  • JBL Horizon black: amzn.to/1Jadwp3 (Amazon Germany)
    JBL Horizon white: amzn.to/1T0dENy (Amazon Germany)
    Spinido iPhone Dock: amzn.to/1T0dF48 (Amazon Germany)
    The JBL Horizon is a multi-functional night stand accessoire. Its main purpose is a bluetooth speaker system (2 x 5W with 70Hz - 20kHz) with dual USB charging ports. However, it is also capable of being an alarm clock, an FM radio tuner and a wake-up light. In my opinion, this is the exact order its features should be looked at.
    Talking about audio quality: the acoustics are quite good for being that simple and small, it has a strong hint of bass in its equalizer settings, but is still clear enough to be clear in voices. A similar characteristic that is known with Bose products. The dual charging ports are capable of powering a smartphone and a tablet (iPhone 5S and iPad mini 4), but I'm uncertain what its maximum ratings are. Its alarm clock features are limited to the most basic of all: manual time settings, manual daylight savings time (however, with a very elegant and simple switch on the bottom) and a battery to keep the time data when affected by a power outage. You have a few different acoustic alarm tones to choose from, besides the common buzzer or FM radio. You can also use your bluetooth audio to wake you up. Though I'd suggest having played music the night before and have it automatically turned off by the sleep timer to make sure that the connections are ready to be used the next morning for the alarm. Its last feature is the wake-up light that is integrated into the alarm clock. It's pretty much just a simple light on the back, which isn't all that bright to compare it to a sunrise, and way too quick to be such thing. Having had experienced the Philips Wake-Up Light, I know what's possible and the JBL is far from being one. I'm using the JBL as my personal alarm clock (or night stand speaker?) now and it does wake you up gently - though as gentle as it can be within 15-30 seconds of it starting, whereas the Philips takes its time to very gradually increment its brightness and audio levels across a timespan of 5-10 minutes before actually being noticeable.
    Overall I think this product is good if you want a nice bluetooth speaker that replaces your old alarm clock with a bonus of an indirect light. If you are expecting it to be more, then you are most likely to be disappointed. My favorite feature is the USB charging as it makes it very easy to get some power for your phone over night. By combining it with a neat little dock, it actually looks well organized. (Doesn't matter if it's a smartphone, smartwatch or tablet.)

    My family and I were on a trip at Dubai in December 2018, and the hotel we stayed there (Aloft City Centre Deira) had black JBL Horizons in every room. It is a really nice and neat little product, especially in a nice 4-star hotel room. Although I found this video right after I found the product in the hotel, I am commenting way later after that. The design is very nice and modern, and the glass over the display is a nice addition. I did do one of the basic functions of this product, that is, setting an alarm. I used the alarm sound named "2-Solar", which I think is my favourite of the three melodies. I also like the other two melodies. Of course, as you know, you can also choose FM radio, Bluetooth streaming and beeping as the alarm sound. I also connected my phone to the Horizon via Bluetooth, and I do recommend doing so. The sound quality is very good, and the speaker gets quite loud. I pretty much did not use the FM radio function though. Overall, I really like this product, and I really liked to have a JBL Horizon in the hotel room. I did have good memories with it during that trip, and I would like to have this product again in my bedroom at my Bangladeshi home.

    Nice video. I just received my product. I believe there is as battery. Turn it upside down, and there is a slotted area. I haven't opened it yet, but i believe that is why when you unplug the product the time will stay on. Make sure to first remove the clear, small, plastic tab.

    Just recently bought the black one. It was on sale and I've been eyeing it for a while. So couldn't resist. Set up was fairly easy for me anyway. Sound quality for a small alarm clock radio is good. It's a JBL so you know they have good speakers. I like the ambient light. I find the display really good and the fact that it dims nicely when the lights are off a plus! The gradual alarm sound is a plus and the ambient light option is a good thing. Over all I'm impressed so far. I found the pairing for my Samsung to this device was pretty quick and simple.

      +Shirley shadbolt That is about the only real downside I have been reading of with this alarm clock. Initially, they complained about the fm radio station to keep turning up volume until its so loud it actually hurts, or that it doesn't just turn on the radio (like you say), but rather uses it as a alarm sound. Not much I can help you with, might have to get in contact with JBL and see if they do have another firmware update lined up?

    @ Florian Uhlemann Great review, but , I don't know if you have this problem (for me he is a problem ), in the night when it is quiet, very quiet, the volume at VOL 01 (min), its too loud on the radio, can I adjust him some how ? THX .

    • @florianuhlemann
      @florianuhlemann  Před 8 lety

      +Aldo DeNigris Well, I've only been using bluetooth audio via iPhone (which has an additional volume control) thus I can reduce the volume while on the lowest VOL 01 step. I could image that the radio can be quite loud. The only "fix" i can think of is hanging a towel over it to dim the volume - but yeah, that's certainly not the whole point. The volume is indeed a little flawed on the Horizon. Most people complain about the immense volume raise when listening to the radio after being wakened by the radio (instead of alarm sound) as it would keep getting louder and louder if you do not "disable" the alarm.

      I believe so. I had sold my used device after approximately 7 years for the price of a new one. Strangely so.

    is this the only choice of jbl products that no need to charged? i already had jbl flip. 3 and clip+ and too lzy to recharge it everyday..what i need just plug it, i try jbl charge 3 and could play while im plug it but im afraid theres issue w the battery later

    • @florianuhlemann
      @florianuhlemann  Před 7 lety +1

      I understand your issue. Most audio products nowadays are battery powered devices for on the go. I also do not appreciate that. Example: Libratone Zipp. Ideal home speaker (360°), but it's battery powered. Why? The Horizon is purely powered off a wall adapter only.

      there is also JBL pebbles. but why would you specifically want JBL speakers if there are tons of great speakers that sound better for the price and don't have batteries. btw if you leave them charging all the time it's not going to hurt the battery that much, and you said you don't care about the battery anyway. there is also the Xtreme, but it's expensive, it seems like it kinda was designed to play while charging though.

      Hello Lars-Ole, I'm sorry you are experiencing difficulties with your connection to the JBL speaker. I'm using my speaker almost daily now and we keep switching between Amazon Echo Dot, iPhone and iPad. Once paired you can easily connect with your other device by just tapping on the JBL Horizon name. Keep in mind that if a device is already connected to the JBL Horizon, it will not accept the new connection.

    Good luck with this device. The "manual" is almost useless. It only points out what is spelled out on the case itself. There are no detailed instructions as how to set things up. I tried to set the alarm and I gave up on that. The display light dims according to amount of light in room and it was too dim to see what I was setting because the legend was almost invisible. You can turn off the lights so to make the display brighter but then you can't see the legend on the buttons. There is not way to set the display lights to your preference when needed. There's a big light on the back that kept coming on unexpectedly (OK, I hit some button or other that activated the light) and once on I could not turn the light off. The radio was loud and clear which I liked. But, you need lots of patience or maybe get somebody who writes computer software programs to help you get things going. As much as I wanted to make this thing work, I couldn't. The quality of the clock itself seems pretty good. JBL could do a lot better if they provided a manual that was usable.

      Not every one is "tech savy" you could say. I'm not a computer programmer by any means. Yet I was able to figure things out without even looking at the "how to manual". It's pretty basic like most other alarm clock radios out there when it comes to setting the alarms. But that's just my opinion. I find mine which i just got recently as it was on sale just right.

      Thank you for the feedback. I agree, some features may not be intuitive. turning off the light will not be immediate as it's using the phase-in and phase-out delay to make it seem more natural (sunrise / sunset). Thus, when you push the button, it will not happen immediately. I hope you could figure out how to correctly set your alarm clock.
