It's easier than you think when you know the feel that you want. It is not that complicated to have a repeatable and natural back swing takeaway that involves the perfect amount of wrist hinge without out having to think about it. Let's find out how

Alex fortey here. This is the Art Of simple golf. I wager that the majority of you, whether it's yourself or people you play with take the club on the inside in the takeaway. Why do we do that? Sometimes it's because of trying to get too much shoulder turn, but really that's one of the swing killers. Why? Because it involves a re route of your downswing that requires to either come over the top or whatever, you know, it's a weak position, but what also kills you is trying to over think to try and over consciously think how your wrists move in the takeaway.
If I was gonna tell you to throw something, you wouldn't think, okay, I've gotta hinge my wrist here. I've gotta do this, whatever. Okay. Golf a lot harder than throwing.
Okay. We can all agree that, but we need to tap into that natural instinct just a little bit more to see the substantial improvement in your consistency. We cannot manipulate.
We cannot over consciously try and force the risk to happen. And why does, if you consciously try and place them, okay, you are never going to repeat that action. And you might go on the range or whatever it might be and you think, okay. Yeah, I'm hitting my position. I'm hitting my takeaway. I'm hinging the wrists in the golf swing correctly. So when you get out on the course, it all goes to pot.
You see, we need it to be repeatable, easy and natural, but we also need a specific feel that you can utilize to give you the repeatable motion. But let me show you what you're probably doing wrong first. Then I'll show you how to fix it.
Yes, you want the club head outside, but here's the thing. If you are trying to take it on the outside and then hinge the wrist again, that is just way too conscious.
We have to feel all the weight of the club. We have to swing the club head. We want gravity to help us as it were. So we're gonna do it by two things. We're gonna do it by feeling a good grip, but very supple wrists. And like the forearms, the arms are kind of heavy in golf swing. This will help consistency especially for slow swing speeds and senior golf swings.
So when we do start momentum, we have flow. Okay. Not trying to swing like this, where we've got flow and momentum. Very, very key. The next thing I want you to do is actually as you, we can do it with your lead arm. Only what you're gonna do is push the butt of the grip down.
You're gonna push the butt of the grip down that way. And that will provide you the perfect amount of wrist hinge when you need it. Now, one of the key faults that people have when it comes to wrist hinge in the goal swing is sort of forcing it.

Yes I have subscribed I saw straight away that you and I think the same way I started having golf in 2005. Fi
The first pro I had a few lessons with wasn't really interested so I moved on and tried another and it was the thing and on it went until I finally got so fed up that I stopped playing outright then my buddy got me interested again. I found that the information that they gave me was very vague I never really understood how the club really works
Iâve had an awful take away for forty years - hands out club behind and never set on plane - if I try and just, let it happens this is what happens.I need to find a way to to set them properly on plane - will try this but am not hopeful
I'm just coming back to the game after 17+ year hiatus. Practiced now for two months. Trending 4.4 handicap. BUT I absolutely cannot figure out a backswing. Do a lot of work with wedges, and cannot for the life of me consistently hit the ball in the same direction. Straight, then push, then fade, then draw, then hook. Natural shot is draw - which I do NOT like. Want a power fade. Can you help me with virtual lessons?
This is best golf tip I have received in my 85 years of living.
Well thatâs an honor! Thank you and glad to hear it :) đđïžââïž
You're the best thing I've read in years....85 and still playing....thank you sir
What a solid lesson. I've been coached on wrist hinge before and this is much simpler than what's been suggested to create a proper hinge. Virtually effortless! I can already feel more snap. Thank you
One of the best lessons Iâve seen on correct takeaway and wrist hinging. Unlike many instructors, Alex keeps the golf swing simple, which is the best way to learn it. Too much analysis confuses and over-complicates the golf swing for most amateurs.
Iâm delighted to hear it resonated with you. Thank you!
such good videos! So simple and helpful and realateable and real. Helped improve my swing but also helped me to relax and enjoy my round a lot more, I was trying way too hard to consciously hinge the wrists since having a lesson and my shots were all over the place, since seeing this video i've gone back to being so much more consistent.
Perfect and delighted that itâs helping
By far the best tip Iâve heard in a long time. Like so many others mention, this will help you take out any other swing thoughts during the backswing and also during the downswing. After implying this Iâm hitting both my irons and woods 20-30 yards longer and way more consistently. The fats and thins are also gone. So thank you a bunch!!
One of the best instructional videos on wrist hinge. Nobody every teaches to push your hand down on the takeaway to hinge the wrist. Thank you.
Thank you kindly and glad it resonated. Let us know how it helps :)
Very simple. I love that itâs a feel and not a bunch of doâs and donât see going through the brain during the golf swing! Excellent!
Thank you and hope it helps!
Dear Alex!!
Thank you!!
So amazing that you are ao detail.
Always you brings my problem up, which I have been worrying.
You are so welcome!
I've been a category 1 golfer for 50 consecutive years but have struggled with wrist hinge since I don't know when! This video is very helpful and will try and introduce to my game. Thak you.
Great show. Getting kind of old but will try this next time out. Makes a lot of sense.
Another fabulous tip from the number one pro!!! Thank you so much Alex! Happy new year to you and your family!
Thank you kindly Alan. Right back at you!
In 20+ years of playing golf I have never managed to understand wrist hinge in relation to the takeawayâŠâŠ but this video has finally made it click! It has now led me to understand how to use the ground to push off and âswingâ with momentum rather than âhitâ.
The difference in power and accuracy is incredible- Iâm honestly 2 clubs longer and without the low pull hook of death.
Thanks so much Alex- this has genuinely made golf so much more enjoyable for me. đđŒđđŒđđŒ
Sooo good and so simple! This was the one piece of my swing that I couldnât quite figure out, but Iâm puring everything now. Thanks so much!
Glad it resonated!
Canât wait to try it. This is exactly what I am working on and WAY overthinking it. Am a mess right now but WILL get myself back on track. Thanks!!!!
Great to hear and let us know how you get on :)
Great video... nice, simple advice for all levels of golfers... explanation is clear and concise. Thanks for the video... Been struggling with the takeaway lately. This video definitely helps provide a concept to apply to my swing!
Exactly the goal. Keep at it and thank you!
Best golf lessons I v ever seen. Very natural movements. The Art of Simple Golf are the best headline for your short clips.
Thatâs super! Thanks and much appreciated indeed.
Fantastic video! IÂŽve spent hundreds of hours trying different kind of takeaways, because it feels like this part of the swing have been the nemesis of my swing. Last fall I tried to set the club earlier with a lot of right hand extencion, but this led to a series of (different) problems. Since january IÂŽve depended much more on left hand extencion and radial deviation, and this feels a lot more natural. Pushing the but end down with the left hand gives natural hinging and flow in the backswing, and it also adds to the dynamics by enhancing upper body rotation (or this is what it does for me). Thanks!
It sounds like you have got the feels right and doing what they need for you. Well done. Keep at it and thanks for sharing!
Alex, practicing this video, improved my game tremendously.
Thank you so much!
Perfect ! Keep at it ;)
I sliced the ball for years. I studied my swing and after seeing this realised i was hinging far too late which (after watching videos of my swing) caused me to open the face at the top and always fade/slice the ball. This video has âso farâ helped me hit much much improved shots. Thank you for explaining it so simply
Super and thanks for sharing!
You solved my takeaway/overswinging/ and overturning problems in one short video. When I'm on, I win a lot but sometimes it's hard to keep the proper consistency needed repeat it everyday. My scores are like 74, 78, 76, 80, 82, 73, 75, 81, etc. My inconsistent problems are that I don't always bring a repeatable swing to the course daily. This tip/lesson will give me a chance to to do the same thing every time, cheers!
I expect it will. Now remember to be specific in your visual and aim too. HUGE consistency factor that too many overlook. czcams.com/video/28MWwcPpoeE/video.html
Thx so much for this wonderfull tip, I was always 'searching' for the perfect placement of the wrists, impossible !! this tip helped me a lot !!!
Excellent to hear. Well done and keep at it
I've been working on this, vaguely, knowing my practice swing leads to an easy hinge of the wrists while my real swing, likely affected by tension, never ends up with a proper hinge. When you mentioned pointing the shaft down, I immediately realized that was the difference between my practice and actual swings. Brilliant observation, thanks for the video. Cheers mate!
Well Iâm delighted to hear that we budged you in the right direction. Keep at it
Great video. A lot of different content around wrist set and it can easily become over complicated. I was stuck in positions for months. Happy new year
Too many are. Happy new year and this should help your golfing endeavors!
This is a brilliant lesson. So clear and zero complicated. Easy to take with you. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great advice, I will give this a try this week. The timing of the video was perfect since I have been working on this.
Great! Let us know how it goes
OMG Alex.. brilliant man i finally got it. Ive always been a Wrist player for 40yrs then tried all these Methods.. now back on track using My wrist for Me. Cheers mate..thnks SO MUCH
Delighted to hear that! Thanks for sharing ;)
Thank you! I was trying to force the flat left wrist in the swing and now I know my natural hinge, which are my best shots and don't give me tennis elbow pain, is just fine.
Exactly! Know your swing and learn to modify your tendencies
Such a good video. Played some of my best golf last summer then started playing âgolf swingâ and the game worsened. About a month ago I did something similar to whatâs explained here and really just focused on playing golf again naturally and sure enough found my game again. Keep up the great work!
Well Iâm delighted to hear that. Well done for getting back on track and glad to have reminded/nudged you in the right direction. Iâm sure many lessons here and our online Ckub can help
Sounds so easy and natural. Canât wait to see what this does to the swing đ
This is the best tip Iâve ever used. After only 1 range session my ball striking is so much better, especially short game. Just played the best round of my life, and hit a short bunker shot like a pro. Itâs almost unbelievable. Canât wait to keep improving based around this tip
Well done! Thank you for sharing and Iâm sure we can help you keep progressing
Alex, thank you for a very simple approach to the wrist hinge. It worked right away and it works every time. I have always been a fan of the "kiss" approach. Keep the great videos coming.
Edd
Great video, so many Utube videos deal with the backswing and assume that you will put the wrist hinge at the right time and indeed do it the right way. Well done Alex
Cheers!
Excellent! Had to revisit as a refresher. Thank you!
Good to hear
This was a really great episode, I had never tried it until now. Many thanks!
Cheers Brad!
ThatÂŽs what i asked for Alex, thank you very much for doing this video!!!
More than welcome! Many folks need to clear up some confusion here :)
Wow this helped me so much. Helped me get rid of all the swing thoughts as well. I worked on keeping the club outside that it never felt natural lifting the club. Doing this just feels natural and Iâm shallowing the club on the downswing just naturally. Itâs pretty crazy especially since the amount of time and bad rounds Iâve had trying to be in the right position up top then âdropping the handsâ
Yes exactly! Youâre not alone lol! Keep at it đđœđ
Your videos are great, and the way you give instruction IMO is great too because it's easy to follow. Cheers from the states!
Very much appreciated and glad it resonated with you. Iâm in Louisville Ky btw :)
Its the "feels" that you talk about that have helped and made my game more "enjoyable"..before my head was wracked with too many technical swing thoughts that actually bounded up my game...thank you for your advice and counseling (if you will) ...lol..
Always here ;) thanks for the feedback and gals youâre with us
Great concept! Gets the shaft vertical and traveling to a good down the line orientation without having to think of positions. As long as I properly turn my shoulders club head momentum sets the shaft
Exactly! đđïžââïžđ
This is something that has bothered me for a long time. Thanks for explaining this so concisely.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for these vids, I watched your video on no shoulder turn with the driver swing and it really helped ! I think I have the same problem
With my irons ! Great videos! Thank you !
Glad it helped!
That works its really easy you are correct every one i play with ranging from chopper to very good players obsess about what you showed us in not long at all. Really the tempo is as important like you said flow is the key. Great stuff as usual!! k.
Thank you Ken ! Let me know if it helps
I subscribe to 4 other golf channels, without bashing them, they over complicate the golf swing. Just stumbled onto your channel and in 2 videos, Iâve corrected 2 major flaws in my swing. Thank you sir!
No need to bash! Itâs why we do what we do:) glad it resonated and very happy to hear you are with us now ;)
To me, this is one of your best videos. Really simple, really helpful and universal. Good work Alex!
Well I certainly appreciate that. Thank you and hope it helps you and others looking to simplify this annoying part of the confusing golf swing;)
Robert, I was just thinking the same thing. Such a simple swing thought.
Except none of it works on the backswing you still want to hinge
@@chipchiperson679 for you maybeâŠpart of learning is training out of bad habits.
@@bkuyk9317 according to all these youtube lessons that are touted to work, you shoukd be a pga pro by now eliminating all your swing flaws.
This looks easy and simple. I am going to practice right now. Thank you.
Let us know how it goes
Your channel is one among my favorite golf channels. It is simple, easy to understand and applicable to practice in driving range.
My problem in take away is over rotate my hips (& my shoulder) which comsume my energy & power when I start to down swing. What kind of drills to solve that ?
Thanks
Simplicity at its' best...TY Alex!!!
More than welcome sir!
Great tip, thank you. Happy new year to you.
And to you!
Thank you. Amazing video. Had a lesson today and after seeing my swing , the pro said i had no hinge. Trying to chip with just the right hand got me hinging. And pushing butt down has been given to me as my drill. This video backs it up.
I also do feel very manipulative when i hinge by butt down and try and turn. I can do 1 and forget the other . ..
Will try the one arm swing if i get stuck. Very excited to find a fault and the journey to improve it.
Excellent!! Keep at it but donât get too focused on positions.. keep the flow đïžââïž
Perfect demo & explanation. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very practical advise! Utilitarian, and effortless indeed! No need to smash or rip the ballđ
Exactly! Thanks and keep at it đïžââïžđȘ
I think this is your best video. It is so darn simple!
Well Iâm delighted to hear that đïžââïžđ
Such great info, your tips are inspiring me. Thanks Alex.
Delighted to hear that and thanks for being here:)
I'm just learning and everything you said resonates. I've tried millions of just do this and at the time it was meaningless because I wasn't at that stage of learning. As I mature in golf I figure I need feels and the swing is just finding the natural geometry of body to swing the club unimpeded. You shouldn't need a millions swing thoughts if you have the right idea swinging. This is currently where I am, using gravity forces to fling the club per say. My last epiphany is about lag, it's simple. If you move your body in front of the ball during the backswing you will hit down on the ball and get lag. It made me understand why lag is good also. You always hit ball then turf, with the secondary thing being you deloft the club. Both lead to distance and consistency.
The pros are all in the same moved over lagged position at impact not because they are trying to make lag and hold the wrists etc. They don't think about lag they just end up with it.
Very well said and good observations. Keep at it and yes. Simple is key. Glad you have found your swing feels that do well for you
Wow that is so well explained. I can't wail to work on this. As I have gotten older lost a little flexibility I have been looking to play better without getting too technical.
Wonderful thanks! Let me know how it goes !
You pinpointed my problem - focusing more in technique than feeling. I'm a range pro, but sadly not on the course. Will take your advice to the studio next week. Been trying I'm my backyard today, but apparently without balls đ
Hope this helps but remember to practice with different targets and shots. Rehearse not just practice. Also see some of the video we have in on course like aiming and what to do before a shot
In a world full of anxiety and stress, it's imperative for us golfers to leave all that behind as much as possible when we get to the course and when we practice. Practice, drills and calmness of the mind are the keys to a great round, and your style of simplicity, flow, momentum and feel, are perfect in this over anxious, "overly conscious" game of golf.
Very well said... perhaps I should get you to do a video on that lol.
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf Lmao. Oh No, I'll leave that to the experts like yourself, maybe it will inspire a future video though. The concept of this reminds me of championship boxers, who are extremely focused, yet always attest to calmness and being relaxed as key to their great success,
Anxiety is definitely the number one swing killer for me
Thanks Alex great video well explained. I have been struggling with backswings I have about 5 different ones and I can't seem to settle. Wrist hinges and natural sounds really good as I'll give it a go. đđđ
Cheers and let us know how it goes
The momentum practice with left arm really made sense to me in this video. Thanksđ
Happy to help!
This is the best advise on takeaway I have seeing, thanks mate
Glad you think so!
This is the first video I have seen where I realized an immediate benefit in my swing, how great a feeling. Thank you
Well thank you for sharing and Iâm sure it will keep helping:)
So hard to find a lesson on the FEEL like this. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Great lesson. I have struggled with when and how to hinge my wrist.
Well let us know how you get on:)
I'm like most golfers in that at address I have about 20 golf thoughts going through my muddle brain. You tip to push down on the handle has been miracle. For what ever reason this one thought rules all others. This thought is now my "precious". I was hitting the ball solid with good compression.
Thanks for letting us know and glad to hear it's doing good things already! Remember though... You must focus on where you want the ball to go.. and the feels to do it. Not the other way round always. Keep at it!
Great video. Itâs funny, when you are younger - you donât think of the mechanics and âpositionsâ to be in but as an adult - itâs what you think is the safe way to repeat because we donât play as often as we did when we were younger.
This video brought it all home. Brilliant !!!
Too true and thank you!
Exactly! When I played in my 20s I just swung the club and if I had a good grip it all worked. Now I'm old it becomes too mechanical and rigid. I played yesterday and that's how it felt, just awful. Alex's natural hinge and flow is my goal. Also I get it going well in practice once I get on the course, tension makes it fall apart...
What a game changer!!
Many thanks Alexđ
đïžââïžđđ€·đ»ââïž
Looks good and it felt good after practicing it. Thanks
Excellent!
Very informative Alex ,thank you đđ„đšđŠ
My pleasure!
Great video and explanation. I'm new to your channel but just liked and subscribed. I feel like my takeaway has been my biggest problem in playing consistent golf. The days I let mit feel more natural and don't force my wrists to do anything, the better I play. Thanks for the great video and keep them coming!
Well Iâm glad youâre with us! As a rule itâs not about positions, movement and flow is your friend for repeatability:)
Makes sense! I will give it try
đ
Thanks for saying it's OK to hinge the wrists via extension. I ended up doing it this way as having played cricket it felt much more natural, but literally all other videos only speak of cocking the wrists. My strike improved no end even if it means having a shut face at the top of the swing
Hinging via cocking the wrists and rotating the body just felt very alien and my timing on release was really hard.
THE BEST wrist hinge instruction! Simple Repeatable Reliable.
No more countless swing thoughts even before takeaway.
Do you have similar instructions for driver?
CheersâŒïž
Excellent tips,thank you.
My pleasure!
Simple and helpful, thanks.
Thatâs the goal
Great lesson and well delivered!
Cheers and glad you liked it!
This channel is fantastic. In a sea of âhow toâ golf channels this one goes beyond basic âwatch me do this, so you can do it tooâ stuff.
Delighted to hear that it resonated with you and itâs exactly the goal of ours! đïžââïžđ
Definitely taking this to the range thanks buddy.
Good to hear!
I think this will get me back on track to being a better ball striker. Thanks
Let us know how you get on
i was almost trying to feel like bending my wrist back behind me and now that feel of the forearm slight rotation and pushing the but down have made it a flow and calm move
Great keep at it
This is EXACTLY what happened to me. I was messing with my wrist hinge and wrist bowing, wrist twisting etc and felt good on the range. Then I went to the course and either blocked shots or hooked shots. I decided that I was badly overthinking
Happens to many! Hope this cleared some of the noise ;)
Great! itâs just as i mentioned the other day about the one armed swing and how it frees things up ( well for me away ) as a slicer i used to hit little one armed shots when practicing and would see a natural drawer insteadâŠ.
Excellent. Great way to help the sequence.
Wow âŠ..this really works Iâve played my best golf today thanks
Great and thanks for coming back to let us know! đïžââïžđ
Best tip of 2022! Untangled my iron play....BIG thanks!
Delighted to hear that! Well done and glad Iâve budged you in the right direction
The tip was very good! Thank you. Almost more impressive was the freedom in your wrist movement when you swung the club back and forth in a little half swing. That look was almost like a well oiled hinge and does not resemble my wrist movement, which I hinder for some reason. I shall practice this style. Thanks again!
Well thatâs a kind observation and you can do it too! Let us know how you get on?
Thank you, I will try!!
Hope you like it!
I love the importance of the feeling in your lessons âŠ
Itâs key for you and everyone else to find it and get it :)
Wow , thanks for making it so easy
You are so welcome! đïžââïžđ
Great lesson, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I had previously gotten the tip to push down with the left arm going back. However, pushing down with the left hand to lower the end of the grip is a great visual. Also, the reminder to try to be smooth and natural rather than too mechanical resonates with an 'overthinker' like me. Thanks for the tip.
0:05 I have spent 40 years dragging the club back with my hands so my swing is doomed from the start. I've tried everything is there anybody out there can tell me why?!
What a difference. I didn't even have a wrist hinge before. .quality of strike and distance really improving thsnks
Excellent to hear that and keep at it ;)
Great vlog!. This is the move that distracts other things in my swing. I would like it to be useful to all my swing degrees, that is why I think this motion makes sense!.đïžââïžđžđȘ
Cheers and it sounds like this is ging to help. Try and let us know!
Really good advice. Thanks
My pleasure!
Excellent vid, well delivered
Thanks and hope it helps!
Another great video! Thanks.
More than welcome!
Perfecto Alex! Thank you my good man

This is the most important part of the swing. This will determine your swing structure. Very rare of a golf tutorial video showing or teaching this particular part.
Well thatâs much appreciated thank you!
