  • Natsume's Book of Friends is a currently ongoing shoujo manga that since its release has become a hit series in both Japan and America. Both the anime and manga have touched so many and one of the biggest reasons is how the story explores compassion.

    A video on my favorite shoujo series! Thank you! I watched the anime and haven't gotten to the manga yet though. This series is so soft and healing, it made me cry like a baby so many times. Aside from what you said, as a queer person I felt that Natsume's story really captured the queer experience of isolation, trauma, and then the huge sense of finally Belonging.
    I'd like to add regarding empathy that kind of goes hand in hand, having low empathy isn't a sign of someone being evil. Having low empathy is a brain makeup it doesn't mean they're actively trying to harm others or they will in future. Internet and pop psych's views on empathy is quite harmful and that sort of belief adds to the demonization of neurodivergent people.

    • @00moon
      @00moon Před 2 lety +4

      @@Serocco Having high or average levels of empathy doesn't make someone automatically benevolent.
      Neurotypical folk are equally, if not more so, capable of causing suffering, on a mass scale even, and they do. Have been doing as long as humans have existed. You're just used to it. And you're simply proving my point about pop psych and internet's overall lack of understanding/ willingness to even perceive in the first place. Ironic that you can't muster the empathy or compassion to unlearn your own prejudice against neurodivergent people. That includes sociopathic people, actually.
      Time spent less on concern trolling and more on taking steps forward to be a decent person would be time better spent Imho. Maybe you could learn a little about the ripple effect of compassion *and* of just general unpleasantness, from this video itself. Maybe you'll start to see people as just people, not fictional characters or the exceptional Other or inferior beings for not having the same brain makeup as you, maybe then *you'll* cause less suffering yourself Idk. Ciao!

    I genuinely think reading shoujo and josei manga helped me to become more empathetic, especially towards women, because I enjoyed reading them specifically in the context of understanding that they were for women & trying to understand why each series would appeal to its female readers. I’m very thankful for that, it’s improved my life a lot.

    I'm surprised I haven't found this video until now! Its really well explored
    Natsume Yuujinchou has been one of the most pivotal pieces of media I've ever consumed, I first found it when I was 13, and over 11 years later it's remained my comfort. I've collected all of the relased manga, as much merchandise and figurines are actually available in my country, created numerous paintings and cosplays, and even have Natsume Yuujinchou tattoos haha. Yet its so underrated in the west, I've tried convicing people to watch it and its never happened, although sometimes I love that its my own special interest. Although of course the supernatural aspect of the series isn't as relatable, the story has always resonated with me so well trying to battle loneliness and difficulties socializing whilst also showing love to the important things and people in my life! And watching Natusme's growth it somewhat reflects mine and makes me want to cherish it as much as he does...
    I think I'll be heartbroken whenever the series finishes, but with the nature of the show I never tire of rewatching/re-reading it, so I absolutely know it'll always be my favourite and most important media

    Natsume is one of my favourite characters in anime, I can seriously relate to him as a foster child myself. I may not have powers but I was an outsider and because of my differences (autism) I was abused by my foster carers after my dad died, it wasn't until I got an amazing social worker that I was finally removed from that hell I'd lived for a year and was placed into an older couple's care who were absolutely amazing for me even if I had become extremely mentally unstable. Those foster parents are now who I refer to as my grandparents and I would never give them up for the world.
    It's nice to me seeing a character that's been through trauma and pain along with foster care (which is technically what he's in if they can just toss him around) and yet we see him learn to thrive. 💜

    • @Monica_bondevik
      @Monica_bondevik Před 2 lety +3

      @@ColleensMangaRecs it's very rare tbh especially when the character is so kind like Natsume, most foster care characters aren't exactly the nicest and treat others especially their foster parents poorly which makes you feel ashamed of the fact that you were in that situation even if you had no control over your situation.
      Honestly why I was so excited for this video, finally someone talking about an anime that I connected so heavily with even if I'm not a guy or have powers to see yoki. Honestly at my lowest and loneliest I'd start imagining my favourite anime and video game characters to have someone to talk to because I was so isolated.

It isn't just episodic where you never see a character again, characters do come back and it's great. Natsume learns to open up more and tsundere Nyanko is just so wholesome. I love it.

    Wonderful discussion! Seeing Natsume gently get resocialised over the course of the story feels healing in an inner child sorta way. Isolation habits are hard to notice and even harder to kick. The literal connection to his grandma was touching too. Love this series (although more familiar with the anime & I still haven't watched the most recent season). Way back when I was first seriously starting to get back into anime (around the start of college), I was a huge fan of a similarly-paced/emotional "conflict of the week" type of series called MushiShi, and Natsume often came up on lists when looking for something similar. Just a super touching series whether it's dealing with a seemingly simple "spirit of the week" tale, or more focused on Natsume himself and his growing relationships and interactions with others (often both intertwined). I also particularly love the 2nd ED sequence "Aishiteru." Again, deceptively simple but brings up emotions in me I wouldn't expect at first glance.
    Also completely nuts that CR decided to go back and dub this show considering its age - that's some serious investment.

Natsume somehow is a unique character in all my anime watching in that his strength comes from his relationships that he doesn't initially even realize he's growing. His selfless impact on others surprises even himself as the youkai end up choosing to be with him after he gives without asking anything in return and giving them freedom, which is the exact opposite of what his grandmother did. Natsume is not just healing his own trauma but also healing the youkai's trauma by trying to heal some of the past. I'm surprised it's shoujo cos I had that misconception that shoujo is mostly about romance and relationships. Discovered the anime last year and it's been a fav for me and my sis. Very wholesome and at the same time grounded.

    I haven't read this series yet, and while this video basically felt like a summary, I remain skeptically interested. It sounds soooo heavy. Like a companion to Goodnight Punpun. It sounds overwhelming emotional, I'm not sure if I can handle it right now. Does the series inject levity into this heavy story, or are you supposed to just cry after each book?

    • @ColleensMangaRecs
      @ColleensMangaRecs  Před 2 lety +3

      It's much lighter than I made it out to be. The two stories I picked out to talk about served to move Natsume's backstory forward which is why they are so heavy. A lot of chapters are very much cry worthy but none of them make you feel too sad afterwards because it's about people healing. It's much more feel good.

    Amazing! We should do a zoom meeting to watch anime o read some shoujo manga in groups so I don't cry alone hahah xS

    Every time I read book 8, I think that if he had gone with the yokai, it would have been the equivalent of leaving your abusive family for an abusive spouse... The yokai feeds on suffering, after all.

      I think if u thought the anime was boring then u probably won’t like the manga either. They are pretty similar, and so I think you might be even more bored in manga form (since it doesn’t have the pretty ost or great voice acting). I don’t think it’s boring at all considering it’s my favorite piece of media ever but I understand that it’s slower pace and episodic nature isn’t for everyone.
