  • Fixing the idle issue! In this video I've finally fixed the issue which was causing my ST to have a sticky idle!
We tried a few things before this (cleaning the throttle body & changing the air intake hoses) but the issue was actually to do with a split in the PCV hose behind the intake manifold.
This video is what I did to actually fix this issue, and can be used as a guide along side Craigs video of how to take off the inlet manifold, big thanks to Craig for the inlet guide:
    • How to: Remove intake ...
Hope this helps anyone with similar issues!
Thanks to everyone that helped by suggesting that this was the issue! you where all right and I owe you all a pint!
All music used in the video is my old bands demos

Your video was very useful, I had exactly the same issue with my ‘56 ST. Replaced the tube and valve today and now it runs perfectly. The tube was split the same as yours, which I was very pleased to see once I’d stripped it down. The bolt positions you hilited was very useful an I agree that number 1 was the most awkward to get the socket on to. I used a telescopic magnet for removing the hard to get to bolts and also for putting them back - an Essential piece of kit.
Thanks for your video, it was most helpful.

Great video and thank you, I had the exact same problem and changed out the hose this weekend (March 2022) following your detailed tutorial (I'd never have found the mainfold bolt through the triangle window :)). Intrestingly when I first gained sight of the hose it did appear to be split along the length of the hose, however once I'd managed to remove the inlet manifold with hose intact the outer hose had split and the inner had lost its rigidity and collapsed so I guess when using the car the vacuum would seal this hose and unseal depending on engine air demand essentially sending the ECU crackers! When I first started the car back up for a couple of minutes it really struggled to not stall itself however once warmed up and a quick 10 minute drive around the village the engine was purring. As a note I changed the valve too (simply because getting in this assembly like Jay says isn't a 20 minute job), the clip holding the valve did test my patience :)) however the origional valve was clear. Thanks you again.

    Hey Jay,
After some years and my PVC has gone, lucky enough trying to think why it's was wrong back in the day and it was this silly hose. If we knew people state side have had this problems from 2008.
Thus I don't know how you drove it like that for a year, it feels so wrong. But then again I drove for yrs with no thermostat and never had much heat in the winter. As I thought k&n was making. Me not reach temp.

Great video, only thing I can add is renew your inlet manifold gaskets, these are four green rubber gaskets on manifold, if you don't know age of thermostat, whip that out and pop a new one in, it's on the left under manifold and awkward to access with manifold in situ, that water hose running under manifold goes straight to it, also, while you have throttle body off and you haven't cleaned it lately, give that a clean with brake cleaner as well👍

Vincent Ando the PCV hose actually holds the inlet on, so it needs to be removed to pull the inlet out. I ended up cutting mine as it was so awkward to try to remove.
The fuel rail sits in the way too so I loosened that as well. It certainly took some pulling/weird positioning to get it out once everything was removed

Hey mate I can't quite understand your comment!
It had idle issues in natural when stationary or in gear, if thats what you was asking!

When i start mine from cold, i tap the accelerator and the revs go up but then dip down below where it started and almost stalls. Cleaned TB. Any other ideas? Only happens on cold startup. Thanks

A lot of people have this problem with a dodgy idle when cold. Have you checked the PCV for any splits? I know these cars aren't the best from a cold start, some people have mentioned about a ECU update which can also fix/help idling issues. That was what I was going to look into next but mine was a split hose so I just changed that :)

@@jaymono6498 Thanks Jay, is it possible to see the condition or take a picture of the PCV hose without having to remove the inlet etc? Looks like a ball ache!

@@TapDancingOnYoFace I'm not too sure, I've heard people trying a paper test for a blocked PCV valve
(Remove the cap from the oil filler hole on the valve cover and place a stiff piece of paper over the opening. If your PCV valve is working properly, the paper should be sucked against the hole within seconds)
But I'm unsure if this will work with a split hose! You might be able to see a little bit of the hose but the split might not be on the side you're looking at.

You could look into the T map sensor in the front of the inlet manifold sort of below the throttle body, two wires going in and a torx bolt holding it in remove it and gently clean up any oil & carbon off it using a spray like you probably used on the throttle body Craig DIY tells you all about it it's a thermistor and sends a signal to the ecu for air density/ temperature changes, although I think this sort of age Fiesta 2.0 duratec it's a common problem, I fitted a ST150 inlet manifold on to my focus 2.0 duratec straight swap and fitted the same roose motorsport hose & new PCV valve as a precaution & to remove the swirl flaps, of course there's a little more room to work under the bonnet on a focus

@@jaymono6498 For anyone interested. I took my inlet off last night, and my PCV hose was totally fucked, split all the way up and wide open. I replaced the valve with a new one, blanked off the inlet and fitter an airtech oil cooler/catch can kit. All my issues are fixed.
      Thanks!

Cheers! Though I still cant understand why Brits use imperial for speed/distance!?!? Metric for life!!!
I'm yet to figure out the MPG:KML conversion but am I right saying that 17-18mpg is high let alone 23mpg+?
Obviously we're not aiming for best economy for eg...
Here but in Australia I just filled up (Paid $2 p/L, Highest p/L amount I've paid usually sits around 1.70 p/L) and the full tank estimates a range of 460km but it'll probably end up around 420kms on empty.
Essentially I get about 10:10 (Kms:L) unless I use the freeway a lot.
Or Im completely wrong?... Its probably the latter :)
Anywho, Enjoy driving your ST150 in proper cold weather!, they weren't built for the Australian summer thats for sure!

However I have sprayed stuff before - its all about the prep work, make sure whatever your spraying is properly sanded down / primed for painting, and have a steady hand!
I'm sure theres loads of guides on youtube though, I am planning to spray a few plastic bits, but that will probably be early next year!
