  • Many Americans have thanked members of the military for their service. But Matt Eversmann says that most aren’t aware of the day-to-day reality faced by those who serve their country. Together with bestselling author James Patterson, the retired U.S. Army sergeant has co-authored a new book, "Walk in My Combat Boots: True Stories from America’s Bravest Warriors," which tells the story of 85 veterans from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan. Eversmann and Patterson speak with Walter Isaacson about how we can better understand our military.

Thank you for this interview, and for writing this book. I served in the Army and spent two tours in Vietnam, first with the 9th Infantry and second as an adviser to a Vietnamese infantry unit. Since leaving the Army in 1969 I've been asked more times than I can count how a "smart guy like you" couldn't avoid the military. When I explain that I volunteered, that I wasn't drafted, most people just shake their heads and change the subject. I'm hoping that at least some of those people read this book so, maybe, at long last they'll understand. Thanks again.

We've been at war just about every year since our founding. These wonderful Patriots join for love of country. We must add love of the physical country! We're at $770 billion on military annually.Time to turn these Patriots efforts and intelligence on our number one security risk. Climate. Thanks for a look at the actual lives of our military.

"Addiction to duty" can also be fear of stopping what you are doing because when you do, and you start feeling, you know you will collapse. Seeing horrific injuries and people dying isn't without its damage. That nurse almost certainly is going to have to deal with things someday. The longer she waits, the harder it will be.
