  • Perhaps one of the most well known Gundam properties, Unicorn explores a time in the Universal Century of uncertain peace in the wake of Char's rebellion. Released starting in 2011 over the course of 3 years, Unicorn is a series that some love and some hate, so let's see why.

    I never watched a UC gundam series before. I just decided to pick one and watch it on a whim, and unicorn has great animation and looked pretty cool.

    Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn was, hands down, the franchise's tough act to follow. The OVA that took all the best parts of the UC shows before them, amplified them, added in some new dynamics, and resulted in one of the best pieces of anime I've ever seen. These first three episodes did a perfect job of setting up the plot, characters, and stakes, ending by beginning Banagher's character growth of trying to reach out and not kill. It's genuinely good stuff, and the series only gets better from here, particularly in episode 5.

    Not gonna lie, Unicorn was what convinced me to finally give Gundam a fair shake and was the first series I stuck with till the end when it was still on Netflix. Until I saw 00, Unicorn was my #1 Gundam series. Though what probably did help was watching Des Shinta's Super Robot Wars V reviews that helped to fill in a fair chunk of the backstory of the Universal Century that lead into Unicorn. And yeah seeing Unicorn before 0079 really changed how the One Year War came across knowing that the Earth Federation are the actual fascist villains of the Universal Century and that was before they created the Titans and the event they engineered to create them in the first place. Now I never read the original Unicorn novels so knowing that Banagher was originally a Cyber Newtype does kind explain the flashbacks, though speaking of the novel and anime differences we'll get to two major changes next time, both of which were caused by the interference of Yoshiyuki Tomino. One is annoying, the other is just reinforcing his misogyny. Speaking of said change, we'll get into Riddhe and what a raving nut job he is.

    Easily my favourite Gundam series, largely due to the pacing. Zeta Gundam and ZZ have so many episodes with generic fights, random dialogue and 2 minutes of actual narrative. Operation Maelstrom should have been highly detailed and several episodes long.
    If Zeta and ZZ had a dozen hour long episodes instead of 40+ 20 minute episodes, the shows would have been way better.

    @twelfthknight Před rokem +8

    The part of Unicorn I liked the most was its clarifying and recontextualizing the Universal Century into a more comprehensive and heavily political overarching narrative. It takes a very different dynamic from other Gundam, in Unicorn Banagher is a sort of scale on which the opposing sides weigh themselves upon and confess their sins to. From Banagher's perspective we see the shape of the era and gain more insight into why it became the way it did. Which had certainly been touched upon in other Gundam series and novels, but never quite crystalized into a narrative like this.
    When I first watched Unicorn I was going through University and really getting into history and political theories for the first time, it was something of a treat to have that feet under me going into it as the story went places. I really should read the light novels, some of the differences between the text and the anime seem pretty fascinating.

I loved it. The mech designs and allusions to history made the show feel like it was set in a real world, a bit like Tolkien or in other stories with well fleshed out worlds. I went on to watch all of 00 to really see if this gundam thing was for me, loved it, then watched all of UC in chronological order. The 79 movies made the original series easier to binge, Zeta was incredible, ZZ was difficult at first, and 8th MS Team and Thunderbolt were stellar side stories. Getting back around to unicorn gave me a whole new look on the show, but I wanted to be clear that as a fan of "gundam" but with no experience of the UC, Unicorn is absolutely watchable. I see those gunpla boxes... one of us, one of us... lol.
    So, I have some issues with the whole underlying idea of Laplace's Box and I do think Unicorn is up its own butt quite a bit. Maybe I'm just an extreme cynic but the idea of a "concept" changing interplanetary politics that much on its own seems so groanworthy considering how vulnerable to propaganda the human race generally is. Like, I can't even imagine or suspend my disbelief that anything could come out in the actual, real world that would make everyone go "oh, wow, so that's the actual truth huh? wow we were wrong. how could we be so stupid." Someone in power would have already thought to spin it and/or people would just ignore it. I do get that it's kind of an interesting idea and that people have fought and died for ideals before but ideals and philosophies can just be invented whole-cloth and don't even have to have any bearing on anything as long as someone with power or influence can make people passionate for their cause.
    Also I don't really love Newtype stuff. It's fine but the Unicorn as a mech and its time travel shenanigans are very overrated imo. But then again, I tend to unconsciously dislike popular stuff, which I think is kinda just being a knee-jerk hipster, but at least I'm aware of it. *goes back to building old model kits of suits no one cared about*

      I do not know about you but I found many of the new suits to feel overdesigned like the Rozen Zulu or titular suit family but that may be holly my individual opinion.
      Newtype powers seem to have an level acceptable by each individual so having a problem is perfectly reasonable. The Unicorn's feats are out of place and skip over from what has been shown into the realms of essentially magic so they feel out of place in the franchise.

      Seconded on the "Laplace's Box feeling useless" front. In UC 0050, when Zeon Daikun was preaching and legitimately trying to change the world, this could have made a difference. After 15 years of extremely brutal war in some of the most disturbing war crimes imaginable by both sides, it's useless. And as we see in Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, 10 years down the timeline, nothing has changed, with the Mafty uprising being more effective than the damn box.
      It makes more sense when you read the original novel and realize that it's supposed to be the anti article 7 of the 1947 Japanese Constitution, but even then, it still feels pretty hokey.

      The Rozen Zulu was merely one of the major examples I have issue with, in other words I agree on the Sinanju being gaudy. I find the Sinanju slightly less so but the one shade of red with the additions made to it that seperate it make me retroactively appriciate the Sinanjy Stien far more even though Narrative was a true waste of time, but my thoughts there are best spared. The Rozen fails where the Silver Bullet succeeds for me as the SB still maintains the style of lines from the Dovin Wolf. The RZ'S rose shaped pods feel out of place. The in show colors do not help either, aesthetically it looks better with the higher contrast of the HG but that is 100% personal.
      The ReZel line was something I did not bother mentioning because I think they are... fine. The chunky Gustav Karl design however is personally the least endearing Federation suits because I prefer the origional, far sleeker design.

    I wholeheartedly agree. Watching Unicorn in its entirety was mentally exhausting at times. The slightest thing that takes your attention away & you'll miss hella key details. The animation & fights still hold up to this day.

    Probably 3-5 favorite series behind 00 ibo and origins. Near to seed and the builder series

    This series is how I jumped into UC and it remains my favorite. My reintroduction to Gundam was IBO which got me to bit the UC bullet. Before that I saw G Gundam on Toonami as it was airing but then SEED scared me away from Gundam for years with some of the heavy stuff in the later episodes. But back to Unicorn. The music is awsome, the mobie suit designs are some of my favorite and I love them more with every rewatch with the Unicorn itself in Unicorn mode being my all time favorite mech ever. Katoki is the man. I love Banager as a protag and Marida especialy after going back to watch ZZ. I loved Mineva as a total badass i her own right without ever having to be an action hero at all. Frontal is cool as hell and what I really appreciate about him is that he does a great job at presenting himself as this more pragmatic revolutionary than his more obviously insane predecessors while in reality being just as broken and spiteful and his plan in actuality is Zabi tier evil when you get down to it.

    Also, they're the Sleeves because they are the fringe remnants of Zeon. Just like on a shirt where sleeves are the smallest, furthest portion of cloth from the main part of the clothing, the Sleeves are the tiniest portion of Zeon Remnants. I guess it's also because most zeon remnants are part of Mars Zeon, Oldsmobile or not.

    Regarding Audrey falling in the colony; freefall and floating in space should feel similar/identical, so given that she grew up in space, it probably isn't that jarring for her. Not sure if her relative nonchalance is intentionally due to that fact.

    It's a development of the Original plan for it (the Delta Gundam) called the Zeta Plus

  • @scarletrain6757
    @scarletrain6757 Před rokem +1

    The delta plus isn’t a rebuilt Shiki. Basically before Zeta Gundam the federation was still toying with transformable Gundam and they developed the Delta Gundam, but though simulations it was deemed unstable, the idea was reworked into the Hyaku Shiki. only until they captured a Gundam MK II and reversed engineered its Movable frame did they figure out how to make a stable transformable Gundam, then they went back to the original Delta Gundam plans and made the Zeta Gundam. Some time after Zeta Gundam they went back to the Delta Gundam plans again and make the Delta plus

    Another quick correction: the Zeta Gundam has the BIOSENSOR. The Biocomputer is in the Gundam F-91 and works almost like the complete opposite of the Biosensor. Where as the Biosensor is essentially like the Psycommu taking the pilot input to assist with the Gundam's controls, the Biocomputer works sort of like the ZERO System where it takes the information from its surroundings and directly feeds the information into the pilot's mind.

    Ya know, Unicorn lost me when I tried watching the 1st OVA when it first came out. Found it boring, while I've watched a ton of Gundam in my life. I forgot all about it, till it was made into a 13 episode TV series. That actually helped me a lot and watched the whole thing. Ended up really enjoying it.
    Will say Full Frontal 😂 who came up with that name? Sounds like a chip and Dale name. I do like Banager and his obsession with Audrey... Audrey you're the love of my life! 😂 love the Bright cameo and yeah we learned that Char and Amuro died... that witch Lala dragged them both to their deaths. She's a witch, succubus bitch. They would of done just fine if she left them alone.

    Had a friend join me in watching Unicorn when it aired. He knew nothing about the Gundam series, but was hooked by the animation, action and score. However he didn't finish it with me, mainly cuz of how long the gaps were between episodes. He also was getting annoyed by how whiny Banagher was 😂 If the show released all in the same year, I'm sure he would have watched it overall and maybe became a broader Gundam fan. But in the end I'm thankful they took their time with it.

    I watched Unicorn after watching 00 and the very first Gundam, and yes, I didn't understand anything other than the superficial stuff and the references to 0079, don't watch this unless you saw the original four shows(79, Zeta, ZZ, Char's). You could still theoretically understand the premise or just enjoy the visuals, but you would lost most of the time and wouldn't appreciate all the cool references, call backs and things that paid off after so long. Years later I came to Unicorn after watching everything and man, it was light and day, at the time I liked but didn't care too much, but now I love it and understand it's messages and themes.

    I think you misinterpreted the scene where "Audrey" is falling inside the colony and Banagher saves her. She was in the center "hub of the wheel" part of the colony at the beginning. That's a zero-G area, but she didn't have control of her momentum, so in order to regain control, she grabbed at a lever. Unfortunately for her, the lever was to some gas nozzle which pushed her toward the walls (ground) of the colony. Even so, she wasn't "falling" then any more than when she was going sideways through the hub. She stays at her current momentum. You only feel "gravity" in an O'Neal colony when you are in contact with a floor or the ground and are moving at the same rate as the walls of the colony. Otherwise, you're in zero-G. And far from being scared of "eternally falling," that would be the feeling "Audrey" was most used to. She's spent most of her life in space ships and space stations. Zero-G is also called "free fall" because that is the feeling you get in zero-G. I'm sure uncontrolled momentum gradually heading toward a moving wall would be scary though, but for "Audrey," it would have been the fear of the impact rather than the falling itself that was scary.

  • @ChangeOfMemory
    @ChangeOfMemory Před rokem

    Well, if you think that Unicorn is the most unapologetic entry for people who have never watched UC Gundam, just wait until you see "Hathaway's Flash."
    At any rate, Unicorn is good for the exact reason it feels heavy and slow (referring to the show, not the RX-0, that's pretty fast). Gundam has always been about different motivations clashing together and how far one will go, even if their own motivations bring pain and death. Robots are just a means to tell a story, not the central part of it. You can change mobile suits with magic, jets, or tanks, but the strong point is always the story.
    Anyway, don't get me wrong, the scene where the Unicorn pushes the Kshatriya away, and the leitmotif starts playing while the Unicorn enters the NT-D mode is probably one of the best moments of any Gundam series
