- Swedish guitar-group The Spotnicks with The Rocket Man (1962). This song with its inspiring melody, which is restlessly driving on was adapted by Bo Winberg from old Russian melody "Polyushka Polye" or "Polyushko-Pole" (Cossack Patrol/Meadowland/Song Of The Plains/Oh My Fields/Cavalry of the Steppes).
In 1934 Lev Konstantinovich Knipper wrote his "Symphony No.4 in D major, Opus 41 - Poem of the Komsomol Fighters" (Komsomol was the Union of Communist Youth), which includes the famous song "Polyushko Pole" with lyrics (dedicated to the Red Army Field Marshall Kliment Voroshilov) by Victor Gusev. The music became one of the Marching songs of the Red Army Choir and one of the primary Russian patriotic anthems, long outlasting in popularity both the symphony that introduced it and the regime for which it was created.
"Polyushko Pole" became also known as "Meadowlands", "Song of the Plaines", "Cavalry of the Steppes", "O Field My Field" and Western arrangements as "Cossack Patrol". Some sources claim that the song was originally written during the Russian Civil War (1918) and was sung by the Red Army and a couple of anti-Soviet webpages even by White Army. Morton Gould addapted the song in 1945 in the USA as "The Red Cavalry Song" and it was broadcoasted by The Glenn Miller Orchestra under direction of Jerry Gray early 1945. A recording as "Cossack Patrol" was made by Ted Heath in England for Decca in February 1945. Bandleader Tex Beneke with The Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded their version in 1946 for RCA. - Hudba
"Are we not ASTRONAUTS? WE ARE SPOTNICKS!"
Devo !!!
Best of the heap. Bullseye.
Check out "Man or Astro man" incredible band
@@renegaleazzi3526 either it's Ohio's finest or Daft Punk's granddads.
Ages before the Residents. Before Devo. Before Space Oddity. I mean, c'mon! This is like pre-Postmodern artistic wizardry. These guys were hammer-down sincere.
Right on!
Don't forget the Coneheads ❤
It's Not That Unusual. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin Was The First Man In Space And This Was Obviously A Reaction To That Shortly Afterwards. The Music Wasn`t That Futuristics.
Space oddity? Worse of DB.
@@JeffreyWilliams-dr7qe This Is Synthetic Instrumental Music, A Different Genre.
Sweden's finest - early 60's guitar instrumental at it's best. Polyushka Polye is a tune that survives any treatment, and this tribute to Gagarin really works.
Also, somehow, the fact they're wearing suits and ties under that space get-up also still works a treat. Thanks for posting this.
The Waterboys also used the tune for Red Army Blues .
Ouah!
they were 20 years ahead of their time with those robot dance moves and space suits they look very much like a new wave band of 1979
From Akron Ohio -but how would Mothersbaugh have known of these dudes prior to soc. media?
@@johnmacqueen3811 Simple: go through record stores and find a Spotniks record by browsing, or see them on TV. It's not like Mark wasn't around in 1962, he was 11 - 12 then. Even though the internet shines light on plenty of bands, back in the day, you could still hear of different groups that people shared _if_ you were looking.
@@101Volts :
So true
they paved the way for kraftwerk and then kraftwerk paved the way for devo
20 years in the future? More like 1000!
The soft helmets and reverb we ALL want....
60 years old but still very popular! Wonderful band, atomic music! It was a great revelation in those days.
"Polyushko-Pole" music was created in 1933 in the USSR. Other versions - a myth)
Video is truly fantastic))))))merci
If they had done this exact same act in 1980, I for one would've been agog with excitement and wonder.
Out of this world twang , reverb and shoe box echo !!
Masters of the Universe. Rock On !!
I can't seem to get over all the hot licks these guy's play !!!!
super tune, the Spotnicks at their most greatest.
Probably a tribute to the very first man in space🚀 Youri Gagarin from Russia in April 1961!!
Yes and also to the Sputnik 1 satellite, the first ever satellite in space.
Wow, I was a very young girl when this was released in the 60s. I remember seeing them on a TV programme and hearing them on radio, but this is a first. I also agree that this was way ahead of it's time. Wonderful.
what à FANTASTIC sound!!!! i'ts magic ****************!!!!!!!!!!!
Super Group! love them
loved the Spotnicks great original guitar sounds there albums always had many different styles on them.
A classic Spotnicks instro. Unique sound . One of my all time favourite instros
Awesome.
love the production - glittering guitars!
Spotniks were Swedish instrumental band - dance moves based on/ copied from prior service English Shadows. They did pioneer wireless guitars and great audio processing. Devo much more sophisticated with social commentary lyrics. I LOVE both bands.
I volunteer to go back in time
Me too, when future times looked optimistic, well said sir!
J'adore ce groupe ça me rajeuni.😆🤗
Totally DEVO... Love this!
Just acquired the spotniks over London vinyl lp first press brilliant.
Old but gold!
Merci pour ces merveilleux souvenirs.
J'avais 9 ans à set époque 👍👌💓
excellent ✌
Michel !
Looks like early DEVO!
You nailed it!
DEVO looks like late Spotnicks
That's the first thing I thought too. OK, well second after the title, having been stolen from Billy Joel. ;)
So this is what DEVO devolved from....
more like zolar x.
WUNDERBAR.....💎
Ein einmalig grossartiger Song !! 🎵🎸
Wonderful, awesome, genious, thank you!
Björn Thelin. (27 juni, 1942 - January 24, 2017), The Spotnicks.
Margeir Ólafsson it went to fast :( R.I.P spotnicks baseman
Not too shabby! Never heard of this, 16 when it was released.
I was born because it was released!
Love a wild guitar!
"Meadowlands" always a sure-fire winner for me!
I won't argue that point. I followed DEVO from the very start (in Akron, OH).
merci yellowitom61 de nous montrer les meilleurs !!!!
Fantastic!!!!
From Abba to Bathory, from the Spotnicks to Dissection, this country used to surprise the world; now it's more like ''wtf happened in Sverige?''. By the way, are they still alive? The Spotnicks, that is.
Just think how big the Beatles would have been if they’d had a gimmick like spacesuits...
what a great track
Such a futuristic music.
like this very much.
Top groupe !!!
Outstanding
Rip : Björn Thelin (27 June 1942 -- 4 January 2017) Original founding member and bass guitarist
RIP Bo Winberg (1939-2020), Lead Guitarist
Nice edition.
R.i.p. Bo Winberg
Great!
Yes we love them too
awsome.
Electrifying!
Wow ! Dick Dale and the del tones meet Devo !!!!
Crazy
we all loved the shadows ! Plain to see this band was captured by the russian satellite Sputnik.....They present arms with their guitars as did the Shadows....
this is very cool.
Onekligen spektakulära scenkläder!!
Very cool
And the Space Cossocks version is called 'Cossock Rocket Patrol'. Tough to pick a fave- I guess the Spotnicks win cause A. it's from 1962 B. They've held together through the fall of the Soviet Unioin and C. AWESOME SPACESUITS!!!
Out of this world, Daddy-O
Yfib!!!
Boys you are good we love you keep it up
Wow! Polyushko Pole is one of my favourites - but are there still more modern renderings of this tune?
I was brought here by a sample of Bright Lights,Dark Shadows: the real story of Abba. Their future manager Stig Anderson was 'briefly involved' with The Spotnicks.
Oh yeah!!! Now that's the stuff. Ha! the right stuff.
Proto Devo!
😅Love it brilliant
it brought back memories , was it really 1962! when i bought it , i think it was on the Oriel label
From the same town as me this song is released the same year as am born.1962
Bravissimo
thank you!!!!
They could go among people and the guitar would be still playing as though they was still on stage
Jebediah Kerman loves this song!
I love that echo chamber bass sound!
Pre Devo!
OMG😮!!!!🚀🎸
Must have seen some footage of the Shadows and thought "hmmm...add a space suit and......."
Jättebra.
WOW!!! They were devolved before "Devo!"
And still better than most of the music videos since VH1 started
"Take us to your leader..the Ventures".
Genius. I have to think that they and/or the tune were a big influence on Laika and the Cosmonauts later on.
Toute ma jeunesse
Les spoutnik
