There are many aspects of Aladino's 'Swiss perfectionism' that others can learn from, but the one that I think is arguably most useful, and most often-overlooked, is his practice of cleaning-as-he-goes: If you create dust, vacuum it up immediately. Keep a brush in your jigsaw case, etc. It is MUCH easier, much better for your health, and leads to better finished work, than to let the dust settle onto (and into) everything, and 'plan' to deal with it at some unspecified 'later'...

Hey, KIds...I am a 72 year old retired architect. I have battled for many many years a compelling need to do, at least, one thing perfectly. This effort has been a failure. Perfectionism is a particularly corrosive form of "self hate". I recognize myself when I sometimes see Aladino work...however, I also recognize how much closer he comes than I ever did. Finishing those deck beams seems like a milestone and they look PERFECT to me. Congratulations on the fine work!!

@@charonstyxferryman I'm not concerned with Yaba's level of finish. What concerns me there is it's lack of structural integrity. Splicing together almost every single main frame just does not fill me with confidence. Neither does the half assed way they just redid the roof with zero beams actually going under and in line with the roof beams. Instead again relying on bolts to hold it rather than physical support.

Your comment on perfectionism is well taken. If I don't move this project along I will not live to see it's completion. Yet, for many of us, it's the journey of the building as much as the finished product.

The satisfaction of watching good craftsmen working cannot be overrated. Being an academic who likes to tinker with physical objects like building or repairing engines I really do learn a lot watching these videos, including Leo’s, and in my opinion Aladino, Leo and Pete would make a perfect team of craftsmen. Only problem being that they probably never would finish their work, because there will always be a little detail that can be done better or made more efficient. :-)

One thing I figured out early on was to never point out the detects. No one else will see them if I don't, and it will be where they look first if I do point them out. The challenge of course is to learn to live with them myself.

The 'story' telling is compelling. Sailing Yacht Florence have just told an incredible story of crossing the Indian Ocean and will now move on to a story about the Seychelles. Your story at the moment (incredibly insightful, interesting and well told) is about the refit, and will then move on to a story about the sailing of the refit. The variety is what makes and keeps it interesting, just focussing on one part without a perspective on the whole would diminish the overall 'story'. And don't apologise for the perfectionism, please don't.

  • @bobbiejay2085

Soothing perfectionism - gentle and appropriate with each to his own. Aladino is embracing allowances that is both comfortable and practical in the long run. Imagine the joy MCII will bring to you both knowing how you got there. A powerful combination.

Loved the opening shot, Aladino was actually "beaming" and with good cause, the last of the short beams. When I think over the work done to find, uncover, source the new wood, figure out and perfect the curve, the angles, the pre fitting and coating and then the installation I realize how much skill, patience and determination you have both put into just this one renovation let alone the time taken to figure out the plan of how fit them all so as to have confidence in the end product. Great going guys. It was a joy to watch.

Yet another successful week of tasks completed. While it had to be challenging to get to, you were able to get the area prepped and the thickened epoxy applied to the structure so that the new beams would become a more integral part of the structure unlike the ones you removed that seemed like they were just thrown in to get then hole filled. You both do a great job at explaining things which helps non-sailors, like me for instance, better understand what you do and why. Having spent a couple decades in construction, one thing I learned was that having a small second drill with a driver bit installed saves a lot of time from switching from drill bit to driver bit. I have a small 12V Makita that I only use for that purpose and only use it to drive screws.

I enjoyed watching your sailing vlogs, because Sailing is something I would love to do. But I cannot sail, because I suffer from severe motion sickness. And when a boat rocks, I start throwing up. I enjoy watching your super boat repair skills. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. 💖

Never be afraid of ‘old school’ work. When you’re in blue water getting pounded, your mind will be more at ease, knowing how sound the refit was.

We might not be doing a similar project as this, but what we take from the viewing is the attention to detail and to be true to the process to attain the proper results. For me it will be the job of rebuilding the engine bed of our Pearson 35. It it very functional now, but not up to my high standards, that I have, in part, learned from you two. Keep up the good work.

And another most enjoyable episode of your restoration. It may only be fitting deck beams and epoxy, but you are both so good at documenting the process ,I look forward to next weeks episode as soon as I watch the current one. As always Take Care.

Some of us are actually watching for the technique, example, and motivational inspiration because they directly affect our own boat refits. I am restoring a refitting a 50 year old trawler that I also cruise during the refit.

well done kiddies ! ... EDITED TO ADD : the fact of the matter for ya'll who DON'T know, is that IF you do NOT do these things correctly, they will fail when you least want them to AT SEA, and can KILL YOU !! ... repairs to a sailboat are DEADLY SERIOUS, and it's VERY refreshing to see Aladino take the care that they do deserve.....and one more thing....when this boat launches, it's is, without ANY doubt WHATSOEVER going to be as solid as the Rock of Gibralter.....remember to have a little fun whenever ya get a chance guys.......OnWard....

I can so feel with you when it comes to perfectionism. Don’t touch with your fingers, don’t move so much, dust will fly, don’t breathe in it. My dad was a watchmaker…… Also in the process off refitting a sailboat, feeling the urge to make things perfect and for eternity. Then it’s good to put things in perspective once in a while. There will probably be a new refit after 10 years anyway…. Nothing is forever.

"Boat Yoga" Haha! I think yoga was developed for people who don't have boats. 😃
You are doing a fine job with balancing perfectionisim with practicality. Fine boat building while still making forward progress. I would agree with your decision not to scarf in a piece of plywood that's purpose is to act as a spacer between the structural deck beams - no comprimise there. Save the effort for the visible hardwood slab that will be the centre of attention. The story telling style is compelling too - I watch your weekly video while taking a break from my own boat projects. Keeps me motivated. Thank you!!!
