Six Weeks of Free Camping in Maine

- In this video, I camp for free in both the western and eastern areas of Maine. Also, I talk about why I chose the nomad lifestyle.
I drive an SUV. Her name is Bailey. We've been on the road since 2018. Her tiny interior challenged me to make room for the simple tools that support daily life. Materially and emotionally, everything got simpler once I started to live with my stuff and not just stow it. Along the way, I got rid of the overly-heavy stuff, discarded the not-used stuff, and tossed the might-use-it-one-day stuff. I tore down structures I thought necessary for daily living. And I created a life worth living.
In total, I’ve lived 70 years. When I began to travel, I was old, inside, and out. Now, I'm a four-year-old nomad with greater perspective, ever-expanding sources of spiritual awareness, and renewed physical strength. Each new day, I wake with anticipation rather than foreboding. An introvert, but never shy, one of my energy sources is solitude, but I no longer retreat from people for fear they will drain me. Nor do I cocoon myself from the physical and emotional pain of aging.
Life was always a journey. How I walked it was the difference between content and discontent. These days, my four-year-old legs are meandering a different path, and I am content. I live out of the automobile, Bailey, who serves many purposes, but primarily two. She is my cozy bedroom and one of many tools that support my wanderlust. I've come to see her as the heart of my ancestral home. And what a mansion! Spacious, well-appointed, and magnificent is my birthright, Mother Earth.
Good for you!🙏🏻❤️🇺🇸
This video has captured so much of the new England charm especially at the change of season. 🙏❣️
Good for you! We are almost 69 and have a campervan and loving the travel, free camping when we can get it, and just being outdoors. We will be in Maine for 2 weeks in the not-too-distant future. Very excited.
That is awesome! My trip to Maine was one of the most wonderful and adventurous journeys that I've taken thus far. I plan to return sometime in the Fall this year. Two places I want to revisit: Moosehead Lake and the town of Machias. Enjoy this leg of your journey!! Safe travels, my friends.

❤
New subscriber. I'm 46 and have been a nomad for 8 years. It's a great life and I should have been doing it much earlier. Congratulations on your discovery and many more years of travel.
Thank you for taking me along, I loved it.
I admire what your doing. I spent 12 years full timing in 3 different MH’s. But I left 7 years in AZ and bought land in Northern Maine and started in on another project. Part of me wishes I’d stayed in MH’s and free.
Happy birthday! Lovely lady. I am 61 now, married, but if i were alone, i would love to do what you're doing. Who knows, maybe someday I will. God blessyou in your travels.
If you ever get a week or two alone, you can do it! I "practiced" for a long time before I became full time. Take care and Happy Holidays!!
Just found your channel from facebook. Enjoyed and binge watching lol.
I spoke with you at a rest stop on the river. I have a camp kind of near there and was letting the dog drink and swim. I am F 62 yrs and like traveling but not as much as homesteading and my own acres to care for. You wander with out being lost. Lol I never get lost in my home woods but I surely would traveling like that.
Absolutely beautiful!1💛

I love love love your pictures. I've watched this many times but finally commented! Hello friend 😊
Thank you!
Gorgeous photos! I really enjoy videos from that neck of the woods. My spare tire is under my platform bed and I agree - I think I'm going to put mine in my roof car carrier. Thanks for such a great video. Very informative and learned a few things from you. THANK YOU!! See you on the road!
Oh, thank you! I've changed my mind about the spare, though. I’m in Florida now visiting my brother who is helping me with upgrades to my AWD, SUV. I had all-season tires, which served me well and still had 10,000 miles of warranty and a lot of tread remaining. But I went ahead and purchased new.
I rotate and have a wheel alignment done every time I change the oil. I also have an air compressor and regularly check my tires to ensure they are all evenly balanced with the same PSI. I think that despite the rough roads I often take, my tires have fared well because of consistent maintenance.
Even so, as I mentioned in the video, this past year I had a flat after navigating over some rocky, high-desert terrain. What I thought after that experience was that I wanted all-terrain tires. What I've learned since then is that I would be sacrificing fuel economy and a smooth ride. So, I stuck with all-season tires. I purchased five of them and an additional rim so that I don’t have to use a small donut tire, or immediately purchase an emergency replacement tire different than the others on my vehicle.
I wasn’t sure that it would, but a full-size tire and rim fit into the spare tire carrier located beneath my vehicle. Now I can change out a tire and wait until I get to a location where I can purchase another same make replacement from a vendor of my choice.
That hard-won off-road experience in Utah also taught me that I needed a couple of other things to assist my 69-year-old self with changing a tire. I bought an extra jack to lift the back end, which makes removing the spare much easier. And I now carry 2, 2×6 boards to support my jacks in sandy areas, and an impact gun to turn the jacks and remove the lug nuts. Hope this helps! And thank you for subscribing!
@@FreedomToRoamBySusanHare Thank you for sharing so much information. I haven't been out west yet, but I have heard a lot of stories about flat tires in rough terrain. I'll have to decide what to do about my spare. Thanks for sharing!
What a brave person you are! Awesome video
Thank you, Jon! And thanks for watching!
You remind me Annie and captain David BC
Beautiful!
What were the dates of your trip through this area. The fall colors are gorgeous!
Thanks!
Thank you! Mid-September through early November 2021. I'm returning this year around that same time.
Hey just wondering how did you find all of these places. I have been looking for free campsites and feel so lost! It awesome seeing a woman out there doing what I hope to do one day!
Thank you I researched free campsites, Googling most everything. Plotted my routes and printed them. I visited four counties. For each county, I had a plan A, B, and C. Some roads were not accessible but most were. One phone app I use is freecampsites.net. Have fun with your adventures!
69 and doing this alone! You go girl!
Almost 72, now. ❤ 😂 Still loving what I do. Thank you for watching!
That is a really good video! I love the music. Where did you get the music from? I would love to know if you have ever felt scared because I would love to do what you are doing.
The music is part of a bag of tools offered by my editing software, Filmora. Yes. I've been scared. But when that happens I can leave if need be. My vehicle is secure at night. I can access the driver's seat without leaving my vehicle.
Thanks!@@FreedomToRoamBySusanHare
