Karla Ortiz is an absolute legend. She did NOT let us down. Always respected her as the amazing artist that she is but now she's just an inspiration as a person as well.
couldnt agree more! it makes me insane when the AI people attack her. But at the end of the day. it just means shes telling the truth. And getting close to the heart of it and it makes them uncomfortable. Cornered animals lash out.
It would have been good if more artists were up there. But the universal guy was definitely on our side.
Adobe pretends to be on artists side but it carefully crafted deception and PR.
Wow, Stability AI guy was basically the most painfully long way of avoiding saying "no" or answering the question. It's no wonder they kept on grilling him, I don't think he answered a single one properly. No further questions were needed for Karla, since she just straightforwardly spoke the truth.
tottally agree. Karla brought the goods. the crazy ting, she kinda only scratched the surface. They said they would "drill down deeper" in the next hearing..
As for Stability guys nonsense. It was so obvious. Noone was buying a damn thing he was trying to sell.

And these days... its not just artists. were entering into something else entirely. IM not sure how many people realize what a debt they owe her... Its okay. We know!!!
Karla was the only one talking about competition on the same market (unfair competition BTW, which is also why copyright laws exist, to balance things) , and not only competition with the same artist using their names in prompts and their work, EVERY freelancer will be buried in a landslide of Ai generated crap. It has happened in Etsy, even in shutterstock, Google image searches, it has taken space just by the sheer amount (undoubtedly by being algorithmic favored, you could argue) from small artists. This is not only about "copying" or "looking like the source material" this is also a production issue. It has happened before with markets flooded with cheap disposable stuff.

"We need to do it before they do it" (Paraphrased). I think the problem is that this stuff isn't even remotely about art, music, and stories. This is about the rich getting richer (as you said), but also about military development. I'm not in a panic about it, but it is concerning where all this can easily go.
couldnt agree more. alot of FOMO going on in all of this. None asked for any ofthis. Gen Ai is an answer to a problem that doesnt exist.
Even better, if anyone says "suck it, it's fair use", you soon will be out of your job, no matter what kind of work you do, and if you aren't out of a job, nobody will be able to afford you, and even if you produce anything with AI, you will be unable to compete against corporations training in "their own data" (not really, training on all our data, and then fine tuning it), so, go ahead, keep shooting your own foot. Go Karla.

There are even more factors to income and wealth inequality than AI. we have been marching down this road for a couple decades and its not getting better any time soon. Im not sure UBI is the best answer TBH. But. if they cant improve the socio economic parameters and conditions. where people can earn a liveable wage and buy a slice of the american dream or just have a decent life and raise a family...without being millionaires. ( probably by doing grimey shit to become so btw ) . And if AI takes over such a massive piece of the workforce. they may have no choice. However all it would do is validate the current inequality in opportunities most people have. and reinforce the horrible system we have. where .000001 percent of the population has 99. percent of the wealth. they will go to great lengths not to upset that current kafkaesque status quo.
Dont get me wrong. ill take some free money. i feel like in the current paradigm UBI is a bandaid. we need open heart surgery..

@@goth_ross I feel like the people who believe that UBI is the holy grail are completely insane and do not know anything about humans. There's no doubt in my mind that my income would be reduced to ash if my job were to be automated. These people think that everyone will be satisfied with their incomes just suddenly being cut in half and getting stuck in their homes doing nothing but surviving. I won't, and I'll grab my pitchfork over this. I don't want UBI, I want my job if it means having a bigger income.
To not even mention how this would alter the world. What is the end goal of all of this then, just make everyone live off basic sustenance while getting completely shackled to the government? These people have a real funny idea of progress: neo feudalism and indentured servitude.

i did as well. i really felt every word she said. not just the meaning. but how she must have felt at that moment. the stakes are so high. and this is really so very important.
I think the senators saw that... while im optimistic. its cautious optimism. Thankfully. the AI guys came off looking pretty bad. from probably any perspective...

But she was clear, formal, precise AND human. I am glad that her emotions (probably every artists emotions) shone through between the lines.
Many AI advocates say that this is just business and that there's no space for emotions...that it's just facts.
But I think that's absolutely not true, especially for everything Art related.

@@cutalin i agree. These guys are not really up on all of the details. They are just not as invested as most artists are. And yes.. there should have been more artists on the panel I will say. considering the White house initial task force meeting was literally the head of every major AI company and major tech companies. NOT A SINGLE ARTIST. At least they had Karla there. so thats a step in the right direction.
I'm starting to feel real good about using Ai to create images, videos, voices, so on of politicians, which I happy posted on politically charged FB groups cause I think it really helped them notice stuff like this. If Opt in becomes law, Ai will die... I want to watch Ben Brooks suffer, and looks like he is right now
