, or swing gate. This has been interesting. Thank you.

Such a well thought out and executed design. Most layout builders would probably be wary of building a decent swing gate on one level.
But you go out in one of those “here hold my beer” moments and engineer a flawlessly working swing gate with two levels and with a trestle scene on the top deck to boot.
    Sir, I am not worthy!

    Thanks Ray! Excellent video!!
My thoughts about my swing gate were following pretty much the same approach you used. Seeing how successful yours is really eases my mind about the workability of the final product. My swing gate, though only single deck, will be almost exactly the same length as yours, so your installation will make a great blueprint for me to work from.
One thing surprises me a bit - I wouldn't have expected the gate style hinges you used to provide adequate lateral positioning accuracy, but clearly they do. I was planning to use a set of exterior door hinges, thinking their tolerances would be tighter. Same expectation with the latch at the other end, and again it apparently does give the accuracy needed.
One more thing - thanks for the plug! 😁

    Nice job and well explained.
I find myself in need of a swing gate (or drop in) section on one spot of my mountain layout which has two tiers of of tracks that are about 18" apart in height. It is not a double deck layout, but two tracks that will be connected with scenery.
I am trying to figure the best way to approach this. To complicate the problem it located in a corner. (I need to give better access to a breaker panel).
    All the best...

Did you design the George Washington Bridge in your spare time? Very impressive.

If you know anything about building... Triangles are Strong! 3 angles = 180' Good. Squares/Boxes/ 4 angles = 360' Bad
