    I think it is ironic that for years there was so much emphasis on hanging small toms in a way that no mount is actually attached to the shell and now these newer old kits go back to the old tom mounting systems. Makes you wonder how much of this stuff is acoustic science and how much is marketing.

      personally, i feel virgin kickdrums play much better. then again, drilled kicks are more convenient. eventually it comes down to taste

      This isn’t a new kit though. It’s a re-issue of the original Superstar line, so they used the old tom mounting system to stay true to it. If they reissued the OG Superstar drums with hanging mounts instead, all the old heads wouldn’t stop crying about how they ruined it and wouldn’t buy them. All their high-end Star and Starclassic kits still use the hanging mounts.

      I have a 90's sonor hilite kit and the 8" tom resonance is dramatically differant hunging on my fingers compaired to clamped on the mount, I thighten the mount as little as possible to retain its sustain. I wish i had a rims mount for it or the later sonor islation mounts. Its correct acoustic science

    Great to see the original Superstars back in business! I bought my used, five-piece '86 serial numbered Superstar kit in Candy Apple Red back in 1990. Since then, I've slowly built it up kit with a CAR 22x16 kick, 18" floor tom, a 10" and 15" Granstar closed toms in CAR and made three concert toms (6, 8, 10) from shells purchased, drilled and beveled by Precision Drums in NY. I finished them myself in Candy Apple Red and they turned out great. Love my Superstar based kit... hopefully, I can someday find the CAR 12" concert tom and 15" closed tom in the original Superstar serial number range. Been inspired by Neil Peart since 1978 when I was 15 and discovered Hemispheres. The rest is history. :)

    Had your Iron Cobra for 20 years! Mine must be coming round to 40 years old now. Bought in the mid 80's. Double pedal with power drive cams. It's so early it doesn't have Iron Cobra written on it, but it definitely is an Iron Cobra. Still going strong today, well ahead of anything else back in the day.
    Plus I still use the Tama snare drum stand I bought then as well and of course my Iron Cobra Hi-hat stand that was first to have only 2 legs that were moveable so you get your double pedal right next to the Hi-hat pedal.
    'Tama the strongest hardware in the world'.

    I love both of these kits. Fantastic sound. Nick D at sweetwater did a sound demo of the acrylic set where you could actually hear the drums because he wasn't slamming on the cymbals the whole time (hint, hint).
    Surprised and disappointed that tama doesn't offer add-ons for either of the kits.

    Great video, and nice new reissues, but to pay 2k for these kits, and 4k for the Bell brass is very hard to swallow. I can get a high-end maple kit for that price.

    • @danoneill130
      @danoneill130 Před 6 měsíci

      It's not like birch is an inferior wood. It was and still is used today in studios. That Superstar kit sounds just as good a lot of great punchy toneful drums in the studio or live. I've played a bunch of maple kits...high end, boutique, and lower end. Sometimes maple doesn't have that bite and aggressiveness that birch can offer. All that to say $2k is a great price for that kit.

    • @oysterhead5150
      @oysterhead5150 Před 6 měsíci

      I never said birch was a lesser wood, I just don't think 2k is reasonable for a set like that, especially without a snare. It should be more like 1500$ tops.@@danoneill130

    The best thing about these drums is the mounting system. This retro system proves that suspension mounts and all the over hyped and over priced mounting systems drums companies invent are simply marketing techniques. Yes I love my 2021 star cast tom mounts and quick-release memory locks but imo drum sounded better in the 80's with shallow bass drums, aged wood, metal on wood tom mounts, plain old triple flanged hoops, and drums heads with less plastic. I'm leaning towards picking up the acrylic version but might get the birch and acrylic. I appreciate Tama so much, I believe they make the all around best hardware and most affordable high quality drums.
