This guy is the best reviewer on CZcams. He could have his own TV show. A true natural in front of the camera.
I hope you are sharing whatever it is you are smoking. It must be fantastic.
His voice is so soothing
@@JoeMarauder-xk6wj its the guy on the video on his alt account..
Thanks Captain Obvious!! 😆
Does anyone else feel weird when they see a Gibson with dot inlays? The blocks are so iconic to me
Great explanation of the SG Modern neck. I didn't know they were asymmetrical! Great video!
Thanks Justin. I always love your videos!
Thanks Daniel!
Really cool video. Definitely the best of its kind on youtube.
Thanks Michael!!
Nice show and tell Justin; learned a lot while awaiting my own sg standard.
This was incredibly helpful. Fantastic review, Justin!!
Thanks very much for watching!
Thank you very much for the very informative video.
You're welcome!
A perfect review👍 Thank you 🙏🌟🤟
Very informative for the prospective buyer. Would love to see the Epiphone review as well!
Great rundown! I'd add that the '61 SG is also handwired and comes with a hardshell case while the regular SG Standard is PCB and comes with a soft case/gig bag. I have the '61, the regular Standard and the Special. If I could only keep one, I'd keep the '61.
Amazing video. 👍👍👍
Thank you!
good job matheus asato
Great video, I like the way you do it, you play songs everybody knows and not just play for nuts.
Finally, Sg vs Sg vs Sg
Amazing video ! Great sound quality. I'm so glad i purchased an SG Junior since they are out of production now. I really love mine !
Thanks very much Robin! SG Juniors are really cool guitars, we hope to see them come back into the lineup.
THANX FOR THE CUSTOM SHOP REVIEW. STAY COOL... PEACE...
SG,s with P90s are a secret weapon
Every single one. Thank you
We can't argue with that!
Already got two from you dudes (best music store ever), but damn that TV Yellow one is hawt. Rock on.
Thanks! Yes we agree, such a beautiful guitar!
I own the SG Special with P90 in the same color ( ebony ) and it sounds incredible, it also looks amazing. The best SG Gibson makes and also the cheapest. A Super SG.
Very nice!
Love that Murphy Lab! I do own one, and it is the greatest SG I own. Awesome review! Love the comparison between the different models.🎸
Great video! Never was attracted to SG's, more 50s Les Paul guy, but recently tried Murphy Lab SG ...and my God it was amazing !
Made up my mind and ordered a Gibson 61 Standard today
Fantastic, congrats!
Congrats! I bought one of the 61's in silver mist a few months ago. It's an amazing guitar and IMO so much better than the regular Standard with the big batwing guard.
I got my standard 61 last week, tobacco sunburst
61 SG looks and sounds BAAAAADDDDDD that would be my choice👍👍
my choice too.
I have one of the new 61's in silver mist... IMO, it slays the regular SG standard with the large batwing pickguard (which I also own). The 60's burstbuckers cut so much better than the 490's and it's all handwired (not PCB like the regular Standard). Love the neck profile (not too thin) and think the small pickguard looks classier than the big batwing. Also comes with a hardshell case, so it's basically the same price as the regular Standard if you wanted to buy a hardshell case for it.
the Man did not go over the differences between P-90's 490's, '57's, '61's or Burstbucker Pro's....they are the most important differences between these guitars !
He may not have verbalized the differences, because it's strange to describe the nuanced differences between pickups in words. Instead, he played clean and dirty examples on all different pickups so that you can hear the actual differences between them, rather than relying on his dictated interpretation.
The only difference!
If you play rock n roll, you need an SG.
I like the special with P-90’s, but there was a ‘62 Les Paul (SG) in the family, that I played for my first show in high school.
I have a white/white ‘61 Les Paul reissue Epiphone “Custom Shop” SG that I absolutely love. I think it’s an ‘08?
I did swap-out the pups for ‘57 Classics and had a great tech set it up.
Really great in depth review of a plethora of SGs! Nice work highlighting a lot of the specs between the models. The one thing that sticks out it was overlooked is the differences in neck heel construction between the tribute (not featured here) and current standard models and the special, 61, custom. I’m lucky enough to own two SGs and this construction makes a big difference and how these guitar feel up the neck. Again, nice review and I hope it helps you guys sell some guitars!
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. We didn't note the differences in neck heel construction of the Tribute because the Tribute is a discontinued model and we only focused on the current 2024 models. To discuss other obsolete models would have made the video prohibitively long.
When I buy guitars the very first thing I check is weight and balance (both sitting and standing with a strap). Comfort is really important to me. Given that SG's have a bad rep for neck-dive, I would really have liked to see how each of these model's fare. And yes - it would be really good to do a session on Epi's. Maybe LTDs too. A simple spreadsheet would be awsome. One row for each guitar, and columns for price, weight, balance, PU, etc ... So you could see all the important things at once.
5:40 My favorite of all... The SG Special. Just listen to Pete Townshend from 1968 through 1973 (when he played a white one for some of the the Quadrophenia shows). But, especially "Live at Leeds" and at Woodstock and you will hear the greatest guitar tone ever recorded. I have an SG special as well as a Les Paul Jr. double cut and of the many guitars I own, some of which are way too expensive, these are my all time favorites. Nothing, but nothing sounds as incredible or defines Classic Rock as one of these with the greatest pickups ever made. The Gibson P90 pickup. Fantastic video my friend !!! Just gave it a thumbs up and subscribed! 🎸
I started playing in 1980. Never had *any* interest in an SG until about a year ago. Thought they were ugly, primitive, and reminded me of the high school burnouts and their dirty Sabbath T-shirts. But, I bought the cherry ‘61 Reissue with Vibrola last month, largely because of a growing Gibson love…. Even though it has a 60s ‘slim’ neck and I have big hands and have been skewing toward really, really fat necks over the past five years… I absolutely love this guitar. It is now my favorite to play. A crazy turnaround. // Wish I could have afforded the Murphy Pelham Blue-that’s a stunner. And I wish the tv yellow were available with the Vibrola at the Standard price…. Oh, well-I’ll just have to leave my Cherry in the sun and hope it fades before I die…. About the Vibrola-I got it for the aesthetic. With the hope that it wouldn’t be a problem, with regard to tuning stability. I don’t use it much, and the guitar was set up with tuning in mind, and it has been fantastic. Even more stable than my Les Paul. My next guitar will probably be an SG with P-90s….
Amazing!
Just got the same one and I agree wish it came in more colours . 1 choice of colour only… lucky the cherry is kinda nice . Though I reckon I may have gone for the tv yellow too if offered. I might consider a respray in future for a more unique look. It’s an awesome guitar with stable tuning if setup and strung properly.
@@globalnova I got the SG lust from seeing one in TV Yellow in a Gibson Factory Tour video. It was just a husk-body and neck, but for whatever reason i just loved that 'yellow wood.' I was on the line with my salesman to buy the Standard in TV Yellow, but pulled back and re-evaluated. Kept looking at pix, and something about the SGs without the Vibrolas can sometimes look 'off.' Like, there's too much space under the bridge. I only feel that way with certain colors, though. I'm odd. I'm a designer, and i get *very* particular about strange particulars.... Somehow, having always 'hated' a red+black combination, i then pivoted toward it. That still baffles me.... I'm still trying to get used to my cherry, as it's *soooo* red, but i'm getting there. Still love this guitar. Which is also very *weird.* If you told me three years ago (or 40 years ago) that i would own an SG, and that it would become my favorite thing to play... i might have slapped you and run away.
@@globalnova You're right, the '61 Standard Faded in a matte finish translucent TV Yellow would be a STUNNER!
Thaught : oh, Mateus Asato.. new video.. nice 😂 turns out its Justin
Awesome videos!!! 🎉
Thanks
Hi! I'm Paolo from Italy! With your beautiful and precise reviews you have confirmed my love for Gibson! Another brand that I love is Paul Reed Smith... what making some videos about that? (forgive my english... io parlo italiano/je parle francais) thanks
Great review. I have owned probably 5 S.G. Recently purchased a brand new standard. I will say that Gibson quality control rumors proved true. Finish was flawless. Frets were PERFECT. Controls were loose. Intonation was out by a lot. 2 tuners weren't tightened properly. Once those (to me, minor issues" were corrected, it became my favorite. Even over my vintage S.G.s I owned. Personally, i have never purchased a new guitar i didnt need to set up anyways. Yes, its frustrating paying a U.S.A. made premium and having any issues at all,but... In my opinion is totally worth the minor inconvenience of a complete setup. Epi's have gotten really good! But their prices have increased dramatically. Getting a Epi with U.S. pickups and similar specs isnt THAT much cheaper. And Personally, i like the nitro Finish on the U.S. model's. In general, the U.S. models compared to Epiphone, is in fact better. Ive played many examples of both. Just understand, you may have minor quality control issues. Gibson just had access to the best wood on the planet. For a brand new guitar, my new standard resonates and rings like a bell. Its THAT good!
Great video! I have many SG's.....Gibson, Epiphone, Kay, Xaviere, and Austin. I love all of my SG's.....I really like the Gibson SG Jr. I have a unique Epiphone Gibson Custom Shop 1961 Les Paul (SG) that is full GLOSS (not sure how that came about....it was only suppose to come in the vintage matte style finish) and someone added a maestro vibrola to it as well. It feels, sounds, and plays AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
Wow, quite the collection!!
Great video, I love SG’s and I never realized the modern didn’t have the fret nibs ( Don’t own a modern ), I guess it’s an easier job if you’re ever going to do a refret on it as well. The Custom is just a work of art, gorgeous axe 🤙
Thanks for your review.
Right on!
İt is also notable that this current run of specials has a bound fretboard and the standard tuning nobs. This is not traditional but still beautiful 😊
This was really cool to watch. I have a 1986 Gibson Les Paul custom SG three pickups gold hardware I bought in 1989 when I was 18. I guess I was lucky, I got it for $550. It was a cream or ivory color that turned yellow over the years. I replaced the Kluson tuners with gold Grovers because the Klusons just wore out. You can really see the difference in color of the guitar from the tuner change. Not quite as much as back then, but you can still see it. Been my main ever since. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul to try to not beat on my Gibson, but it just wasn't the same and played the Gibson all the time anyway. I would love to get another SG. But I want a burst Les Paul in the worst way too. An R9 would be nice, but those prices are a bit out of my range at the moment. For now I have an awesome Gibson with the Tim Shaw pickups.
Love these videos but now I have more guitars I need to buy😁
Thank you! Funny how that works...
"Satan's Guitar"...dollar for dollar, pound for pound the most beautiful and best electric guitar in the world. The new '61 RI is the best one I ever played. And yes, I hurried and bought the Aged Cherry model and still can't put it down. It's a beast.
The TV Yellow 61 sounded really good
Thanks now i know which one I want. I was wondering what all the difference was. 😊
Amazing! We are glad to have helped clear things up for you!
Awesome video!
If you could do the Epiphone SG lineup as well, that’d be great!
Cheers!
Thanks! Noted, we'll add it to the list of video ideas!
On the maestro vibrola…I’ve often wondered how Frank Marino is able to dive bomb as he does. I’ve never tried one but very curious…. Great video!
That supreme :D oh mamma
No SG Classic? Picked up a 2007 with p90s. Great guitar. I’m guessing the biggest diff is binding on the neck? Compared to a special?
What amp are you using?
I rented a low tier SG from L&M but the fretboard edges were so sharp they would cut my fingers. I checked out some higher tier at their shop and they had the same problem.
I noticed the strap button on the horn of the Supreme. Is it also on the back behind the neck like others?
Good eye! No, there is no strap button on the back near the neck joint like the others, it's only on the horn.
My SG has 2 P-90's in it. Love P-90's.
Would love an Epiphone overview, too.
One question that you might be able answer... How does the neck thickness compare to the 61 and Standard?
No Juniors? 5yrs ago my first SG was a Gibson offspring Maestro Junior that got upgraded instantly. It had an already hot humbucker but I swapped it for a Dimarzio X2N. It's been out of commission for a while so now it's getting a P90 makeover in a true Junior fashion but as for actual Gibson SGs, I'm coming to try em out and get my mind blown away!
No Juniors in this video because we focused only on current models in the lineup. The SG Junior has been discontinued. Absolutely come in and try them all!!
I clicked because I thought Mateus Asato was the reviewer. Great review though!
We'll try to get him in for our next video. 🤣
Would love to see the Epiphone lineup!
Ive wanted a gibson sg since i started playing. Wont ever have though cuz cantvafford one 😮
i like sgs i would buy all
Great video and tribute to the SG…and uh, speaking about Tribute, what about the Tribute?
Thanks very much! The SG Tribute has been discontinued, so for the sake of brevity (yet still resulting in a 45 minute video!), we only featured current models in the 2024 lineup.
The Tribute is the entry level SG. After that comes the Special.
The Tribute is discontinued in our system and will soon be unavailable for purchase. In the interest of the longevity of the video, we didn't want to include a model that wouldn't be available to buy.
Just put an SG standard on layaway. Should be picking it up in a month or two. Will be my first Gibson after craving for the past few years. Never liked Gibson before hand, always been a Fender guy.
Which song is he playing at 15:26 ??
Black Sabbath - Snowblind
The vibrato, even on the super expensive Murphy Lab, knocks the guitar out of tune as soon as one uses it.
The SG that you can afford :D.
Give me the blueberry burst that guitar is Awesome
Why no SG Junior ? Thats my Fav one !!
The SG Junior is fantastic! Or, was? 😥 The SG Junior was discontinued in 2021 and we only focused on the current models available in 2024 for this video.
SG 61 re_issue(not 61 standard) the best SG outside custom shop
SG!!!!
Correct!
When your budget is somewhat limited, the Special is a great ... sustitute (Ba-dum, TSSS!) for a Standard.
Vous devriez faire essayer les guitares blindfold en magasin😃🤘
S g .. sharp girl.
Sg special the simplest? What about sg junior bro???
The SG Junior is obsolete bro! We only looked at current models.
I wish they’d make a SG for tall people with big hands, like they made a Les Paul slightly bigger for buckethead. I like the sound but when I grab the SG of a friend it feels like a toy and it looks like I’m playing an ukulele
When any of us get to Buckethead's level, Gibson will make us a slightly bigger SG for us too. 😆
@@longandmcquade I won’t live long enough to reach that level😉
Is the out of tune sound part of the ‘61 intentionally because it sounds kind of authentic to the era?
It's not intentionally out of tune, but intentionally drop-tuned. It's in drop C# which is authentic to the Black Sabbath song Justin is playing.
@@longandmcquade it sounds out of tune to me, maybe the intonation is off or its because of the low string tension? Kind of suits that black sabbath sound though.
@@matt926uk1 The ascending arpeggios do sound a bit out of tune on the high strings, and yes the strings are a bit floppier than they would be with standard tuning. It does suit the sound though! It sounded right to us in the studio, so we rolled with it. Just how Tony would have back in the day. 😉
@@longandmcquade it does sound cool, and captures Tony’s sound. I just wondered if you was tuning slightly out to get that effect. I don’t think it would sound as authentic if everything was perfectly in tune. I have a guitar in drop c# but I’m using heavier gauge strings and it sounds good but I guess those light strings are part of why black sabbath sounded the way they do.
Pelham with a vibrola.
Am I the only one that thought 💭 he was Mateus Asato at first?
Nope. That's probably the most popular comment on this video!
I thought the Tribute was the entry point SG
You are correct, it was. However the SG Tribute is now discontinued in our system, so we didn't want to feature a guitar that will soon be unavailable to purchase.
@@longandmcquade Oh Ok , I didn’t know they were becoming extinct.Glad I bought one.
my dream guitar was an SG, so i bought a 61 reissue, worse guitar i ever owned, tuning nightmare, tried everything, it just wouldn't stay in tune. i traded it for a strat and never looked back. i've seen the SG for sale about 4 times since.
Telecasters next?!
Yes. Get subscribed. Coming out this August.
EDIT: Actually, we lied. It isn't next, we have another lineup coming out before Teles. But Tele vs Tele... coming out in August during our Fender Month promo!
@@longandmcquade Subscribed! Looking forward to it. Great video!
You left out the SG Jr
Which ones smell like cherries???????
Don't want to brag but without even watching this video I knew the SG would sound the best
That's quite the talent!!
Les Pauls are uncomfortable boat anchors.
Totally disagree about the pick guard not making difference. The bridge pickup is angled better with the strings with pickup rings and they only come with the half pick guard.
That is a great point, and something I admit to overlooking in this video. Good catch!
Awefull distortion sound, grunge is long gone :-)
definetly epiphone SG reviews.
We'll definitely tackle the Epis in a future video!
If u want the ultimate SG, get a vintage one from late 70's
My only suggestion for your sound demos would be to play some single note riffs or licks so we could hear what pieces of solos will sound like.
NONE! Gibson's prices are batshit insane!
Seems a wasted opportunity for a real pickup/tone comparison.... Why not play the same lick via the same amp/fx in the same positions?
This was great except for all the “tonewood” nonsense. Please, let that BS die!
Don’t buy any of the newer ones -all junk- do yourself a favor buy a 73-to 77-78mat latest…that’s a real sg that’s still affordable
"A real S.G." lmao
😂😂😂 Yea you’re crazy AF
This vintage tuning is ridiculous. Things change by time naturaly. The character comes by the time you spend with the instrument, not from the factory that gives the illusion of character, but is a fake in the end. I would never buy it 😖
nobody cares
@@freezeframeplease I do 🤘
No way on any GIBSON i have three high end 2021 Epiphone modern figured Sgs ill stay with them and you can keep your GIBSON
non of them
Pick guards are more then visual. The batwing has more wood cut away under it. The teardrop has less wood removed. All other things being equal the tear drop will sit better on the strap and possibly resonate a bit different.
CS murphy lab better
Buy a 73 to 76 not the new junk
