- Life At Sea In The Merchant Marine Aboard A Cargo Ship
Ever wondered what food is like on a cargo ship for crew members?
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and snacks are all provided free of charge to crew members aboard Maersk Cargo Ships. Bonded stores are available for purchase at the "Slop Chest" which is opened weekly when the ship is in International Waters and therefore tax-free. Special thanks to the steward department aboard this ship for their outstanding effort putting out quality meals for everyone!

Thank you so much Bryan Boyle. For showing people what we do for the crew at sea. This is ChiefCook Andrea Hargrove. I can’t believe our video is on CZcams. You are awesome 🤗
Hey Andrea! Everyone has been leaving such nice comments about you and your great personality and laughter. Thanks again for letting me record in the galley. I appreciate the hard work you put in to preparing our meals. Hope you are enjoying your vacation :)
Chief Hargrove, I am a retired Navy Officer and have seen great, good and bad food served over the years. I somehow thought that merchant food would be more cafeteria like, but your galley seems like you are cooking in my home (if I could afford a professional chef). The personal touch is amazing. Keep up the great work Chef
@@jameshead7899 thank you so much for the kind words. I just love ❤️ what I do.
The food looks good. I find these videos about container ships and life aboard them pretty interesting.
Pleasure to interact with you Andrea! Your smile and the love you put into food/work really enlightens my soul that you and your staff are bringing such happiness to your crew which is really important in boosting Morale. I kinda wished we had your energy, charisma, and skills a cook back on land ^_^
The lady serving food looks so sweet to cook and takes a lot of pride in her food.
She was excellent and always had such a positive attitude! I’m going back to this same ship soon and hope that steward department is still working there
She looks so cook ? You want to cook her ?
It's always a pleasure to be around someone who takes pride and enjoys their work
Thats due to watch schedules. The next watch is called 20 minutes after the hour to give you 30 minutes to get to watch and be 10 minutes early.
@@BryanBoyle drools😂😂😂😂
The lady prepping food, how can you not love her? A positive demeanor goes a long way.
I only heard her laugh once and my heart was filled joy.
What's with the masks? How many people could be onboard?
@@NikonKanava ikr ! I could tell she’s like the auntie of the ship😂
I would eat ANYTHING she made! Love her energy
I retired with 31 years in the American Merchant Mariner fleet. The food that is served is better than what most Americans eat at home, but as sailors we have to complain about something so food it is. In all reality the food is very good. Compliments to the stewards department.
When the food on the cargo ships are better than the average hotel
why didn't you show the morgue freezer where they put the elderly who die during a cruise?
@@woah.one89 isn’t exactly a cruise, that was a cargo ship. Maybe still some form of a morgue?
@@LasseHG1 sorry i feel a little off today having issues with attention to detail (cargo)ship lol..but yeah im sure they have something in the case of a death
@@woah.one89 A ship like this would not have a designated Geezer-Freezer but they will put them in one of the refer rooms.
When I was in The Navy we had some guy's dad die on a Tiger Cruise and we put him in the reefer until we got back to port.
The food is also better than many restaurants, but similar to my kitchen.
The quality of the food being prepared and served in this clip looks pretty darn good.
Because they all knew they were being filmed for a CZcams video, the Captain made them hide the everyday slop that is served! In fact, the yummy food shown was not eaten and it was quickly replaced with the usual daily slop once the filming stopped. Trust me for I know of what I speak all you little grasshoppers out there!
@@exnbcnco I dont know if you are being sarcastic or not I guess you are but I am a seasam i work on those ships the food is really good
It's not the easiest life, so feeding the crew well (even with the cost of having dedicated cooks) is one of the cheapest ways to ensure they work well. And also just a nice thing to do.
Yes, the food and presentation seemed good.
My question is - which week was this, week 2 or week 25 ?
@@stevekillgore9272 You know the food isn't stored in pickle barrels anymore, right?
Been going to sea for 42 years 38 working in the galley been chief 👨🍳 since 96 ❤️ my job and the life @ 🌊🌊🌊
In 1972 my uncle visited us in Baton Rouge, Louisiana when his ship, the 600' "Penn Champion" was moored there briefly. He was radio officer, and he invited my brother, father, and me aboard which included lunch in the officer's mess. That food was every bit as good as what was shown here. My uncle's main lament, he said, is that he couldn't fit into his Navy uniforms any more. He was a "retired" Master Chief Radioman, but still in the reserves. He eventually went back active duty, and retired for real after 46 years active duty.
My husband worked on the deep sea trawlers out of Fleetwood (near Blackpool, Lancashire,UK) they used to fish off south east Iceland before Iceland got their 200 mile exclusion zone back in the 1970’s. He always tells me that the food on board was the best thing about the job, the cook on board had limited space but cooked up a roast dinner everyday with homemade Plum Duff and ice cream for afters, breakfast was full English and as much as you could eat also homemade bread everyday, also if you didn’t want the roast dinner you could pick up a fish off the deck and ask the cook (politely of course) to fillet it and cook that for you instead, he says it was the best fish he’s ever eaten...... also the cook would make a homemade fish stew instead of a roast as an alternative as least once a week.the fishing industry is all gone now in Fleetwood but I think that the ice house still remains making ice for supermarkets etc, but that’s about it.he says they were happy times on board with the shipmates banter etc.
Thanks for sharing. Also, the first time in my life I've seen somebody else refer to dessert as "afters". Warms my heart.
Honestly if I had a bunch of people cooped up on a ship for who knows how many months at a time, really good food does a lot to keep tempers from boiling over at some point. Even the navy found that more than anything else food is one of the major determinants of high or low morale.
Bless these people for keeping the supply chain going in these Covid times.
Many were stuck aboard and unable to leave the vessel because of Covid.
@@Hello-ye2bi Yes, the crews travel from port to port loading and unloading cargo but are not allowed leave their ship. Some of these crews have been at sea for almost a year now without a break. We all owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
Don't promote that BS
Think I’ll take my wife on a “Maersk” cruise.
if you want to cross oceans this is the cheapest option! would take longer but...
wonder if you get bored would they let you work for free doing something?
@@jugaloking69dope58 it would be hard cause you need tickets to work on them
Think you’ll be single soon after, unless your wife wants toast , sausages and fruit on the same plate
@@jugaloking69dope58 Yeah mop the decks or some good ole chipping
@@fman02 that's how they serve french toast at every restaurant I've ever been to
I’ve hitched a few rides on several container ships (the 80s and 90s) and the grub was always top-notch👍
Always wanted to take a ride overseas on a the old tramp steamer. It would be nice if you make a video on how, how much to hitch a ride.
The food looks great! Bravo to the good folks that prepare it, the crew on this ship is very fortunate! Wishing you calm seas.
I love your comment!
Great video, my mother is a second cook a cargo ship and has been for 10 years. She's sail the great lakes and is usually with 5-6 hours of home but it's still an interesting time when she's gone for months. Seeing this brings fond memories of visiting her onboard and eating a meal. The crew on ship eats well and it's clear on your vessel, same as on my mother's ship, that your cook takes great pride. That food looks delicious.
I’ve always wanted to try sailing on the Great Lakes. Glad to hear your mom serves quality meals to her shipmates!
One morning I was riding my bicycle across the Golden Gate Bridge and suddenly smelled bacon and eggs cooking. It smelled so good! I stopped and looked over the rail of the bridge. There was a Matson cargo ship head out for Hawaii just below me. I envied those sailors! On their way to Hawaii and having a great breakfast.
They call that the pineapple run!
Wow,food looks awesome, amd I’m sure the folks in the galley are definitely the people you always want to treat well and keep happy
Food was great on this ship! Good food definitely plays a major part in crew Morale
I worked on a ranch in Montana. I didn't care if everyone on the ranch was pissed at me as long as the cook (the boss's wife) was happy with me, that woman could COOK!
My father was in the navy during WW2 and volunteered for the USN Armed Guard on liberty ships and tankers said the merchant marines took care of them and feed them like kings and now I know why he volunteered for that assignment. He always said the Merchant Marines deserved more respect than they got. This video made me hungry.
For breakfast this morning I had two Pop Tarts, coffee & a cigarette.
I skipped the pop tarts as bad for my health......
Sounds like the start of a country song.
0:58 You know mama is cookin' with love. She seems so happy to feed the crew!
Thank you so much. I’m the mama that cooks on this ship. Yes I love what I do and the crew is wonderful.
@@andreahargrove2084 I bet you never work a day in your life. You can tell you enjoy doing what you do! Safe sailing!
Great! No inane commentary and no f - wit putting his face in the camera sounding like Bill and Ted.
Haha thank you
Agreed!
My deep respect to the kitchen crew. Must be a huge undertaking with I think just 3 people? Also the head chef lady, just put a lot of love in the food. Make everyone feels the real meaning of home cooking.
Those offerings look really nice and delicious, and good vibes from the kitchen staff too.
I loved the cooks smile. Looks like it would make for a good trip with crew like that
I've read many accounts of working in isolated situations. Mining camps, logging camps, rail crews, ranch hands, etc. One theme I always found was that workers could withstand many hardships but if the grub was bad they would walk out in a heartbeat.
The chief cook can make or break the meals. When I worked for Union Oil, we had a cook that seemed to have a special sauce that went on everything. It all tasted the same and was awful. He was only on board for one month. He was replaced by another guy that totally transformed the food. Maersk has a reputation of having good food. Great video.
You are absolutely correct. Some cooks and stewards do the bare minimum and just heat up frozen dinners. Most seem to take pride in their work though and really enjoy making the crew happy with their cooking!
Wow! I work in a college dining hall and we do a lot of volume and I know how hard it is to turn out good food on a budget on a schedule. Much less on a ship! It looks great! Thanks guys!
I’m so fascinated with ship life! This is one of the most real videos I’ve seen yet. You can’t help to love the precious service with a smile. *subscribing*
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for subscribing :)
These ship’s s food is depending on their Shipmanagement company. I work on ships and this is not the norm
Yeah, I can imagine.
What do you mean ?? Less vegetables for some ? More industrial food for else ?
The only interest for me is having Chefs from many many parts of the world and tasting food from countries like India, China, Africa, Eastern, Middle East, Arabia.... I love food !!!
Steward served in Officers' mess in 70s.
@@waikintang8246 stewards still serve in the officers messroom still to this day. I've sailed with many companies and only with maersk you will see the captain and superior officers getting their own food. I was actually amazed.
It also gets influenced by the nationality of the crew, e,g, if the crew is all Indian...
you get Indian food.
Dude….I am writing this in 2024, so not sure what you might be doing now, but I have to say the videos are superb, but more Importantly to me, is you. You display a work ethic, commitment and professionalism that is outstanding. You display exactly the type of tole model guys need to model today.
Thanks to you all for keeping our world moving, you people do a wonderful job,the food looks great, making me hungry just watching, always wanted to do a passenger trip on a merchant ship,on my bucket list when covid19 is over
Everything looks great! Very interesting video. I never gave it much thought before your post. I'm glad you made it.
Hi Bryan
Great video it took me back to my time aboard in the Merchant Navy back in the 70’s, we worked hard but eat really well - stay safe regards
Kevin
Glad it brought back some good memories for you! The steward department went above and beyond on this ship
Blue skies and smooth seas for y’all. Safe travels 👍
I was really impressed with the food available, with the manner in which it is served, and the people doing the cooking and serving. The woman making the grilled sandwiches (Chief Cook? Andrea Hargrove?) has my admiration for her attitude and efforts!!! That looks like such a homey environment there! Very different than the many videos I have seen! And you get Breyers ice cream! Not some kind of knockoff brand! Thanks for showing this and the menu!
Love your content!!! I am fascinated by huge cargo ships!!!
God bless those doing the work with the heart of a servant and the spirit of service. They are true heroes.
You know that chef is making everything with love.
Short and to the point, love it thank you!
Good job Brian, no bs, right to the point and interesting 👍
Food looks very decent. Thanks for doing this video.
Food looks excellent and it's making me hungry.
Never forget. Maersk was where I learnt. Thanks a lot Maersk.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Food on this ship looks better than any cruise I’ve taken. Your food looks awesome!
Thanks for posting this. Makes a point how you're a small community that just happens to be gliding across deep ocean.
Excellent video and awesome food presentation! A thirty year Navy Supply Corps officer wishing you "Fair Winds!"
Safe travels and calm seas. Food looks good.
Wow looks great. Cooks are about the most important personnel. Gotta keep the crew happy
great video! Concise and to the point.
Glad to see you guys are eating well!
It's not easy coming up with new creative meals, especially at sea .. very nice, wish I was dining there. Cheers ...
Wow, good looking food aboard a Maersk!
I traveled twice by Freighters and both trips were good experiences. Would I do it again?? Certainly. Courteous well trained staff and the seamen were all congenial too.
Gone are the days of freighter companies in the US carrying passengers. Glad you were able to experience it when you did
@@BryanBoyle I worked for Moore McCormack and Lykes back in the day and we carried passengers. Only 12, more than 12 a Doctor was required, If I remember correctly. Retired MM&P.
Reminds me a lot of logging camps back in the day. Good cooking makes or breaks so much.
My father served on USS Power in early 60's
Said food was fantastic
Miss the times when I would sail on my dad's ship as a supernumerary!
Wow you were so lucky....
I've always wanted to take a couple of journeys as supernumerary but never made it.
Would still love to do it if I ever get chance.
@@philyew3617 no doubt I was very, very lucky to sail as a supernumerary. Very few get such an opportunity and I'm most thankful to have gotten it. Thank you 🙏
The music was very pleasing too!
😁👍
nothing says good food like a cook that shows compassion like this lady does
Thanks for sharing this!
Awesome !! Keep the fire burning..😁⚓️
This is much more normal than I expected
I imagine the food is very fresh. Cooked exactly as wanted. And respect to the kitchen folks for a very clean and organized galley.
I’d pull up a chair real quick and eat.
I Love watching videos on what/how people eat in various jobs around the globe. Recently, I watched a video on how people eat in Antarctica and that was fascinating as well! Thx to the CZcams Algorithm, I get to watch your video! Thank again, abit late but Thanks :D
Thanks for checking my channel out. I just posted a new video about our Thanksgiving meal aboard a ship in Alaska that I think you will enjoy!
I'm the opposite of a picky eater. I loved living in the dorms at university. Everyone else complained about the food at some point, but I was in heaven. I love food and I love when other people do the cooking. I work from home now, but I think working at a big company with a good cafeteria back in the day would have been super.
Food is surprising good onboard of the ship. It's decent and adequate. Very nice !
love the enterprising spirit at the end! haha, after-hours trader.
Delicious & healthy food..! So, yummmy.... :-D
Warm greeting from Indonesia, Bon Voyage,Sir..!!
Food was great on there! Greetings from USA
This is meant as a compliment, I had no idea or interest in what type of food is served on these ships. UNTIL I watched this video. It is fascinating, love it.
I went to sea in 1978 as a deck cadet, the food was excellent and silver service .
Some good looking chow.. reminds me of when I flew offshore oil support in the Gulf of Mexico.. Those oil riggers ate well..
I worked on a team boarding cargo ships and giving the crews COVID vaccines. We set up clinics either in the crew dining room, hospital (which was a bit cramped), or the office. It was pretty fun to go on these ships and meet crews from all over the world. I especially liked Indian and Filipino crews who had great hospitality and often invited us to stay for lunch and tour the ship.
Unnecessary vaccines. You are a scam artist spreading fear.
Quite a bit different from when I used to sail on cargo ships in the 1980s. Polish Ocean Lines. Or polskie linie oceaniczne (PLO). My dad was an electrician, and would take me with my mom for 3-4 months at a time onboard I was just 6-7-8 yrs old but remember well! The cooks were my favourite and their huge walk in fridge was awesome!
Very nice. Thank you.
Looks better than I had as a Coastie on board cutters. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! Thank you for your service
I was an agent for many cargo ships at the ports of Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach and Brunswick. We would handle all of the ships requirements from pilots, tugs, berth, Customs, Immigration, USDA, fresh water, doctor/dentist, crew changes, spare parts - basically we were there to see to all of their needs. I got a call from the security at the port of Brunswick informing me that one of the crew had threatened to blow up the ship. I called the Coast Guard and they told me they did not have anyone to send so I got a Brunswick police officer and we boarded the ship only to find out that the guy was homesick and drunk which is not uncommon. The hours were long and many times there just wasn't enough time to eat a decent meal so I would get permission from the Capt. to have lunch or dinner or sometimes just a quick snack. I ate on many foreign flagged vessels along with U.S. flagged vessels. Sometimes I could tell that the ships chandler sold them inferior foods. I especially remember some shrimp that was offered to me that looked more like bait shrimp.
The quality of the food looks dang good. I like the french toast and sausages at 0:48.
Food looks amazing!
Having a great cook is a delight on a happy ship.
Watching this made me hungry! Everything looked so good! A+++!!! :-)
Thumbs UP! This is the kind of video that answers questions that cause people to say, "Why didn't I think to ask such a question?" I will add one suggestion: you NEED MORE ICE CREAM IN YOUR FREEZER.
One of the pleasures of working offshore, EXCEPT on some rigs offshore the PRC, and West Africa.
Thanks for sharing your video
This is so much better than on my ship...jealous!
Kali liaht stor kokinya bersih dan rapi. Jadi ingat waktu sy jadi koki dulu..🇮🇩 INDONESIA
Salad bar quite interesting . Various vegetables 👍🏻
Looks amazing! It’s the simple things…
The Slop Chest is like Craft Services on a movie set !!
Reminds me of the food aboard the SS Seatrain, an old container ship I sailed on in 1968.
My preconception was something like “Mutiny on the Bounty”. Reality is closer to “The Love Boat”! Very nice.🤗
Food looks much better than I was expecting
Looks like mighty good chow on that ship. People working aboard those ships need good food. Not just for nutrition, but to help keep up worker morale from being away from home for long periods. Almost looks like they're all like family themselves.
Food looks great!
Okay, so, why didn't I know about these jobs on these ships when I was young enough to be able to work on one!? That all looks soooo good.... :)
That's better than the 'sack breakfast' I got staying in a Residence Inn!
Yum. Thanks
Been there, done there cooking for the Merchant Marine. Yeah, the food is good.
NICE sound track !
Strawberries , toast and sausages. A wonderful combination :O)
