Black Hunter Recurve Pt. 2 - Is it a good inexpensive bow?

  • The Black Hunter Recurve bow comes in at a very enticing price point of 109 dollars, but is it worth the money? In this video I do a review redo of sorts. After having used the bow for sometime now I can say that I am impressed with the performance of the Black Hunter Recurve. There are some things that you need to be mindful of if you plan on purchasing one. I cover some of the negatives that I have seen in reviews for this product.

    The person who laughed about it not having instructions is an ass. Before i bought my black hunter, I hadn't ever shot a bow. True, the assembly was common sense. Until brace height, nock point, string silencers, etc. It wasn't all self explanatory, so thank God for yt and for folks like u Scott to help folks like me. I put my email in one of my comments when u asked which part of Ga I live. Stay woke brother, and everyone be safe.

    yes this is the updated version (straight limbs end). My wife and I both own a black hunter, with recurve and longbow limbs, we never had an issue with it, and yes it's a really good shooter, better than a few 500$ bows I own.... for the price, don't think twice !

    Thanks for the review Scott, The earlier Black Hunters are brilliant,I have 2 sets of limbs 45 & 50 & both spot on with the longbow limbs.The shape where they attach to the riser is not flat.They shoot like an expensive bow Junxing is the actual maker so i got a Pharos 2 ILF from them & had limb weight issues.I wonder if its only the recurve limbs that are out..Glad you got yours sorted .Cheers from Dowm Under

    That was a great review Scott, and I'm glad you got a good one. I agree with you, I want to know the specs for my bow, I don't want to have to guess ... even if I decide to change it up a little. For example, my Lwano Bow 45lb recurve has the exact same deminsions, string length, & Brace height of between 7.5-8" recomondation. O have played with it going onto my 5th month and have decided that it shoots best for me with a Brace height of 8 3/16 - 8 1/4" likewise since I shoot vanes I put a light paying of fur on my shelf as a buffer and have my nocking point set as high as you do at roughly 5/8".
    They are very good looking bows ... if I ever get one, I want thar redush colored one ... it looks really cool to me!
    Sorry for being so long winded ... God bless you, and keep you & your family safe brother!

    Hey Scott, glad you're enjoying the bow. Have to say, your grouping is impressive, given that you're shooting instinctively. I shoot Easton alum. 2119's out of my Hoyt Pro Vantage Tracer 55-70 lb. compound (yep, it's an oldie but a goodie, heavy as all get out, but I like the stability). Still haven't had a chance to try out my DAS 50 lb. recurve yet, but hopefully soon. Anyway, good luck with the Black Hunter. I'm curious to see how you like the longbow version.

      Thanks my friend I really appreciate the feedback! Where i suffer is beyond 20 yards, that's where I need to work on somethings to improve. But that's the fun part of archery, having an excuse to get out and shoot. Nothing wrong with a little more weight in s bow, agreed on the stability part of it. I think it all boils down to what works for us as individuals. I do like the bow, but curious about the mileage I'll get out of it. Time will tell I guess.

    I had one of the longbow limb tips shear off. It's a manufacturing error, as I was using a B50 string with 10.3 grain per pound arrows. I could glue it back on, and has been ok since then. I have a total of 5 limb sets, and only had the one limb, so that's a 10% chance of the tip popping off.
    Another bow for you to look at would be the TimberRidge Takedown bow. Just about the same as the Black hunter, but has a more custom look on a production bow. I have one, and shoot it all the time.

    I picked one up from a buddy for 45 in the box. He couldnt get the limbs mounted. The riser threaded inserts were installed crooked so I drilled them out and replaced them. Got the limbs mounted but they still were off, neither top or bottom lined up because the centering dowels were also crooked. This thing was a mess. After finally getting everything fixed, the nocks cut the string so had to re sand both upper and lower limb nocks. I cut the window crown and center shot better and finally had a bow that would go together and shoot correctly. After checking the weight, it was off, supposed to be 45lb and was actual 38lb. After all was said and done, I ended up with a bow that seems to shoot pretty decent. Would I ever pump any money to the china ecomony and buy another, no. It is what it is and now there are a couple dozen knock offs so its just not worth the headache.

    What is your draw length, the bow is set at 28 inches if you are pulling longer than 28 inches you will add about 2 to 3 pounds of draw weight for every inch over 28 inches. Whenever people see a low price tag they're automatically skeptical and rightly so. I also think we like to justify paying several hundred dollars for a bow and don't like the idea that we could be outshot by a bow costing a fraction of the price. I certainly prefer my Damon-Howatt hunter but this is a fun bow to stump around with and perfectly capable of taking game.

      Great comment and insight my friend. I agree the appeal of owning a high end bow or anything for that matter is not a bad thing, but there are many lower priced options out there that are great shooters as well. When I shot compound exclusively I always wanted the latest and greatest because I felt like I was missing something. I think at the end of the day whatever feels right and gives you enjoyment in this sport is all that really matters. And yes this bow is very capable of taking game. • @ScottWinters
      @ScottWinters  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. My draw length is 28.5 / 29 inches. The bow specs stated show the bow good up to 30 inches. After that you would possibly experience stacking. With the bow length of 60 inches it should be good at your height and draw length. Where the problem presents itself is if your overall bow length is short / shorter it gets a bit cramped for taller people. It's not that it wouldn't shoot or perform any different, it would lead to over extending the limbs and adding a lot of stress to them over the course of time. This one is actually the shortest bow that I own, all of my others are 62, 64, and 70 inches in length. This one performs no different in my shot cycle. I hope that helps my friend. Thanks again and have a great day. Best regards

    • @ScottWinters
      @ScottWinters  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment and the question. At 6 3 you might find it a bit cramped but it will work for you. The reason I say that is I found the sight window to be a bit small for my liking. It’s not a deal breaker though. I too am a 30 inch draw and it worked well for me with no issues. If you can get used to the sight window it will make a good shooter for you.

    I’m your opinion I’m looking into getting into the sport of archery and in to the trad world I’ve looked at that bow would you honestly recommend it to some new like myself or is there a recurve bow that you would recommend for me like I said I was looking at that one along with a few others and now I’m on the fence about it and again another great video and I like you honest opinion

    • @ScottWinters
      @ScottWinters  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. In all honesty I would not recommend this bow to a new archer. My reasoning is simple, there are too many accounts of people having issues with it. I really think I got lucky only having the one minor issue of incorrect draw weight. My two recommendations for beginner bows are the Samick Sage, and the Soutwest Archery Ghost take down long bow. Both are excellent in my opinion. Yes the Sage gets bagged on a good bit, but it is still one of my favorites to shoot. In the 4 years I have had it there has never been an issue with it. Also, since it is a take down you can purchase new limbs as you grow into it. The Ghost long bow is unique in the fact that you can purchase additional recurve limbs to add to it making it a dual setup.
      There is also a brand that goes by the name of Ragim, and I believe it's an Italian made bow that I have heard good things about, but I have no experience with them.
      Whatever you decide on just make sure it's the right fit for you. As you progress in your archery journey you will find what works and doesn't work for you personally. I really hope you find that perfect fit for you. If I can help in any way I will be glad to. Have a great evening my friend!

    Great video! And excellent precision you have!
    I thought about order such a bow from Mandarin Duck.
    And they sell arrows spine 500 suitable for draw weights from 30-60 pounds.
    Do you have any comment to that? Will the same arrow be good for both 30 and 60 pounds? Is it a compromise that they are optimal for 45 pound and still works decent within the span of +- 15 pounds?

    • @ScottWinters
      @ScottWinters  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thank you for the comment my friend. 500 spined arrows will work for a few different draw weights. You may have to tune them specific to your weight to get the best arrow flight. I use them from 37 up to 45 pound draw weights and have no issues with them. Use a full length arrow with heavier weights up front for lower draw weights and they should work well. Any bow close to center cut does not have to deal with an archers paradox so the arrow flight is not affected as much. I hope that helps. I appreciate your time. Have a great evening. Best regards.

      Hello my friend. Apologies for the delayed response. I think the bow is a decent bow. The only negative I can see for a new archer is the quality control with the bow. For anyone new to the sport i would be hesitant to recommend this bow. I would instead look for something like the samick Sage in a low draw weight. For a starter bow it's a decent all around bow with little to no issues that I have heard of. That being said there are numerous options for a starter bow on the market. I hope you find the right one for you and that you have an awesome time learning archery. Have a great evening my friend. Best regards

    • @ScottWinters
      @ScottWinters  Před 2 lety +2

      If it were me buying again, I would most likely go with the longbow version or another bow altogether. I don't hear about many issues with the long bow black hunter. There are also little annoyances with it like the small sight window because of the short riser, but that's just me being particular. If you get one without quality control issues they are not a bad bow. But that seems to be hit or miss between vendors of this bow. I can't speak for the Galaxy ember, but I do own a galaxy longbow and I am pleased with it. I hope that helps. Thanks for taking the time to comment and for the question. Have a great day my friend. This bow would good for your height. Your draw length would determine how big the biw should be. If your draw length is 28 or shorter a 62 inch bow or shorter would be a good fit. If you a long draw length like I do then you should go with a longer overall length bow. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it can help go in the right direction. I hope that helped. what LBS would you recommend for a small 14 year old kid

    • @ScottWinters
      @ScottWinters  Před 2 lety +1

      In my opinion, If I were starting my son out on a traditional bow I would opt for a 25 pound option with a shorter overall AMO, something 60 inches long or a little shorter length. There are some great takedown setups on the market that allow for growth as you become stronger and more proficient. I know that seems like a really light weight, but it will be worth it and more enjoyable in the long run during the learning process. Now your child may be stronger could possibly pull more draw weight, but it makes it harder to get and be consistent with proper form and anchoring. By chance is there a local archery shop or club near to you? Most shops are willing to help in these type decisions and can see what weight will work for each individual. I hope that helps you. I wish you all the best in finding that just right bow. Have a great evening. Best regards

    Yeah, you were going on a bit too much about the weight. Yes, it’s a big problem, but I would have been more interested in hearing if they lived up to the high standards they keep promoting about their customer service, than how disappointed you were. You should have contacted them so we could all see if they would make good.
    You did for sure have a point about people who can’t test themselves, but even people who can test don’t profit from you doing nothing, and the company wasn’t chastised for their mistake. From what I hear, I still think I may get the bow, but I’d feel a lot better if I knew I could deal with an issue

      Ken, I think it ranks with the Samick performance wise, and outshines the Sage in the riser design, fit and finish. The Sage feels more blocky whereas the BH feels much more comfortable in the hand. Where I think it pales is the fact that there have been numerous issues with some of these. If that could be addressed and corrected it would make for a no brainer.I really got lucky that I only had one issue with the one I purchased. I love my Samick.
