Mike Stroud and Evan Mast are then men behind Ratatat, one of electronic musics rising stars. The duos chest-pounding instrumentals and innovative hip-hop remixes have earned them serious credibility and fans in high places. Shortly after the groups formation they were signed to XL records and have toured with the likes of Daft Punk, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand and Bjork.
In this episode of Rehearsal Space Mike and Evan talk about the serendipity of their success and how their music always sounds like a really bad idea on paper. They delve into their creative process, sharing a few tips for innovative sounds and stress the importance of never losing your original musical intent.

Ive been listening to Ratatat for about 17 years okay. I dont listen to their stuff anymore I just kick it from my head. you know what im saying? i can do that. No disrespect, but thats how I am.
I'm not experienced enough to understand this. Will be back.
@@aryanyeoh2606 Its the excerpt lyrics of the song Seventeen Years that they made back during 2004. He just change up the first and second sentence from 'I've been rapping for about 17 years, OK?' to that, then 'I don't write those stuff anymore.' to that, also.
this comment is true for me now
I feel like once you discover Ratatat, you can never let them go.
12 years later, how's this comment aging on your end?
@@stevelethal2910🤘🏻 Been listening to these boys since maybe 13-14, I’m 24 now. Love these guys
Dude they are blazed out of there mind.
Their*
@@oskarbjornstad877 is it not they're*
@@Idolikethis no it is indeed not
They were really calm for how animated their music is
Their humbleness makes the music even more special
I'm very pleased that they let their music do its own talking. I mean clearly I came here for an interview, but I think this is what I really wanted.
First time seeing these guys. After hearing their stuff for a little over a year, they are pretty much like I thought they would be. Love these dudes.
Music that remind me a lot when i was teenager. Thrilled me so much. Recovering this 10 years later is pure émotion melted with so much admiration. Pure adrenaline
Ditto. Hit me in the feels that this video was released 15 years ago. Feels like I just watched this for the first time a few years ago. Time is wild.
Total flashback to my highschool days
they're so quiet/high/amazing/soft spoken/talented/original.
there's a difference between listening to them on your laptop/ CD and hearing them live. their live performances are INSANEEEE
i had almost forgotten how much i love ratatat...
Vetne it's been 6 years since you had almost forgotten how much you love Ratatat. Have you forgotten again yet??
They are BOMB on stage man.. what a performance they do.. but no one ever hears them talk at all.. great video!
i love seeing how awkward musicians can be. They're so clearly genius in their own right. Like he said, you don't need to describe it in words. let the music speak for itself
These two are just HIGH as fuck 😂😂😂😂
@@southblogstv HAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHA
0:01 - Shiller, 0:19 - Mumtaz Khan, 1:50 - Mirando, 2:53 - Brulee, 4:37 - Imperials, 5:28 - Cherry =D
You are a legend for doing this! Thank you!
These guys are amazing. Cool to see how humble they are.
Great video! Ratatat is nothing short of amazing!
Waiting for them to come around.
These guys are GENIUS!
Daaaamn....i mean daaaaaamn.. you know what im saying?...like...daaaaaaaammnn

Their music is so amazing. I'm in love with them.
I’ve been living for about 35 years ok.. and these guys are in my top 3 favorite bands.
I never comment youtube videos, but this will be the exception.
THEY ARE GENIUS
I've been listening to their music for like 7 years now omg???
10 now buddy
@@TheGuizmo11More like 14 now
these guys are a whole new kind of amazing live.
"i guess we have to make an album and make this into a band..." aww do we have to? haha! these are the most chill guys ever.
Much thanks for the Up!
These guys r so chill.
i smiled while watching this whole thing just cause of there shyness and their subtle jokes throughout.
Hey I saw them also yesterday live in Nijmegen (Nederlands). It was awesome, amazing and great ! I want to see them again, really nice !!
lovely lovely lovely indeed.
Listening to them is as nice and calming, as listening to their wonderful music.
Wow this video is 15 years! I describe their sound as pure awesomeness
I never really like my name untill i found Evan mast
Love these guys
@SystematicSequence It's called Mumtaz Khan, it's on the album LP3.
saw them in groningen yesterday too :)
brilliant show
They seem very modest. Very cool.
This is so dope. I relate to their creation process in so many ways.
Thanks ratatat for your new fantastic music.
Come in Italy!
same here, so calming. :)
Dude, sooo chilll.
love your work!
@321Green1Fork123 ..Yea I mean for me it started with "17 Years"..and then I bought Classics and fell in love with every song on that album. And now I listen to all their albums, my favorite is "Cherry", that song is amazing!
"the recording process is the writing process"
Exactly how I make my music , but they are so much better at it haha
Damn. I'd love to come up with a new song with them. That would be pretty sick.
classics is and will always be their best album.
@Cornbreadddd its the spoken intro to the song "17 years" lol, yes i know they are not that old
You cannot describe Ratatat, Ratatat describes you!
Wait a minute... So on Rehearsal Space, they don't show the band rehearsing??
good interview
@185niteowl the song playing at the end is "cherry" from "ratatat"
thanks!
Cherry; happens to be a personal fav of mine
i want some of what they're smokin
PLEASE COME AGAIN TO MALAYSIA, I BEG OF YOU GUYZ
@NewBoomBox I just saw them live for the second time in my life. FUCKING EPIC AMAZINGNESS. BEST CONCERT IVEEVER BEEN TO
@fagag220 The song after mirando is called Brulee. It's one of my personal favorites and one of their best I think.
Ratatat is their own genre. Their sound is so easy to pick out because it's the only sound like that out there.
@fagag220 Song 1 is the intro to shiller. The second song is called mumtaz khan.
@FortKnoxMusic lol its the spoken intro to the song "17 years"
Yes, that's what I was looking for. All I wanna see about my favourite electric music composers is just that: both of them on drugs. All the times on drugs. Like me: on drugs.
2 lovely stoners - their music recordings are prob the most freshest thing i have heard in a long time xxx
high and rockin' out!
What sets Ratatat away from other electronic bands for me, is they have a classical style, and how they can make each song have a different feel to their songs also a big plus for me is that they do not have the cookie cutter sound other electronic bands follow
theyre soooo high.
when they say that they do the "backwards guitar" effect, what songs are they talking about.
i was thinking falcon jab but what is it really
hm yes i know they have that sound a lot yes i agree but i'm wondering is their usual sound
Them playing the guitar sound normally then digitally flipping the sound so it is backwards?
I like their philosophy with how they like to record and play.
these guys are chill as fuck
@dladelph The last song is called cherry it's off their first album.
@riopieboy
i agree, playing leads over there songs is fun.
especially when baked. with or without an instrument.
flippin sick
Anyone know the name of the song that starts playing at 0:19?
@pootinhammer Question: are those the only Ratatat lyrics?
yeah ratatat is awesome. i like how they dont like to define there music. you can hear that. cant wait to see them next month!
@PrincipalSk1nner Mirando it's on the album LP3
chill dudes
Help! I’ve been trying to find a Ratatat video of ladies in an apartment, trying on vintage clothing, OD’d and turned into giant bird. I don’t know song name and NEED this video in my life again. Name of song? And did the video get pulled? Thx
they were si high during the interwiev :D
hehy whats the song that starts the interview out?
I admire your attempt but this comment has all the thumbs up for a reason...people understood that I was just replacing words from the spoken intro to the song "17 years" by Ratatat sooo....it appears it is your battleship that has been sunk :-)
wats that beat on 1:48 need to know please help..
@PraterBoyJohn whats the last song called?!
THEY ARE FUCKING GODS OF GODS ON STAGE. SEEN THEM TWICE, HONESTLY TWO BEST SHOWS THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO.
When were they in Houston last?! I want to see these guy so fucking bad!
@LightzenoLZ i shoulda thought of that, i was wondering why they seemed so awkward.
@unabomberman i was kidding. replacing words from the intro to the song "17 years"
@kpeacesmith absolutely
hey whats the song that starts around 4:42
perfect amount of likes!!
Yes I'll agree on the weird musicians thing..anyway. What they are saying at the end re affirms what I think when I hear their music is that it is music in one of its purest forms. They let the music take them on weird journey, dont spend too much technical time on it (just let it come out) and just entertain yourself and everyone else will come for the ride. Dont try to categorize it etc. Genius
pretty much every song off their first two albums uses this, cherry probably does it the most. its less prevalent on LP3 but its still there like in falcon jab and bird priest.
hip hop remix album is sick!
whoa wat is the instrument at 1:27?!?!
@bcxangel , he refers to one of the songs..
@shredheadbob I see a lot of shows and festivals, and the Ratatat show I saw in Toronto remains one of the best live performances I've ever seen - you're flat wrong.
whats the song playing at like 3:40
Mirando, its on lp3
I'll be extremely appreciative If we have the chance to talk in person.
These guys smoked all the weed. But that's cool, I would too if I made ratatat music for a living
