    The one soldier in that clip (French subtitles) commented that he drove a tractor before the war and that made the Leopard easy to manage for him. Neat! Later, another soldier comments that they've already been in battle with the tank and that the Russians have suffered a lot of casualties as a result of his work. The narration comments that the tank can engage targets out to 3.5 to 5km.

    Not Spanish subtitles, french ones. Contrarily to what you say,the soldier says that the leopard 1 is very modern, much better than what the enemy has, that it can fire between 3.5 to 5 kilometers, that it's tricky to drive in the snow, but he was a tractor driver before the war, and he manages.
    He continues saying that it's very good to fight with this tank, it already had war missions, and destroyed many other tanks of the other side.

      Also heard praise of the Leo 1 earlier, saying it is fast and has a good prescise gun. Like Denys says it is not the best armored, but it is way cheaper than more modern leo2, and also simpler to maintain. No tank wants to go head to head with other tanks, it is all about getting those first shots in on the enemy. With drones taking over the battlefield, being concealed becomes more and more important. Surely longer range and better accuracy can outweigh thicker armour. All tanks seem to go kaboom when hit from drones from above :-(

      Even still the Danish army did some live fire testing on one of their Leopard 1A5DK's while the engine was on and it was fully armed, how survivable it was even against the Leopard 2's 120mm gun surprised them a lot.

    American tanks have a defensive profile. They're meant to start up an incline then drop their gun down to target the enemy. This means most of the tank is hidden behind the incline and is hard to target directly.

    Hello Denys,
    I'm a Brazilian military junior officer (lieutenant) and I work with Leopard 1A5BR, I would like to extend some comments about the tank that I believe most people wouldn't take into consideration.
    In the Ukraine war, tank-on-tank combat is rare. Instead, tanks are mostly used to target infantry or armored vehicles from maximum range. In this context, optics and maneuverability are more important than armor. Tanks need to be able to target the enemy with good thermals/night vision and retreat quickly before the enemy artillery targets them back. The only disadvantage of the Leo 1 is its caliber (105mm), which has a smaller range than the 120mm or 125mm. However, given how poor most Russian optics are, it is unlikely that they are firing from farther than a well-modernized Leo 1 could reach. Since no tank can survive an artillery hit, armor is not as useful.
    The Leo 1’s logistics tail is a blessing for the UA army generals. It is lightweight and easy to transport on UA infrastructure. It requires much less logistical support than any modern MBT. This is why we often see it working together with Abrams. By pairing up the tank that requires the least logistical support with the one that requires the most, the generals can optimize their logistics and improve their operational efficiency.
    Also about that picture of the T-62 that looks like a T-90, that's not a thing, I bet my ass that's a photoshop, there are soo many wrong things with that picture that my best guess is that it's just a T-62 with photoshopped random shit in it.
    P.S: Excuse my English.
    P.S²: I'm not fighting in Ukraine, thus I could easily be wrong in judging the scenario.

      @@usbroke4667sure the Bradley is a troop carrier but it's main purpose is to cover the infantry against other IFVs and even tanks. That is the same armor target which the leopard needed to fulfill at its time. The reason why the armor is so light is that missiles would destroy it anyways and tank VS tank combat is very rare. At the time armor was pretty much pointless against AT weapons.
      The Leopard would be escorted by dedicated missile carriers with high performance ATGM. It was only in the late 80s that technology allowed armor to be effective again and therefore the Leopard 2 was designed with a different philosophy.

    Regarding the Leopard 1A5, it isn't a bad tank. Ukraine will need to get some suitable tactics for its strengths and weakness (the excellent fire control can help it operate as an all-weather and night sniper, hitting other ground targets from a distance).
    And its relatively light weight means that it can go where Leopard 2 and similar heavy MBTs cannot enter due to their weight. Heck, even a T-34 if it was the last tank on the battlefield, it would rule it. If Germans and Ukrainians have developed good tactics for such an agile tank, it remains to be seen.

    The Leopard 1s have 105mm gun (L7A3 or L7A4). This is good because it means more ammo can be available since it doesn't use the better, current 120mm NATO standard. A DM63 shell can kill older T-72s within 2km and do serious damage at range. Ukraine doesn't do a lot of Tank-Tank and the newer MBTs will be used for that. 10:01 You completely missed the 1A5 can be used as a sniper or ambush tank. For that role, it's much better than any USSr/russian tanks! It also is extremely good if you need tanks to do flanking maneuvers.
    Of course, if you use it to rush well-defended enemy positions head-on, then you are doing it wrong. But when it comes to value for the money this is far better than Leopard 2's, Challengers 2's, or Abrams. Also, it's lighter making it easier to transport on trucks or trains, and giving it the ability to pass bridges too weak for the other western MBT's to pass, also making it less likely to get stuck in the mud. Another advantage is that it is extremely easy to maintain.
    As I told you from when they were first announced, you underestimate it greatly! Though I hear you have soften up a bit now. But those 1A5's are likely to prove far more important than Challenger 2's, unless the UK should decide to send them all, and compared to the Abrams unless they decide to send a lot more, anyway.
    I can't wait for the first videos of them actually proving their potential to come out, I'm sure it will change most people's minds about them so that they respect them just as much as I do.

    I would argue that with the prevalence of Lancet and ATGM, that armour isn't going to save you anyway. The Leopard I was also made exactly with that kind of assumption in mind, that's why it has a paper thin armour but good gun and optic system.
    Ideally, (and practically), you wouldn't be facing the enemy tanks in a push, or at least not in the position you would be in a tank duel. It's really not that important for you to be defeating T-72 1v1, you would never fight 1v1 but even then, it can beat the older Soviet tank under the right condition (i.e. when they were cut off from recon support, or during night battle)

    • @mwtrolle
      @mwtrolle Před 6 měsíci +5

      the 1A5 can handle a T-72 well enough 1v1 if need be. As long as it lies in a camouflaged position and can chose when to engage and get the element of surprise, it also is extremely good for flanking maneuvers if need be. The armor is light but not paper thin, and actually, it has some advantages, it's strong enough that HE's most likely won't do that much damage while armor-penetrating projectiles can pass right through without doing much damage unless it hits critical parts. It's not that likely to get hit and it results in a jack-in-a-box effect as we see with USSr tanks, the danish army did live-fire testing of it, fully fueled and armed and it took much more punishment than anyone expected.

    • @e21big
      @e21big Před 6 měsíci +3

      @@mwtrolle Yeah, that's true. I used the term "paper thin" but that's mostly in the context of the modern tank. It's still a full on tank armour, not like a light tank or a tank destroyers that could be destroyed by an IFV cannon to the face. But it's also not going to survive anything designed with anti-tank in mind. It's probably vulnerable to even the old RPG-7.
      Which again, is the design choice of the era when you don't expect to survive a direct hit anyway (which is also the rule of the game today, so long as the crews survive, that's all that matters)

It offers superior protection against HEAT rounds and shape charges, and completely shatters kinetic penetration sabot rounds, so really it wouldn't even feel anything any Russian tank which would shoot at it, IF whatever a Russian tank shot at it could get past the Trophy system. Yes but the armor still couldn't follow them. It's not the way it works in war. Everything has to advance together or things will fall apart.

    Subtitles are French, not Spanish. Anyway, it's very good news. Leopard 1A5 are indeed very old and may not be sufficient by themselves. Also the cannon is not superior to the newer Russian models, but as a back-up and assistant to Abrams or Leo 2, the Leo 1 can be a valuable asset by adding some mass to an offensive. Also Leo 1 is said to have decent maneuvering capabilities.

    T72s in videos I've seen have been having difficulty landing hits even at close range. A well-fought Leopard 1 could do well, but yes they have to have some sort of infantry screening or work in coordination with more modern tanks.

      Agreed. I suspect that it has a lot more to do with the Russians lack of proper training than any flaws in the T-72 design.

    • @stuartbailey9287
      @stuartbailey9287 Před 6 měsíci +1

      The Leopard 1 was never designed as an offensive breakthough tank. It was a cold war tank designed round mobility and speed (inc speed backwards) rather than armour to help protect Germany from invasion by massed Soviet armour. Basically fire a few shots, retreat to next position, repeat. Its L7 105mm gun and lack of armour means it is outclassed in head on Tank on Tank fights but esp if updated with night fighting equipment and used as per design intention its a really handy support vehicle esp for Infantry formations on the defensive. Which actually seems to be the main use of Tanks on the modern Ukraine battlefield dominated by artillery and drones. Also being a lot lighter it can go across bridges and in other places wear modern MBT like the Abrams can not go.

    • @mikepekarek5895
      @mikepekarek5895 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@stuartbailey9287 the Leo1 design can be either defensive or offensive. At the time, before Chobham armor, missiles like TOW made any practical thickness of RHA steel useless against those missiles and some new tank rounds like APFSDS. By minimizing armor weight you bought better gas mileage and higher mobility. Movement speed and ability to cross smaller bridges has its own protective qualities. That means you can't run it into enemy defenses in a poorly planned frontal attack, but it's still useful. The A5 variant has a good gun, good stabilization, and good targeting electronics. It is useful in any role even if it's not the best tank out there.
