I loved that film. Sean Penn gave the best performance of his entire career and Milk should have won Best Picture of 2008. It is in my opinion the best movie I've seen over the last ten years.
I met Harvey Milk in 1976 when I was still in my teens visiting San Francisco. Met him on the street my first day there and he said "Welcome to San Francisco." How cool is that-- getting a greeting from one of the activist legends! I used to get directions from him and he was kind and friendly without any sense of self-importance (even though he was beginning to be well known at the time.) He was a wonderful, wonderful man and I loved him very much.
I just watched the movie.. The original.. So wonderful. Harvey exudes LOVE for All People. I, personally have had 'gay' friends in my life since I was young. Never thought anything of that. They were ALL wonderful Human . beings, whom I loved.

Afterwards, he mingled with the crowd and I was in the crowd. I was absolutely thrilled to be in San Francisco and used to stand outside the City Hall and wave at Mayor Moscone as he went in, also Dan White. Mayor Moscone would always says something in passing, just like "Good morning", whatever, and Dan White would just nod. But the only one I knew in the sense that I actually had a conversation with them with was Harvey Milk. Anyway, to your question. I was astonished and heart-broken and like everyone else who heard about it, it was almost impossible to believe. I didn't see it coming any more than anyone else. Even if Harvey Milk had never made the headlines, I would always remember the kind and friendly man I met. There was something larger than life about him and that made his death even harder to comprehend.
Harvey Milk was assassinated just under 10 years before I was born. Learning about him and his courage helped me to completely destroy my closet door. I'm proud of who I am, and no one can take that away from me! RIP Harvey, you're a true hero

He was not just a gay rights activist, he was a human rights activist, who also did tremendous things for otherminorities, senior citizens and just the city of San Francisco at large. A very complicated man, whose life, interests and scope of operations were very rich and varied.
@assindiastignani I didn't know much about Milk before the movie and yes, the movie did emphasize his LGBT activism. But I still got the impression he stood for all human rights, not just those who were members of the LGBT community. One of the first things he says in the movie is his desire to reduce the cost of public transportation in San Francisco. Affordable transportation for all is definitely NOT a purely LGBT issue.

God never says he hates gays, that they are committing an unforgivable sin, but His son teaches 'Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself' more frequently than anything. Harvey Milk was not in the pocket of any politician. He was the catalyst for this movement and what is important about the message is that it is one of civil rights, not simply gay rights. Certainly, the Briggs initiative was a direct attack on gay people in California. However, it further than that. If one, who was not gay, supported the gay woker, that individual risked losing employment as well. So prop 6 was really something out of Hitler's Germany.
It is important for people to believe that homosexuality is chosen in order to subconciously justify contempt and hatred through subjective comparison. While one may indeed choose to express their sexuality, said expression is not what defines ones sexuality, but the fundamental orientation itsself, and that orientation is not chosen, neither is it a " lifestyle" when did heterosexuals choose to be heterosexual? They never did, but they cannot ackowledge this without also acknowledging the fact that neither do homosexuals choose their sexuality, which threatens peoples subjectivly comparative sense of moral superiority.

My personal belief is that there nothing wrong with two people being in love. No one should have to fight so hard just to be treated equally. Being gay is not a threat to society, hate and discrimination, on the other hand, is. Many great people, I admire, happen to be gay. Some of the best people I count as friends, too. I never thought for a moment, oh, but they are gay...so they are less than me...NEVER! Someone asked how would I feel if my son was gay...I would feel love, he is my son.
He was so full of life. It makes my eyes water every time I watch this. But hey, sometimes, I find myself wondering what an awesome president he would have made.

I would hope he would as brave as Harvey Milk. Either way, I would be proud of him as long as he lives his life honestly, with love and kindness, I will be as proud of him as the day he was born. That would never change my love for my child.

I'm not gay but I find it disgusting that in 2011 we are not much farther evolved in our thinking about gay rights. The fear that still bleeds out with hateful words and prohibitive laws is shameful. Milk was spot on about the Gospel. So many fearful people use the Bible as a weapon to protect their ignorance and fear but have no real grasp of what it is to be and act like a Christian. God bless Harvey Milk and all the "Harvey Milks" of today and tomorrow!
@LeelooBrasil Hi Leeloo! It's interesting what you say, because as good as the movie was, it does simplify the life of Harvey Milk. He was not just a gay rights activist, he was a human rights activist, who also did tremendous things for otherminorities, senior citizens and just the city of San Francisco at large. A very complicated man, whose life, interests and scope of operations were very rich and varied.

@assindiastignani I didn't know much about Milk before the movie and yes, the movie did emphasize his LGBT activism. But I still got the impression he stood for all human rights, not just those who were members of the LGBT community. One of the first things he says in the movie is his desire to reduce the cost of public transportation in San Francisco. Affordable transportation for all is definitely NOT a purely LGBT issue.

What you advocate is to eliminate the great commission for Christians to share the gospel with sinners. Secondly, I judge actions, I don't know anyones heart, only God does. (1 Cor 2:15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments,) God defined/judged homosexuality as an abominable sin that is against Him therefore I agree with Him. @BXTALE I am religious and I think Harvey Milk knows exactly what he is talking about. God never says he hates gays, that they are committing an unforgivable sin, but His son teaches 'Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself' more frequently than anything. If your neighbor is homosexual or not does not matter, you are meant to love and respect them as you would yourself. That is what Harvey Milk is trying to say and therefore he is correct.

As far as the four corners of the earth verse goes, we do divide the earth into four hemispheres so that suggests that there are at least four sections or corners. And also it doesnt say that the angels are standing on THE four corners of the earth, it just says corners so that could be at any area in the earth representing a corner. They were holding back the winds.
Harvey Milk was not in the pocket of any politician. He was the catalyst for this movement and what is important about the message is that it is one of civil rights, not simply gay rights. Certainly, the Briggs initiative was a direct attack on gay people in California. However, it further than that. If one, who was not gay, supported the gay woker, that individual risked losing employment as well. So prop 6 was really something out of Hitler's Germany.
It is important for people to believe that homosexuality is chosen in order to subconciously justify contempt and hatred through subjective comparison. While one may indeed choose to express their sexuality, said expression is not what defines ones sexuality, but the fundamental orientation itsself, and that orientation is not chosen, neither is it a " lifestyle" when did heterosexuals choose to be heterosexual? They never did, but they cannot ackowledge this without also acknowledging the fact that neither do homosexuals choose their sexuality, which threatens peoples subjectivly comparative sense of moral superiority.

this guy is so great. I think he was an amzing spokesperson for the gay community but also just simply a great man and politician. He would have been just as interesting talking about another subject too.
