In this video Musical Theatre Coach Marc Daniel Patrick discusses the hit number Proud Of Your Boy from the Disney musical Aladdin.
Coming from someone who has seen him do this live on Broadway, this definitely is not how he emotes on stage. He actually does really really well.
I figured as much, my first thought was that this was for the studio recording.
Can we just appreciate how Alan Menkin is basically making love to the piano. So amazing!
If you were born in the mid-80s, Alan Menken basically just wrote the soundtrack to your childhood-Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Newsies, Beauty and the Beast.

This song actually encapsulates what is supposed to be the true message of the animated film, and musical. It’s really about Aladdin finding his own self worth and becoming a better person. There’s a reason in the musical that genie tells him on several occasions; “Al, you’re gonna do great”. And it’s really a shame that they didn’t double down on that message and storyline in the live action film. Because there’s quite a bit of power and emotion there
I was rewatching this song and realised I’d heard this recording it before- it’s on the Aladdin musical soundtrack! There are a few tracks with Alan Menken at the end, and they decide to have a play through in a different key (tone higher or lower I can’t remember). That’s why at the end he was like ‘cool!’ I’m now more impressed by how well he sings it - especially doing it in a different key to normal!
This song was one of the last ones Howard Ashman wrote and they only found it was cut after he died. Menken holds it really close to his heart as one of his and Howard's best and it makes me emotional to finally see it in a show.
I cried when I saw this song live the first time... *sigh*
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Howard Ashman considered this his magnum opus - he wrote it not just for the film but also about his relationship with *his* mother and because he was gay. He died of AIDS before finishing the songs for Aladdin and Proud of Your Boy didn't fit with the tone of the new ones so it was cut. When I heard it during the show I started ugly crying it finally made it onstage.

A really interesting contrast to this is Michael Arden performing "Out There" on Good Morning America, next to a piano like in this video. He's basically just missing his Quasimodo outfit, but otherwise you can almost believe he's on stage.

Something I noticed a lot with videos of Menkin accompanying is that he does not always play it the way the actor is used to it being played... I first really noticed its with the video of him with Kara Lindsay singing watch what happens, he seems to be playing faster than she is used to cuz she actually falls a smidge behind. She also kept looking to him through it.
If that makes any sense lol also I bet it's a bit intimidating to be accompanied by the person who wrote the song, especially Menkin lol
Yes, this is actually one of my favorite songs from Aladdin. They can definitely make this song into the Sequel :). watched his sister's production in Sydney. She is the best Jasmine in the world with no doubt. She, later on, went to Broadway for the same role. and then joined by Sydney's Aladdin too. Such an adventure.

7:12 - I think, surprisingly, Clay Aiken's rendition of this song does this part very well. Honestly, his version is the reason I fell in love with this song.
One of my favorite songs. And actually, one that is easy for me to sing pitch perfect, which is rare. I love Clay Aikens version the best.

I have always loved this song! When it was FIRST released as part of Disney's "Music Behind the Magic" CD set, I sang it with my voice teacher and then weekly in a kids singing group, and it was one of the songs that taught me the power performing and music truly have and it was one of the things that really made me fall in love with being in the theatre! (Its probably bad to say, but the fact that I had all of the moms in the audience in tears every single week was one of my favorite parts!)

Yes please! Please do What Would I do, What More Can I Say, or I’m Breaking Down (or ANYTHING) from the last Bway revival. Would love to know what you think. I saw the show in the cinema and I would never forget how devastated everybody was when the end credits started to roll. Not a dry eye in the audience. There were people who refused to leave their seat because they were too much of a hot mess to be in public.

No, you’re not alone. Adam is a huge talent. In this impromptu performance he was perfect. Indeed brilliant! The “coach” is full of s-t!
There’s also a Mandy Patnikin performance of him singing a medley that involves children will listen and it’s quite pretty :)
You chose the wrong clip. I would suggest his live performance. He acts much more than he does here. He's just singing along with Alan here. I wouldn't be acting much either because that's not the purpose of this clip. He's literally brought Alan himself to tears when he performs this song live. That speaks massive volumes of any performer if you can make someone weep at their own music.

I think he did well with his vocal expressions. He went from self scorn to a promise to do better. Besides the plain meanings of the parents being perfect line, I caught a bit of sarcasm. (Why didn't you edit out the damn and f-bomb?)

Ooooh...my first comment as a patron. Marc, the vocal coach in you really came out...as it should. Adam has the basics, in my opinion, to graduate to having a Marc Daniel Patrick coach. Adam has the exotic look and my preferred Broadway male voice: lyrical, controlled. It must be a bit distancing when there is no live audience. Yes, I went through the video 3 times; watching Adam, watching you and then listening with eyes closed. It was then that I was satisfied with his overall performance. Fine voice! Kudos to you, Marc!

Maybe weird question but would u consider reacting to Starkid's offbroadway musical Twisted: The Story of a Grand Vizier. It's a muscial comedy mashup of things you might love: Disney, Wicked, Aladdin. Hey Marc, bit of a weird question to ask here but Google-fu isn't turning anything out and I'm really interested in your story.
Is there any external info you can point to (credentials for want of a better word) that show some things you've done or people you've worked with either as a performer or a coach? Obviously you know what you're talking about based on your videos, but musical theatre can be an opaque industry at the best of times so I haven't been able to turn much out. Maybe as is often the case you aren't receiving as much recognition as deserved, which would be a shame :')

LOJ does a really job of being just being in the moment when he's on stage or singing. He plays the scene, what he's getting real or perceived, as truthful as he can. He never tries to force something and that can result ima fairly subdued choices by him that plays immensely well because its so real and raw and not "acted". This is usually true for performers who see propel the plot and story with song instead of using songs to show how well they sing. Hope this helps.
Oh come on, this performance was out of the blue. Menken didn't tell him beforehand and Adam just had to wing it. This wasn't done with the intention of doing an act, Menken wanted a publicity video focused on Adam's voice and looks, with the idea of making a single out of this. Please review the same song in an on stage setting, because that's completely different. Menken did Adam wrong with this one. Truly.
No, I really don't see it that way. Yes with the introduction, I thought he was going to be slamming him. But as it went on (and I should take this moment to mention that I'm a music educator myself), I think what we're seeing here is a coach pointing out the differences between singing a song and living the song on stage. I think Adam is wavering back and forth between those two. He's used to emoting on stage, but he's also toning it in because it is a live performance by a piano. I see what Marc is doing as just pointing out how the stage performance would be so much more enhanced.
