  • Campervan Conversion / EP02: Roof Rack & Awning / Camping in the Rain
In this video, I install a Rhino-Rack roof rack (snp.link/bb8d9c25) with Vortex cross bars and a Yakima 8 foot SlimShade awning on my high-roof Mitsubishi Delica L400 Space Gear camper van. The video covers roof rack selection, awning selection, removing the gutter trim from the Delica L400, installing the rack feet and cross bars and installing the awning. Finally, we go camping in the rain to see how it all works out. Full van conversion playlist here: • Camper Van Conversion ...

It is absolutely wild how long and hard I searched for any amount of information on how to removel these trim pieces before I just applied brute strength and broke something.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Glad I could help! The trim geometry is not obvious, but once you figure it out, it's not too bad. Still need to cut through those adhesive pads though. I broke at least 4 clips.

Careful in shopping mall parking garages now with the rack... My delica barely fits in some places with no rack.
I wish more accessories were available for the L400 but Japan doesn't hold on to older vehicle models for long and there aren't enough in Canada for retailers to provide parts. (I am in Nova Scotia, far away from BC!). 🙂

Yes, my L400 high roof is 7ft 1in / 216cm tall with roof rack and side-mounted awning, and 8 ft / 244 cm tall with roof box. I haven't hit anything with it yet, but have had two close calls.

When it rained, did you get water coming in between the awning and the car above the sliding door?
We want to install an awning but are trying to overcome this issue

I mounted my awning on the side of my roof rack using a Yakima side-mount adapter because I am height limited where I park my van at home. So yes, rain could come down between the roof of my van and the edge of the awning and into my sliding door. But this is why I developed my quick-install "mini awning", shown in the video. This mini-awning covers this gap to keep the rain out. It is also useful by itself if it's raining but I don't want to take time to set up the big main awning. It still keeps the rain out of my sliding door even by itself, unless the wind is blowing violently.
