Which smartphone did you buy this year - and why?
I didn’t. No compelling reason to upgrade from my 13 Pro.
iPhone 8 used. I plan to buy next iPhone 13 used. Then I will go back to Android because of the bad direction the camera has taken, especially with all the AI meddling in the creative process, incapacitating the photographer.
@@bryans8656 I am still mourning my 4S for it's size 😉 Hence the 13.
I upgraded to the 14 Pro Max earlier this year. I do want the 15, but I think if I upgrade when I'm eligible next year, I might go for the 15 Plus over the Pro Max, or wait to see what the 16 brings to the table.
I went for the zfold5 it is so much better than regular phones once you fold you can't go back it's a 100x better than iPhone lol
Paying £1200 ish for the very best the segment has to offer , means your phone is every bit as good as a billionaires phone …..I bet you can’t say that about your car , house , tv , holiday etc ….

Yeah everyone uses pro max in America. McDonalds workers use pro max and so do multi millionares.
honestly the only thing a billionaire has that i would want that i don’t have is a private jet with the ability to travel anywhere at anytime. no interest in a mansion or tons of cars
And after doing more research, you can buy an even better phone than billionaire. Maybe not every year, but I think android phones were better than iphone 12 pro max. And now s24 ultra will be better than 15 pro max.

Coming from android, I jumped in to the apple ecosystem with both feet. I got the 15 pro max, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and a MacBook. Doubt I’ll ever go back to android. I love it.
Inma using a 15 pro max i got my phone last december and this Saturday morning it was not charging i took it to the apple store at the mall of the Emirates and they told me the charging pin is damaged its a physical damage and as i live in Dubai they told me i must pay AED 2086 and i told them how can it be a physical damage when i didnt even drop the phone the manager there was like we dont live with you i dont know if you ripped the cae out i asked him who does that its AED 5099 and he was like i dont know

You are right about the ecosystem! It all started for me when Apple launched the M1 Macs. I bought, and stiil use my M1 Mac Mini.
Three years later, I now have an 11" Space Gray M1 iPad Pro, Deep Purple 14 Pro Max, USB-C AirPods Pro 2, and my latest purchase is a Refurbished Abyss Blue 45mm Watch 7 GPS.
I bought an Apple TV 4K a couple months ago, after that I decided I’ll get my first iPhone, got the 15 pro max a month ago, then 29 days later bought an Apple Watch SE gen 2 44mm, next year(waiting for the refresh) I’ll get either an iPad Pro base or an iPad Air maxed out, whichever seems a better value

What most reviewers fail to say a lot of the time is that with iPhone it actually works fluently, my Samsung watch 5 pro was shit and sluggish and had some lag to it and connectivity problems here and there. Now I got the 15 pro max with Apple Watch Ultra 2 and it’s so much better. Again best thing about iPhone, no surprises it just works.
Thats exactly what you pay the Apple tax for. And it’s worth it tbh
Do you ever forget to charge your Apple watch some days? I have a Huawei GT2 Smart watch which is like 3 years old now, I still only have to charge it every 2 weeks (with all features enabled) Why cant Apple make a watch you can just keep on without having to put 1 more thing on charge at night! plus it's way more expensive!

I’m a iPhone guy. Have the 15 Pro and PM can’t decide which I prefer more. Like them both UGH
Perhaps it's an age thing but when I was younger I preferred android because it allowed me to tinker with everything. These days, I want a phone that just works every time, and I find iOS gives me that. Both ecosystems are much more mature now and there's pros and cons for either depending on what other tech is in your life. That said, buying this year's flagship phone, each year, is an expensive hobby, regardless of which you choose. The hardware advances each year these days aren't what they used to be, thus I tend to get an older phone and keep it for several years because that's more than enough for what I need it to be.
You are absolutely correct, that’s my life and all the apps I’ve bought or the music and movies I own, I will never ever leave for android
Action button: I'd forgotten I even had the switch on my humble iPhone 12 - just flicked it to see what happens and I turned off silent mode. I haven't touched that switch in over 18 months.
Cameras (iPhone v Pixel): You remind me of old "arguments" we just to have about Kodak v Fuji Film. Like now, it was mostly down to what your preference was.
Ecosystem: too right (he says using his M1 Mac mini while he listens to your video over his iPod Pros (purchased based on your review - I'm glad I did) and his 13" MacBook Pro sits downstairs. Oh, oh, I'm also using one of my two iPads as a second screen. I also have my Apple Watch SE buzzing away on my wrist to tell me there's someone at the front door. So beware reader for an iPhone is indeed the thin end of the wedge.
Full disclosure: I do have a Dell XPS laptop sitting under my desk whimpering for attention but its days are numbered.
I'm an IT Manager with 30 years of supporting both 'on prem' and 'in cloud' systems. These days I just want stuff that works out of the box, talks nicely to my other kit and lets me get on with life. If that makes me an iSheep, then all I can say is "bahh!". :D

I was talking to someone on my iPhone 15 pro max, all of a sudden it cut the call, and there was an unlock symbol in the black strip at the top of the screen. Anyone help me and tell me why this happened?
Best camera with a marketed tele lens that crops to less than half a megapixel...? Or do the lenses, and the "crop lenses" differ from the other 15 models?
Loved this video because of how real and relevant it seemed. You didn’t go on about specs for 10 minutes, you talked genuine concerns that the average consumer might have.
As for the action button, I suggest playing around with shortcuts. Mine used to just be silent switch, but now I’ve got it set to open a folder with several options from jotting down a note to opening the Google Assistant (sorry Siri, I only trust you with setting timers).

Hello! I thought when you advertised your video that you were going to say something that should scare me a lot when I buy the iPhone 15 Pro Max! Instead, it was full of platitudes. Sorry, but this video of yours was not exactly the most informative.

Got my 15 pro max for $200. Only paying $5.56 a month and got $1,000 for my 14 pro max trade in. Don’t buy these phones full price. Wait till the Christmas sales
And to have stupid bugs for £1200 and the storage scam like £200 extra for 256gb extra is just ridiculous. These phones should be the epitome of resloved software, refined hardware and stuff like overheating chips and poorly thought out software ways is jist astonishing. And wasting battery health like 13% battery degradation in 10months on the 14p max and now 15 is sometimes lagging and like 99% the same like the 14p max
Man, that ecosystem point described me perfectly; aside from the Apple Watch Ultra and MacBook Pro (I went for an SE Apple Watch and the M2 MacBook Air), Apple has gotten me to go in on every single one of those items (including the polishing cloth). It's the tech equivalent of "if you give a mouse a cookie"... But I don't regret it; I love my Apple tech and I'll keep on buying them as long as they keep on making them.
a few years ago I needed a nice smart watch. I used many and then I wanted to try the apple watch so I got an iPhone to pair it to. . now I own 10+ apple things (not yet the cloth) and everything they make I want to buy.

You can laugh at the cloth all you like , but it is the cheapest way into the Apple eco system !
Bought a macbook last year and now I have the iphone 15 pro max. i guess im slowly transitioning to the apple environment. it just works for me. I'm not rich or anything but i think the longevity of most apple products is enough for me to warrant my full transition.
Hard disagree on the action button. I set mine to a shortcut so it opens the camera, video camera, silences the phone or toggles the flashlight depending on the orientation that I hold the phone. Tilt it to the right so the volume buttons face up...action button opens the photo app. Tilt it to the left...opens the Black Magic video recording app. Hold it in portrait...toggles the torch/flashlight. Face down...toggles silent and flashes the torch on min brightness to visually confirm the setting.
The sky's the limit...it's all up to your imagination. If you only use the limited presets Apple presents, sure it's limited. However they give you the tools to do whatever you want with it.

iPhone 12 mini FTW. Bought new on release, just paid £85 for a new battery from Apple and should see me good for another year or two. Used to chase the latest and greatest releases. No more when I genuinely have a phone that works very well, does what I need it to do at a very good level and is small enough to carry without it looking like I have a roof slate in my pocket.
The size of the Pro Max ( and other large phones) is overblown by some people.

OMG Please stop you are describing me to the tee. I have been using apple products for the past 30 years, I am so stuck in the apple system. I have just upgraded from the Xr to the 15 pro max after much deliberation due the cost. I deliberately paid in cash hoping that It would make me change my mind. Well, it didn't work, but I can honestly say I am really happy with my new phone. 😄
Yeah, Mark you nailed it. However, as former Samsung/Sony fanboy, I have more trust in Apple making ever little feature such as Dynamic Island, Action button useful in a few iPhone/iOS development cycles. And for the rest I think iPhone 15 Pro Max is combination of little things that simply work, for instance FaceID is so underrated despite being a key feature for my daily activity! I use FaceID like 30 times per day withou even noticing. And I still waiting Google to implement a reliable FaceID alternative in Pixel/Android.
So things like FaceID, Dynamic Island, Action button, USB-C etc are winning combination for me, because it saves my time and effort, so I can be more productive and procrastinate more ))) This is why I pay more for Apple products.

I couldn't agree more mate my entire life I was a Android user but for the last few weeks I became a iPhone user now I have bought iPhone 15 Pro max Airpods 2 pro and watch in space of few weeks Apple completely take over me.Cor blimey.
Only issue with potentially eliminating the notch or Island is Face ID. I much much prefer Face ID to Touch ID. It’s much more seamless, easier, you don’t even have to think about it! Touch ID, and other finger print authentication, still works well but I have had issues in the past when my fingertips are dry, cracked, dirty, etc.
And technically Face ID is more secure.
I hope Apple doesn’t ditch Face ID, but rather find a way to put all the “tech” under the display. And just have a tiny hole for the main selfie camera, unless they can get that under the display too without affecting image quality.
If they got rid of Face ID, I’d buy the latest version of iPhone with Face ID and keep that as long as possible before I’d buy an iPhone with just fingerprint reader again.
I would say the standard I phone 15 is a brilliant phone. Getting over 2 days out a single charge. Great value for money phone.

I bought the iPhone 15 Pro Max (coming from a 13 Pro) because it’s the first time they implemented titanium, USB C, and I wanted to try a Max-sized phone.
The part about having the urge to buy an Apple polishing cloth though 😂 GUILTY! Btw, it’s not even that great..it doesn’t smoothly wipe screens and it leaves a lot of lint. I use an Oakley eye/sun glass cloth after wiping my iPhone screen down with an eyeglass lens wipe.

So whT if is titanium? I'm in dental industry and we use titanium cocr nicr metals on a daily bases today is all 3d laser printed or milled 15 y ago it was only casted and for that u might say it's a premium ..nowadays prices are kinda same for all metals they are made faster but if you nit-picking the casted is on top then laser and worst one which we don't use in our practice is milled..heard some ppl sat top quality grade 5 but actually not knowing what that grade(actually type) means it just represent surface hardness but does not tell you nothing about other things and is it actually better or worse..so please don't fail for fancy words and marketing

5:40 I don’t know how much you can customize those other phones you mentioned, but I know you can customize the iPhone quite a bit. Mine looks very unique compared to others (some dude on the “Apple Support Community” couldn’t believe that I had an iPhone when I posted a screenshot of it). Completely disagree. You don’t have to be an Apple person to have an iPhone and you don’t have to be a “Windows” person to have a PC. Actually for us in technology, we can have the best of all worlds and not be biased like this video 😂. I have an iPhone 15 pro and love my AirPods Pro 2 for work . And I have my Pixel 8 personal phone 🤷🏻♂️… I agree though, iPhone needs finger print reader NOW!

About the camera the only thing i wanna say is that i left the s23 (being a samsung fanboy since the horrible iphone 3g that led me to samsung) because of the iphone camera. Samsung tends to make unrealistic pictures and the retouch makes it even more horrible (remini on iphone made me reconcider what ai can do for photos). Sure the snapdragon gen 3 is a beast maybe even better thatn the A17 pro chip (debateable) but damn i ve bought every galaxy in the european market and they all came with the horrible exynos, so after a decade of feeling of being cheated i decided yo switch. On iphone even though the camera app itself is quite good you can pay for a more premium app and then see a great differerence. Cant say the same for samsung premium paid camera apps.. Sure you cant personalise the iphone and i miss my samsung music player sometimes but flacbox is as good (though 18 bucks is a cheat) even without the transparent widget and i m glad i did switch.
Was that a sim tray I saw on the 15 pro max the one where u can eject a SIM card from one phone to place in another
Correct - we’ve still got that in the UK.
For me when it comes to Dynamic Island hiding the camera, the security of Face ID, as opposed to Touch ID, is a tradeoff I am more than happy to make.
This is so so true regarding the addiction that comes with the Apple eco system
I just bought my first iphone ever yesterday iphone se 3rd gen. Just bc Apple has the small phones market cornered with the se. Because it don't cost an arm and leg. Small phones shouldn't cost flagship prices
Love your videos, Mark, but I have to disagree with you on the Apple ecosystem sucking in the unwary newbie. Granted I know your comments are tongue-n-cheek on this but as an Apple FB going back to my first Mac in 1990, I have yet to get completely sucked in. I have yet to purchase an Apple Watch (loathe the square face), and no Homepod (or any other assistant will grace my home, I cherish my privacy too much) , my 15 in MacBook Pro is of 2015 vintage, no Apple TV. I do have an iPhone 13 Mini, 2 iPad Pros ( 2022 12.9 specked out, and a 2019 11in iPad Pro) a Mac Studio M2 1Tb and that's pretty much it.
Appreciate the kind words. And welcome to my over exaggerated British sense of humour 😉 Although, I must say, your comment does, ironically, prove the gentler point behind my hyperbole; once you buy one Apple product, the next one isn’t far behind.
This is my first iPhone. I'm about 3 weeks in. Besides the action button being in the worst place possible, the software feels so half baked.

from an xs max (2018) to an iphone 15 pro max last Wednesday. every 5 years I think is the best time to upgrade. I just like the 15 pro max better than the 14 pro max.
Nice! I’m on the XS Max and considering going to the 15 PM, what would you say is the biggest difference? Honestly I would keep my XS Max if it wasn’t for the storage issue (only 64 gb, full just from apps) and usb c pulling me.
The most interesting things about the iPhone is the seamless integration with the Airpods Max which I love and the variety of cases from the likes of Pitaka. I have a Sony and the cases selection is nearly limited to Sony. Other brands are no-name brand that make cheap quality cases. Not to mention UWB transmission with luxury cars that now some few Android phones use too
i did buy the iphone 15 pro max with 512 gig at launch cuz i want to try new things. Last time i used a iphone was 6th model back in 2015 then i switched to samsung however last month i got even the apple watch ultra 2 aswell and i have to say the real thing ITS SUCKS!! Apple feels like fast communicating phone but lacks other technical apps and more. Samsung however last one i did have and still going strong is the note 20 ultra and that phone is way more technical. I do not understand why people is defending it, Iphone lacks shortcuts like ALOT i tried everthing but no sucess to it
Welded to Apple eci system lol, never had any sails push adverts directly to me ever, my 2014 MacBook Pro still works flawlessly that’s 9 yrs old, if you dint like the 15 pro max and want Apple but the smaller phone , you decided to buy it, personally I love the bigger screen to view my photos and videos and watching Utube on and it fits in my work trousers just fine, yes I have M2 and iPhone 15 pro max, it’s my choice and I’m happy with it, if you don’t like don’t buy it and pick another brand and be happy with it. As you said, Samsung smart phone is more expensive now, you only live once so enjoy it and like I said, if you don’t like it then simply don’t buy it 😎🤓🤓

Apple could make a phone with no island AND faceid. They're not going to do that, though. They're going to milk the ugly notch and pitch it as a good thing for years to come.

The ecosystem is strong. However, I have interested in getting oneplus open, which by the way is super expensive but not sure if the software is there. A bunch of apps not optimised, buggy when opening and close the screens, etc. Im whiling to leave the ecosystem but Android needs to reinforce some development guidelines
I love everything Apple except the iphone. I absolutely hate this phone even though I’ve switched in 2019 and have tried really hard to like it. The iPhone 15 pro max is not impressive to me and those things you’ve mentioned in the video are exactly right. Practically useless. The only reason I’m staying with the iphone is the watch, which unfortunately Samsung has not matched yet, or else I’d switch to a Galaxy S3 Ultra.
I'm happily ensconced in the Apple ecosystem. That being said, I don't feel any particular need to upgrade from my iPhone 14 pro max. It works perfectly well and probably will for at least another year or two.

Pixel 8 Pro with watch 6 classic combo is fantastic for me
I like my Pixel 6a more than my 13 Mini. From the standpoint of privacy and the ability to personalise it, the Pixel is better. I like using the Pixel without Google Android; I prefer using the GrapheneOS on my machine. I like the videos the 13 Mini makes. The stills taken on both of these phones can be edited in post to look more like each other's photos. They complement each other in my lifestyle.
I have the 8pro but the finger scanner is very bad
I have the pixel 6 and iPhone 13. Both are great in their own ways . I gravitate more towards the pixel 6 as it just seems nicer to use . I still love my iPhone 13 though! Video on the iPhone 13 is on another level ! Photo wise, very different, but at the same time pretty much on par. In high contrast/ rich warm mode filter the iPhone takes superb photos !

The price of the device is not a negative. Anything in life is priced so that some people can buy somethings and others cannot (in the capitalist society that yes - spans all of Europe as well).
iPhone15 Pro Max is nearing a point, though, that whether buying this or other new Apple iPhone makes sense since the new features are negligible.
What comes to the Apple ecosystem as a whole (which I have fully from computers to phones, pads, tv etc. etc.) it is obvious that Apple is pricing themselves out from so many people it doesn't make much sense anymore.
I think if Apple does not make a course correction with their pricing, they will be in for a rude awakening and soon. After almost 20 years of being in Apple ecosystem I'm very close to shatter the whole thing and make a new system for myself and leaving only perhaps my iPhone and MacBook and ditching everything else. This is not an iPhone problem - this is imo an Apple problem.

@@MarkEllisReviews I tried to make my comment as short as possible. You are absolutely right: while _usually_ you get what you pay for, Apple is not there anymore. I.e. Apple is pricing their products so high it does not make sense. I think I should have lead with that sentiment before any others.
So yes - Apple IS pricing them selves out. I have no idea why this is. But what whatever the reason, like I said, I have a feeling they are getting very close to destroying the confidence on their brand.
I have never used iphones and im not an apple person but this is the most complete iphone they ever made imo.

While I don't necessarily disagree with you, my problem with the Android ecosystem is how totally fragmented it is across all of the phones. Not to mention that the only way to get pure Android is to buy one or two specific phones. Then there is the question of how much do you trust Google.
I went from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to an iPhone 15 pro Max and I'm very happy with it. I also upgrade from the watch 5 to the 9. Cell phones in general are very mature and new features and improvements are often not that big of a deal anymore.
My 2 cents...Keep up the great work Mark. I get a lot out of hearing your perspective on tech.

Having worked with buggy software for 30 years, I can appreciate how well Apple software works and seamlessly integrates all of the products together. I have little patience for the android mess of apps and sloppy software. There’s also security concerns with android products , which are a hackers delight. Apple does not have these issues. Maybe you can comment on software QA of Apple and the imitators of android .

Personally, I think that your view on the Dynamic Island and the Action Button is a bit unfair, or at least just a matter of perspective. For example, I actually use the Dynamic Island quite a bit on my 14 Pro Max, it's quite convenient when having multiple apps on. Could I live without it? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean it's not useful for those of us who don't really give a toss about the size of the camera cutout 🤷♀️😂
As to the Action Button, it sounds to me like your use or lack thereof is a matter of muscle memory rather than it not being convenient. Correct me if I'm wrong though, I haven't used 15 Pro/Pro Max so I can't speak from experience.

I recently bought the iPhone 15 pro max and hung onto my S22 ultra. I prefer the screen on the S22 though ironically I quite like the Dynamic Island on the iPhone and prefer the smoother way iOS works. Having said that I’m waiting to see the S24 ultra before choosing a final 2024 winner for me.

"Later this year" is somewhat of a diminishing target. In any case, why have a "phone of the year" when so little has been done to improve the phones(in general). As far as I'm concerned, it's just a phone. I don't spend massive amounts of money on one. I keep the one I do buy for years(still rocking the 12 mini). I don't obsess over the quality of my photos and/or videos. It's just a phone. If a person goes wacky over a notch, that person has a problem best dealt with in deep therapy. I'm "embedded" in both the Apple ecosystem and, apparently, the liberal use of quotes and commas. I want things I can't afford and can't justify for purchasing. Just as I was when I used a PC. I'm a gadget person, but there are limits to my insanity. It's just a phone.

I don't care about Apple nor Xiaomi. I think this fanbases war is hilarious thought. Furthermore, I stick to my Samsung Flip, it works like a charm, it's highly customizable, and it closes, which is very useful for preventing scratches and cute at the same time.
Only thing with this phone is that is not android. If you can't afford it don't buy it very simple
