At 168 there's top dog Canelo then there's everybody else. David has his spot because Canelo did the heavy lifting beating the other champs, not because anything David did when his top opponent in 10 years at super middle is fighting one of Canelo's leftovers. Abel makes a great point on the scoring of the Lopez vs Ortiz fight..You cannot win a fight with defense. I never saw Ortiz consistently make Lopez pay. Plus, we DO NOT want judges favoring this style💯 It will ruin boxing if judges favored the type of fight plan that Ortiz implemented. It was a boring fight plan. You have to sit down on your punches and be effective. I just did not see Ortiz aggressive enough💯🤷
Not a lot of people can fight the style that Ortiz used to beat Teofimo, it requires skills, IQ and fitness. I guess Teofimo really made him pay as well?

I couldn’t stand Abel dismissing the Benevidez fight and waving the Canelo pom poms .Everyone is screaming from the rooftops for the Canelo / Benevidez fight and Abel somehow doesn’t think it’s the fight to make despite the 4 way argument of Benevidez being the mandatory, undefeated, going back to back vs Plant & Andrade plus overwhelming fan demand for the fight.
David Benavidez hasn’t really fought anybody! Anthony Dirrell’s resume is very suspect. David Lemieux won a vacant world title by beating another fighter who also won a vacant title. Demetrius Andrade isn’t a top-class fighter; I’m sorry to tell you guys, but he isn’t good. He always gets dropped by journeymen. The only valid opponent he fought is Caleb Plant, and that fight went to a decision. David Benavidez’s resume is okay, but not as good or great compared to Canelo. At the age of 27, Canelo had already fought Matthew Hatton, Shane Mosley, Austin Trout, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Erislandy Lara, James Kirkland, who was a dangerous fighter at the time, Miguel Cotto, Liam Smith, and Gennady Golovkin. So yeah, David doesn’t deserve it because he could fight Charlo, Morrell, Mungia. He could’ve fought Bivol and Betervie but he chose not to. He’s mediocre at best.
Abel knows the boxing business more than some reporter who is biased, likes to stir and tries to lecture the one who has seen it all. It was never an ideal situation for mandatory fights.

And In the terms you had put it of pulling out the cards….. Well in that case of course benavidez is the one everyone wants to see, but Going the distance and having trouble against canelos leftovers(plant) then stopping Doo Doo isn’t really impressive at all. You gotta know David was a 4 to 1 favorite! Hopefully Benavidez could fight a good opponent sometime late May or near then take on Canelo in September. As far as Charlo, All of sudden he’s at the bottom of the list… yet he was the big bad wolf that was gonna stop Canelo and knock him out. Now that we saw what happened to Jermell no one seems to care about Jermall anymore. And when it was first announced that canelo was fighting Jermall everyone was saying Canelo was gonna lose. If it wasn’t for him rejecting the fight and sending his little brother to fight we probably wouldn’t have seen the jermell fight if Jermall would’ve fought first.

But the super bowl comparison doesn't really fit because in boxing you can be your own "super bowl".
