- In episode three of SHOW & TELL, MARC RIBOUD IN JAPAN, writer and photographer Stephen Leslie looks at one of his favourite photos by the great French photographer Marc Riboud and uses this as a springboard to discuss various concepts such as photographic overload, self reflexive photography and talking utter bullshit while fabricating a little known yet chilling story of photographic revenge from a posse of angry, famous Japanese photographers.
Taking in images by Riboud, Bob Collins, Martin Parr, David Solomons, Jeff Mermelstein and others, this episode is a fascinating, insightful and eventually completely preposterous look at the story behind an iconic photograph.
Please subscribe to the channel and Stephen will continue doing these films as he seeks to focus on photography content and not just which new or old camera to buy.

It's getting harder and harder to find a CZcams photography video lasting more than 10 minutes that one doesn't skip through or just stop watching before it finishes, but this one had me wishing it went on longer.
Thanks very much. Unfortunately the longer they last the longer it takes me to make them! Next one might be very short….
@@stephenlesliephoto I'll take what I can get. Looking forward to your next one, regardless of length.
I've watched all three videos this weekend. Fantastic stuff and I'm really looking forward to more. A great balance of informed opinion and dry humour. As a fellow baldy photographer you had me with the first one though. :D
Thanks very much. More to follow!
How did I miss this one! Great episode. This is an addiction. My name is Michael. I am addicted to Stephen Leslie's CZcams channel. I am not prone to telling lies. Cheers.
Thanks Mike, very glad to get you hooked. new fix might take a short while though, I'm very busy. I suggest just watching them all over again on a loop. There are hidden messages. Try playing them backwards....
This chanel is a GEM! As a bald man myself, i salute you Stephen
Thank you. I salute you back, from one bald man to another.
I love your channel. A breath of fresh air on CZcams photography
Thanks very much, that's most kind of you. Glad you're enjoying them.
I just binged watched all your vidoes. Fascinating !! keep these coming please.🙏
Thank you! Will do!
A marvellous Riboud/Japan photo on Facebook led me here and I''m very glad it did! WIll now watch all your other brilliant vids. PS the photo at 4:15 isn't Karuizawa - it's the famous giant Buddha in Kamakura. But I notice you don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Carry on! (wotta carry-on)!
Thank you very much. If you like spotting mistakes and errors then you’ll have a field day with all the other films! Hope you enjoy them all.
More than anything else photography tells lies....wonderful.
Lovely. I bought a signed silver gelatin print by Riboud in the early 1990's from Mother Jones Fund for Documentary Photography and a silver gelatin print by Sebastio Salgado which the man personally inscribed for me once over a beer. as I recall the prints cost me about 2 weeks worth of wages but why pay your rent when you can support Documentary photography and get something rare and special printed by hand in a wet darkroom rather than spit out by inkjet. The print of Riboud's you may ask. Beijing 1965 of street scene framed from inside of a store looking out. You used it in this episode. Thank you Stephen, I look forward to your channel and have enjoyed everyone I watched. BTW you look good in a beret mate :)
That’s a great print to own, Riboud knew what he was doing. Although I don’t think I have ever knowingly worn a beret??? Wigs, yes and other types of hat but a beret??
Another great one. Sebastiao Salgado at some later date? If for no other reason that his series on miners jumped in front of my eyes as I first saw Riboud’s composition. Hardly street photography, I realize….
and he continues continuing, thank you!
I will have to stop sometime….
Brilliant!!! I am enjoying very much your channel!!! Congrats!
Great. Please don't stop!
Thanks. I will not stop. Ever.
And I forgot to say how much I appreciate that Riboud photo from the model shoot. Amazing.
Looking forward to next one.
Me too....it's taking a while but hopefully will be there soon. Thanks for watching.
Hey Stephen, Great new channel. Hope your well and pleased to see my Sparks book increasing in value ! Love Marc Riboud one of my fav layered pictures was the one taken thru the windows in china . All the best. Mark
Thanks Mark, glad you're enjoying them. More to come (and hopefully another book soon too.....)
Brilliant vid , that Riboud pic is def worthy of its own story.
Great series, I hang on every true word spoken...
Thank you very much, although I really wouldn’t advise hanging on my every word! You could end up falling in to a chasm of utter nonsense!
Another belting Show and Tell mate thanks so much for producing , have a great weekend ... daido moriyama Would be a good one :)
Stephen, I find myself cracking up over the humor you inject into every episode. It pairs nicely with the excellent research you put into bringing your subjects to life. Keep on.
Thank you very much indeed, that's always good to hear and I will keep on. Just have to tend to real life for a bit but other, new episodes will be forthcoming forthwith-ish. All the best.
Very Interesting article 👍 👏 👌 😀
really fun and educational video!
Brilliant. I know making these are hard work. Well done
Thanks very much. Hard work but fun.
Brilliant! Great series Thanks for sharing! I really appreciate Riboud's work.
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching.
Speaking of French photographers , how’s about a deep dive on Robert Doisneau?
Love your insight, wit & clarity
Keep it up
Thanks
Maybe, there's certainly a lot more to him than that overly famous kiss photo. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add him to the list. Stay tuned for more......
these are great! I’m really enjoying your lo-fi, no bullshit, interesting and entertaining takes on photography
Lo-fi? Do you have any idea how long they take to make??? (Glad you like them though, more to come)
@@stephenlesliephoto no disrespect intended-it’s clear you put a lot of effort and time into your videos. I’m just a fan of the editing, graphics, presentation-the whole package.
I’m not offended, just pulling your leg. I appreciate the appreciation.
You're right, addictions can be dangerous so I think I will reconsider watching your channel. :)
I’ll take that as a compliment. Some addictions are more harmful than others, surely??
Amazing. The photographic content we deserve.
But what have you done to deserve this? I want details….
Brilliant story!!!
Thanks.
Excellent work! Thank you for the humor, and the knowledge…
Glad you enjoyed it! More to come.
Thank you for another entertaining and interesting video, your presenting style is 👍
A very seductive series, Hen Step. Will continue to watch. Of course, eventually I expect to see you in the confessional, so expect a heavy penance, as there are lies, damn lies and storytellers.
I make no apologies. Glad you like them.
Very interesting angle on photography there Stephen . Thank you ...and you're right about telling lies !! as one of those photos of Riboud in his later years was in China not Japan l and also Zhang Yimou -the famous Director of Raise the Red Lantern and Heros etc. was there with him....thought it's worth a mention.
Well spotted Alan, although I think I said that the Japanese photographers chased poor Riboud all around the world, hounding him wherever he went. So it's perfectly possible they could have pursued him to China when he was with Zhang Yimou too! Or maybe not? Glad you enjoyed it. More to follow, please subscribe, tell all your friends etc etc...
@@stephenlesliephoto I did subscribe...but like I said you've got a fresh approach to photography shows which is Gr8 !! as most photographers take themselves too seriously like Ansel Adams .....I used to get so confused with his rigid Zone system ...🙃.....and so did the Tutor !!
Wow. Thank you for this. Marc Riboud is one of my favorite photojournalist 🙂
Thanks, then I hope you don’t find this offensive!
@@stephenlesliephoto great video 📷
Really good!
Thanks Bouwe! More to follow soon I hope….
Awesome video! Subscribed!
Thanks very much. Welcome!
Do one on Jeff Merm’-ASAP!
I’m working out a plan. Will take a while.
how did you come across that old pentax advert 😂
Lots and lots of research!
Anybody else know why Patrick Stewart keeps appearing in my recommendations?
I’ll take that. If I’ve understood you correctly?
@@stephenlesliephoto was being cheeky from underneath the safety of my baseball cap! Enjoying videos, breath of fresh air with humour and not talking about the tech!
He really did have a fine head of hair.
Didn't he just? Infuriating.
The bastard
".... and let me know what else you would like me to talk about." Larry Burrows?
Thanks for the suggestion. I am trying to figure out how to do a show about war photography, although the challenge (for me) is how the hell to also include some jokes?!? As soon as I crack that conundrum then maybe I can tackle Burrows and some others. Stay tuned....
Mermlestein would be great - can’t afford to buy sidewalk! You’ve also mentioned head hair but perhaps the episode could venture into facial hair too 🤔 the man with a book in his mouth has a big tache i think …
Moustaches and beards is on the list. Sidewalk is one of my favourite books of all time.
Can you do a video on the new Hasselblad camera? I’m not sure what it’s called but I know I can't afford it.
No. No gear talk. Ever.
@@stephenlesliephoto Just testing you.
Didn't realise how many of his images I was aware of without know they were his. Great analysis. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. He was absolutely amazing.
Where have you been all my life
South East London?
🤣🤣🤣
What a pile of rubbish, what were you waffling on about.... Only joking that was brilliant, but I needed to get your attention cos you're great and I'm bald.
I probably could do with a bit more criticism to be honest. Pity you liked it, maybe you'll genuinely dislike the next one and then can have a legitimate go at me? We shall see.....
A hat might encourage some critique
