- This is the first Munchies episode featuring a food writer. Sure, we have had food personalties who write, but Josh Ozersky is different. Josh's rise to prominence came about with his book Meat Me in Manhattan: A Carnivore's Guide to New York, and from there he went on edit Grub Street for New York magazine while putting out other books on topics like Colonel Sanders and the hamburger. We first met Josh while filming our Michael White Munchies episode. Josh showed up to the shoot with a half-eaten sandwich and then proceeded to order some pasta before we headed to three more restaurants. It was then that we knew he was special. Beside his Falstaffian appetite, Josh's way with words is what sets him apart from other food people. When we approached him about where he would like to go, he immediately said that he would not leave the confines of Manhattan's East Village, and that he already had his crew in mind. So, with Mr. Recipe, Tommy Walker, and Chef Anthony Goncalves in tow, Josh took us to three of his favorite neighborhood spots. We could go on and on about all the characters in this episode, but you really just have experience it for yourself. Please enjoy all 20 minutes of this episode.

RIP Josh, We are diminished.
Ameen
This was one of the best Munchies episodes ever. I love all those guys!
He was the funniest. We used to Hangout in NYC tasting all kinds of food. RIP my Friend.
"I'm like a B list food personality, an A list writer and like a C list human being" - I always come back to watch Josh in this short, he is sorely missed. His humour is timeless, RIP.
Am I the only one who's constantly staring at that guys moustache
No. No you are not.
I can't watch anymore because of the moustache!!
Frankiee Crockett You're staring at it because of endless closeups. The filmer also noticed it. Munchies cameramen always notice weird ass shit like that and then get as much footage of it as they can.
Frankiee Crockett
Dali had that stache, too.
I don't want to assume he 'was inspired by' Dali, but the thought did come to mind.
It's disturbing on its own but the fact that the rest of his dome is completely hairless bumps it up to horrifying.
Just found out that he passed away. I wasn't the biggest fan of Josh Ozersky, but I like that he brought his own voice to the food party and it's a sad loss. RIP Josh Ozersky
+SethHesio Sad but he was kinda big
Do you know what his cause of death was?
+SethHesio he got an epilepsy attack in the shower and drowned.
He loved meat and brought things for us to learn from. I heard he did not die from a seizure. Some say he died choking on a rib eye.
He suffered a Seizure in the Hotel Shower and Drowned !!!
A real snapshot of a real slice of New York eccentrics. This is what a city should be. A place where anyone can be anything
Mr.Recipe is like that one strange uncle you gotta watch your kids around
I just woke up today and suddenly thought, ''i need to use that moustache guy's quote 'adds a little, 'cha cha cha'' to my vernacular
The man looks like he's hadn't had a bath in months.
they can't afford to do so.
Rest in peace Josh. I think about you all the time.
This is by far the best 'munchies', it is a shame that Josh is not still around.
i wish somebody someday would just beat josh ozersky up
Mr. Recipe perfectly encapsulates my feelings on what is wrong with NY nowadays: cartoonish, overtly eccentric nobodys who insist on acting like anyone should give two shits about them or what they do. RIP Ozersky. Your writing will be missed.
Josh was my childhood friend from Atlantic City. RIP Josh.
Mr Recipe: not just the man with the spice but also the man with the pipes!
id give a million bucks to the first lady that kisses the devil mustache dude.
damn shun.
id have to double it to 2mil since u really like him. deal.
I am so far removed from this weird niche universe, and i am extremely grateful for that.
This is one of the best Munchies. A really interesting chef/food personality who isn't into trendy food, but just good food by traditional family chefs. Love this.
the ending won me over to be honest
Recipe disturbs me...that stash...*shudders*
But it's fucking fabulous xD
This guy's not even a hipster. He's just fucking weird.
"And the false bottoms that characterize all weird people.' This is a brilliant quote.
Josh, Mr Recipe and co make a great team, hilarious, I could watch another 20 episodes of this ,
Still one of the best episodes of munchies
Next ... Watch Josh getting a bypass and fighting cancer, only on VICE !
Or...ya know...dead.
RIP Josh.
This was a 1st for the channel and loved only to read comments after and I’m saddened to hear of his passing.
11:05 "Forget about the food" LMAO I had tears in my eyes.
i have the same problem with all my shirts.
Why is the goofballs shirt off
Because brah, he lives in the zone.
hazer melon Because he has a food personality
still the best Chef’s Night Out ever made - nyc w a gaggle of fuckin freaks, nothing better
one of the best episodes
He has some amusing moments, but he's obviously one of those guys who battles low self esteem by presenting an overtly arrogant facade.
A decade ago he would have worked in a Record shop.
Say what you will about the man... he was a character...that is certain. RIP Josh Ozersky
I find it really hard to comprehend that some of these people really exist.
If you tell me this isn’t the best chefs night out ever... I reject your statement
I don't get it. There was some good food in the beginning but what was with the burnt charred supermarket stuff at the end. What was his point?
To be fair, all yanks and Brits I had met have charcoal instead of meat. They don't seem to like meaty flavour too much
He was trying to be ironic. He considers himself and his shitty friends the high point of foodie culture and opinion so cooking this shitty b-grade "meat" from the local supermarket chain (I don't buy his story about forgetting to buy the really nice marbled meat, this shit was all orchestrated for the cameras) and taking his shirt off trying to look trashy he thought he was being really ironic and clever for Vice.
That's the coolest episode of Munchies ever.
miss this dude a lot. one of my favorite food personalities. rip.
I love Ozersky - his gastronomical instincts are spot on.
"i only eat things with parents" Josh Ozersky, rip
the guy with the weird mustache is creeping me out
This is like an Endless Summer of George.
Coney Island freak show... These four words sum it up nicely
hi i'm josh i'm a pompous bellend pleasd 2 meet u
guys, be a little nicer. they may all have autism
Quantumlogik I think you nailed it. I bet he loves to play smash brothers.
Brilliant..! Could binge watch a weekends worth.
As a New Yorker I gotta say, this was a great video
"I only eat things with parents" hahaha
Sometimes, I feel like Vice goes out of their way to get some of the most dislikable hosts possible.
Mr. Recipe is a well cultured dude, big ups!
That josh ozerky has a way with words , comedy from start to finish
I think this guy made me dumber....
i figure out why these pretensions weirdos hang out together.
because regular people are cant stand their company for 1 minute.
"regular"
hahahahaha
Radickly Rick I like that he called the people at his “barbecue” weird, meanwhile he’s grilling bodega spam shirtless on the floor
RIP to a one of a kind voice in the foodie community
one of the best/funniest munchies yet. please keep up the good work.
so pretentious.
As always a fascinating documentary!! Thanks Vice!!!
12:55 is great! Some way with words!
A lovable episode. You will be missed, Josh Ozersky.
Josh Ozersky rocks! This is an awesome video ! I would love to go out on the town with Ozersky anytime!
SBF
These guys are a talented bunch, this episode is my favorite, real characters, my kinda guys
Easily the best episode of Munchies that I have watched so far.
I really miss Josh.
Me too. Discerning, unapologetic, talented writer, and a harbinger of food in it’s best and purest form.
freaking bout time - this is the only thing I wish to watch on the whole channel.
"i live in the zone..."
ok cool guy
I can't help but laugh when I see this big hairy bear man cooking meats on a rooftop. Rock on.
Im loving the environment in this video!
RIP Josh!!! ..... Will miss ur hilarious commentary.
He is so unapologetically weird that he is strangely loveable
How could anyone dislike this?
I won't lie...it was almost worth uploading this video just to see the comments. They're not nice, but they brightened my evening. Thanks, everyone.
RIP!!! Master of protein Adjudicator of restaurant!!!
You guys complaining about the mustache guy made my night
I found myself thoroughly enjoying this. Thanks Vice :D
THE best munchies episode. Anthony Bourdain's episode coming in on a not so close second.
Thank you Josh.
I thought this vid was solid. I think a lot of people don't understand the self-deprecating and severely strange characteristics of the guy featured. He's not asking is to like him. He didn't think we would and the whole "nobody came"scene spoke to that. When he was shopping it was for a meat festival that, ironically, featured the worst picks he could find. He stated it was the worst meat cooked the worst way with spices made from children's tears. So. Can it still be appreciated? I'm not saying he's a genius, and he may come off as pretentious, but he is awesomely odd and awkward. I can appreciate it.
love them old school pan sauces
He looks like the guy from Jurassic Park who turned off the electric fences.
u have reassured my faith in humanity, i wish you health and happiness
You know one thing I remember him doing before he passed away was collaborating on writing a Cookbook with John Tesar (Executive Chef at Knife Steakhouse in Dallas) !!!
Rest in peace.
I like people who wear their heart on their sleeve.
i like how the albanian guy is talking about italian dishes in an italian american accent using words in spanish and english
"heres the money shot" *goes blurry* good job
(for anyone reading the captions)
At 1:39 Josh doesn't say "you're off, you're off"--as it states, and which makes no sense.
What he actually says is "puerile"--which means 'childishly silly or trivial.'
(It's a really good pejorative vocab word!)
Probably one of the best munchies episodes. Why so many thumbs down?
one of the best videos i´ve ever seen
I don't understand why everybody disliked this man so much, I thought he was a pretty cool dude.
i couldnt stop staring at the mustache
I can't believe I actually watched the whole thing...
That ending redefined "gutter palette"
If I ever got into a fight with the guy with the mustache, you know which road I'm taking
transistorlatin brown?
The Barbone owner omg that man is amazing lmao
yes longer munchies videos please
I feel like this is the dude that would get mad in a restaurant and yell "DONT TOUCH ME YOU FILTHY CASUAL"
There is zero chance the man with the mustache has been laid in the past decade.
I love his personality.
gotta love the Eastern Promises reference!
