  • Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG that launched August 28th in 2012 (25th with 3 day headstart) and is celebrating its 10th anniversary. With the Steam release and the celebration, I wanted to take this opportunity and take a step back and focus on why I love this game so much. Starting with a brief history of the long wait of 5 years before the game actually released and then talking about the 3 things that make this game so special to me.
    "What I Love About..." is a video series heavily indulging in nostalgia. Focusing mainly on why a game is particularly amazing to me. Blending personal stories, highlights and facts to take you on a trip down memory lane.

    What is your favorite GW2 memory?
    I’ve been away from CZcams for a while but I really wanted to at least make a video for the 10th anniversary. Absolutely crazy that the game has been out for that long already. I feel like it was yesterday when I logged in for the very first time.
    EDIT:
    This video was supposed to go up the 25th because that’s when the headstart launch was 10 years ago. I was pretty surprised to see the anniversary gift in my mailbox this morning :D
    I guess Guild Wars 2 is not using actual dates for the birthday gifts and instead just counts to 365 days every year and with 2 leap years in between, it would explain the early gift. So instead, I decided to release the video already. Happy anniversary and happy steam launch!

      True, a year - A revolution around the sun - Is actually 365.25 days approx, so leap years happen and matter!
      But I think they just like to do patches on Tuesdays. 😅

    The best things about GW2 is it respects your time, there is no constant vertical progression, your gear isn't outdated or screwed around with constantly, there is no Sub Fee (!!!), and it keeps expanding even between expansions!!

    10 years , 9 of those 10 guild leader , so many memories, met so many people and while as a guild we exist more like a social hub , still playing .Started playing when i was 21 years old...now I'm 31....puts things a bit in perspective.

      Damn 9 years of leading a guild, that seems crazy to me. Super cool that you managed to keep people around for that long, nomatter in what form!
      We tried to make our own guild at launch as well but it requires so much dedication haha

      @@MasterOfNoneGaming I remember many years ago having to work in another country and i had to live in the same room with someone else, i was using the laptop i had at that time to play and try to not make any noise during the night, to the times i was working again in another country while coming back home during the weekend, carrying my big PC around xD , sweet sweet memories.

    I loved the pvp jumping puzzle area. It was a lot of fun. My favorite thing though were the big pvp battles and the fun class dynamics. There was a lot of fun things in general in Guild Wars 2, I should really play the game again someday.

      @@MasterOfNoneGaming I stopped to play Warlords of Draenor and then resumed afterwards for a while then went over to play FFXIV a realm reborn, and then played the new content in WoW:Legion till I max leveled and found they ruined PVP then went back to Final Fantasy XIV.
      I've been jumping back and forth between those three for a while.

    jumping puzzles in WvW was nostalgic and Jumping puzzles in general were nice, HoT was very cool expansion as Gw1 player, HoT was very nice to experience as mounts were never apart of this expansion and it would require moving around the maps , exploring, finding hidden treasure, had so many good gw1 asthetics to it.

    In my case it's weird. I've tried WoW and I've loved the experience. I'm a solo player most of the time, still I had a really good time leveling my char and every now and then talking to other people, I've even made some friends, but never got into a guild because I don't play long enough for them. To me it can be fine to play the game just one month a year.
    Then there are these game design decisions, that really get in my way when playing WoW solo. The gear treadmill, even the fact that you can only experience the story and end game content when playing frequently with other players makes it kinda "not the game for me".
    At the moment I'm trying Guild Wars 2 again and I love the horizontal progression and all these kinds of different game design decisions, BUT there are two things I really preferred in WoW, that is 1. the art style, which is so iconic and makes me always wanting to come back to that game and 2. the overall leveling experience. The Questing, the fact that there are little storylines (some better than the others) everywhere in the world, the quest hubs, that make you stay at one place for some time, get familiar with what's going on there and with the environment, because the quests will make you discover one place after another. I love that.
    In guild wars 2 you just jump around the map, stumble across something, don't even need to read the description, but you can still just jump in the action, even though you don't even know what you're doing there and what you're fighting for or against. And as soon the one task is over, you're done in that place. There's no need to stay anywhere, no camp, no home base, no tavern to stay in over night. That makes me feel very little in touch with all the environment. It's all optional and everything feels so superficial. The game doesn't invite you to stay a while at one place and get into the story there.

    I miss guildwars 1. GW2 to me paled in comparison as Guildwars one was one giant adventure to find skills, quests, and challenges.

    I found the game completey boring and repetitive. Quests and events are repetitive and lazy. How many escort, kill, gather and area defense events must we suffer through? The main story was very boring. They then removed the seasonal content and the story which was free and now they added back season one, which they removed for some stupid reason, and to insult you further, you now have to buy the content. Without buying any expansions, my character progression was over by level 40 and never changed.
    Combat is chaotic and button mashing. PvP is an indecipherable mess with so many combat effects vomiting all over the screen.
    Mounts ruined zone events for anyone who doesn't has one. By the time you run there they're over. I bought the game at release. They didn't even include enough character slots so you could make a character of one of each class. You also have to spend premium money for inventory expansions.
    So I bought a game at full price, then you have to purchase each expansion, and they still nickle and dime you for things that should just be a part of the base game like it's ftp. I don't know why this game gets so much praise. I guess because they designed it to appeal to a mass audience. The original Guild Wars was superior in so many ways.
    Also, what about the difficult end game content that is gated both by the elitist players and the excessive difficulty?
    The end game zones are infuriating trying to navigate without a mount, which can't be obtained without buying the expansions. Hmmm, I wonder if they had that in mind when designing them?
    There are plenty of problems with this game, but none of them were addressed in this video. With new players joining due to the steam release, a more balanced examination of the game is important so that players know what they're getting in to after the new game smell wears off.
