  • NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #34: BONBY
Here we go with another of the Low Villages in North Lincolnshire. This is Bonby, once again located on the B1204 in the Ancholme Valley, approximately 4 miles (6 km) south of Barton-upon-Humber
Relatively little is known about Bonby historically speaking. Here’s what we do know. It was shared by several Anglo Saxon Thanes before the Norman Conquest.
In Domesday times it was recorded under the name of "Bundebi". The Lindsey Survey in 1115 showed it to be owned by two men, one of whom was Robert de Humel who was a constable of Normandy
giving the village a French connection. Bonby had a small priory, which was under French control - we’ll speak about that later as we journey around.
By the 1300’s John de Hotham had purchased the manor - he would be the man who would go on to be Bishop of Ely, and chancellor of England in 1327
In 1375 the village was described as a “waste and without buildings” and its land was “sandy and stoney” and often flooded by the River Ancholme. High ranking Yorkshire families then came in during the 1400s
Thankfully today the village is a little less confusing. It’s still very much agricultural as it always has been. It has a thriving community served by a village hall. There’s no pub though, but it used to have a very popular one before it closed
Time for another TVI wander in North Lincs!
