  • Welcome to the Next Project!
    2 "quick" projects on the bench.
    A Starr Guitar and a PRS SE, both in for tune-up/set-up work.
    Just when you expect things to go smoothly, there is always something that tries to trip you up. Doesn't matter if it's a decade old or fresh off the boat. Always something going sideways, typical.
    Hope you enjoy the projects, and remember, don't take anything you see here too seriously, I'm just having fun. Hope you are too.
    Be safe and take care!

    Congratulations on 9K!!! Well deserved ole buddy. As for the video? This is probably one of your best. Showing all that you do for everyone to see. Most don’t understand exactly what goes into a setup, just what the high price is. Not knowing the expertise and knowledge, much less the expensive tools you need. Kudos … hi Laura ❤️

      Hey Mike, good to hear from you and thanks for watchin!
      Thanks for giving your POV on the video and process. It's good for me to hear that kind of feedback. I felt bad on these projects, as I had quoted one amount, not knowing what I'd actually get into. I contacted the owner during the project and he was really cool about all of it. He wanted it done right, and told me "whatever you think it needs". I left the door open for the Starr to come back another day due to the stuck neck/lacquer issue.
      I must have done okay as he dropped off another guitar for me to go over, and it needs a lot of attention.
      I'll let Laura know you say hi.
      Hope you are doing well, be safe and take care!

    I enjoy your videos! Good to see your work and learn from your successes and mistakes. My newest mistake will learn a tip from this video for next time. 😝
    As I’ve said in other comment sections, I’m restoring my ‘96 MIM Strat I had painted “Daphne Blue” back in 2000. I stripped it and redid the Dakota Red it originally was and refretted the neck. I did the body in beautiful nitro from Oxford Supplies and polished the body up to a nice shine and was redrilling the strap peg holes when I dribbled the super glue on the front of the body between the bridge and lower end of the body. Sad trombones played for me in stereo with that blunder. I then sanded it off and used a razor blade to gently scrape the glue off, and took a 1/8 chip along with it. I now am learning the fine art of drop filling and following Dan from StewMac’s steps.
    Oh the fun art of guitar restoration!

      Hey Tim, thanks for watching!
      So sorry to hear of the mishap. Rest assured that you are not alone, I've been there, done that, probably more often than is acceptable.
      There is honor in picking oneself up after a good beating. I raise a glass to you sir!
      Seriously now, accidents, mishaps and just being human gives us a lot of practice in repair and recovery.
      I think I'm a bit of a junky for this kind of thing. Not that I want it to happen, but I know it will, and I really like "saving the day", even when I'm often the cause of the catastrophe. Hmm, I think that's a red flag of sorts, yikes!
      Wishing you the best in your new skill set of spot repair.
      I'm sure the guitar is great, congratulations on the mod!
      Be safe and take care my friend!

    Hello John,
    I'm sure that by sanding the saddles, you took away the magic of that guitar.
    I hope you and your loved ones are doing well!
    Best regards,
    Jens

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Jens, good to hear from you!
      LOL, hope I didn't remove the magic, that would be bad!
      I wonder how, or if, anyone ever set the intonation on this thing in the past.
      I originally gave the saddle adjustment screw a few turns and it pushed out of the bridge. I realized at that point, it was actually an acoustic guitar saddle...pretending to be an adjustable electric bridge with individual saddles. It easily fooled me.
      Seriously now, I was surprised by how tight it all fit together, and how it going nowhere without a lot of help.
      We are all doing well here, day-to-day life stuff. Nothing serious to deal with, luckily.
      Hope all is well for you and yours too. Oh, how did your son's gig go?
      Be safe and take care,
      John D.

      Intonation? That is totally overrated. At least it doesn't make any difference when I play.😂
      My son: well, at least his performance didn't lead to him being kicked out of the band! No rotten food was thrown at him either.
      At least nothing hit him. And the Epiphone had no neck break.
      His next gig is on Friday. This time the event is public, and we can watch. I need to remember to get some rotten food.

    I don't have a Starr, but you've definitely wandered into my domain: Cheap Strat-likes! I've been picking them up on Craigslist and Goodwill to bring back from the grave as a way of working on my setup skills and tinkering with wiring ideas. Eventually I'll get into fret leveling, but for now it's just smoothing the ends when necessary, and inevitably some will be sacrificed to the God of Refrets simply for the experience!
    Given similarities I've run across, many use the same stock parts, and some may have even come from the same factory. I guess that's just how those OEM custom labels work -- If you have enough capital for a minimum model run, they'll take your specs and headstock shape and decal and make your "own" guitar brand.
    So this Starr certainly fits the bill! If you're willing to overlook the logo and pick up every guitar you find, a surprising number will make you say "This neck feels pretty good!", and then it's off to the races with mods. I spotted the Seymour Duncans and locking tuners and knew this was a modder after my own heart! After all, I did first wander into your channel looking for info on the Starcaster Strat-like I'd picked up -- that was a great (Next) project!

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Mark, thanks for watching!
      This was my introduction to "Starr" guitars, I've looked them up and only found very limited into. Possibly a company that did offer full builds at one time, or maybe finished parts, I really don't know. Their website makes me thing they only offer painted parts and not full builds at this time, but I could be wrong.
      At any rate, it was an interesting project to work on, and it definitely has some good quality parts.
      I to have a few Goodwill projects ready for attention. That Starcaster was from Goodwill, and has moved on to a good home since completion. I now have a Squire strat and an Ibanez Gio from GW. Those will be future projects, with the $50 Ibanez Gio getting an Evertune upgrade, LOL. The upgrade is 6x the value of the guitar, I need some form of therapy.
      Not sure what will happen to the Squire strat, so many possibilities.
      Oh, I have a fret file review coming up soon, which may offer some ideas for your future progression into fretwork. It's hard to call a "winner" from the files I'll be presenting, but hopefully everyone will get a little insight into what will work for them.
      Thanks agian for watching and the great comment too.
      Take care!

    Curious…did you have to drop down the bridge 6 screws to lower the bridge for better action?
    Do these screws have the indents in them for the trem edge to sit and pivot on?

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 6 dny +1

      kmatax, thanks for watching!
      To be honest, I don't recall if I lowered the 6 screws, or just the saddles.
      The saddles were way high... I looked back at the video and noticed a few of the screws were "uneven", so I probably did adjust them and the saddles. Yes, it appears the screws do have a fine groove just below the head.
      Looking back, I'm a bit surprised that the bridge is finished pretty nice, yet the saddles look like bad pot metal. Hmm. Interesting.
      Take care my friend!

    Hey John, have you ever hear of the Fret Maestro?
    Seems to be a cool tool that makes levelling of the frets much easier.
    And I like what I've seen underneath the pick guard of this Starr guitar. Was that stock, or was there work done before? A quality switch and a big pot, nice.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Achim, good to hear from you and thanks for watching!
      I haven't tried the Fret Maestro, but I have looked into it a bit.
      Seems very intriguing, and I can see some great opportunities for such a tool.
      One potential issue I would currently have, is the various radius boards I've been working on. I'd need the full set of FM radius tools, not in my budget - yet.
      Along that note, I am days away of posting a diamond fret file down-and-dirty comparison review video.
      I've go 2 different StewMac files, the MusicNomad S-File, Fret Guru Diamond Dagger 2, Baroque Gen4, and a Contour file from Bitterroot Guitars.
      I'm reflecting my experiences with a side-by-side hands-on quick test... Stay tuned for that.
      The Fret Maestro would have been an interesting addition to the line-up, just don't have one to test.
