One Foot in the Grave is the PERFECT sitcom. Richard Wilson actually HATES it when people come up to him and say the catchphrase so it was a huge deal for him to agree to play this scene.
The scene with Mrs Doyle and her friend saying "no, I'll pay" became our catchphrase as friends whenever we went out to lunch or dinner. Of course you really wanted to lose, but you also didn't lol.

Noteworthy scenes by great actors were the Meldrews lost son in Timeless Time, Nick Swainey's loneliness (the episode escapes me), the death of Margaret's Mum in The Pit and the Pendulum and the death of Albert in Who Will Buy.

One Foot in the Grave is classic British comedy. You have 2 great Fr Ted episodes to go. The reason why Fr Ted didn't air in the States is because, TV stations in America didn't get Irish, Satire comedy. In Ireland, Fr Ted is so woven into societies fabric, if you say 1 line from Fr Ted, instantly the next person you're talking to gets it, and has another Fr Ted quote to reply. It's class.

Worth adding that it was extremely popular in the 90's, with ratings as high as 18 million in the UK (according to Google; though the official ratings are only available for the last series which peaked at 12 million). So the show was incredibly well known to the British audience.
Less important is that it was remade for America, where it was retitled as Cosby (1996-2000). Though from what little I've seen of 'Cosby' the two shows ended up vastly different.

Basically, One Foot in the Grave is about a guy who has retired and is a miserable old thing that is always complaining about something. Usually things like people dropping trash on his front lawn or poor customer service or something and his response is often ridiculously over the top like if someone drops their candy bar wrappers on his lawn, he will pick them up, go to their house, and put the trash through the mail slot in the front door.

12:10 Onward. This is a very middle-aged Irish lady thing to do. My aunt and mum were exactly like this. Arguing over who was paying for the lunch. My mum even tries this with my grown-a*s self. Father Ted, being a very surreal show, takes this to its extreme.

Think they already did the next one in the series as their streaming site got the eps in the wrong order without the Boomers knowing until we pointed it out.

I don't believe it is a catch phrase from the British comedy One Foot In The Grave staring Richard Wilson as Victor Meldrew, the joke is that when they meet Meldrew at Ailwee
caves and use the phrase, he becomes incensed, because people always approach him and think it will be funny to say it

I feel like a reaction to an episode of One Foot in the Grave is in order...
Also, if you were to look at that era and style of British comedy, then an episode of Keeping Up Appearances would be great 😂

Went to Ailwee cave with my school back in the mid 80's, all i can remember is something about Bear bones and the fact that they turn off the fuking lights.

Lol I'm so with the Queen about two old lady friends paying! I work in a bakery and it happens all the time! They argue as they race to pull their cards/cash out of their bags! I just tell them "whoever finds it first pays" 🤣 It always reminds me of this episode with Mrs Doyle and her friends!
