The great thing about this ad is that it has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the product - yet it sent sales soaring!
It's EVERYTHING to do with the product, you just need to look.
@@philjones45 Yes but you need to know that the purple is Cadbury's brand colour, that it's about chocolate about the same sort of colour as the gorilla, that the drum burst is supposed to mimic the explosion of taste. Only when you've seen it, read up on it and watched it a few times could you pick up the clues, and I gather Cadbury's didn't even put their logo on the end at first.
This ad was after Cadbury sales were hit following salmonella scare with Cadbury having to remove products from shelves... This was their comeback advert.
@@lorrainehall157 Didn't know that, interesting. It's still an outrageous jump in the dark though.
I'm smiling before it's even started. Everyone loved this advert

Ya boo
Apparently all these Cadbury adverts were from a load of new guys in the marketing department saying to the higher ups that Cadbury purple was so recognisable that they didnât have to actually advertise the chocolate in the ad đ
Try watching Phil do it live, it will blow your socks off.
I was just going to say that it's my favourite Phil collins song đ”
A WORLD-WIDE HIT.
Search for Phil Collins âIn the air tonightâ Hd Live âŠ.
Everyone smiles and nobody really knows why.
Its got absolutely nothing to do with chocolate but instantly became absolutely everything that defined chocolate đ
This was a national moment when it first aired. Everyone was talking about it.
The possibility of seeing this ad on the TV, back in 2007, kept us in our seats, instead of dashing out to the kitchen during the break to make a cup of tea, or cut a sandwich or two. It never grew old, had nothing to do with Cadbury's chocolate, but the ad did its work very well. Years later and I watch it with you today TWICE and it still had my undivided attention each time. Now that's a campaign triumph in my view.
Such an iconic ad here in the UK !
Ever since the ad ran in the UK I always remember the gorilla on the drums whenever I hear this song! Brilliant! đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
The smile on your face was exactly what we had when we watched this ad, way back in the day. I loved this ad.đŹđ§đșđž
Glass and a half of "Joy" in every bar. Gorillas love beating their chests... this Gorilla's "Joy" is beating on drums.
First time we saw this advert we had no clue as t what was being advertised until the very end. Probably one of the longest ads to ever be shown, but once seen never forgotten.
It is the colour of the background which makes it identifiable by most Brits as a Cadbury advert rather than what is in it. They have used that colour for over a century.
It is Pantone 2685C otherwise known as Cadbury Purple, and is trademarked.
Interestingly, when I used to travel by train from where I used to live I passed through Bournville railway station which is for the Cadbury Factory. It was painted Cadbury Purple.
Makes you proud to be British.
The whole railway station at Bournville, next to the factory, was painted Cadbury purple for years, not sure if it still is. I used to wait for my train to work standing next to a huge glass and a half of milk on the wall!
@@paulbromley6687 It used to, till US firm Kraft, bought it and moved most of the production out of the UK and then had the cheek to change the recipes, (which they promised they would not do, in the sale negotiations). The outcome of a US takeover meant the quality and flavour of many Cadbury products fell and were/are avoided by many Brits, to this day. Cadbury is still better than US chocolate, especially Hershey but is rated much lower in the UK than it used to be.
The ad aired in Australia too. Itâs one of my personal all time favourite advertisements.
I remember when this was first shown, so so popular, brilliant!!
Sadly, despite all the rumours, it is Not Phil Collins in the Gorilla suit. Great Ad.đ
Hi Connor, have a look at the Warburton Bakery ads, they're from Bolton, so a couple of them feature local lad Peter Kay, but others in the series feature the Muppets, Silvester Stallone, George Clooney, Robert De Niro, and the newest one with Samuel L Jackson. The guy in all of them is the company CEO Johnathan Warburton, playing himself.
Definitely would need the full versions of the ads, thereâs so many little nods in each of them đ
Definitely would need the full versions of the ads, thereâs so many little nods in each of them đ
Anything with Peter Kay in is hilarious
Itâs so true if you had a gorilla in your band heâd have to be the drummer.
You watched the right one in the end. This was when Cadburys was British. Best ad ever.
Other UK Averts to look out for:
The Rutger Hauer "Guinness" adds there are a whole series of them.
Cadburys Smash Robots (yes I know Smash is Powdered Mash Potatoes and Cadburys makes Chocolate but it happened).
Cadburys Milk Tray another series.
The PG Tips Tea Chimps.
Tango "You Know When You've Been Tangoed".
Bombardier Beer with Rick Mayall.
And of course the John Lewis Christmas Adverts.
And the Marmite "love it or hate it" ads, especially the breastfeeding one and the lifeguard one! (Warning - not for those of a delicate disposition)
you forgot the carlin black label adds with Mark Arden and Stephen Frost, my particular favourite being the dam busters one, but they are all pretty funny and the john smiths with peter kay đ
Don't forget the Nestle Rolo elephant as, or the Kit Kat panda ad.
If Carlsberg Did ??????? were fun
One of the best adverts weâve had in the UK in years.
This is a great advert and I remember it well when it first aired on television. I too donât understand the relevance of using a Gorilla playing the drums, but you can feel the energy the moment Phil Collins legendary music is played. The sad part is, Phil Collins can no longer play the drums in concert because of arthritis in his hands, and being much older now. How cruel life can be to be young but wake up one day and realise you are old. The mirror can be so unkind when it shows your ageing on the outside, while on the inside you still feel young, trapped in an old manâs body. Nobody can escape ageing, unless we die young from reckless behaviours or from fate. But the state of our minds determine how we come to terms with the reality of growing old, and how others see us and how we see ourselves.
Connor, Iâm happy to see your subs have increased to 67K. Youâve been hovering around 63K-65K for sometime, but hopefully you are on your way to reaching your next milestone, to reach 70K. Good luck! Perhaps, you might consider doing video blogs about your life because it adds another dimension to your channel and will help increase your subscribers. đ

My dad absolutely adored this ad too.
Sadly we lost him just a few days ago on 24 April.

Cinzano Bianca ads are worth a look from the 70s probably six all together.
it took them 6 months to train the Gorilla , he now works in a band playing Pontins in the season .

This was hugely successful in Australia as well.
I remember it coming on at half time of the rugby World Cup final were England were playing and they had put go England on the bass drum. Got a good laugh
Has he seen the Cadbury ad with the kids dancing eyebrows. That was ultra weird !
Funny though
Thanks for this reaction Connor. Havenât seen this ad in yearsâŠ..memories! x
Fyi, this advert was VERY significant for Cadbury. It is important to know context . The line "I've been waiting".. this advert was after all Cadbury products were pulled from the shelves after a salmonella outbreak. It was their big comeback to shelves after months without Cadbury. There was leaky pipe at factory which caused a build up muck and old chocolate and ingredients which fed the chocolate. This advert was letting everyone know Cadbury was back
You've got such a nice smile, now you should watch the "for mash get Smash" ad with the aliens, that should have you in fits
2003 I think. Every body was talking about it.
If I remember correctly it was just the gorilla without any reference to Cadbury when it first aired and it while after that Cadbury's showed their logo.
Glad to see you smiling after this. Gorilla's have nothing to do with Cadbury's products, it was just sincere silliness. Was nice when it was shown on tv to have a break from regular ads with voice overs and get to enjoy a great piece of music instead. Take care of yourself and have a great weekend!
A lot of British adverts didnât really have a message, they made them just for fun and entertainment. So it would stick in your mind. Guinness were famous for doing that years ago, John Smiths Bitter was another famous one, Bassets Wine Gums (hoots Mon thereâs a moose loose around this house). Great video, have a fab weekend Connor. đđ»đđ»đđ»đđ»
Several of the Guinness ads were timed to the length of time taken to pour a pint. One notable one had some bloke dancing around the glass until able to take a sip.
@@TheGiff7 haha I forgot that. Haha.
@Connor check out the Cadburyâs âdont stop me nowâ advert and âeyebrow danceâ advert
Connor have a look at the compilation of IRN BRU adverts , very funny.
If you let the ad run to the end, it says 'A glass and a half full of joy" - utter joy being the connection :)
I don't know why people can't seem to understand the message.đ
Brilliant ad. In uk we brew up when programme is playing and wait for ads to come on!đ one of the best ever was in a series of ads for hamlet cigars, guy in photo booth, you really must watch. Basically they saying however bad things are, a hamlet will make everything better. Must see!! (Im gonna try to find it now.
One of my favourite ads this is Cadbury the office workers on their chair dancing. I laughed so much.
You should check out the series of PG Tips Tea adverts with real chimps. They were hilarious!

The point of the advert is to show how eating Cadbury's chocolate makes you feel good
This came out the same time as other ads that never mentioned the product.
You should watch some of the classic Guinness adverts - pure genius!
Tick follows tock
So iconic - Cadbury, Phil, and yep - the gorilla LOL Made me smile from the first second you started the advert! :)
Anyone remember the Reebok adverts? Bellyâs gonna get ya!! That advert mustâve been from the 90âs, but still stands out as one of the best ever ads!
Fantastic advert! The intro gives me goosebumps everytime.
The Heineken ads of the 1980s and Stella Artois ads (especially âOld Manâs Last Requestâ are really funny.
Particularly the Heineken âDog paints the wallâ ad.
I remember the first time I saw this ad as a kid and my whole family just stopped talking and stared at the TV, If I remember correctly I believe it made the newspapers because everybody was talking about it and whether it was a real gorrilla.
Of course Phil did the drumming on this ! He had to wear one of those suits with spots on so the camera would pick it up..
The purple and gold on the wall behind him are the well known colours of cadbury.
They hired Garon Michael, an actor with experience in costume work, but not drumming. He practised the Phil Collins solo endlessly to get the right sense of a creature that - as Cabral describes âhas been waiting for this moment all its lifeâ. , x
Would give this a heart if I could. One of my favourite adverts and to see you appreciate it like you did made me grin from ear to ear. Thank you
There's a really good mechanical version at Cadbury World in Birmingham
The guy in the Gorilla suit is none other then Andy Sirkis. Famous for playing Golum in the Lord of the Rings films.
No. It starred the actor Garon Michael, in the Gorilla suit.
Segwaying (spelling check) to iconic music on CZcams I recently watched for the umpteenth time Tubular Bells 2 live from Edinburgh castle bout an hour, amazing
The live phil colins on the song gives you goose bumps .
So simple so effective and yet iconicđ
trust me it solds a lot of cadburys
Just makes you feel happy , the ad and the chocolate đ
I remember seeeing this for the first time and thinking WTH is this about and it just seemed to go on for ages. I didn't twig the background colour and when the Cadbury 'glaass and a half came a the the end I was even more confused. But as many have said below this is without doubt one of the adverts everybody above a certain age remembers. You should watch a compilation of the Irn Bru, Marmite or Skoda ads. Now they are laugh out loud funny.
If you think a drum-playing gorilla is random then try the Cadbury airport trucks with Queen's 'Don't Stop Me' and the Cadbury 'Eyebrow Dance' Advert
I expect also it was because they werenât shouting in your ears about their product promoting themselves , it was pure knowledge of an icon that didnât need words and the nonsense of a gorilla playing drum was the pure knowledge that it WAS NONSENSE đ€·ââïž
One of my all-time favourite adverts. So glad you enjoyed it - well done the Cadbury publicity Dept. P
I just love this guy's smile, he can brighten the dullest of days †..... and just for the record, he's got great taste in music, Phil Collins is a Legend.
still love this advert thankyou for showing it again. i love chimps and gorillas , all primates they are my spirit animal. Take care đđŽó §ó ąó łó Łó Žó ż
I remember first seeing this ad when it came out and just being blown away!
One of my favourite adverts đ«đŠâ€. One of the best adverts from here in the UK đŹđ§
After those serious Brit ads i think we all needed this to cheer us up regardless of how powerful those serious ads were.
I have seen this advert of UK TV many times but this is the first time I looked closely at it. Did you notice the attention to detail with the movements on the Gorilla's face? Makeup and animatronics or CGI genius. And this is just an advert!
Theres no relevance between the gorilla and cadbury, but that is what makes it so memorable as its not int your face.
It worked cadbury sales rose by 9% on the same peiord in the previous year.
I watch your channel because your genuine open and honest.
We all remember this advert and now so will you.
I know its minor, but what I find amazing on this ad, is the small real moves. One of which, to watch for, is the head tilt and small snort at a camera who is getting too close.
Imagine, when this came out we were all watching TV thinking 'what the hell is this???' lol
I remember seeing this the first time it aired. We were blown away it still makes us smile in the UK. Iconic.
Great to see you smiling again
I remember when this advert was first aired on TV ! And I can remember Thinking what a brilliant advert it was, and whoever come up with the initial idea, was a very clever person? And I have to say, this was the best advert I've ever seen in the last sixty year's? And I should imagine it must rank as the No1 advert ever televised on British television.
Made me so happy to see you react to this đ
Bizarrely when this advert first aired during the Big Brother final 2007 the gorilla was drumming to a completely different song. It was dubbed over by total eclipse of the heart.
czcams.com/video/xrGl4o7wRo4/video.htmlsi=bhWSscFCGPqFXGck
The Rutger Hauer Guinness advert with the dolphin was pretty much at the same sort of disconnect. But the whole series of them was pretty 'interesting'.
Now try the Walkers crisps adverts where we have our dear sports stars stealing from the kiddies!
hey Connor have you seen The live version of this track???? if not it's amazing..........
I was amazed on going to cadbury world by where i live in Bournville england when you go round its there still working its brilliant â€
Loved every second of this
I forgot how great that advert is â€
Haha that was me Iâm glad you took my advice. There are other funny Cadbury ones too I like the one with the two kids and their eyebrows
Be honest, when that drum break hits, who hasnât started air drumming? Anyone who says no is either lying or needs to relax a bit more!
One of the two best tv ads ever, the other one being the Rolo's elephant, try that one.
Superb this I had forgotten †thank you
Loved this one but checked out the Kit Kat Pandas ad from the 1980's
Good marketing is an art and it plays on the viewer's brain in many ways. The colour purple is associated with Cadbury, also the fact that Cadbury chocolate has a high milk content is all that is needed. We all remember adverts like this so the marketers have done their job well. A lot of the best British ads are brand marketing rather than individual products, as products can come and go but more frequently the brand is around for the long term. So if you want to buy chocolate you think Cadbury rather than of any particular individual product.
Thank you so much for this Connor. I've seen this ad before, and it always feels new when I see it. And it's always funny. #gorillasrock #Cadburysgorilla
Great video đ You got to ask yourself who or how did someone think up such an adđ
Cadbury released this advert after a salmonella scare with dairy milk which meant they had to remove it from the shelves... and this advert put them back on top and put Phil back in the charts!
Preemptive Jibb always!
When I hear this Phill Colins track I still see the gorilla!
Always smile when I see that ad.
Joy! This is a classic and I love it, complete with goosebumps.
When I saw the title, I thought this was part of the 'Cadbury Bunny Try-outs' series.
I also liked the Cadbury "eyebrows" advert.
The best advert ever made without a doubt.
