- It's time for Calico Ghost Town, then & now! Vintage Photos help tell the story of this abandoned silver mining town, which was then restored and turned into a theme park like attraction, and later handed over to the county of San Bernardino. See what the town was like in the days when Walter Knott of Knott's Berry Farm owned it and was building it up, and see how it compares to what's here now!
Normally I film at least twice a year in Calico but this year I'm lagging behind! Subscribe & check out the past Calico videos on this channel for even more adventures in the Oooold West !

The Sams Place find is epic !
I was thinking the same thing, Adam
Adam The Woo?
Dude it is so hot around the Mojave this time of year, you willingly stood outside here? That's dedication.
I had no idea it was technically a county park. The slanted house holds very dear memories to me.
I can’t get enough of these past and present comparisons!
That was a perfect history lesson of Calico. I enjoyed this very much.
I'm from Baltimore and my aunt took the family here and Knott's Berry Farm on our visit out west. I still have pictures from our trip in 1981 in books around here somewhere, along with brochures and a wooden chip from one of the vendors.
You brought back great memories!!! Thank you so much for the trip down memory lane with my 10 year old grandson. I wish I had money to relive my 11 year old experience with him.
I haven't been since I was 8 or 9 years old. I'm 25 now, I think it's time for a visit!
I love how Justin said the well dressed tourists must have turned off the side of the road to see what was going on. He can really paint a picture, and cares about all the details ❤
I've been there many times between the late 60s to the late 80's. Both as a Boy Scout on camping trips to a young adult searching for adventure (and abandoned mines to enter). I wish I had some photos to share with you but they were all lost while moving across the country. The video brings back a ton of memories. Thank You, Justin.
I know those mine cars were in use during the 90s. My grandma, mom and myself would take the stairs. My grandpa had mobility issues so he waited for the cable cars. I’m so glad you showed that.
I remember Calico before Walter Knott. The mine was always cold and as I remember there was only about three or four buildings that were open, ore cart tracks ( bridges ) were across the canyon to the other side going to several mines, Walter had them removed and the mine entrance were plugged for safety. Fond memories before Walter and progress.
This is the Best Calico Ghost Town video ever!!! You go to places within the town no one else can find i.e. Sam's Place, n inside the Maggie Mine hole which is a little creepy!!! You are loaded down with colourful information and Walter Knott was a great philanthropist with unending ideas and ways to get things accomplished!!!! Loved the Bottle House n the Train too!!! Attaboy, Justin Scarred!!!
When you started talking about the the lower parking lot. By seeing the cables & that area I realized. When my family & I went to Calico in the mid 80's. They use to have mining cars, That would take you up to the top to the town. When I watched your video, I did not know that Calico was even still open. I am glad to see it still is. Good job on this video. Keep up the good work.
WOW!!!! What a great story about your friend being allergic to shellfish n swelling up n sitting in the 115 degree car no air on so you guys had to take him to emergency room.!!!! That's a classic!!!
Great detective work, Justin!!! It's super cool that your interest in Calico is so sincere that you've been visiting n researching it so often throughout the years, finding the original 1960's entrance to the town was a ride into it in ore cars!!! How Cool 😎🤠!!!! Double Attaboy Justin Scarred,!!!!
Lovely tour and history! My family would visit calico often in 50s and 60s. I remember walking up the hill from the lower parking lot. I believe that was the only entrance back then. We would pack a picnic lunch and carry it up the hill. There were picnic tables in the ruins by the general store. Magical place then and now. Same is true for Knots Berry Farm.
Fantastic video. I loved your rapid fire delivery.I grew up in Barstow and Calico was our main attraction back in the 60's and 70's.Thank you for giving me back great memories.
Justin and Calico together again !
I live in Barstow CA. And I love Calico so much ❤️❤️❤️ it’s my favorite place to go and I take my daughter every Easter. 😁
Nice video! Always cool when you dig deep into classic roadside attractions like this.
Just watched this. Loved that you do the now and then Calico. As usual the history you show is so fascinating. As an adult I've driven by Calico and never stopped. The last time I was there was in the 60's with my family when I was a little kid. So thanks for the video.
I'm 61 now. I went to Calico with my family back in 1966 when I was 7. I honestly didn't remember very much, but this brought back a few memories. Thanks!
There's actually a campground at Calico which is literally right next door the ghost town and it's a great way to visit Calico and the neighboring areas. Just set up your tent, or RV or trailer, pay the fee and you're good to go.
One of your old time pictures. It was a photo op figure. My Dad and I had our picture taken at that same figure in 1967. Thank you for a lovely memory
Quite impressive. He spoke for almost a half an hour without taking a breath. Great job, Justin.
New video from Justin! Yay!
Love you bro... so happy when you post!
Amazing video
sitting here with a bad tooth in a lot of pain, i'm in pain, the tooth ,aside from being rotten , is fine, but i am smiling because of your vlog, you do a great job
Awesome video I like the old pictures vs what it looks like now !
I was just camping at Calico! I got home today! We decorated a trailer with my aunt and uncle, and we won the home decorating contest! My uncle was so proud, they planned 3 months ahead!
Justin, I love your passion for history. And I love that you can go to the same place over and over again and still feel excited each time you go.
You must be a reborn Olde Time Silver Snaffler! Really, something you are drawn to like this can be an echo of a previous life.
Man I love your channel. I can’t stop watching the quality history you provide. I’m glad I discovered it last night.
Haven't been there since I was a little kid. Thanks for the video.
Great Video! Love your tour, very cool!
I took that tram when I was a kid 1967 or do thank you for showing it .and keep cool bro . have a great week .
Someone is conspicuously missing! Keep it up, Justin!
Awesome as always!
Love how Calico has the same trash cans as Knott's.
Great work Scarred!
Had so much fun at Calico many times. Grandparents lived near Barstow. We always rode the ore cars up to Calico in the 60s. Loved it. Thanks for reminding me...lots of smiles here
Another great and informative vid!!
Thanks for the history lesson Justin
You need to write a history book. Telling stories of your adventures in historical places.
I remember stopping by there on our way to California on September 12th 2001. It was a great place to stop and check out. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing the Disney, Knott's and Calico Ghost Town videos!
I rode those carts/tram back in the 80’s when I was a kid. I haven’t been back since then. I need to take my kids next time we go to California!
Excellent work. I had no idea about that other entrance and tram.
oh my gosh yes i love knotts berry farm!
WOW THIS DESERT IS SO DESERTED!!!!!!!!
Yes a video for my birthday! Love calico and love these videos. It's like a birthday gift 😊
Pretty good Jimmy Stewart impression.
You did a great job on this video. I've seen all your Calico videos, and this is the best!!!
HAHA wow I wasn’t expecting the cameo appearance from Dr. R Rhea!!!! Thank you Justin, that just made my day. 😅
The original visit and video of that is still one my all-time favorite Justin moments.
Great Video Justin. It's 2 hours from our place too, and yet we have never been. Definitely need to go check it out 👍
Excellent video. Great how you had the old pictures to compare to today's Calico. Entertaining video!
Great video, very informative Thank you!
Another fun, historical video from Justin. Thank you!
Discovered the mine town with picks n shovels n brothels n booze!!! Awesomely funny!!!!!
Love the enthusiasm that you tell the story with. I love visiting the Mojave desert and Calico is one of my favorite places.
Great video and love the history of the ooooooooooooooooold west! Bought a cool t-shirt to support the cause. Very nice!
killin it at always. great video. sleep well..;.)
THE WILD WILD WEST!!!!
wonderful place a good video very good job thank you
I can't believe that the tram up the hill is abandoned. The only time I was ever there, back in 93, I rode it up and was fascinated by it all.
Super cool!
why dose this video have such low views!! It's awesome! Love your style Justen!! History and humor!
Always such great adventures, when the desert calls...you sure answer!
Love me some Calico, thank you Justin for all the fun you bring us all along~
Alohas Always~
another great video
I always learn something new from you! So awesome!
WOW! That was awesome info. Thank you Justin.
Great video!
Your videos are just awesome, especially enjoyed watching all of your route 66 collection 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
awsome presentation, dont forget to stop at the intersection at the 1950 Peggy Sue Diner.
The "Ore Cart" ride dropped you off at the statoion on top which was right near where the photogeaphy shop is today. . We took a few times when I was a kid but mostly we took the stairs. The upper parking lot was not open to the public in the 60's and 70's.
Great Job Justin, as always. You are rapidly becoming the new Huell Howser. And believe me, that is saying a lot. I love your research and enthusiasm. You show the joy that Huell used to. I think this is a great path for you!!!
Karl Schapel that’s what I was thinking too. Justin is the new Huell indeed.
I remember my mom and I went there back in the beginning of 1960 and there was a old man there there that wore a red shirt and jeans, looked like he lived there not sure what his name was, he had a white beard mama took my picture with him, they sure built that place up since I was there, wow..
Great video as usual! I especially love your Disneyland history and tips videos!
This reminds me of an old Scrooge McDuck story by Carls Barks called "Mystery of the Ghost Town Railroad" where Scrooge hides an important document in a bottle house :)
The Horseshoe Curve outside of Altoona Pa. that has a small tram to take people up the hill from the parking lot too!
great great great video did such a great job i just love calico when i lived in calif i used to go a lot thank you for this great job love ya
loved this vlog Justin! the abandoned mine ride should be brought back!
Awesome.
Awesome vid. I should drag my wife through a southwest road trip to see all these cool places you go.
Love your pop culture spin on historical spots like this. 👍
I remember it from the 60s the good old days.
In the early seventies, there was only a lower parking lot and yes, we had to ride a ore car up to the town. The town was all dirt roads, nothing paved.
I would go to calico as a kid...that place rocks (puns intended) funny how life was before the internet and phone technology...
Justin, with every bit of seriousness I can muster... please pitch KCET in regards to being the new Huell Howzer. We both know that nobody can replace Huell but you bring the same enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity and youthful “awe” that he brought to his adventures.
living in Ireland not sure i'll ever make it to the ooooold west so thanks for taking me there Justin!
I think it was in the 90s when they finally paved the streets of old calico. You ever think about doing the camp out ghost tours that they do their really fun and to hear the stories are great
I remember visiting Calico a number of times... staying once over night in the campground... and that “rock” I slept on that I couldn’t shift away from my back...
2020 - No Corona
I love your videos!! Also my family have been wanting to go soon😁
Love ur videos
I rode that tram entrance to Calico and I remember the Maggie Mine was a ride, not a walk thru. I was confused when I revisited a few years ago as we parked on the same level as the ghost town. Great vlog.
it was a ride? What year was this? I always thought it was a walk through
Before you mentioned anything about the "You're next" sign I was like "What does THAT mean?! It's so ominous" and then you mentioned it lmao
I went here with are dirt bikes ATVs and you can go out into the mountains and explore the mineshafts it was one of the coolest things I've done
This is a video of the longest sentence ever spoken!
Thumbs up Jus'.
I love love love this kind of stuff!!! We've been to Bodie. Go there!
