As a retired truck driver who spent nearly half my career hauling steel and machinery, I know a little about tarps and bungees. The first thing you guys need to do is attach your bungees to your tarps permanently. Just clamp the hooks closed in the tarp's eyelets with Channellock's so they won't come out/fall off. then it is easy to hook the free end back on the strap when not in use, to keep it from getting hooked on and tangled up when not in use. There's a quick easy maneuver for this but I don't think I can explain it without a visual aid. You can buy a trucker's 5th wheel hook @ any truck stop or trucker's supply store for reaching your straps from the ground. But you're smart and sensible enough to just make your own from whatever you have laying around. An old broom handle with a bent nail or any kind of hook attached to one end will do .

From Canada...I enjoy your honest dialogue on farming and real farmers. .My grandparents' farm was very similar. They didn't have all the fancy equipment just took good care of what they had, like you do. Anything to do with farming will never be boring. 😊

It was never fun when the silo unloader froze up. Shoveling silage out of the silo in December, January is a very dark place to be with no flashlight. Your cow that just had the calf looks like she takes her job serious. Looked like a lot of fun on the snow mobile. Stay safe and healthy Tay.
When I worked on the farm in upstate NY they had a manual silo unloader... Me. That was hard work twice a day, especially in the winter

Loved your video, brought back memories as a kid watching my dad, he worked at a farm in NH and milked 350 cows in a parler, he then bought his own farm and milked 40 with no pipe line, bucket milkers, he always said he hated milking parlers, tie stall barns were better for the cows, stay warm
When I was a kid these small dairy farms were common here in Maine, you don't see many active any more. So near to see one still going. Seeing the inside of the milk room and barn brings back so many memories of being a young kid visiting and working on farms.
Yes, unfortunately many small farms have vanished in the last few decades. It’s such a shame because its a wonderful way of life. Glad it brought back fond memories!
@tayfarms It did bring back great memories that barn seems familiar oddly. It's sad in a way but seeing you guys still doing it makes me happy. I've seen a few farms strike back up down here on the mid coast, a few younger folks are bringing em back which is also neat to see.

Taylor just watched this video and your looking for the hook that grabs the tarp, first of all hook all your tarp straps to your tarp and use a large pair Plyers and bend them closed then they stay on the tarp. The puller thing is probably a fifth wheel puller and can be bought at any truck stop they are about 4’ long with a nice handle. Hope this helps usually chrome so they don’t rust or aluminum…

On my cousin's dairy farm, he has 60 holstiens that he milks. His barn was a lot like yours a tie stall. He converted to a milking palor but only milks 4 at a time. You can tell the old-time dairy men by their bad knees. My cousin had both his knees replaced last year.

That is called a fifth wheel hook for semi's, truckers use them for unhook the fifth wheel connector between truck and trailer. can usually find them at truck stops

I'm impressed in so many ways with your channel, the pictures in the cow shed, we called it a shippon back home in the North of England over sixty years ago, the cows tied by the neck, the relative slow pace of milking, the silence and the sawdust, we too would go to the the mill for both sawdust and shavings, but in sacks filled as the blower showered you.

She's such a fortunate mamma. And such a pretty calf. Nineteen yrs old and still producing. At a large dairy she would have become hamburger meat long ago. You'll take such good care of your cows. Loved watching you all have fun on the lake.

What a video. It was nostalgia lane for me. Using the bucket milker. We used to milk between 40 and 50 cows that way. Those cows really like you. It is not often a cow will turn around and like the back of a person. I learned that if you treat cows like you do you can do just about anything to them. They know you won't hurt them. Enjoy your winter and snowmobiling. Also enjoy your coffee. You can make a hood to attach those hooks to the tarp. Have a great day and Gpod Bless.

I love how relaxed you guys are having a coffee break before milking. I jump out of bed in a mad panic to race to the barn to start milking. Coffee gets made after the machines are on.

Taylor, that fresh cow looks GREAT, I would have guessed she was about 6 or so. You two definitely take good care of your cows. I milk in a tie stall as well , you do get to know the cows better. I hope you get a replacement pitchfork before you fall in the bulls water tank. That snow mobile ride looked fun. Take care.

It's amazing to see the amount of body heat the herd produces, and how it warms the barn (to a reasonable temp) even on the coldest days. 19 years old and still milking! Her body condition is excellent, with a well attached udder. Also, amazing!

Get a piece of 3 /8s rod about 4.' an put a hock on on end an a D handle on the other end for you hand to fit like your shovel has
First time commenting on your channel, it takes me back to the 'home farm', milking in a stanchion barn, carrying in pails. We enjoyed our slower time with Polaris snowmobiles also, when l saw pick-ups on the frozen lakes then l would venture out on them with a sled. Stay safe and thanks for the videos.

New subscriber. Love the content. I grew up in Berks County, PA and small dairy farms were very common there. In college, I had the opportunity to spend a week living with an Old Order Amish family. They had a small herd (I think it was 45). The work was hard but very rewarding.

Morning Taylor. When I was a grade A hauler in the 90's I drove an 18 wheeler route truck with a 38 foot walker tank. Every other day I had to cross a 8 ton bridge so narrow that my outer duals almost rubbed the edges. It was the only way in or out of that dairy.
You two are birds of a feather for sure....fresh baked goodies and coffee junkies. You could make a hook or since you're in Maine use a boat hook. I don't miss milking cows, I'll stick to sailing.

You can get a tarp hook on the internet or any truck stop I have one for my dump truck at work makes life so much easier

Yes couple pieces of rebar make a tea on the one and they hook on the other make it about 3 ft that is about the perfect length I found

Morning Tay, when I was about your age, sawdust was free from a local mill but you had to load it yourself by the shovelful and used a pickup with side boards.
The hook for the bungee cords, Fisher snowplows used a long hook to pull the lower pins on the blade. Hope this might help. Stay out of the hot sun.

Hey there Taylor. For that sticky door that’s hard for you to slide open. Get a can of silicone spray. Costs about 10 bucks. Spread it on the track. You’re gonna love the results.
