- Bodmin Jail (alternatively Bodmin Gaol) is a historic former prison situated in Bodmin, on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Built in 1779 and closed in 1927, a large range of buildings fell into ruin, but parts of the prison have been turned into a tourist attraction, and more recently another large part was converted into a hotel.
Bodmin Gaol was designed by Sir John Call and built in 1779 by prisoners of war, and was operational for 150 years, in which it saw over 50 public hangings. It was the first British prison to hold prisoners in individual cells.
The jail closed in 1927. Since that date, there has been no prison within the county of Cornwall.
During World War I, the prison was used for holding some of Britain's national treasures including the Domesday Book and the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.

I remember my Dad taking me here in the early 90's as a kid. Wow it has changed. I remember the block before it was a hotel they had freaky mannequins hanging out the cell windows. Great vid.

Excellent footage Matt diolch. We visited last week for a guided tour but could only get a self guided tour which was 10/10 the effects visually and physically were amazing wow worth every penny. Watching your vid afterwards was the icing on the cake. Cheers, North sheep 👍🏻

Great video of the jail never been there, but cycled past there several times, as i knly live 5 minutes away from the jail matt, also the old cells are now guest bedrooms which has 3 floors, but they were off limits to all of you that night

I visited there myself very recently . The first part of the tour, 'The Dark Walk', is incredible ! The holographic projections and effects are brilliant . If you get the chance, do it! Highly recommended 👌 The execution room is worth a visit on its own 👏👏👏
I have to admit it was better years ago . I don't like it. It seems they have ripped all the originality out of it and made into a fun fair. Great video and great drone footage with beautiful pipechoir music. As always fab x

16:17 those 4 cubicles are a treadmill, they’re in a cubicle so they can’t talk and they have to climb the wooden stairs that are on a wheel.

Bodmin jail one of my favourite places been visiting for years when down cornwall enjoyed the overnight ghosthunt with kirsten until 5am wonderful investigation .Thankyou for this video really enjoyed watching

Bodmin, my home town. I drive past the jail to the Camel Trail carpark to walk my dogs, Shame about the white elephant of the council owned car park opposite, now closed. It took a lot of open green space we used to walk the dogs on. As for the jail, never been inside.

A lot of restoration i am seeing but the original parts are still there a lot of it .. would love to go and see this .. right up my street been to the chambers in Edinburgh loads of times.
Matt, from your demeanour i assume you don't believe in ghosts.Even though that was a real jail it's still a beautiful building.
Them individual jail rooms could have been waiting cells for going up to the courthouse through that corridor whare the power station thing is now, what's at the other end of the corridor was there a court house next door or round about? These places normally have tunnels running underground to the court's, looks a cool place for a dayout love to see this all up n running!

in that courthouse part due to the skrim it looks like a peppers ghost effect with projection mapping like in some theme park dark rides

Body shaped cages like that at 50:26 would have been used as part an execution practise known as 'Gibbeting', in which after being executed the criminals rotting body would be publicly displayed to try and deter others from criminality.
24:00 and 24:50 and the court room on the tour, they project different scenes on to the walls, look`s good when they do it. Was there August 2021.
The stuff that went on in this place was barbaric i mean lets be honest a lot of the men woman and kids in there would have only stolen something or underage pregnancy or owing money such hard times back then .. a lot would have been bad but a lot of them innocent ...
Health and safety would be all over them if it was real barbed wire
VERY INTERESTING MAT, EVEN THOUGH I SPENT OVER 16YRS IN SCOTTISH PRISON SYSTEM, WOULD LIKE TO VISIT IT ONE DAY AS THE HISTORY OF PRISON IS INTERESTING, I HAD A OLD FRIEND WHO WAS ONE OF THE LAST PRISONERS IN SCOTLAND WHO GOT A REPRIEVED FROM HANDING.

Hate what they have done to the place. Regularly used to attend investigations at the gaol but before it was modernised.... much better then! Was lucky to be able to be in there on our own (2 of us) for the entire night Very creepy

Such a shame Bodmin jail ruined the cels are the navel wing not deters prison the hole in the wall pub Bodmin is that the court room is at Mount folly now called shire Hall the Russian millionaire Hotel ruined the listed building such a shame

Way too spruced up. Was there in 2007 before much of the “improvement “. Was much better. Authenticity trumps funhouse touristy feel any day. Disappointing.
It feels very touristy dosent it . I'd much prefer to see the jail as it was originally back in the day
