  • Thoughts have power. Positive thoughts shine a light for the individual as well as for the universe; negative thoughts wreak havoc and destruction. How do we deal with the negative thoughts that can take over our minds, and hold us back from spiritual fulfillment?
    The portion of Tzav (Lev. 6 : 1 - 8 : 36) is read on Shabbat HaGadol, 10 Nisan, 5783 - April 1, 2023

I just appreciate your channel sooo much! Listening to the parshat readings reminds me of when I was able to go to shul and was so eager to learn. I recognize most titles of the parshat when you speak them and have fond memories!

Rav. Chaim, can you do something for us? read the entire book of Exodus in English for us within the context of Rashi and Maimonides commentaries? I see the current historical reality and time we are in as a direct and immediate parallel within the framework of reality for every Jew now, I am also seeing that we are turning against each other in Israel and treating each other worse (in some sense) than others treat us. We can't demand Jews see that the way we treat each other determines the way the world treats us, but when you are willing to do to your brothers what some of my brothers are doing, your enemies see that and exploit it. We have to have to, have to change the way we treat one another because once we do, the world will quake like the parting of the sea.
You are right in pirkeavot that our sages say sin begins with perceptual desire and the mind itself that desires sights, my namesake ibn Pakuda has an excellent book on the heart of Tsav. But why is it so close to Exodus? You are a great teacher, and your words and Baal Shem Tov continue to sustain me. Everything and everyone is being devalued, but Torah tells us there is infinite value in every human being and every human life. We are all under, in some sense the cruel adversary of Pharoah, Rabbi I believe the only hope of redemption from this comes from knowledge of the Lord and that we participate in doing deeds of kindness for one another and in a sense reddem each other so he can redeem the nation and through our redemption, redeem the nation's and renew the face of the earth with His chesed. Are we not the hands of his chesed in this work? And if we are, what does thst mean for how we are treating each other, how we ecploit each other, how we are hurting our own people Israel? And then we expect our enemies and those who hate us to stop? Israel, believe in yoursrlf and the profound goodness of your people turn not away from your own flesh and blood! Am I wrong?

Thank you for this thought provoking message(no pun intended).
Controlling ones thoughts is indeed very difficult being surrounded by so many temptations. Not easy. You must be ever vigilant.
But how do you deal with these thoughts in your dreams?
Periodically, I have dreams where I am intimidating, aggressive, sometimes violent and maybe commiting crimes or illegal acts.
Not often, perhaps a couple of times a year, but this person I am in my dreams is not who I am in real life.
    Very perplexing.
How am I supposed to deal with these?

I've never been able to fully understand the idea that a thought is worse than an action. I do understand that repeated thoughts on doing an avaira can lead to actually doing the avaira, but otherwise this concept is beyond me.

I believe the point being that if one can think it one can also perform it. If the thoughts rule the mind the deed will follow. Choosing to control our thoughts will ultimately affect our being and relationship with Hashem.
